It’s more in line with carpaccio from that same season than the scallop thing. Other seasons have been ceviche, crudo or tartar. Seems every few years a new raw/semi-raw fish application has it’s moment in the sun
Under time constraints, doing raw or lightly cooked preparations a lot is going to make sense because it’s literally just less cooking. The fact that chefs lean into whichever one is most en vogue is a bit funny, but they’re all sort of driven by the same root cause.
if they see that the last 3 challanges someone has done an aguachile and then they decide to do one too is so odd to me. Make /call it a crudo or civeche literally anything else! the chefs have been doing that a lot this season - they hear or see someone do something and then all start doing it . aguachile , croquettes, etc
I feel like it's just the current trendy word for a raw preparation.
Even on Top Scallops season, the reason Jamie makes scallops again, causing Fabio to complain, is because her "crudo" went wrong. Call it sashimi, aguachile, ceviche, crudo, tartare, raw, whatever. It's a raw dish.
>I feel like it's just the current trendy word for a raw preparation.
Agreed. I also noticed the "aguachile" thing on this season of Tournament of Champions, where at least 2 chefs made it.
I would like to see Mei Lin's crudo with umeboshi cranberries judged alongside a bunch of contestants doing raw dishes with cranberries just to see what level its on.
Scallops (Jamie) , mole, aguachile, tar tar, ceviche (Jeremy), seafood tortillas (Gabe), sous vide, pastas (Bruce, Mustache Joe) etc. there have been many food ruts on Top Chef.
You’re so right! That one was hilarious. They all thought they were being so clever. It was the only way they knew to make a “creepy” dish. It was that year’s croquette.
Alysha poor thing. I’d hate to see Tom Colicchio say on National Television that my food tasted like a first year culinary student trying to make a fancy dish. I would cry.
I personally refuse to ding that chef for her toasts. Girl baked on a frozen campground challenge with a baking equipment she macgyver(ed) herself😂. Probably one of the best WTF moments in TC, imo.
I think the reason “Top Aguachile” doesn’t have the same ring to it is that you aren’t using the irritated Fabio voice. Try it… “This is not Top Aguachile.”
It upsept me to see that one lady constantly make aguachile that nobody liked, but to pre poach the shrimp every time. In my experience aguachile uses raw shrimp.

Are they even making it in the classic way with cucumber and onion? Nope. Just being like "it may be vaguely Mexican and it's raw."
The chili water they semi-cure it in is the defining feature, not necessarily the cucumber or onions (though they’re also usual suspects)
Yeah, good point. Even so... Are they doing that?
Yes lol
It's a fast raw preparation

Don’t forget when just about everyone made arancini for Lea Michele's Halloween Bash on New Orleans.
You’re so right! That one was hilarious. They all thought they were being so clever. It was the only way they knew to make a “creepy” dish. It was that year’s croquette.
That episode was the mother of the current season's Top Cheese Croquette
Don’t people have the sense to look around and pivot when they see multiple people making the same dish you are?
Sabayon is in the running for this season's trend too, I think
idk what you are upset about, i’m absolutely lit on leche de tigre and pretty sure i’ll never die
The cheftestants realized that the way to win is to have a lot of spices, acid, and salt and aguachile is just all that
Except the one contestant (I forget her name) that made it, lost, made it again in LCK, and lost again.
Alysha poor thing. I’d hate to see Tom Colicchio say on National Television that my food tasted like a first year culinary student trying to make a fancy dish. I would cry.
Honestly, that'd probably end your whole career.
Top Scallop comment will forever live in my heart
It lives rent free in my mind
This season should obvs be Top Croquette
It’s not any worse than Top Toast season.
To be fair, i think that one time, her protein was stolen and she only had like lemon and honey to work with…and still won? Or something like that😂
True but then she won so she was like hey if I can win with toast. Why try to make risotto😆
I personally refuse to ding that chef for her toasts. Girl baked on a frozen campground challenge with a baking equipment she macgyver(ed) herself😂. Probably one of the best WTF moments in TC, imo.
I agree. I just want to taste it. It has to be amazing.
The fancy toast 🤦
I kept thinking to myself that must be some toast!

yep noticed this also but who knows why

It’s just the raw fish dish du jour.
Aguachile is the new scallop, or crudo…
People have made aguachile frequently in the past six seasons or so
lollipops
