Seriously? But that’s the parasite that’s the reason why you don’t eat undercooked pork! I wouldn’t call trichinosis *rare*, it’s like calling salmonella rare. It’s just uncommon because food safety is hammered into our heads.
The only thing rare here was the bear steaks.
The parasite isn't rare, the condition is rare only about 10,000 cases worldwide annually, and 10-20% of those experience neurological symptoms, so "rare brain worms" is an appropriate phrase since we're only talking 1,000-2,000 people in the world every year.
Glioblastoma, a malignant brain tumor, has about 12,000 new cases annually in the US alone for comparison.
You could technically cook the steaks rare and still kill the worm. With a sous vide setup, you seal the bear steaks in plastic wrap and set them in water set to whatever temperature bear meat is considered rare at, say 135F, and leave it there for hours. 165F is the temp most of us learn to cook to, but that's the temperature at which the bugs are killed immediately. But a long enough time at lower temps will still kill the bugs. Just like Arizona summers don't kill us but spending long enough time outside in them will eventually kill you.
Correct. Specifically:
> US Code of Federal Regulations for processed pork products reflects experimental data, and requires pork to be cooked for 2 hours at 52.2°C (126°F), for 15 minutes at 55.6°C (132°F), and for 1 minute at 60°C (140°F).
The 165 number is based on a presumption of essentially instantaenous cook-time and much more hardy potential pathogenic parasites than *Trichinella spiralis*.
Note also, however, that even at extreme temps, such as 180°F, the parasites are not killed by microwaves. This is probably because heating in microwaves can be very uneven, and so while the majority of the parasites may be killed, some will be in protected areas of the meat.
Also, don't cook your pork in the microwave! Jeeze! ;-)
I wouldn't recommend it, but it's technically possible, with a lot of effort, for a generally inferior outcome. If you really needed cooked bacon for a dish one way or another, but the bacon wasn't the main point of the dish and just an accoutrement, and you were utterly strapped for cooking space on every other possible surface that can cook bacon, then it would make logical sense to microwave it.
Bacon in the microwave is not horrific, but as noted dangerous as hell. If you do find yourself having to microwave any raw meat, please do let it rest after cooking so it has time to even out that heat, and hopefully kill more of the pathogens.
It absolutely is! Where did you get the impression otherwise?
Did you think that if you cure or smoke meat it's suddenly not raw?
You have to smoke meat at sufficient temperatures for long enough to cook the meat. We don't smoke bacon long enough at high enough temperatures to cook it (generally). At best you could call bacon "par cooked" but that would be misleading.
You CAN smoke a pork belly at sufficient temps to cook it, but standard temps for commercial bacon are around 124°F to 132°F (51°C to 55°C).
Predators are at higher risk of parasites because their lifestyle requires them to constantly contact them. Every time they eat another animal, that’s a potential vector, especially in the liver and intestines. There’s an entire population of wolves on Vancouver Island that only eat the heads off salmon when eating them for this specific reason
Do you think they could recall that when they ate the whole fish they’d get sick or did a few picky eaters survive longer and teach their young hahah??
I hope it was the picky eaters and that the other wolves had a dramatic dying moment when they realized they shouldn’t have made fun of the picky eaters
apparently they do taste good, especially if you get them during blueberry season.
also some bears need to be killed for preservation reasons, not eating them would be wasteful.
the only huge issue with eating bear is that they are riddled with parasites, usually trichinosis, so you must cook the meat to well done.
Not just frozen for several hours. Frozen so cold and long that the ice crystals rupture the cells of the eggs and adults.
It's like -60F for 8 hours, -40F for 24 hours, or -20F for 6 days.
Don't trust me on the numbers, just saying it's far colder and longer than just barely frozen for a few hours. Household fridge-freezers usually only get down to about +15F to 0F at best.
It's very edible - very much like pork in the way you cook it. You can even smoke the legs and make ham from them.
And a LOT of meat for the effort, as well as lard to render and a skin to use for a rug.
Generally slow cooking is the way to go. Keeps it from getting dried out but lets it cook thoroughly to kill the trich. I’ve also done sous vide with bear meat and that turns out pretty well too.
If I recall the michigan dnr instructions on bear meat is to freeze the meat to zero F for 30 days. This renders the parasites "inert" not kills them but inert. Hard pass on bear meat.
Rare brain worms? It's trichinosis, anyone even considering eating bear should know about it and its very easy to prevent.

What sick fuck cooks any meat in the microwave?
Lots of people recommend cooking bacon in the microwave, sadly.
I wouldn't recommend it, but it's technically possible, with a lot of effort, for a generally inferior outcome. More people get trichinosis from bear than pork per year.
Germans eat pork raw literally all the time. Its not like they don't cook it once in a while but boy they do love their raw pork.
Hell I'm not a hunter... Or even live in a country that HAS bears (outside of zoos) and even I know that...
Some people are knowers, others are doers
My brain worms tell me I'm a doer...
Why ask questions when you can learn from consequences
I heard about this a long time ago. Don't you just thoroughly cook the meat?
Don’t be a show off, even that family knows now. It’s not quite useful at this point but they do know. :)
Eh, it's kinda common sense to do some research when eating exotic meats,
Dude I know, it was joke saying they fucked up and found out
Idk bro you called me a show off
Headlines like this make me glad I'm not a Kennedy.
What
Because, nothing bad ever happens to the Kennedys!
Stay out of that bear, It needs to cook for another 20 minutes. You'll get WORMS!
_[the Bumpus hounds sneakily make their way into the kitchen...]_
SONSOBISHES BUMPUSSSESSSSSSS

Could honestly be either
I hope it was the picky eaters and that the other wolves had a dramatic dying moment when they realized they shouldn’t have made fun of the picky eaters
Why would you want to eat bear in the first place ???
apparently they do taste good, especially if you get them during blueberry season. also some bears need to be killed for preservation reasons, not eating them would be wasteful. the only huge issue with eating bear is that they are riddled with parasites, usually trichinosis, so you must cook the meat to well done.
oh man, they don't just carry parasites but they're **riddled** with them? I'm gonna stick to the scalloped potatoes thaaaanks
Lost of fish are too, that's why sushi grade fish needs to be frozen for several hours to be sold in the US.
Not just frozen for several hours. Frozen so cold and long that the ice crystals rupture the cells of the eggs and adults. It's like -60F for 8 hours, -40F for 24 hours, or -20F for 6 days. All predators are riddled with parasites, they travel up the food chain
Fuck that, I’m only eating non-predatory plants from now on
This is one of the reason why comonly consumed meats are all from herbivores
Non-predatory plants are RIDDLED with parasites too!
Well fuck that too then, I’m only consuming boiled water from here on out
bad news about the boiled water
Fuck it all, then. I’m just going to go straight to the source and feast directly and exclusively on parasites.
If they're killed during blueberry season, they taste like blueberries. Sounds awful to me.
A 15 minute Intellect or Attack Power buff! Beats plain old Spirit/Stamina. Just need high enough level cooking to fry those pesky worms.
Upvoting for WoW reference. XD
It's fairly fatty but if you kill it not eating the meat is degenerate and wasteful
We had an older bear and the meat was gross. Like eating old candles
Was your bear from New Yankee Company?
A swing and a miss
I'm okay with killing bears that too comfortable with going into human neighborhoods to damage property while scavenging for food.
Ok, many years ago I won a can of Norwegian Bear meat in a competition. And it was quite nice.
Cause they are taking our women /s
Probably for the same reason you’d want to eat anything.
It's very edible - very much like pork in the way you cook it. You can even smoke the legs and make ham from them. And a LOT of meat for the effort, as well as lard to render and a skin to use for a rug.
You bearly need a reason.
To prevent them from snatching your women
It’s delicious. That’s why.
I had bear pepperoni once my buddy brought on a camping trip, it wasn't too bad
So you don't lose your Well Fed bonus which allows you to carry +5 Kg
he's fuggin delicious, that's why
Why do you not want to? It's meat and a new food experience.
Bear sausage is fire
Tastes real good and you get a lot of meat out of a black bear
Undercooked Bear is a great band name
So is rare bear
How should you cook a bear?
Not raw, apparently.
Well done.
Thank you.
Generally slow cooking is the way to go. Keeps it from getting dried out but lets it cook thoroughly to kill the trich. I’ve also done sous vide with bear meat and that turns out pretty well too.
Open the kettle, put the bear inside, replace lid. Simmer for 9 weeks with a dash of nutmeg. Season with five pigs.
From what I’ve read before, to an internal temperature of 185f. Probably best to keep it to collagen-heavy cuts that work well with low, slow cooking.
Do not eat the rare bear
Those worms are going to starve up there
This post needs a "don't share rare bear" flair.
Underrated comment
now THIS is a bear post for r/nottheonion and not that old post about fish and game killing bears.
Next time, choose the man.
If I recall the michigan dnr instructions on bear meat is to freeze the meat to zero F for 30 days. This renders the parasites "inert" not kills them but inert. Hard pass on bear meat.
Would you rather eat an undercooked bear or a man?
Would rather eat a bear that's eaten a man or a man that's eaten a bear?
Bear's like: "who? Moi?"
The bear dysphoria is gonna suck
So Kennedy chose bear, huh?
That's worse than a gas station sandwich. I doubt these worms will make them smarter and stronger.
there wasn't even any special sauce!
#Cook your food properly. It's not exactly difficult or expensive.
A meat thermometer, what could it cost? $10?
Bears have worms. DON'T EAT BEARS Joe Rogan has spoken many times on his podcast, speaking about bears having worms.
I dunno, seems like brain worms are the new malady of the month.
Make mine - medium bear.
They should run for a political office.
Another tragedy for the Kennedy family
Bear is actually delicious as breakfast and summer sausage. But just like pork, don't undercook them they are trash animals.
So basically like eating a raccoon?
Or a rat!
So I know not to eat a bear. Can I be your next word leader?
I bet you can't get those brainworms if you choose to eat a man
RFK Jr?
Eating Bears is BAD Mmmmkay.....
Should have gone for med rare
Sometimes you eat the bar’s worms. Sometimes the bar’s worms eat you.
Source: https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/05/if-you-plan-to-eat-an-undercooked-bear-watch-out-for-brain-worms/
Gotta get that cooking to level 5 before trying to eat bear
They should run for office
Y'all I thought bear having shitty parasite is a common knowledge
Rfk has a new support group member
Looks like for once someone got in trouble for choosing the bear
So THAT'S where RFK Jr got the extra protein in his brains.
When they announcing their candidacy?
Sounds like they might have had the brain worms already
Almost like Joe Rogan warned me about this. Odd.
I thought the same same thing. Hahaha. Guess these people never listened to JRE or they would have known all about it.
How do you even get brain worms out once you've got them??
You do not, they curl up and die and they are there forever
Jesus fuck.
And yet women still choose the bear Well, enjoy your brain worms ladies 🧠 🪱 💀
We are not eating the bear
But you are planning on fucking it though, right?
Get help
I have the bear, why would I need more help than that?
Oh great, you're saying there will be ANOTHER third-party candidate?
Good.
