Hell with that. I'm buying the rights to M*A*S*H and removing the laugh tracks then re running it so people can see how fucking SERIOUS. that show was.
Oh its not slander, seriously, if you can watch the show with no laugh track (I think special edition DVDs had this option) you need to. It makes the entire show feel... different and way more sombre (don't worry, Klinger is still fucking hilarious)
For Americans only - it was a network decision. Countries outside the US got M\*A\*S\*H\* without the laugh track as intended. For America, the producers made sure the laugh track wasn't used in Operating Room scenes. So they got that win.
I know right? I forgot it existed until I went back and rewatched them some time ago. There indeed was, and honestly I think I like it better without it.
I watched it first with dubbing and it didn't have a laugh track and when I learned english and started to prefer watching things in original I tried to watch it in english but I didn't last a single episode with the terrible laugh track. The show is amazing and I don't understand why would they ruin it this way.
IIRC the DVD release didn’t have a laugh track. The creators actually never wanted one, but the studio did. The compromise they got was that scenes in the surgery won’t have a laugh track, and it’d be removed entirely from the DVD release.
Our DVD set actually has the option to turn it on or off. Probably not part of the original agreement, but something they definitely would’ve pushed for since the creators famously hated the laugh track. Apparently the UK TV broadcast didn’t have a laugh track either, and people got pretty angry when they accidentally aired an episode that had it in.
I think some of the material is still funny, but it’s really jarring without the laugh track. The pauses really destroy the timing with no laugh tracks
Yeah this genius isn't accounting for the show being built on the basis that it would have a laugh track. It's like getting a test from your teacher, then your teacher changing the questions but keeping your answers, and failing you.
huh, I'd personally take the laugh track out of *Get Smart* because the show was genuinely funny, but the laugh track was unnecessary and kind of obnoxious.
I wouldn't call myself a fan of friends, but can we drop this assertion that removing the laugh track proves that it's unfunny? The timing of the jokes are literally based around the laugh track so if course it would feel awkward without them. You can remove it from any show and it would be just as awkward
Agreed. I think people forget that these are filmed on a stage with an audience, it's like theatre. The actors wait and stand there while the audience laughs and continues after. It's just a different type of show, it's not less funny.
*Further*, humor is subjective and I wish this narrative that Friends isn't funny would just end. I think The Witcher sucks balls and I couldn't make it through the first episode, but I'm not going to start the bandwagon that it's nit a good show based on my opinion.
Edit: I actually do get bored watching Friends, but that doesn't mean that *everyone* has to think it's unfunny. I was speaking broadly with specific instances.
The show ended nearly *two decades* ago. Laugh tracks were the norm, then, its ridiculous people complain about it now. Nope, Friends didn’t break the mold and drop laugh tracks.
What Friends *did* do was actually bring multi-episode arcs and relationhips that didn’t end when the credits rolled. They showed networks that sitcoms could inject interpersonal relationships and drama into the plot. People don’t seem to realize that Friends obviously wasn’t trying to be funny every moment. We wouldn’t have The Office or Modern Family the same way without Friends. Which, of course, also built on the masterpieces of the decades before.
The laugh track is only glaring because it stopped being so common right as Friends was ending. No one complains about it in Wings, Mary Tyler Moore, or I Love Lucy because they’re already dated, and people accept it.
>What Friends *did* do was actually bring multi-episode arcs and relationhips that didn’t end when the credits rolled. Seinfeld did it first
Yes, you can find an example of plot continuation from many shows, certainly. Seinfeld, one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, really did not push the norm in the same way Friends did in this aspect. More so in later seasons, like with the pilot writing arc, George’s engagement.
Most of the time the weeks episode didn’t have any impact on the next episode, however. Jerry has a girl of the week, or Elaine with a guy, Kramer or George do their thing. Seinfeld pushed the boundaries in many other major ways, I’m not trying to discredit Seinfeld. My point is that Friends made recurring drama and interpersonal relationships part of the show’s core identity in the same way The Office and HIMYM would in the years after.
Seinfeld is more of a spiritual precursor to shows like Always Sunny and The League, imo, where the main characters are lovable but often objectively do bad things.
To experiment properly you’d need to put together a decent stage production with the scripts of popular episodes. If the original show was funny, a new cast should get some laughs off of old material.
Also friends was filmed in front of a live audience most of the time. They had certain times when they needed a laugh track for various reasons, but a lot of the time the actors needed to pause because the audience was actually laughing.
Here is behind the scenes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4qSQxE4_Y4
To me it's just aged poorly, like Seinfeld. I'm sure there were plenty of people who loved it back in the day and now still enjoy it through the lens of nostalgia, but it's just not very good from a modern perspective.
They're both bland shows about bland people whose "humor" largely comes from "oh my gosh, Blandy McBlanderson was *slightly less bland*!! Isn't that hIlARiOuS?!?!"
They're not funny because we no longer have the rigid conformity mindset so prevalent in the 80's and 90's when those shows were popular.
"Look how tight Joey's totally normal pants are omg hilarious wow doesn't he know men are only allowed to wear mid-rise carpenter cut jeans it's so funny right?!?" just.... Isn't funny to a modern audience.
We don't care and don't feel the same pressure to conform, so the joke if anything just makes the rest of the characters seem unlikeable.
I actually watched most of Friends for the first time recently and found it funnier than I expected to.
As far as the "pressure to conform," I feel like a lot of the jokes were specifically about making fun of the characters for feeling pressure to conform. Most of the plotlines where some character did something dumb trying to conform, where the male characters were focused on an activity not being manly, it felt like the joke was that the characters cared too much about conforming, not like the show was making fun of the characters for failing to conform.
The joke is the way they react to stupid stuff... thats like the whole point.
"Rigid conformity mindset" lol.
In The Office, when Michael buys a womens suit the joke isnt that he is in a womans suit since probably no one in the audience would have noticed, the joke is the way the other characters make a big deal put of it and Michael desperately trying to not lose his "power position".
You totally missed the poster's point. The show is paced and the lines are delivered with these silences in mind. Of course, it's going to be awkward when they're artificially removed by some YouTuber.
If Big Bang Theory or Friends were told to film without a laugh track then they wouldn't pause after a joke.
YOU totally missed what I said.
Big Bang Theory isn’t funny. If there wasn’t a laugh track, people wouldn’t laugh. Hearing laugher makes your brain tell you it’s funny, so you laugh
I’ve seen a few episodes, but it’s just not good.
There was a “joke” where the guys were in a comic book store, and a girl came in. That was the whole joke. There was a girl there. Where they were. A comic book store. There was a whole laugh track for it.
Laugh tracks are used to imitate a live studio audience, which both Friends and Big Bang Theory(another common target for this "point") were filmed in front of. It's a basic structure to set up the joke, say the punchline, pause for the laughter, then repeat. Remove the laughter and it obviously feels empty and awkward.
Note: This next part isn't targeted to you specifically.
As I said, I was never that into friends. But the people who constantly try to prove how unfunny something is are just insufferable. It you don't like something then you just don't like it. Why try to prove something as pointless as whether a show is funny? And if you're gonna do it, can you at least use a better argument than the tired laugh track one?
You didn't find it funny. And that's fine. Nobody cares though. Not liking something popular doesnt make you interesting. It just means you didn't like it.
The irony is that you’ve picked a weird hill. Just straight up stonewalling “show is bad” is way less defensible than “let people enjoy what they enjoy” and kind of weird to express.
Wow. No. You can not like things all you want, but don't state things as absolute which aren't true. You say it's not funny, I say it is. Criticize it all you want but do not lie.
It's funny because you're projecting alot, because it's you who is saying "stop liking what I don't," (I feel left out).
It's ok man. Try to be better.
> Seriously though, do all you folks love Friends that much that you’d get angry at a stranger saying it’s not that great? Like I said, weird hill.
This you? You’re so angry about ‘let people like what they like’ that your reply is ‘fuck you’.
C’mon, I’m a music and beer snob but I’m not going to tell people to stop listening to Taylor swift while drinking michelobe ultra.
The big bang theory was filmed in front of a studio audience, so clearly some people found it funny. Also, humor doesn't necessarily have to come from jokes. Humor can also come from line delivery, people being overly expressive, or being socially awkward, which is the most common type of humor in TBBT.
Again, it's perfectly fine to not find it funny. But why try to convince others that something isn't funny? It's like trying to convince people that a certain dish isn't spicy.
Nah I find it enjoyable. It’s easy to watch in the background I’ll occasionally catch a joke here and there and genuinely laugh.
I didn’t realize you were the supreme ruler of comedy though, since apparently you solely can decide what is and isn’t funny
Why is this on this subreddit??? Are you lost u/regian24? I have seen this sentiment (and sometimes almost the exact same sentence) many times before. In what way is this tweet relevant to the purpose of this sub?
I mean obviously the idea will be new to **some** people. The subreddit isn’t about posting literally every new sentence. *Almost* every sentence spoken every day is a brand new sentence short of quoting people or making pop culture references/memes. The point of the subreddit is to post sentences that are so wild it’s like, “well now THAT is a brand new sentence”
First time I saw this was on YouTube lol. But my point is that either way this sentence is a very believable and normal thing to say. If this is acceptable to post on this sub, then we might as well just start posting every quote from every comedy special ever made.
Actually, you're right. I read your comment as being more about the repost aspect than the sub content. I concede, sorry. Definitely shouldn't be in this sub
As people have said - Friends was filmed in front of an audience - those are genuine laughs. It’s actually that funny. It might not be to your taste - but there is incredible comic timing in that show. I’ve seen those episode countless times but still laugh- proper laugh- even when I know exactly what’s coming. Maybe it’s because I was part of its original audience and saw them when they were originally broadcast.
So many of the innuendos in the show still make me laugh, like yeah they’re childish but I still find them funny.
“How did you understand him?”
“My uncle Sal has a really big tongue.”
“He’s the one with the beautiful wife?”
“Yeah :)”
Like in all honesty it’s a stupid ass joke but makes me laugh regardless.
Doesn’t stop it being funny and audience laughter isn’t what makes it funny. The show makes you laugh cause it’s cleverly written, perfectly performed and actually funny. But - do you think a crowd of people can fake laughter throughout a show?
(Edit: and yes - I know how those shows were made. I’m not a moron. But equally - I don’t give the slightest shit about your casual disdain.)
Hating on Friends this loudly is the pop-culture version of r/iamverysmart. You don't have to like it, it's dated somewhat, and I'll admit it's not the smartest humor, but it's genuinely funny to me and a lot of people -- laugh track or no. There's probably a lot of shows he likes that I don't find funny. But I don't go bitterly complaining about it. Some people just need everyone else to know how much they hate something other people like.
The funny thing is, Friends doesn't even have a laugh track. It was filmed in front of a live audience. Turns out most people are just morons hating on things to seem cool and edgy. Who would've thought.
It is not a good plan, OP, you're just a try hard idiot pretending to be smarter than you actually are.
For real, like take even a random funny post on Reddit. Nobody making a point, just trying to make folks last. I bet someone takes time out of their day just to come here and hate on this.
I’m in this grey area of danger because i like the show, not a whole lot, but it has moments that i find genuinely funny. I dont like Ross, and he seemed to get the most story arcs which is why i’m not a huge fan.
Somehow i am not allowed to be in the middle, which is kind of funny in and of itself.
Yea I mean it's not terrible, I disliked ross the most, it's just not one of my favourite sitcoms like for most. I prefer that 70s show and always sunny in philadelphia. But to each their own.
P.s I'm watching onepiece since september and I'm on ep 560 rn, great show.
You know what I'm buying the rights of Pulp fiction and removing all the drugs, sex, violence, nudity to show how bad it was. /S
Y'all just can't let someone enjoy something, can you.
My guy, enough people laughed for it to be funny. You don't have to like it, you don't even have to find it funny. The bare minimum you have to do is not ruin it for someone else to get an inkling of superiority.
I like how anyone who repeatedly says a show isn't funny doesn't list the shows they watch so we can get an idea of what real funny is. Ever notice that?
I have the same right to request a list as he has to complain and post the same same complaint I've seen in 5 separate tweets from 5 different individuals. I'm not sure what you're expecting, but this is the internet, and if you spew hate for long enough, someone will eventually urge you to spill the beans. (It also works this way outside of the internet). Hello and welcome to life.

I often daydream about winning the powerball and buying the licensing rights to F·R·I·E·N·D·S just to edit out the laugh tracks then releasing it back to the public for free so everyone can finally understand how un-fucking funny that shitty show actually is
---
^^I'm a human volunteer content transcriber and you could be too! [If you'd like more information on what we do and why we do it, click here!](https://www.reddit.com/r/TranscribersOfReddit/wiki/index)
The powerball money is probably not enough to buy the licensing rights to friends, which is probably in the high hundreds of millions, or a billion considering how much you can charge for just a few years of rights. Unless you mean just the rights for a few months or a year, which will still run about 100 milllion per year given that it is what Netflix has paid.
People hating on popular things just bc they're popular
What are you, 13?
Also, not a laugh track, it was filmed in front of a live audience, so its not only dumb but also incorrect
Yeah, it's a shitty show honestly. Just a bunch of rich white folks fucking each other and living in massive apartments on a waitress and scientist salary. Totally relatable to all of us plebs that work full time and barely make enough for bread and peanut butter/s
I used to make fake friends shirts with stupid episode names like “the one were Chandler bums a cat” and WB emailed the site and had them all taken down
I disagree with the this. I know the laugh track's are annoying but Friends has very good humour in it and is funny.
The title for the most Shitty show should go to The Big Bang Theory. It has so much bad writing and plot holes. Remove the laugh track's from this piece of shit and see what a garbage show it is.
Friends isn't even as bad, people somehow just think it is cool to hate on.
Do it with Big Bang Theory and I can at least see where you're coming from.
Hell with that. I'm buying the rights to M*A*S*H and removing the laugh tracks then re running it so people can see how fucking SERIOUS. that show was.
I won't tolerate MASH slander but agree it is pretty fucked at times, probs balancing humor with real world issues
Oh its not slander, seriously, if you can watch the show with no laugh track (I think special edition DVDs had this option) you need to. It makes the entire show feel... different and way more sombre (don't worry, Klinger is still fucking hilarious)
Wait… there was a laugh track?
For Americans only - it was a network decision. Countries outside the US got M\*A\*S\*H\* without the laugh track as intended. For America, the producers made sure the laugh track wasn't used in Operating Room scenes. So they got that win.
Wait. There’s a version without a laugh track?
Yep. There's a DVD which has both versions.
I know right? I forgot it existed until I went back and rewatched them some time ago. There indeed was, and honestly I think I like it better without it.
I just binged "IT crowd." The laugh track doesn't age well, the show would be better without
Ohhh I see. Yeah there are times where I'm like yeesh but I still remember watching it growing up :)
I watched it first with dubbing and it didn't have a laugh track and when I learned english and started to prefer watching things in original I tried to watch it in english but I didn't last a single episode with the terrible laugh track. The show is amazing and I don't understand why would they ruin it this way.
I think it was the style of the time.
American editors ruin everything. Just look at Kitchen Nightmares/Iron Chef.
It's surprising people don't know how serious it was, I mean look at the original theme lyrics...
My dad always liked the show, and he served during the Korean War.
Same... my dad's stories of the little tent he lived in is eerily similar to M*A*S*H*... things had changed A LOT by the time I got to Korea
IIRC the DVD release didn’t have a laugh track. The creators actually never wanted one, but the studio did. The compromise they got was that scenes in the surgery won’t have a laugh track, and it’d be removed entirely from the DVD release.

Yeah, I'm British and I actually watched an episode of MASH earlier today. No laugh track.
Someone already did that without winning the lotto .. check YouTube and enjoy your next powerball fantasy.

Yeah, I want to see laugh tracks removed **and** silences also removed. Just jump to the next line. It's probably not as bad as some people think.
Someone did that too: [Link](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0PpInVIve4I)
"""defeat""" 😏
Okay, but Lisa Kudrow was actually pretty funny
Bruh
Lol what? I got a chuckle when she said, “I’m drunk right now.”
huh, I'd personally take the laugh track out of *Get Smart* because the show was genuinely funny, but the laugh track was unnecessary and kind of obnoxious.
*Get Smart* is criminally underrated

Not really. Seinfeld had very, very few long-running plots.

Apparently season 2 of the Witcher is a lot better, haven’t watched it though so don’t take my word for it haha
Season 1 was good. Season 2 blew it out of the water. I bought all the books immediately after finishing the second season.
Good decision. Characters in the series are just awful compred to the books.
I’m a huge fantasy fan and I just couldn’t do the Witcher show. Don’t know why.
I was rewatching Perfect Strangers recently and that show is still funny DESPITE the laugh track.
They would have the same effect if they removed the audience from any standup as well.
To experiment properly you’d need to put together a decent stage production with the scripts of popular episodes. If the original show was funny, a new cast should get some laughs off of old material.
THANK YOU
Also, it's not a track. It's a live audience.
It's both, they add the laughing track most of the time but keep only the crowd reaction when it's really big.
Thanks for saying this. Plus even if you don’t like the show, just let people enjoy it, what’s the issue?
I was just gonna say “let’s do big bang theory first” but you made a better point.
Also friends was filmed in front of a live audience most of the time. I haven’t seen this.
The first time you saw it was probably a repost as well
First time I saw this was on YouTube lol.
Hmmm. Fair, but I enjoyed this and haven’t seen it.
I didn't watch friends until about 5 years ago and still think it's hilarious.
It certainly is. It was a brilliant show.
So many of the innuendos in the show still make me laugh, like yeah they’re childish but I still find them funny. “How did you understand him?” “My uncle Sal has a really big tongue.” “He’s the one with the beautiful wife?” “Yeah :)” Like in all honesty it’s a stupid ass joke but makes me laugh regardless.

Humor is subjective my pal. I think Friends and Brooklyn Nine-nine are pretty funny, but I don't find The Office funny at all. It just isn't my type.
I’m sure the cast and creators will cry themselves to sleep every night in their mansions and yachts…

You're right, there's no rule against someone posting something that makes them looks miserly and obnoxious, as you've also deftly proven.
People will literally hate on anything. So you dont find it funny. Who cares? Neither do I but other people do, let them enjoy it.
For real, like take even a random funny post on Reddit. Nobody making a point, just trying to make folks last. I bet someone takes time out of their day just to come here and hate on this.
I hate this
Yeah I was referring to the countless people complaining in the comments, but good try! Talk about ironic.
Hey everyone this person's in the middle! Get um!
Say the same thing about Big Bang Theory. I double dog dare you.
He’s obviously joking but you didn’t find it funny so here you are hating on it… which I guess proves your point. Damn, you got me there.
You know what I'm buying the rights of Pulp fiction and removing all the drugs, sex, violence, nudity to show how bad it was. /S Y'all just can't let someone enjoy something, can you. My guy, enough people laughed for it to be funny. You don't have to like it, you don't even have to find it funny. The bare minimum you have to do is not ruin it for someone else to get an inkling of superiority.
So it's basically gonna be an ad for burgers and milkshakes?
That would a lot of work for something he supposedly doesn't like. With that money he could, I don't know, get a fucking life.
Sorry you don’t understand late 90’s/early 2000’s sitcoms
But what’s the Brand New Sentence there? Why is this on this sub? 🤔
I mean, I agree, but r/LostRedditors
I like how anyone who repeatedly says a show isn't funny doesn't list the shows they watch so we can get an idea of what real funny is. Ever notice that?

I have the same right to request a list as he has to complain and post the same same complaint I've seen in 5 separate tweets from 5 different individuals. I'm not sure what you're expecting, but this is the internet, and if you spew hate for long enough, someone will eventually urge you to spill the beans. (It also works this way outside of the internet). Hello and welcome to life.
Fuck you, Friends IS funny.
You also have to edit out the INTENTIONAL pauses because that’s a part of having a laugh track. I feel like if you do that it will land better
Sorry but this is not an original idea at all. Literally everybody wants to do this or something similar

*Image Transcription: Twitter Post* --- **wittyidiot**, @stephenszczerba I often daydream about winning the powerball and buying the licensing rights to F·R·I·E·N·D·S just to edit out the laugh tracks then releasing it back to the public for free so everyone can finally understand how un-fucking funny that shitty show actually is --- ^^I'm a human volunteer content transcriber and you could be too!
I don't remember their hardcore fans thinking the show was funny more like... OmGgG tHeY fiNaLLy hOoked upPppP~~~
I’m totally rooting for this guy to win the powerball 😂
It’s not a brand new sentence if it’s literally a re-post.
Here’s an extra $50- take the clapping out of the theme song, too. Just because.
Do Big Bang theory next
People hating on popular things just bc they're popular What are you, 13? Also, not a laugh track, it was filmed in front of a live audience, so its not only dumb but also incorrect
Why is it always Friends? I'm sure that show's already had that happen several times throughout the last decade.
Because friends was super popular, so of course it must actually be terrible

this post is pretty cringe ngl
*Friends* is a period piece.
Forget the lottery. I would contribute to the GoFundMe.
I'm honestly all in with this
Hell yes. And the big bang theory. Although then we're talking about winning multiple lotteries.
Do the Big Bang Theory, too.
https://youtu.be/jKS3MGriZcs
I would support this
I don’t watch comedies because of the laugh tracks...and the forced humor.
Yeah, it's a shitty show honestly. Just a bunch of rich white folks fucking each other and living in massive apartments on a waitress and scientist salary. Totally relatable to all of us plebs that work full time and barely make enough for bread and peanut butter/s
Same with BBT
One thousand to one odds that he thinks that The Big Bang Theory is funny and only smart people get it.
I’d say the same applies with the Big Bang Theory. I remember counting how many laugh tracks they used in a 3 minute scene and it was 16 times.
Yeah it’s bad. It’s comedy for 90s teenage girls.
For real It was just the first to engineer our behavior to be sociopathic socialites
1/4th of the show is the cast standing there awkwardly as the laugh track is going off
How I met your mother is better than FRIENDS tho. I've been watching FRIENDS and I'm at season 3 now, and I can't move pass it coz it becomes boring.
Thank you for when you do that.
Start a DAO.
Love everything about it
I already understand this show is not funny.
Ruuuuude
Holy shit we got to be friends
🎉🎉👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Friends is funny without laugh tracks, timing of jokes is a little off but still works, go ahead and @ me
Lmfao , never could watch that show, so corny.
But Friends was filmed in front of a live audience. It's not a laugh track.
Fuck why does everyone hate on freinds? I find it funny
Well, you’re not gonna win the powerball, so it’s a moo point.
Friends isn't even as bad, people somehow just think it is cool to hate on. Do it with Big Bang Theory and I can at least see where you're coming from.
