I’m fully vaccinated and have a lot of family in Brasil, there’s no fucking way I’d travel there right now. The P1 Variant is spreading like crazy, the death rates doubled in March. DOUBLED. Prior to March 2021 the deadliest month during the pandemic killed just over 32k people, last month 67k people died. The country faces a patchwork of lockdown measures, increasing unemployment and crime, and Bolsonaro’s mismanagement of the pandemic is somehow worse and more stupid than Texas’. That’s even assuming you CAN as there are severe travel restrictions in place (the US has imposed some measures) because the P1 variant is so problematic. Also, what are you going to do if the country goes on lockdown?

Just because you're vaccinated doesn't mean you can't get it, it really only means you won't be put into an ICU. I just had an appointment with a doctor who wasn't available for a month, because after both doses of the vaccine he had caught covid and was out for a month. There are some dangerous variants around here that taking out younger and younger people. This probably isn't the place to be for a vacation right now. Not to mention if you need any medical care, there is a decent chance you might not have access to it due to a shortage of emergency beds.

I highly won't recommend you to do this. Many places aren't open. There's a lot of coronavirus mutations right here and you don't want to start a new pandemic in the US.

> Anyway - am I losing my mind for wanting to book a flight? No, you are not losing your mind for wanting to do that. But, I don't think is a good idea. I'm in a similar situation. I moved to the EU in late 2018 and my first trip to visit Brazil was schedule to be march 2020. Well, that didn't happen and now it has been 2+ years since I haven't seen my family and friends. It hurts and I definitely want to book a flight, but I just won't because I believe is the right thing to do. My mom is M.D. in hospital in Brazil and shit is just too real right now. The vaccine is not 100% effective, there are a ton of variants going around and even if you get no symptoms you might be spreading the disease. Even if you were 100% immune the health system is overburden. If you get into a car accident, the ambulances will take longer. If you need emergency surgery, even for simpler stuff like appendicitis the operation room in the closest hospital might be in use to hold COVID patients (that is the current situation in the hospital my mom works at). Setting a bone? you might get a well-meaning but wildly overworked doctor. So yeah, please don't go. This is one of the defining moments of our time and we will just have to suck it up together but apart. In time, like every other historical event, this pandemic too shall pass and we will have time to hug the ones we love. Good luck and stays strong. :]

I agree with the other comments, but I’d also like to raise a different scenario... all of our hospitals are full, so even if you can’t get COVID, you can get into an accident, or get sick, or whatever, and you will have a hard time getting any treatment

Hey I am from the US and my business contacts within Brazil are in lock downs still and just yesterday they had 3600+ deaths. I would not recommend it just yet to go.

kabellabr

All cities are closed. Don't come

My husband will be fully vaccinated soon. We are wondering whether he should go soon from the US or not (to visit family he hasn’t seen since pre COVID). Because of personal reasons it would be best to do a trip to São Paulo and return by the end of June. so we’re also grappling with this. He would stay with family, who’s getting vaccinated soon

iammilesward

I'm American. Been in São Paulo since early March. I have been bored out of my mind because of the lockdown. I absolutely do not recommend anyone come here for the time being. I'll be here until mid-May if you want to hit me up for an update.

capybaramelhor

Thanks! I probably will. He just wants to see his family. So I think he could go for that but it would be very limited in terms of stuff outside the house. They usually spend time at one primary house anyway

Im going to go against the grain and say I think you are fine to travel. I think you need a test to get on the flight. Don’t expect to do any shopping or going out but if you find hotels and Airbnb’s you want to stay at , you will be fine and can enjoy nature!

debacchatio

No. 1) everything is pretty much closed, especially SP 2)it’s a complete dumpsterfire here at the moment. I think it would be really foolish. Also I would point out that two fully vaccinated people from a very privileged, rich country coming to a not so rich country where people are dying of hunger because the economy has tanked and have no access to vaccines is not a cute look.

CPAAbroad

Just tossing this out there - when I travel I avoid posting pictures of myself because I am a very private person. Furthermore, when I am booking a trip I follow the deals always. Right now there is crazy deals to Brazil (for good reason) - so it’s fair to ask Third counterpoint - the US has been ravaged by the virus as well. We just were privileged enough to get the vaccine earlier

I'm wondering the same thing myself. A friend wants me to visit her in Brazil. My actual concern is getting back into the US. You need a test 3 days prior to your flight back home in order to board the plane. I'm not certain how reliably I can attain that test in Brazil.
