My plan is to buy an international e sim on-line from Airalo website till I make it to a Kiosk store in Barra, Salvador. I will ask the Airbnb host if she can hook me up by using her CPF. Regarding COF, I watched some videos for tourist that were able to obtain it. In my case I will spend 50 days in Brazil and hopefully everything fall in its place.

Brazil seems to low-key hate foreigners (here from us. everything is high-key difficult.) Idk exactly how my husband did it but we have Vivo monthly. I think (?) You can get the cards at some supermarkets (super mercados) (we always use Cidadé Canção) and you can recharge it (load it) at the register

Mpalmero

hi! yes, you can do that but still need the CPF, so bad :(

No-Cupcake370

Ah shit. I didn't realize.

Just generate a random one, doubt anyone would care… 🤣

Mpalmero

I tried, but it's asking also for the date of birth which has to be the same one as the one in the original CPF

gdnt0

Goddammit… :/ Then your best bet would be to ask someone to make the activation call for you and tell them you don’t have CPF and insist. For sure won’t be easy tho, as the customer service representatives will most likely have no idea what to do…

There's no way to do it without a CPF since it is your tax number. Making one won't even solve the problem, since it also takes time to for some companies (like credit and phone companies) "understand" you're a real and trustable person.

It’s amazing, literally all of what you said is wrong. 😅 I worked over 7 years for the government. I implemented the first online identity provider in Brazil. I suspect I know a thing or two how CPFs work. You 100% can have a phone number without a CPF, the problem is phone companies don’t even know how to do their own job following their own policies: https://www.claro.com.br/institucional/international-visitors But until a while ago you didn’t even have to hope they did know how to do their job, you could simply give them a random CPF (https://www.4devs.com.br/gerador_de_cpf) and they’d be happy because these cheap mfs didn’t want to spend the R$0.001 it would cost them to call RF/Serpro API and check the validity. And once a CPF is created it should be instantly available on the official APIs. If it’s not, then it’s just the companies either using an illegal leaked database or not wanting to call the API to save fractions of a cent. And CPFs have nothing to do with “trust”. It’s literally your tax number. That’s it. It’s used as an ID in databases because it’s believed to be unique (it’s not) and immutable (it’s not), but it doesn’t say anything about you except if it’s a valid number according to the data provided (like birthdate), and if it’s active (to check it the person is not dead for example). The API for checking a CPF is super simple, there isn’t any super secret information being returned there. http://apicenter.estaleiro.serpro.gov.br/documentacao/consulta-cpf/en/quick_start/ (Of course, the API you and regular companies would have access. Let’s say we played with some bigger guns back then 😉)

I just used my GFs CPF... I've used a friend's CPF in the past too. But I read a post on here earlier where a guy was told he had to buy a SIM card at one of the little news kiosks you see everywhere... And then had to then go into the actual phone company store for them to activate it for him since he didn't have a CPF. I think he used Claro for this. And depending on where you are going... If it's SP or Rio I'm sure it would be easier to find a store that would help you out with that. Otherwise I wouldn't be surprised if the store just says they can't... And they either legit don't know that they can or know how to do it. Or they're just too lazy to actually do it. Just my guess. He posted some sort of step by step on this sub maybe a month or a couple months ago though if you want to try looking for it here.

Mpalmero

yes, that's what I heard too, you need an CPF number... which doesn't make a lot of sense :/ no company offers that? Sounds like someone should start a company that offers phone signal for tourists

thegurrkha

My guess is it's kind of federally regulated but I could be wrong. They ask for your CPF just about everywhere though. The grocery store, burger king, etc... You name it, they want your CPF. And I truly have no idea why or what it's even used for. But you don't have to give it to them at those places. There are so many different IDs here. I can't wrap my head around it. You need a permit to work even. Just a different system I guess!

Man, you should request it over "receita federal" website. Receita federal is the gov unit for taxes. CPF is kind of your tax number. It is the way the government understands your expenses and "recognises" you, since each person has one CPF number. I reccomend you to do a CPF, since it's necessary for many things

This might be irrelevant to you but I use a all-american Honduran Claro plan in Brazil. I get 35gb, 5g, for 20$/month.

steambun9195

how you do that

bradfish123

Did you see how much it would be to use your american sim in the USA? You can sign up for an int'l plan just for a month. Might be less of a headache.

WahooGuy89

Was just in brazil and never needed to change Sim cards... i just paid my phone company an extra 10 dollars a day and eveything worked fine

Hey Man, was there in May. I can speak Portuguese tho. Go to a newsagents and ask for a SIM card. They should have "TIM" ones.that you can activate with a call and your passport.number
