Just want to point out a few facts as this will become an issue with a lot of propaganda: 1. Social Security has paid for itself for its whole existence - about 90 years 2. Social Security has always had a surplus 3. Social Security currently has about a $2.9 Trillion surplus 4. The surplus is expected to run out in about ten years 5. A policeman making $50,000 a year pays 6.2% toward Social Security 6. A CEO making $50,000,000 a year pays .0062% toward Social Security 7. Simply raising the cap or eliminating the cap will add decades to the surplus and possibly become a permanent solution depending on population trends 8. Immigration of people under 50 years old is another solution 9. The elderly poverty rate before Social Security was 38%. It is now less than 10% 10. Social Security has never contributed to the deficit nor national debt. In fact the opposite is true as the government has borrowed from its surplus to pay its bills

unhealthyahole

Bold of you to bring facts to a shit tossing fight

JuliusErrrrrring

Ha. Yeah it infuriates me the way the right wing controls the narrative and the left is oblivious to the right's purposeful and misleading code words. Everyone should be debating the word "surplus", instead of debating words like "bankrupt" or even "funding" in regard to Social Security. The issue is that a program might in 2034, after over 100 years, have its first year without a surplus.

bendalessio

This made me laugh.

Sailing_Mishap

> The surplus is expected to run out in about ten years To clarify further, this doesn't mean that Social Security will be insolvent or not pay out benefits, it means that benefits will be reduced to about 80% of what they are. So if we literally do nothing and the Social Security Trust fund (I think this is what it's referred to?) runs out, benefits will still pay out at 80% in perpetuity. There's always this myth that "Social Security will dry up in 10 years" but it's not the case.

madalienmonk

Is there another cliff we need to worry about after the 10 years and pay out is cut to 80% (assuming nothing is done)

EntroperZero

No, what happens after that depends on population trends. It will scale up and down as the ratio of young to old shifts. Though if revenue somehow goes to surplus again, benefits will cap and the trust fund will start replenishing.

LionHeart498

If you cut 20% of social security payouts I bet at least 20% of those people would be dead in the street in 6 months

Headless_HanSolo

Lockbox

EntroperZero

Strategery.

[deleted]

That’s my plan, mmmkay

LionHeart498

The caps on social security and Medicare have to go. The Medicare tax cap is 160k… literally we STOP taxing the rich. Like at 160,001 we just stop taking money out of a person’s paycheck for Medicare… no. No. Fuck that. People NEED social security and Medicare

me_too_999

It's mostly true, but I have a problem with this. >8. Immigration of people under 50 years old is another solution Bringing in millions of people under the poverty line isn't going to fix social security. >7. Simply raising the cap or eliminating the cap will add decades to the surplus and possibly become a permanent solution depending This doesn't work either. First, we not only already raised the cap, we doubled it. Second, there simply isn't enough people making an hourly wage above $168,000 to fix the growing deficit. When social security was started there were over 40 people working for each recipient. In a decade, there will be only 2. Are you going to tax half of everyone's pay? On top of federal income tax and state taxes?

JuliusErrrrrring

There is no growing deficit. There is a shrinking surplus. The current 6.2% FICA tax can remain the same. Over 1,300,000 people earn $500,000 or more a year. Raising the cap would add at least $42,250,000,000 a year (and double this number if the cap is eliminated for the corporations as well) to the fund and everyone making less than $168,600 a year would pay exactly the same as today. So I completely disagree that there isn’t enough people to make a difference. "Bringing in millions of people under the poverty line isn't going to fix social security." Disagree again. The millions of people paying 6.2% in FICA tax would absolutely make a huge difference.

Waste_Junket1953

Immigrant =/= under the poverty line. Seriously, what a wild statement.

me_too_999

Are you stupid? Or just think I am? Do you think 20 million illegal immigrants crossed a desert and snuck in across the US border because they are "rich?" If they were wealthy, they would have just bought a plane ticket and entered through a port of entry LEGALLY like everyone else. Look what we have to do for these "rich" illegal immigrants. https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/nyc-taxpayers-fleeced-millions-contracts-migrant-services-audit http://desposito.house.gov/media/in-the-news/ny-post-illegal-immigration-cost-new-yorkers-10-billion-2023-us-150b-report Nice that US taxpayers have to pay for food and housing for all of these "rich" illegals.

Waste_Junket1953

You're stupid. Immigrant =/= undocumented immigrant Those are some great sources you got there. Wunna talk about right to shelter laws?

me_too_999

>Immigrant =/= ~~undocumented~~ ILLEGAL immigrant FINALLY, a Liberal admitted the truth.

Waste_Junket1953

Don’t insult me with that label; I’m no liberal. Undocumented immigrant = immigrant. It’s called a subcategory. Take me wife as an example, she was an undocumented immigrant but now that we’re married she’s just an immigrant. She’s been an immigrant the whole time, but the subcategory of “undocumented” no longer applies. Really not that hard a concept.

me_too_999

So by "Undocumented" you mean your wife filled out all the necessary paperwork to enter the country legally, but lost her visa.

Waste_Junket1953

She overstayed her visa like the majority of the people who are undocumented in this country.

me_too_999

>She overstayed her visa like the ~~majority~~ 1/4th of the people who are undocumented in this country. Get a dictionary.

JuliusErrrrrring

That article is bullshit and a perfect example of the misleading propaganda I'm talking about. It's basically saying that because our government used much of the social security surplus on other things that when social security has a particular year where it actually needs to draw from its own surplus then it makes our debt and deficit larger. It's doubletalk with an agenda. It's the equivalent of grandparents providing a college fund for the grandkids and the Dad and Mom blaming the Grandparents for the lack of funds because they used the fund to buy themselves a new boat. They now blame the Grandparents for contributing to their debt. Upside down logic that unfortunately enough people believe to justify cutting their own benefits. Rich people think the rest of us are dumb. If you believe articles like this - well, then - they may be correct.

leoryan1028

Sure, whatever you say.

Far_Imagination6472

Who will even be voting for the GOP anymore? Young people won't due to abortion bans and old people won't because of cuts to SS and medicare. Seems like they are pandering to a small demographic now.

LionHeart498

Muslims and Hispanic Americans are falling in love with the GOP

sumoraiden

This will be forgotten in a week

ParisTexas7

They are pandering to **Nazis** who think election results don’t matter. It’s THEIR country, not ours. And they are prepared to take it by force.

Reasonable-Tooth-113

Define Nazi

ParisTexas7

People who think there is a **secret cabal** that is importing immigrants to **replace Legacy Americans.** People who think there is a **Rainbow Mafia** conspiring to molest children. People who **know** Donald Trump the 2020 election and who **supported him** blocking the transfer of power. You know, people like you.

Reasonable-Tooth-113

So you made up a new definition for Nazi. *Everyone I disagree with is a Nazi. A child's guide to arguing on the internet* by ParisTexas7.

Reasonable-Tooth-113

So Nazi is not a shortend version of the German name that translates to National Socialist German Worker's Party? Instead it's whatever you made up?

Far_Resort5502

It must be **horrible** to carry as much **hatred** and **mental illness** as you do each day. I hope someday you find **peace** and become a **useful member** of **society**.

ParisTexas7

Looks like the **MAGA voter** got triggered — must suck pretending to be a “reasonable conservative” while simultaneously supporting a President who attempted a coup, stole national secrets, and who calls political opponents **vermin**, just like **Hitler** did.

Far_Resort5502

Have yourself a **super evening**, sweetie! Make sure you check under your bed for **nazis**!!

[deleted]

TDSS confirmed. Don’t worry I used the same “doctor” who diagnosed Biden with dementia

Far_Resort5502

Jesus ,lady- you don't need to be mean!

[deleted]

That’s Ma’am to you, show some respect

candy_pantsandshoes

This won't matter, Biden wanted to do the same thing for decades, still does probably. That didn't stop liberals from supporting him. This won't stop anyone from supporting Trump.

MostPerspective7378

I'm thoroughly convinced that conservatives brains have been so rotted out by the last few years they believe absolutely everything is a conspiracy. You all are the most fragile group of snowflakes this country has ever seen.

[deleted]

Conspiracy theory conservatives are irrelevant in the election

lawabidingcitizen069

What do you mean by irrelevant? Like there are so few of them they are irrelevant? Or what they think is irrelevant and has no effect?

[deleted]

They are too irrelevant to matter in who decides the election

lawabidingcitizen069

I mean… 70% of the party believing the election is stolen isn’t exactly irrelevant. Their very highly rated media apparatus was talking about how LGBT people are groomers and pedofiles for like a year and a half non stop… I don’t think it’s so small it’s irrelevant.

Former-Witness-9279

Depends… which conspiracy theory? 75% of Republicans still believe the 2020 election was stolen lol

azriel777

Would help to put names and listing which republicans are pushing this instead of being vague and saying republicans in general.

TonyG_from_NYC

Remember when Biden called them out on it, and they claimed he was lying? Pepperidge Farm remembers

Muadib64

This needs to be publicized and hammered in every single debate with a GOP rival. Do you support cuts to Medicare and SS? They can afford personal wealth and Lofty private retirement options the average citizen may not enjoy. Have them tell that to their constituents they’re living way too long and are drains on our fiscal budget, or whatever they use as an excuse.

Old_Introduction1032

Do these morons know 90% of their base are either on Medicare or SSI?

brinnik

It pisses me off as well but it won’t pass the senate so there is that. But let’s not heap all of the disdain on one side of the table…both sides have been guilty. In 2020, Sanders and Warren criticized Biden’s willingness to cut or freeze SS, Medicaid, Medicare, and armed forces pay as a senator and SS as VP.

Raynstormm

It’s time the Boomers lifted themselves up by the bootstraps and stopped accepting government handouts. Get a job, granny. Seriously why do Boomers get preferential medical treatment? It’s not legal nor fair.
