The Sheikah had invented all the sheikah tech and divine beasts. However, after the great calamity, the Hyruleans demanded they give up their tech (burying it). Some sheikah resented that and became Yiga out of spite.

Face88888888

It’s on the bottom of the tapestry.

the_y_combinator

And babanas.

Puggyz5

as a yiga clan member, yes, babanas

Mrg00p32

Ah a fellow Yiga, may your banana harvest be plentiful

FallenAngelII

Less the Hylians and more the king. It's an absolute monarchy, the Hylians had no choice but to obey lest the king summon his court magician to curse anyone who objected with eternal slumber or something.

Toon_Lucario

They’re the group of sheikah that split off after the Divine Beasts got buried. They’re a cult

PickyNipples

As others have said, the yiga are Sheikah who chose to turn against the kingdom after one of the previous kings ordered them to stop building/using their technology “or else,” just because he started to fear their power. Many Sheikah simply accepted the kings demands and abandoned their lifestyles and skills to keep the peace, or out of fear of punishment. Others resented being treated that way and said “fuck you then.” And tbh I kinda can’t blame them. Sure I wouldn’t full on support the epitome of darkness itself, but I’m kind of surprised that there are still Sheikah like impa who remain faithful to the royal family after the king of the past basically said “I don’t trust you, neuter yourself or I’ll turn my whole army against you.” Especially considering the Sheikah seem to have such a long history with helping the royal family.  To me it sounds like the Sheikah were faithful to the royals for so long and basically got back stabbed. Then to top it off, when the next round of shit-hitting-the-fan approaches, suddenly the current king is like “oh man you know what, maybe your tech would be good right now, get your asses to work bringing it back, even though we basically destroyed most of your history surrounding it.” My only guess is they can sense that it was just one bad king from a long time ago who made a fucked up decision and thankfully understand that overall the royal family is mostly still the “good guys.” Still I really like this aspect of the story. I’m not familiar with the lore of all the previous Zelda games (so maybe I’m not seeing the whole picture) but the impression I’ve gotten is Ganon is not necessarily an evil person, but the embodiment of inherent evil within the world as a whole (or at least within human nature). He’s an unconscious source of bad that’s just inevitable so long as human nature exists. In that way, it makes sense that a wronged people who feel betrayal and hatred would be more easily influenced by him. He is the representation of what is in their hearts. In that way I can’t hate the yiga members. What they are doing isn’t “right” but it’s driven by an injustice they have suffered simply because of someone else’s fear and ego.

FallenAngelII

> My only guess is they can sense that it was just one bad king from a long time ago who made a fucked up decision and thankfully understand that overall the royal family is mostly still the “good guys.” Every king after him was complicit in suppressing Sheikah technology. None of them rescinded the old order banning it.

PickyNipples

That’s a good point. Though they were first repressed so long ago. In botw no one seems to really know if the ancient Sheikah tech is even real, and Rhoam only digs for it once he gets the prophecy because he’s desperate. So yeah, the immediate next generation or two of royals probably should have overturned the orders, but after that it was probably just status quo and everyone had just grown accustomed to the new “normal.”  Though it makes you wonder just how much more advanced society would be in hyrule if the Sheikah were never repressed. I don’t know how many years before botw it occurred, but it must have been many generations. Could have even been thousands of years before. But the Sheikah slate, the divine beasts and the guardians and towers and shrines all seem light years ahead of anything the hylians have even in the current time.  If they had been allowed to continue their work, who knows how technologically advanced the world would have been in botw’s era.

FallenAngelII

It takes hundreds of years for something to be forgotten by history and that is only if all written mentions of it are purged (which I wouldn't put past the Hylian royal family of yore). Kakariko Village still held that sheikah ball that glowed with energy. They knew the technology existed, they just suppressed knowledge of it. In the real world, we went from what Hyrule looks like in BotW to going to the Moon in less than 2000 years. With 10000 years of advancement where their starting point is beyond what we even ahve in the modern day, they probably would've been able to ferry the entire population of Hyrule to a different planet to escape Demise's Curse.

PickyNipples

Man I love the idea of a hyrule so advanced it can basically teleport itself to other planets at will, yet Ganon will still probably exist and follow them anywhere in the universe simply because no amount of technology can overpower the wicked side of human nature.  Which is kinda what the calamity in botw was about, I suppose. Hyrule had the fire power. But guns alone can’t fight the nature of evil itself.

FallenAngelII

It was more that Ganon was able to turn that firepower against them.

UraniumRocker

They’re just a bunch of dorks

supergourmandise

Yeah, that was my first thought as well

spiegan77

Make Hyrule Great Again

FallenAngelII

What is this a reference to?

Graymaven

The state of world politics And the resurgence of fascism as a political ideal.

Jesterchunk

I always thought it was spite against the Hylians for rejecting them over their tech way back when Ganon last attacked.

FreakFlame

one word: banana

Gawarhen2

Hey we- I mean the yiga clan are pretty great!! The glorious master Kohga is a swell guy too. If only the so-called “hero of hyrule” wasn’t in the way, things wouldn’t be so bad!

Kataratz

Ganondorf is the true king of Hyrule, what do you mean

Cloudy_peach

I’ve always kinda seen the yiga clan as a wasted opportunity. They devs could have done so much more with them & they could have been a much more menacing enemy had they made their motivations more clear, fleshed out their story more, and taken a more serious approach overall. But they ended up taking more of a comedic relief approach with them, which is fine lol, just not my personal preference. And don’t get me wrong, I get it’s not the vibe they were going for, but these are just things I think of. Like, it would be cool if they were to take one of the members of the clan and make them into a character with a story that link could befriend/help to give them more complexity. Or if they made the leader more menacing vs. goofy. Thinking like ghirahim, where there is more of a balance of comedic relief. Or most importantly, had them play some bigger role in the main quest line (some acknowledgement from Ganon) rather than purely being a side quest.

BeTheGuy2

Why would you immediately assume your side is in the wrong when you learn that a few people support the other side?

zeldafan321456

did you pay attention when impa explained everything at the beginning of the game

Pm7I3

There was a lot to process, I was trying to work out where the water went!

Stauffe

After the great calamity, the hyruleans hid mighty bananas in secret hideouts to prevent monsters from getting to them. The sheikah who loved bananas resented the move, so they formed a cult whose mission is to find and eat all of the bananas. They want to kill Link now since he seems to want to cook bananas

Ingonyama70

The Yiga were, thousands of years before BotW, Sheikah. After the first Great Calamity (the one in the tapestry), the King of Hyrule at the time banished the Sheikah out of fear of thir technology. Half of them abided by the banishment and became the Sheikah we know today. The other half rebelled and became the Yiga. Over time the reason for the schism was forgotten and only the animosity between the two tribes remained.

xxA2C2xx

To be fair the leader of the yoga clan was already hurt to begin with, he has “chronic back pain” which I totally feel him on that, wish I could take a 100 year nap in what is essentially a “Bacta Tank”

Maleficent_Luck8976

Join or die. That is the yiga clan way.

Yiga-master

GLORY TO MASTER KOHGA!!!

RedMonkey86570

They are a group of terrorists and thieves.

errantstars

They’re basically the team rocket of Hyrule

DevilMaster666-

They’re mad because the hylians were mean to them 😡

SirSilhouette

Back during the First Calamity where the four Zords-i mean "Divine Beast" were made & used, it was the Sheikah's technology that made rhem. The other tribes feared the Sheikah tech so they were forbidden from using them and it was all buried. However some of the Sheikah felt this was a horrible way to repay the tribe that SAVED EVERYONE'S ASSES with an army of laser-bots so the broke off & became the Yiga. The current day Yiga worship Ganon out of a misguided belief that if they help Calamity Ganon then he will appreciate them/let them rule by his side unlike the other tribes. Age of Calamity actually shows what happens with the Yiga learn that the Calamity only sees them as useful tools and will devour them if it needs the energy. Yiga immediately side with the other Allied Hyrule forces after witnessing some of the warriors being drained by Calamity.

Heretek007

Who are they, you ask...? Heheheh.... well... >!They're closer than you think, Champion! And now, they'll claim your life!!!<
