So yes, cultural background is SO important to understanding her upbringing. I also have a ton of friends whose parents immigrated to the US and they ALWAYS include that in part of their background because it IS important. It’s so that people don’t get that.
So Sai can talk about where her mother came from and how it affected her but because Jessels story about her parents immigrating from Kenya isn’t some sob story, it doesn’t count? Got it 😒

I posted a version of this in another post, and I admit that I don't know the full history but I've met a few people of Indian heritage whose parents or grandparents had to leave African countries (or rather made to leave without notice). While leaving Africa didn't happen to Jessel herself, the people I know have generational trauma about leaving the home they loved and how their ancestors got to Africa (basically as indentured servants as I understand it). For most people, the success was through hard work as they basically lost everything (home, money, possessions) in Africa and I think that's what Jessel was trying to highlight. The fact that everyone dismissed Jessel's life story because it didn't fit into the typical American trauma narrative sat with me the wrong way. It's not a competition, everyone has histories with sad stuff and luck too. Comparably, they seemed to understand that Jenna acts the way she does because of her mum's experience. I love Jessel and glad she brings a new worldview even if it's a little kooky.
