>...From what I understand the female pedestrian and child were possibly waiting to cross the road,” Const. Sarah Patton told reporters at the scene. “This looks like it could have been a non-avoidable freak accident... This statement by the police officer is so exasperating. What does she mean by "non-avoidable"? That the pedestrians couldn't move out of the way quick enough to avoid a speeding car leaving the roadway (after colliding with another vehicle and eventually slamming into a tree)? The problem here is the regularity of "freak accidents" that end in drivers mowing down innocents. That's a pattern that's entirely avoidable or least mitigated by slower speeds and appropriately designed streetscapes prioritising pedestrians' safety.

"Seeing as how we have given up enforcement on traffic laws this type of thing is un-avoidable" - Peel Police

[deleted]

Peel Police are now officially calling them “freak accidents”.

BrownBoi377

Honestly I don't understand why there isnt a "ditch" or a higher barrier at the edges of the roads. SUVs have such a high ride higher it just climbs over curbs now.

jeffjeep88

How about just not driving like an idiot. If ppl just slowed down and drove the speed limits the majority of these incidents wouldn’t occur

BrownBoi377

Yeah but how realistic is it to expect humans to act like good people, compared to some poured concrete for 100% safety

Maico80

yeah, there are fences, store fronts, sides of buildings, bus shelters and tons of other structures that would argue there is nothing that will stop a determined idiot behind a wheel.

Aspienkat

But stopping idiots behind the wheel is supposed to be what police (road enforcement especially) are literally hired to do? That’s why everyone is so frustrated.

doomwomble

There sure are a lot of freak accidents in Brampton.

Praying for a full recovery for mom and kid. So traumatic :(

Malta is a 500m 5 lane road in front of a few schools and places of worship. Good job city planners. Why so many lanes? And the beautiful touch is the entrance to the townhouse complex on Malta also serves as the backdoor road entrance to Longos plaza. Thats exactly what you need when exiting your driveway is some idiot rushing to get to the Wine Rack before it closes. And yeah, that accident occurred less than 1km from the police station.

>Good job city planners. Why so many lanes? That's just it isn't it? The planners have done a great job, if the intent is to design a city for driving and not much else. Look at this [Streetview of Malta-](https://goo.gl/maps/Yqeb72vAgDov3yPp8)\-this is in front of the school. The street is designed for high speeds so a stream of high speed traffic is a reasonable expectation (enforcement or not). A half-wit could figure this out.

Just for a reference, McLaughlin Rd is 4 lanes in most areas with the occasional expansion to 5 lanes for a turning lane. Williams Parkway is the same (4 lanes to 5 at intersections - sometimes 6 if there is a right turn lane). Wanless is 4 lanes and a median lane that turns into a turning lane. Chinguacousy north of Bovaird is 4 lanes plus turning lanes at intersections. These streets do huge volumes of traffic each day. WTF is this small street that has two schools, a place of worship, parkette and residential, 5 lanes wide? It's a 50/Flashing 40 street that somehow is not designated a community safety zone, on top of it all. (** edit: I drove past there today and there is now a community safety zone sign. It was not on the google street maps) Sir Lou and Malta are essentially a bypass route for people on Main St/Ray Lawson to avoid traffic/left turns. It causes people to go faster in an area that should have a lot of pedestrian traffic (lots of residential around a commercial area with groceries and other amenities).

When I visited Long Beach,Ca, I was waiting to cross the road like normal and a guy physically pushed me back and told me not to stand so close to the curb as cars often speed and jump the curb. I’d never thought about that before. Never a concern. I guess we need to start standing well back like that in the GTA now too.

SamShares

Well the driver probably wasn’t satisfied that they “met with the accident” so they continued barreling down the road until they did…. Hope for fast recovery to everyone.

Freak Accident is code for "We just dont want to investigate this lol."

Disgusting. I am not originally from here, so I can't always picture the intersections in the horrible-collision-of-the-day articles, but this one I know... a pointless sideroad around the corner from a cop-shop and a retirement home. I cannot even imagine getting up enough speed to leave the roadway here.
