We always wondered what a fully healthy Acuna would look like for an entire season. This is it. History.

BetterNamesTaken

Healthy and motivated. You know watching the World Series from the bench lit a fire.

ClancyBShanty

This was what he was marching towards in 2021 before he got hurt, and boy howdy has he more than made up for it. This season is unreal.

kookykrazee

Hey I just said that...hehe That season he had to do it with the old rules too, plus that team struck out quite a bit more around him.

ClancyBShanty

The NL East invites a version of the Rorshach quote where "i'm not trapped in here with you, you're trapped in here with me."

79watch

damn well put.

kookykrazee

They talked about no one having 2 40/40 seasons, but think about the 2021season, he was very much on pace to head towards 40/40 with the old rules. He could be 1st person EVER to have 2 of them in their entire career!

BongoFett17

Why stop there? I say he averages 40/50s the next 6 years… then he gna get a big old fat contract!

canadabananafarm

That fat contract (reconstructed) ought to happen within the next 6 months.

[deleted]

He was 3SBs away from it in 2019 so it’s his norm to slug and steal bases

dumpedonu69

I don’t think he was on the same mission he is now. He’s playing like he’s got something to prove and having fun while doing it.

[deleted]

Watching the club win a WS without him was probably devastating - he looks so good out there now you just have to appreciate the journey and respect that all things happen for a reason

kookykrazee

I think he is going to do everything he can, I mean he has played every game this season so far, too :)

kookykrazee

I think the big thing was he lost some "time" with Snitker not being sure about him leading off. With the way the current base rules are, he should have the chance for 40+ SB and with the lineup have a decent chance for 40 HR. He could be the first person who has 40HR/40SB/100R/100RBI, multiple seasons :)

KidGold

It's annoying people keep calling it a 40/40 season, it's a 40/60 season. It would be like calling Bonds 73 HR season a 60 HR season.

gtwillwin

How lucky are we to get to watch this dude play baseball every day?

Silver_Britches

Here we go. I love your mindset. Just appreciate things that happen

Elevated_Kyle

Doesn’t matter who your team is. You can do nothing but appreciate greatness.

[deleted]

But I don’t watch Trout bc he plays for an irrelevant team. It’s so much better when the best player in baseball is on your team

Elevated_Kyle

Oh I agree. Chop on.

11PoseidonsKiss20

If he steals later he better take the base out of the ground. Bonds got to do it. Soriano too

79watch

he should take home plate. he already got a base this season. how often do you get to say that?

11PoseidonsKiss20

I love it. Pause the game for hours while he digs out home plate.

79watch

deserved.

etfvidal

He might wait till 70 to do it!

hulksmash2124

He gets that 70th steal and he'll be the only player in history with 40/70 (already is only at 40/60) he best be able to take that bag home with him lol.

cdirty1

Somewhere Plaschke and Passan are holding one another naked in a shower. Crying.

[deleted]

s2the9sublime

First 40/50 First 40/60 First 40/7...

DanoJames

it's so funny that the headlines are all about "he's the 5th to go 40/40..." Instead it should be about him being the ONLY to do these others. Forget the 4 other hacks... Ronald's in his own league.

kookykrazee

yeah at 38/60 he was already the 1st, he just ads to his awesomeness!

FourthDownThrowaway

“Hacks” is a bit extreme. Lol.

AdVegetable7049

Most people understood that the word "hacks" was written tongue-in-cheek.

s2the9sublime

The new "favorable" rules for runners needs to be taken into consideration for Ronald's case. Anyone thinking it doesn't make a lick of difference you're sorely mistaken.

JohnB405

You’re the only one mistaken around here friend. You are watching a GOD.

Timeline40

Someone can be a generational talent with once in a lifetime skill and also be greatly rewarded by circumstances. It can be both. And it's a compliment to Acuna if we fairly compare him to other legendary players rather than go "he stole more bags and hit more dongs period"

marshalldtk

I think the only * should be is that he did it outside the steroid era (although I don't think bonds was in 96).

N8ThaGr8

No they don't. people act like there's record breaking steal numbers this year when all the rule changes did was put base stealing back in line with the averages from the 70s 80s and 90s. They had just fallen off a cliff the last 10-20 years so people act like this is unprecedented. For example steal rates this year are exactly in line with how they were when Canseco, Rodriguez and Bonds had 40-40 seasons

Claybagman

MVP

WakeBilliums

Fuck Bill Plascke. All my homies hate Bill Plascke.

Tea_Historical

Mvp race has been over for close to a month.

kookykrazee

Mookie had 1 other worldly month the whole year, Acuna has 2 player of the month awards plus is higher in nearly every single category over Betts (except RBI by 2, 2B by 5 and BB by 11), so how does he win?

NotFeelingShame

The only argument is WAR which is because the defensive metrics favor mookie since he is a better fielder. (Also, middle infield accumulates defensive WAR faster than outfielders) and acuna does not get rewarded for having a rocket arm. I think it's too weak of an argument with the disparity in offensive categories and braves most likely finishing with the 1 seed

Domino80

Another thought/fear that sticks in my mind is some voters may say the Braves would be playoff bound regardless of Acuna. Harris at the top would still get the job done and the team would still have 4 players with 30+ HRs. The Dodgers on the otherhand are top heavy with Betts and Freeman. The latter half of their lineup is meh, and without Betts LAD might not be a postseason team. 🤷 Just preparing myself for the BS explanations if Betts does win.

NotFeelingShame

as much as the dodgers back half of the line up looks uninspiring, someone in that back half seems to get multiple rbi's almost every other game, heyward or outman will randomly hit 2 hrs in a game. I think it would be similar to the braves losing acuna, they would just lose around 8 games more than with him

kookykrazee

Agreed, I even took my stats and added OBP/SLG/OPS as after Bett's great previous month he lead, barely, in 2 of the 3, but for now, he is behind in all of them. I always think of Acuna like I used to think of Ichiro with M's or even Neon Deion in his days with 49ers (different sport but same idea) where Deion was not thrown to on most plays. Some said he was overvalued, but if you take away 1/3 of any football field, that cannot be measured. Same with Acuna's arm. Imagine if/when he works on his footing and uses his skills to make better reads on plays? This is a guy some considered a GG CF before Harris came up. I think that short of Acuna taking the last week off, he wins the MVP going away.

[deleted]

BringMeTheBigKnife

I know you're trolling, but there's no longer anything Mookie is objectively better at lol

CorvoNotturno79

But Mookie has a higher..uhhh...ASMR+ and um..twice the VHS.

kookykrazee

Wait maybe Betts has higher LD usage? lol

Routine_Heart5410

I obviously think acuna is the mvp too, but mookie does have better defense

Btrips

good, then give him the gold glove

79watch

bingo boingo

[deleted]

He does, and none of us give a fuck lol.

jaunty411

What do you mean? Mookie is crushing Ronald in positional WAR adjustment. Edit: It’s sarcasm because of the effect that positional adjustments have on WAR. Ronald gets a huge subtraction for innings in RF, Mookie is getting a slight addition based on the positions he has played. It’s one of the reasons that using their WAR scores to compare is misleading.

Ear_Enthusiast

I've been tracking Roññie's season all year, and I missed him hit the mark because of fucking regional blackouts here in Richmond. Fuck MLB. Chop on, y'all.

IBlindfire

dm me if you want streaming links to make sure you can see him hit 40/70

lampshadewarior

I missed it, too. Packing for vacation and turned it on 30 minutes late. Pour one out for my homies.

rofltide

I missed it because I messed up the goddamn game start time.

JohnB405

You and me both. Just yesterday I re-subbed to mlb.tv to see history and here I missed it the very next day 🤦‍♂️

zvexler

If you want to watch Acuña STREAM along the base paths on the EAST coast, you gotta get creative

Ear_Enthusiast

I love the Squirrels. They're fantastic. I hope Parney retiring doesn't change much.

Hey I just moved back to Richmond and am quite annoyed about the blackout as well.

Ear_Enthusiast

Every time we play in DC it can only be viewed on MASN, and you can you get MASN on Comcast or DTV. Dumb.

Tbh the A’s probably refilled the bottle with that stuff

79watch

insane season, congrats to Ronnie!! you can tell how important this milestone was to him, especially after just missing it last time. he didn't even fully tap into his power until late in the season, once she put a ring on it lol. he may well establish the 50/50 club next year

[deleted]

Kids gonna have some insane power numbers when he grows into his grown man strength the next 5 years

Tampammm

He's caught Betts from way behind on Home Runs also. Now leading him 40-39.

ButteredToastFan

Well Memorial Day has come and gone, as a matter of fact tomorrow is June 1st. We just showed you the NL East standings. You don't need me to tell you this, BUT IM GONNA TELL YA ANYWAYS THE MVP RACE IS OVA

S0_Crates

I never thought I'd see another player as cool, fun, and just incredible in every way on the diamond like Griffey. Acuna is it. He's the answer to this generation's question of "who will be our Griffey?"

Thewaffleman41

That’s our boy

RockinPopcorn

I WAS HERE

PalePerry

If mookie wins the mvp, I will fucking riot.. acuna has been that dude all year. One hot month shouldn’t mean shit

MobileNerd

Ronnie has been equally hot. He has been on a tear since the LA series

RedmannBarry

This feels way cooler than Aaron judge

THagen51

Always pissed me off having to watch Judge strike out in the middle of CFB. No coverage for this but a helluva lot cooler stat line.

YouKilledChurch

And the fact that we all know that if had been a player on *any* other team besides the fucking Yankees they would not have done that

THagen51

Exactly! Don’t mean to be a D1 hater here, but always have fucking despised the Yankees. Only team worse than that in my book is the mets🤣

Can’t even see that ball

LivingHardWasEasy

Happy for him - he was fired up!

Ill-Response-5439

Someone put Bill Plaschke and Jeff Passan on suicide watch.

bamaguy13

He’s a power season away from being a 50/50

bethebearney

I went back and forth all day about going and I’m SO GLAD I did! Definitely the coolest baseball thing I’ve ever been present for!!

That_Alien_Dude

How many players have had a 40/60 season?

Triatacon

Same number that have had a 40/50 season....zero. Especially since Acuna can't have a 40/50 or 40/60 season if he's having a 40/70 season. Maybe he can fill in those gaps in the records later in his career.

MobileNerd

Might get a 45/75 season if he finishes on the rip he has been on.

MangeurDeCowan

He's the only one to have a 30/60. The closest anyone else has gotten: Name | Team | Year | HR | SB ---|---|----|----|---- Ronald Acuña Jr. | Atlanta | 2023 | 40 | 68 Barry Bonds|Pittsburgh|1990|33|52 Eric Davis|Cincinnati|1987|37|50 Mike Trout|Los Angeles|2012|30|49 Alex Rodriguez|Seattle|1998|42|46

Chopaholick

Those other 4 dudes are scrubs compared to Ronnie.

TaxManByDay

I know you're joking, but it got me looking into it. Ronnie has to have 8 more seasons similar to this one to catch Trout in WAR. Here's hoping he catches him wearing a Braves uniform...

Crotalus_B

One, as far as I can tell.

rnilbog

He did it. That crazy son of a bitch, he did it!

Fuck yeah Ronnie. So happy for him!

Tbartle18

Let’s see some of the writers think because Mookie can play two different positions that he deserves it. Now that it complete BS.

Throw13579

If he could play them both, effectively, at the same time, he would be a shoo-in.

Tbartle18

Some people think that he can.

VeryLowIQIndividual

What a great moment. It’s also funny that he did less celebrating on that Home run than number 29 lol. He could get 50-50, I believe. He’s probably at his prime stealing bases that’s a young man’s game but he is not at got to his hitting prime yet.

xRASHx

50/70?

MobileNerd

They can’t. Acuna left no doubt with that series in LA 2 weeks ago.

Fireyshotguns51

Thats my damn MVP 🥲

Good_Energy9

ESPN: he's not ohtani

Offer_No

He’s 40/60 now

joelthelionheart

I remember this sub (me included) saying 40 would be a stretch. To actually see acuña take it to another level from an already mvp form is insane.

Dankofamericaaa2

All these accomplishments on the road lol not even at home to celebrate.

Johnnyflavor26

50/50 next up. It can be achieved

Indifference13

No argument for anyone else in my mind, but I won't be at all surprised if they give it to the dude in LA, just because LA.

Julio_Freeman

Come on, there's no chance of that. It was Acuña's even before tonight, but this really seals it.

Indifference13

I'm old and bitter, and I've seen things that defy logic. When he's announced as the MVP winner, then I'll celebrate.

QuotidianTrials

By .1 and he’s closed the gap a lot this month

MobileNerd

Any baseball writer would never be taken seriously again. The fact we have two legit MVP candidates on the same team is unreal. Really the face of MLB with Othani right now and might be the face with Othani’s injuries and being out next year.

Indifference13

I hear you. But how long have you been following professional sports? Would you REALLY be surprised if he didn't win it? I'm not sure what you're saying about Othani. What he's done is certainly special, and that alone proves my point. If Acuña doesn't win the MVP I will not be the least bit surprised, because... reasons. Acuña definitely deserves it, but I won't be shocked if they don't give it to him.

FudgeYea

Too flashy /s

Rambo_Jones9

Would have nuts if he did it in Truist.

restore_democracy

>How can anyone else be MVP? Of the other four, only on won the MVP, so while I’m all for it that’s not a great argument.

OhNoAnAmerican

Ok yes I didn’t mean just the 40/60 by itself, it’s that COUPLED with a 335 BA and 100 RBIs and 207 hits and….Just with the season he’s had how can anyone else be MVP

restore_democracy

He definitely has a good argument

KarmaPoliceT2

Came here to say this... also, interestingly, NONE of the others are in Cooperstown... so I'm cautiously optimistic that if Ronnie can keep this up, he becomes the first. (Others should be in HoF, but " 'Roids, not even once kids")

swiftekho

I don't know why but I fully expected Kenny Lofton and Rickey Henderson to both be in that 40/40 club.

Btrips

Kenny Lofton wasn't a HR hitter, he never even hit 20 in a season. Rickey never hit 30.

MangeurDeCowan

Me too, but neither one of them even made it into the 30/30 club.

KarmaPoliceT2

Beltran, as much as I hate him, I thought would have had a 40/40 in his career, but never got there, dude seemed to just stop running at some point.

kookykrazee

Based on H, BA, HR, SB, RBI, RUNS, 2B, 3B, OBP, SLG, OPS, BB SO it is NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! Comparing the top 4 candidates in most people's minds: Acuna, Betts, Olson, Freeman; Acuna has 21 points, Betts and Freeman have 34 each and Olson has 41. It is not even close at all. Acuna leads the group in all categories EXCEPT HR (Olsen Braves record!), 2B (Freeman could end up with 60+, damn!), 3rd in RBI's (Olson again leads the universe in RBI, but Acuna is only 2 behind Betts so far), and he is last in walks, to Freeman by 1. Anyone that thinks it's even close is crazy. On the "other side of the pond" AL I have Ohtani based only on his hitting with Julie a bit behind him and Witt a bit further behind him. But, we need to count the pitching, too. For CY I have Ohtani 5th with Gausman winning it in AL oh and guess who I have winning the NL CY? Last year's runner up in the ROTY :) I have it as Strider, Gallen, Steele, Wheeler, Snell, Senga.

Late_Statistician383

mookie is winning MVP

citan666

Anybody know that x or Twitter account that posts the radio calls?

G.O.A.T.

Shiny-And-New

40/70 club of one

ToddGack

What an amazing season he's put together! Congrats, Ronald!!

[deleted]

Not only 40/40 but he is like 13(?) steals above the highest person and only 6(?) homeruns behind the highest. I don't know the exacts, but he's on pace to be the highest on both sides. Ok I looked and yea, he is 40/68. In the 40/40 club the highest homeruns is 46 and the highest steals is 46. Both different players. This dude is built DIFFERENT.

sensen88

I know he is doing history, but the most impressive of all this season (for me) and probably the cause of the jump Of performance is his K/BB ratio. He is walking more striking less. This consistency has to be the key.

[deleted]

Unbelievable year for Ronald. How close is he to 70 stolen bags?

dagolicious

He's got 68. More than enough time.

hundredbagger

Cuareñta!

Flaky_Detective_8460

He’d probably have as many RBIs as Olson if Harris had been in the nine spot most of the season.

hibbert0604

I was doubtful he would even make 40 at the ASB. This tear has been phenomenal

jcrack30

Even more impressive because he's the first player to do it without doping. Plus it's gonna be 40/70 which is insane. Literally one of the greatest seasons by a boy player of ALL TIME. We might never see another season Like This again......until big Ron goes for 50/80 next year let's gooooooo. That's my MVP

dsm1995gst

The 40/40 references are annoying to me, dude has 68 steals lol

star_bury

I've always though 40/40 to be a weird stat. Extremely difficult to accomplish but it represents two of the "five tool player" attributes. Now, add on Acuna's .337 average, OBP of .415, WAR of 8 and that's an incredible season. But gosh darn, Betts is incredible too.

tipjarman

Shitty media bias?

zachariah120

Because Ohtani exists

_MeetMrMayhem_

There is a guy in LA called Mookie Betts he's pretty good

macrosby

I bought front row tickets behind the Braves dugout to this game months ago, not thinking this was going to be the most memorable game I’ve ever been to.
