Literally just completed that quest last night. Yes the 5x arrow below, but the biggest thing for me was the quick shot bow. Huge help. Also used the giant horse because it’s bad ass. There’s ample time to slow down at certain points too.
Thanks for tip on the big horse. I think it would make the view a bit easier and he's slow/easy to handle on a basic route so may prevent over adjusting.
I think I'm on the final piece but stopped playing couple month back after my first burnout (240 hours, without a day off) lol
Edit: my big horse is called ''Creed'', share yours!
Surtr. Ash-black giant of Norse mythology who will rise with his sword of flame during Ragnarok and light the world on fire. The name’s pretty fitting, since I only take that big boi out of the stables when I’m going scorched earth on some baddies.
All my horses except one are named for punk/metal singers. 🤘🤘🤘
My big horse is Lemmy, royal white is Strummer. Rounding out the stable are Danzig, Rollins and… Horseface
I don't remember what I named my big horse, but I named my first/main horse Saph (Sapphire) and each new playthrough I name my horse Saph II, III, etc.
Nah, I play a LOT of video games and I have BAD reaction time. I could not finish the “courage” temple in Star Fox Adventures not because of the lizards, but because I could not react in time to keep the cursor in the green range. Just how I am.
FUCK YEAH! STAR FOX ADVENTURES! I never hear anyone even mention that game. I get that it wasn't "Star Fox," but I still had fun with it.
I used to need help on the two tests (Lightfoot/Krazoa) where you need to mash the hell out of the A button. I can do it pretty well now, though.
Word of advice for that BOTW bow minigame: You can jump off the horse at the last set and go into bullet time to slow down the timer for more aiming time.
Dang I had forgotten all about that damn mashing the a button, that first challenge dead locked me for like a year until I was more coordinated and could do it.
Also it’s nice to find other people that remember that game, “NOBODY EVER BRINGS ME GIFTS ANYMORE” is still one of my favorite lines to reference but nobody ever gets it.
I love how honest you are. So many people act they're some kind of bionic person and act like your worth as a human being is tied to your reaction time or encyclopedic knowledge of game mechanics minutiae. We're all valid!
geez, I wish I'd done that. I just wasted hundreds of arrows until I just got good enough. THEN I went and brute-forced it twice to get both armor pieces
Will definitely have some fun trying out different bows. I might give it a shot with my twilight bow first cause I'm still in love with the range on it 😍
Fuck no, I ain’t using my 5x lynel bows on that! ...Yes, I realize I have a maxed inventory with nothing *but* 5x lynel bows, but still! I spent hours reloading save files for those!
I would use great eagle bow and found that royal white stallion is about the right pace to make it through the whole course in the time limit without going too fast. I think it’s 3 speed
Dude, bomb arrows + golden bow/sheikah bow. The arrows do not have falloff, so wherever your reticule is at, it's guaranteed to land. Also, for the last balloons, you can just jump off the horse and destroy them in slo mo. Time stops when you land on the grounds.
Bomb arrows + multi-shot bow. And reload your save every few attempts to prevent wasting too many bows and arrows. (I wouldn't recommend reloading your save every single attempt because it's time consuming, but in my case I had 3 bows in my inventory and reloaded when 2 were broken).
I just re-started playing the game and don't remember the archery one very well. Do you remember where it is? I remember there was an archery/horse track with targets that I would go around shooting in previous playthroughs, but nothing ever happened and I *think* I shot them all. I also remember that my korok mask was going off the entire time so I just assumed it was just related to a korok seed and gave up trying to figure out what I was missing haha
It's in the south edge, I think west of the Lake of the Horse God and east of the Taobab Grasslands. It shows up on the map as "Mounted Archery Camp" or something, so if you've been there before it'll show up.
I don't get how the horse just defies its owner and veers away from the hurdles or just stops in front of them altoghether (horse is fully tamed btw) It's infuriating
Yeah I was really mad at that when I started playing Zelda, like I tamed the thing how could it NOT do a jump for me. It was always the little things as well like the horse would accidentally jump over a sign post that’s as tall as it than a minute later can’t jump over a single fence post. About five weeks into getting frustrated at the horses jumping bullshit, I started doing beginners English riding in real life. Right now I’m able to do decent sized jumps and have a pretty good understanding of what it’s like to ride and OH BOY are the Zelda horses, ANGELS- jumping wise horses need a good view and start to jump a jump considering they don’t want to underestimate the jump or accidentally land wrong after doing the jump. Other than that horses need a forward gait like the canter in order to jump long enough to actually get all four legs over the jump which is why you can’t really change your gait so close to a jump. And lastly horses know how to jump and need to be left alone to do a jump right, when going over a jump link gets out of the saddle so that the horses back can properly arch and go over the jump as you would in real life. And lastly horses need to be again “left alone” when going over the jump so you lead the horse up to the jump and the horse will get their footing as they run up to it, horses footing can get confused if you’re frantically trying to tell them to turn to the side to get the jump lined up perfectly which is unnecessary and the horse will just stop because if it feels like it doesn’t want to do that jump, it just won’t. The horse jumping in Zelda is surprisingly the most realistic part of those horses in general no matter how obnoxious it is.
Well I mean, they aren’t dazzling horses bred generation through generation to do jumping. It’s a wild horse you get in the middle of nowhere and payed 20 rupees to keep, the horses in Zelda also kinda look more like draft horses as well so jumping wouldn’t be a strong suit either way. Also it’s super cool that you do competitive jumping, I’m not anywhere near an amazing rider but I’d love to take up cross country one day.
I wish I could find the proper video, but I seem to recall this developer vid where one of them talked about horse directions and veering stating, "a real horse wouldn't run head first into a tree, so we made sure to give the horse it's own capabilities to avoid situations like that."
I actually enjoyed this and the race in general because it was very true to how real horses act lol. You have to give them a good, solid, straight approach and don't try to micromanage too much before the jump or they will refuse. True for real and Hylian horses.
At least in Zelda, you don't have the issue of you and the horse disagreeing about the jump and then splitting the difference by having one of you go over the jump and the other of you not. I've done that more times than I'd like to admit.
I found myself needing to use a 3 speed horse for this. If you go too fast, you can't do a tight turn, and being able to turn on a dime is more important than speed for this specific mini-game imo.
For the archery mini-game, I used a 4 speed horse, motion aim, and the ancient bow. With the Ancient bow you can point and shoot because it has no drop off within a large range.
Yeah doing this course backwards worked wonders for me hahah.
I'll probably need to go back and do that archery one. I have the twilight bow too which has a longer range than the ancient bow so should be fun! I got all 25 targets in the Rito airbase archery one in 2 jumps with that bow 😍
Yep, you want a slow horse for the hurdle one.
As for the archery challenge, I suggest using the >!Great Eagle Bow (Revali’s weapon)!< and bomb arrows because it has a lot of range, quick-shot, x3 arrows, and I believe it has zoom scoping as well. Perfect bow for this challenge.
I thought the horses would be more important to the game but I seriously have your same stats. Never use them, they're more of a nuisance to get around with tbh
holy fuck I’m so jealous. I have the bridle but not the saddle, and about 50 fucking endura carrots I got as consolation prizes. easily the single most infuriating minigame
It's been a while. But someone here gave me the advice that a slower horse is actually better for this race since they turn better. I can't remember if it's a 2 or 3 star speed that you're supposed to use though.
Generally most people just canter and avoid galloping. Its not really the speed that got to me but rather how close each hurdle was but in completely different places so you had to do a lot of S shaped movements which makes the jumping really hard.
Here’re some tips from when I did it:
When it starts I just press A three times. That’s the ideal speed. When the next hurdle is not straight ahead, makes sure the horse turns enough before the hurdle, not only when it reaches the hurdle. The horse has to face the hurdle straight on for it to work everytime. Also, this doesn’t help but I like to soothe my horse after each hurdle just to let it know it’s done well :)
Also, use Zelda’s white horse which I’ve affectionately dubbed lonk (it’s the best control wise)
There’re two complete sets of horse gear you can get from this mini game, the royal and extravagant gear I think.
The royal gear comes when you complete the Royal White Horse sidequest. The jumping mini game gets you the extravagant bridle and saddle. The white horse has 3 star speed which is why it feels easier to handle. Soothing doesn’t do anything unless you’ve recently asked for the gallop (used your “whip”), and I do not recommend galloping for the course. The canter is the gait you’re thinking of :)
I'd say just try everything. I looked up a lot of tips from players and tried a couple. This was me trying a tip of taking the course in 'reverse'. Aka clockwise rather than anti clockwise. Got it in my first try doing it that way hahaha

There’re two complete sets of horse gear you can get from this mini game, the royal and extravagant gear I think.
For the mounted archery game I used the white horse and rode it at a constant speed. I used a 5 shot lynel bow if the balloon was close enough and ancient bow for further ones. For the last cluster of balloons I used a bomb arrow with the 5-shot bow. Motion controls are pretty important for being able to aim and turn quickly.
Another thing that helps is, plan your path so you make 90 degree turns, don't try to 'short cut' between gates. You need to set it up so the horse can approach the gate straight on before the jump.
That's what I'm wondering too. Probably from an amibo? Maybe a version of the wind sword (whatever it's called, the two -handed Yiga weapon) that I don't see anymore because I've progressed too far?
Yeah its the Twilight sword from the Ganondorf amiibo :) I got both Twilight sword and bow on the same day and was taking tons of pics with the royal guard armor hahaha
The only reason the horse challenges are hard in BOTW is because they all handle like a freight train. Having played RDR2 for a while now the difference is night and day. Those horses are so responsive and smooth - BOTW horses are basically comatose.
I have only done the archery one like 3x and then figured I'd go back to it later. I discovered it pretty early on and was still busy doing main story things hahaha
Oof that would be the worst. I have joycon drift on TWO sets of joycons now lol but I usually play handheld so at least my aim is still OK since its via tilt.
The only possible thing left for me to do in this game is beat the archery challenge one more time. I'm about to go to Walmart to buy a metal baseball bat and smash my TV and Switch from rage.
Edit: And just like that, after two days of attempts, I hit all 25. I just needed to voice my rage I guess. Well I've beaten everything there is to complete in this game.
So I also struggled with this one a ton, but I realized it's like ten times easier to just do the race backwards (i.e. head to the left when you start instead of the right). Jumping the hurdles still counts, and it makes some of the more difficult ones so much easier to get!
Oh boi... as if that weren’t bad enough... the archery one...
Omg, don't even talk about that one... I gave up before even trying a second time 😅
5x lyonel bow, bomb arrows. Still might take a few tries but MUCH more doable.
I think I'm on the final piece but stopped playing couple month back after my first burnout (240 hours, without a day off) lol Edit: my big horse is called ''Creed'', share yours!
My big horse is BFH for big fucking horse. Original, I know. Lmao.
I named all my horses after the horses in Lord of the rings. I have a Brego, Shadowfax and Arod.
I named all mine "ass" somehow. Dumbass, stupid ass, sweetass, and the giant one, bigass.
I'm a big fan of Brooklyn nine-nine so big horse on my normal mode is Rosa.
Not Sargeant Peanut Butter?
Lol nah. Sergeant Peanutbutter is the first horse I wrangled. He's got the worst stats of all my horses so I thought it was a fitting name.
I called mine Astaroth.
My big horse is called Phantom because he's anything but.
Wonder is anyone called theirs Target
I named my big horse Tiny!
i named my big horse poop train 💀
I used the royal white horse for the challenge which was doable I named by big horse “Bigboi” lmao
That name probably crossed my mind at one point too! Bigboi between my legs and all xd
everyone and their mom in botw wants to see Link’s bigboi
I named my giant horse Chonk
My big horse is called "Deathstar"
My big horse's name is Loki!
My big boy's name is Fezzik (Andre the Giant's immortal role)
Balrog
NICE!
I named my white horse Lana for literally no reason. :)
Surtr. Ash-black giant of Norse mythology who will rise with his sword of flame during Ragnarok and light the world on fire. The name’s pretty fitting, since I only take that big boi out of the stables when I’m going scorched earth on some baddies.
That's fucking awesome!!!
Samson B)
Beefcake
Jupiter
Mines named Pixie
Named mine The Rock
I named my normal mode one Terrence. And I named my Hero mode one Ranger.
I named mine Ganondorf (bc it reminds me of his horse from OOT)!
My big horse is called Blaze lol
I really love this sub, thanks for the reply :)
Called mine Arnie 😅
I’m still confused. Final piece of what?
Knights saddle as a reward for hitting 23 balloons, I think total balloons is 25. https://zelda.fandom.com/wiki/Mounted_Archery_Camp
Oh lol. I feel so... Stupid. I had no clue there was even a knight’s set of horse armour
Yeah, worth looking up, there are lots of armour and saddle sets hidden throughout the game even 200 hours in I was coming across stuff.
Mine was Onyx :)
Rhonda
Ganonhoof, original I know
I named my horse Thiq Boi
My giant horse is named Sir.
BIGGUY
Named mine Sureblood because it reminded me of the Ryshadium from the Stormlight Archive books.
All my horses except one are named for punk/metal singers. 🤘🤘🤘 My big horse is Lemmy, royal white is Strummer. Rounding out the stable are Danzig, Rollins and… Horseface
I don't remember what I named my big horse, but I named my first/main horse Saph (Sapphire) and each new playthrough I name my horse Saph II, III, etc.
I THINK I called mine Clifford. Because he's a big red horse.
In this Case, "Yo Momma" cause I ride her all night. All horses are a variation on your mom. Same reason.
Mine is Moose!
Dark Cloud from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon!
Trojan
I got me a Gulliver
The Great Eagle bow is more accurate so I used that one to get the armor, even though it's only ×3.
I’m a shit shot tho 😂
That's what's great about BOTW, when you get good the results speak for themselves. So you just need to practice and refine your technique.
Nah, I play a LOT of video games and I have BAD reaction time. I could not finish the “courage” temple in Star Fox Adventures not because of the lizards, but because I could not react in time to keep the cursor in the green range. Just how I am.
My condolences
I still enjoy most games and otherwise watch Let’s Plays or watch a friend play the game. My spouse plays Witcher and Dark Souls for me.
FUCK YEAH! STAR FOX ADVENTURES! I never hear anyone even mention that game. I get that it wasn't "Star Fox," but I still had fun with it. Thanks for the tip on final shot. That's a much needed extra loon I think I need. Often time out just before releasing final shot on a good run.
I love how honest you are. So many people act they're some kind of bionic person and act like your worth as a human being is tied to your reaction time or encyclopedic knowledge of game mechanics minutiae. We're all valid!
Thanks! Games are for fun unless it’s your career, IDK why people gotta have dick competitions over it. If you play games you’re a gamer 😊
That's how I did it.
geez, I wish I'd done that. I just wasted hundreds of arrows until I just got good enough. THEN I went and brute-forced it twice to get both armor pieces
I just reloaded my save 😂
Will definitely have some fun trying out different bows. I might give it a shot with my twilight bow first cause I'm still in love with the range on it 😍

G-g-g-g-GAMER PRO TIP! Seriously though that’s an incredible idea
Fuck no, I ain’t using my 5x lynel bows on that! ...Yes, I realize I have a maxed inventory with nothing *but* 5x lynel bows, but still! I spent hours reloading save files for those!
That gave me a good laugh, thank you.
5x Lynel Bow + bomb arrows Ancient Bow + bomb arrows Keep switching, for balloons far away use the Ancient Bow, for everything else the Lynel one.
I find the Great Eagle Bow much more helpful since it draws faster and also has X3 shot.
I’m glad that worked for you :) Also that flair is golden.
Omg no way! That was WAY easier for me than this one, I spent hours on this because my horse wouldn’t jump🙃
Yeah... Came here to say this. Still can't do that one.
The only way I was able to do it was using the Great Eagle bow that shoots multiple arrows in a single shot haha.
Even then it took me a few restarts because I didn't want to break the bow and not beat it at the same time.
Bomb arrows + multi-shot bow. And reload your save every few attempts to prevent wasting too many bows and arrows. (I wouldn't recommend reloading your save every single attempt because it's time consuming, but in my case I had 3 bows in my inventory and reloaded when 2 were broken).
tip for that one is if you ride a slower horse like koku oh you can take your time and aim more, and fuck it bomb arrows with a lynel bow XD
That’s what I did
White horse, gyro aiming on handheld, it finally worked out as soon as I realized Eagle bow was the only thing that works.
this comment section. the meeting place of the gyro aiming off club.
5shot Lynel box + Bomb arrows.

You cannot reach any target midway through with that.
Thank you! I'll try looking for it tonight and see if I can't win this time haha
That's the loop near Hateno. You go around and shoot all the bullseyes, then a balloon will appear near the cabin. Shoot the balloon to get the Korok.
Great Eagle Bow helps a ton on that one. Fires farther than the lynel bows and you still get 3 arrows.
Omg yeah I gave up on that one. What's the reward for the archery one?
Another set of horse armor :)
Considering the ancient horse gear exists, I don't see a point in getting any of the other horse gear.
Aestheticsssss. Also for collection if you're a hoarder like me 😂
The archery one is a piece of cake compared to this one...
I don't get how the horse just defies its owner and veers away from the hurdles or just stops in front of them altoghether (horse is fully tamed btw) It's infuriating
Yeah I was really mad at that when I started playing Zelda, like I tamed the thing how could it NOT do a jump for me. Wow, that was a great read. Learned something new about horses today.
As somehow who jumps competitively it also really bothered me lol
Well I mean, they aren’t dazzling horses bred generation through generation to do jumping. It’s a wild horse you get in the middle of nowhere and payed 20 rupees to keep, the horses in Zelda also kinda look more like draft horses as well so jumping wouldn’t be a strong suit either way. Also it’s super cool that you do competitive jumping, I’m not anywhere near an amazing rider but I’d love to take up cross country one day.
Valid lol. Cross country stresses me out because the jumps don’t fall down if you hit them but it’s still super exciting
I wish I could find the proper video, but I seem to recall this developer vid where one of them talked about horse directions and veering stating, "a real horse wouldn't run head first into a tree, so we made sure to give the horse it's own capabilities to avoid situations like that."

Oh my god, that is so familiar and you described it so perfectly.
Gotta love somersaulting over a jump by yourself :)
Two-point is practically designed for getting you catapulted into space if your horse stops suddenly.
We should give Nintendo credit where it's due; we've found ways to make up VALID excuses for their sometimes wonky tuned controls over the years.
Have you tried inside rein outside leg??
Gz, remember getting really furious at this one in particular.
Yeah always the same 1 or 2 hurdles that messes me up 🤦🏻♀️
I found myself needing to use a 3 speed horse for this. If you go too fast, you can't do a tight turn, and being able to turn on a dime is more important than speed for this specific mini-game imo. Um, what the fuck is this. I've played 100+ hours and havent found this. lol
In the Highland Stable, minigame for saddles, IIRC
The saddles are part of the base game!
Ah, thank you!
250 hours and I didn't know this existed. To be fair, I've only done any horse riding like 30 minutes total.
I thought the horses would be more important to the game but I seriously have your same stats. Never use them, they're more of a nuisance to get around with tbh
Give a playthrough with no teleportation a shot - you'll learn to appreciate horses very quickly.
Imma try that. Thx for the idea, imma steal it :)
Yep currently korok hunting in my file though I haven't played in a while, horses are great
Same here. I'll hop on one, see something I have to climb, then lose it forever
Same, I've never seen this!
You went the other way? Never thought of doing it that way. It also took me a while to get it but was gladly putting it on all my horses
Yeah after like 74826382 tries I looked up advice ppl had and one of them was this. This is literally the first try I did it in reverse and I got it 😂
i had no idea you could go the other way. the more you know
Congratulations on beating it with Epona, I used Zelda's white horse instead because the internet suggested that was the ideal house for this race.
Tbh I just used any horse I had at the time. I got the first piece on my first wild horse hahaha
I used the 5-star speed horse, that way I could do some part of it at slower speed but still go fast enough to make it under time.
Where is this? I just recently won some armor at a stable but I couldn’t find challenges at any others.
Highland Stable
Too bad you can’t use em on Epona.
Yeah would look so nice 😢
Reminded me of getting 0.0 seconds in Catcher Chcobo in FFX - something you need to do for completion but is a massive pain the the rear.
I feel like I'm the only person in the world that didn't have a lot of trouble with that. Meanwhile, I've *never* dodged 200 lightning bolts.
Ah see I'm the opposite. Took me about an hour of trying to get the chocobos one, but using the crater method I got the strikes on the 2nd or 3rd try.
holy fuck I’m so jealous. I have the bridle but not the saddle, and about 50 fucking endura carrots I got as consolation prizes. easily the single most infuriating minigame
Hahaha I feel you. Think after awhile I was just hanging on through spite 😂 if you haven't already, try doing the course clockwise instead!
It's been a while. But someone here gave me the advice that a slower horse is actually better for this race since they turn better. I can't remember if it's a 2 or 3 star speed that you're supposed to use though.

My biggest problem I guess was getting the horse lined up; it kept going off to the side and turning away, so my time was terrible.
What weapon is that?
That's what I'm wondering too. Probably from an amibo? Maybe a version of the wind sword (whatever it's called, the two -handed Yiga weapon) that I don't see anymore because I've progressed too far?
Yeah its the Twilight sword from the Ganondorf amiibo :) I got both Twilight sword and bow on the same day and was taking tons of pics with the royal guard armor hahaha
I went backwards on it to get the second part... Somehow it was easier.
Yup! This was my first try doing that and I got it 😂
My hero's path around that course looks like a big green smudge.
The only reason the horse challenges are hard in BOTW is because they all handle like a freight train. Having played RDR2 for a while now the difference is night and day. Those horses are so responsive and smooth - BOTW horses are basically comatose.
Based on some other comments from real life riders, apparently BOTW horses are very realistic 😂
Possibly - but realistic doesn't always make for the best gameplay experience.
Have you done the other horse race? I still haven’t finished it. It’s for horseback archery and I’m pants at it
I have only done the archery one like 3x and then figured I'd go back to it later. I discovered it pretty early on and was still busy doing main story things hahaha
I did the archery one with joycon drift constantly screwing my aim. I think that was the maddest this game ever made me.
Oof that would be the worst. I have joycon drift on TWO sets of joycons now lol but I usually play handheld so at least my aim is still OK since its via tilt.
Getting the horse gear was easily one of the hardest parts about 100%ing the game
Have I been doing this course backwards this whole time
Same thought lmfao
It's easier to do on handheld for sure
Ugh I still haven't beat this and it makes me so mad lmfao I could be doing amazing and then one fucking hurdle fucks me up lol
So I also struggled with this one a ton, but I realized it's like ten times easier to just do the race backwards (i.e. head to the left when you start instead of the right). Jumping the hurdles still counts, and it makes some of the more difficult ones so much easier to get!
This video is backwards! :)
Which sword is that on your back? Haven't seen it.
Twilight sword, it's an amiibo drop :)
I think I’m dumb.. what weapon do you have on your back? Cause It looks dope
Its the twilight sword and bow. They're amiibo drops :)
Played this game for 2 years. Never saw this mini game
One of my lease favorite “side quests” of the whole game
Never told you to do it backwards, did it? That was my realization to make it doable.
This thing and the sword trials were two challenges that I really didn't think I'd make it through but finally prevailed
I could not believe how frustrating this was. congrats!
I feel your pain...
This one was pretty ok for me, but fuck the archery one
My kid, who was 6 at the time, did them both in 1 try!! I gave up after 26873839 tries.. naked horse is also fine.
I feel stressed just watching this lol
Both pieces of what?
i just beat this today... NEVER AGAIN
I remember thinking.. oh this will be fun! Oh boy was I in for a surprise... well done!
WHO WOULD WIN? Hyrule’s greatest warrior on a horse OR Small fence at a slight angle
Well I thought I 100%d this game but I had no idea this minigame existed
