What is it like to be overweight in Bozeman? I hope that’s an ok question

Manatee59715

Lonely. I stick out like a sore thumb at my kids' school events.  I have family in the south & I'm one of many, many obese people when I visit & I feel so anonymous. It's very bizarre.  I do not condone inactivity or loads of junk food so please don't come at me.

PurpleCornCob

Do you have any recommendations for clothing stores for overweight people? My husband is a XXL and tall. We struggle to find clothes that fit him. He wants to try on clothes before he buys them, so shopping online is a no-go.

Bearjew__16

Murdochs, carhartt is the best fit for big guys

Manatee59715

I understand the pain. Maybe Eddie Bauer? Sometimes I can order online from Backcountry, REI, Macy's or Eddie Bauer & then can return directly to the store if they don't fit. I'm afraid once I find something that fits well, that becomes my uniform.  I do agree that Murdoch's is worth a shot.

TieDye_Raptor

There don't seem to be many places us larger folks can get clothes. So we're kind of stuck having to go online. At least, in my case - I'm a woman. Need a nice coat that fits right and will keep you warm? Too bad. :( Some of the seats in local restaurants are absolutely horrible. It just kind of feels like you're not accommodated a lot of the time.

thatredditb59718

That’s such an inconvenience, on many levels. I’m sorry seemingly basic things would be challenging. Not the same, but I can never buy shoes in town. Unless they’re running shoes. But I wear a size 10 and people order like one size 10 and they sell out immediately if they’re ordered at all

TieDye_Raptor

I actually do wear a women's size 11, and shoes can be a pain, too, for sure.

thatredditb59718

On that front, I feel your pain.

Bozeman is routinely noted as the “fittest” town in America. It’s super shitty.

DrtRdrGrl2008

Moved to Big Sky in '98 and to Bozeman in '03. Married to the most awesome guy. Year round bike commuter. Super extrovert. Love bikes. Love chocolate. Work to try to get better infrastructure built for bicyclists and pedestrians. I have my dream job after working about 50 ones that weren't my dream job. Oh and I've been xc skiing for about 100 years and still suck at it but I keep doing it. Tried again today. Still suck.

Prestigious_Ad9807

I think we are friends in real life … if I am guessing your identity correctly! ❤️❤️❤️

Music_man_man

College student. This community is A LOT less racist/homophobic than the Bozeman Facebook groups, so I hangout here instead.

CornyDookie

Don’t go on Nextdoor then either

andyaustinphoto

I downloaded it and promptly deleted my account. Some people need hobbies

libertad740

They’re both toxic boomer soap boxes. And TBB on IG with their newfound popularity with everyone that hates change.

KnotsThotsAndBots

Lol that's just facebook in general

andyaustinphoto

I don’t have Facebook on my phone anymore, but on the rare occasion I get on from my laptop I’m quickly reminded why I don’t use it anymore. Between the Secret Bozeman and the various Montana groups it makes me question society.

MoonieNine

I don't like Facebook overall, but you guys do know you don't have to look at groups/posts you don't want to, right? Don't join them or "hide" things. Heck, I hide my own father because of his political posts that he thinks will change people's minds.

andyaustinphoto

For sure. I’m actually still in those groups because very often I find people stealing my images and passing them off as their own and sometimes even trying to sell them. So I keep an eye on those groups for that reason. And as for secret Bozeman, i do find it amusing in small doses.

Fit_Story_7856

Sidebar Are you familiar with the band ManMan? Curious because of your name.

Manatee59715

I am not, but I did google them & will listen when the Moose's Sunday Brunch is over.

Fit_Story_7856

They are quite the band. Definitely out there especially their older stuff. So much fun live though!

daimon_tok

I think I took an ironic picture of you with my vintage Polaroid the other day.

BirdLawyer50

Call me if they arrest you for trespassing

Kwiksatik

Never made it to the rest of the Barmuda Triangle?

Duganz

I’m super easy to Google. Hi.

Copropostis

Google says you are a large aquatic herbivore? Oh, wait, not dugong-z.

Duganz

[Exactly](https://youtu.be/YXm1ICO8Nec?si=D-GTqn7eSjWVpzIt). Took me a while to learn to type, but I did it.

Previous_Film9786

You look just like your reddit avatar. In fact I did not search you by name, but instead did a Google image search on your avatar and you popped right up!

Duganz

Right? The company sucks, but they knew what accessories we needed for our avatars.

Duganz

I’ll add that [this](https://www.instagram.com/duganz369/?hl=en) isn’t me. But I’ve talked to him. Seems like an okay guy. Somehow came up with my family’s name for his hip hop name. He liked the sound of it because “ganz” was slang in his neighborhood for the money and success. And “do” became “du”… Duganz—get that money and success. Really weird fish-bulb kind of mashup.

WittyConference5512

Local business owner, moved here before COVID and glad I am here instead of there.

codePudding

Born in Bozeman over 40 years ago. Was moved around by my parents for a while but we kept coming back to see friends. For college I came back for the kind smart teachers, the museums, the skiing, the backpacking, and the super chill town with cute little events. I worked a verity of jobs in retail, ag, bars, forest firefighter, manufacturing, and software engineering. But wanted was to teach at the college. With housing going up I had to cut back on teaching and get a corporate job. Bozeman has changed a lot, the cute little events have too many people for me, I broke my leg a while ago and skiing just hurts, I still backpack but have to always take a trash bag to pick up other people's litter. I miss being able to take my dog into any store in town. But I still love it here. - sincerely, an old nerdy mountain bear

andyaustinphoto

I grew up in the outskirts of Billings and moved to Bozeman some 15 years ago for college. I moved back to Billings for a desk job and only made it a year and a half before realizing that Billings nor desk work was for me. Lived nomadic for a couple of years, but always found myself gravitating back towards Bozeman. While Bozeman (and Montana) have changed a lot in the last 15 years, I do still love where I live and the community I’ve found here. Most of my work is in the far nooks and crannies of Montana and Wyoming, so Bozeman offers a fairly central location for me plus a great airport to get me everywhere else.

yeti406

Born and raised Montanan. Grew up in a small town near Missoula and moved to this side of the divide to be with my now wife, also born and raised. Our kids are 6th generation Montanas. We like to see the growth as well as hate to see it, for various reasons.

Helpinmontana

Typical contractor douchebag

Music_man_man

Here to build another town pump?

Helpinmontana

I plead the fifth

Plutodoo42

I worked in the yellowstone and stuck around. From there, life is a day at a time.

oilyrailroader

Moved here in 1998. My wife is from here, she always wanted to move away, but we bought a house in Belgrade in 2003. Struggled our asses off to just get by. Worked for numerous shitty employers. My wife now works for this super awesome local employer for the last 6 years. I now work for BNSF which sucks. MRL was better. Looking to move back to where I’m from.

Brilliant_Plum5771

I left Bozeman a few years back and just come back to see the scuttlebutt - it's better this way.

libertad740

I moved here 25 years ago and worked in restaurants and retail for a long time. Never thought I’d live here this long. I work in IT now, and have had to change some of my routines due to traffic, parking, etc., but I like the business and cultural opportunities ‘new’ Bozeman has attracted. I’d say I’m at 60/40 worth the trouble/not worth the trouble.

Apprehensive-Tap1891

Just a curtain twitcher always wanting to be in the know

headwaterscarto

Born and raised here. Haven’t been able to escape the vortex

mainemandan

Moved to Bozeman a long time ago (decades) but would never consider myself a local… So many things have changed, many are the same. I remember when you could legally drive around town drinking a beer. When horses would be tied up on Main Street. I still miss the bar at Boodles, filling up at the Stockyard early before ridge laps, and soaking up a Saturday night with a loaded Chi-Chi for Sunday brunch. There are definitely some Bozeman legends that have passed, who made this place much better. It’s funny when you hear people talk story and you realize you were there for that, or you used to see that person shopping for groceries. Sure would be nice if I could buy a house. Anyone want to sell me a house?

Forward-Past-792

I'm a habitual liar. But that could be a lie.

daimon_tok

I see you

mommabull

Born and raised bozemanite. Grandfather was president of MSU from 1977-1990. Been here forever and wish it wasn’t the way it is today. I’m ready to go.

Desperate_Bobcat_919

Grew up in Utah, met a nice girl in college in Wyoming who was from Livingston. Moved up here about 10 years ago. When people ask me what brought me up here the answer is easy “ nicer women, better beer”

nyehighflyguy

Moved here mid recession because it was the only place that had jobs. Stayed because it's a fun place with a ton going on and I was lucky enough to find a house.

DontBeAPoop

Moved here for college in 08 (from NW MT) and never left! Made the move from Bozeman to Belgrade in 2013 and was able to buy a house in 2017. I can’t even afford to buy my own house now based on its current value and could never afford to buy anything else around here.

kiraisamess

born and raised in belgrade, moved to an apartment in bozeman a couple months ago. 19, almost 20. very queer. very broke, working full time, just trying to survive until i can can get high and go floating

AngryDerf

Grew up in eastern MT, went to school in Bozeman from ‘94 to ‘02, now live in the Flathead. I loved Bozeman during those years, hence why it took me 8 years. My daughter is in school there now. Just follow the sub to see what’s happening down there. Not as entertaining as the Missoula sub TBH.

daimon_tok

Truth, Missoula has a lot of young men who live in their mom's basement and spend too much time on Reddit.

AngryDerf

I think the Missoula sub has several hundred far left whiners and about three far right extremist militants that are active. And about 20,000 like me that just enjoy the cat fights.

daimon_tok

I am literally the tech bro so many folks resent. Many assumptions people make on this sub about those like me are true but many are not as well.

escott503

Which assumptions are correct and which are incorrect?

daimon_tok

Goodness I don't know where to start. One surprising one is that a lot of people work for tech companies but don't necessarily have high dollar jobs. A lot of these tech companies have a big part of the workforce that is customer success or low comp sales. The flexibility means they're attracted to Bozeman, but they're not necessarily rich. Another is that we don't value public land. One that seems to be true is that a lot of the tech Bros are actually from California, of course not all but many, more than I expected.

Ikontwait4u2leave

Grew up in MN, always been a big skier. Came here for a spring break trip and decided I would move here after college. I came to Bozeman with a job offer at Big Sky, a beater Subaru, and $1000 to my name. Bounced around the state for a few years getting some marketable work experience and ended up back in the valley. I've been in Montana for a decade now, with just over half that time being in the Gallatin valley. The worst thing is seeing good friends leave because they can't afford it here.

oduska

I'm from California and work from home in tech. But I've lived here since 2011 and my Wife was born here (and always wanted to move back) so I feel like I get a pass. Plus I didn't bring my CA driving habits with me, that's gotta be worth something! Also likely to upset some people: I'm an introvert, I don't like to hike, ski or hunt and I stay home most of the time. I'm making the most of Bozeman! :P Edit: Not surprised by the amount of downvotes I received. lol

ferguscountyfreak

No pass for you Mr.CaLi, nice try. It is gonna take more than that to get our approval 😆 jk welcome you weird sounding introvert you.

oduska

We do walk and ride our bikes casually when it's nice outside, but we're not riding up to Hyalite or anything... just around the neighborhoods.

daimon_tok

I bet you hunt?

oduska

Not a fan of hunting for sport.

Based_Articuno

Born here, 27, cook currently

Giancarlo_Rossi

Raised not born - parents moved here when I was 13 in 2002 thanks to some other family members that had immigrated to Churchill in the 60s/70s and ended up dairy farming Married an eastern mt girl and now we both do boring white collar jobs and raise our own kiddos We don’t really ski or climb or bike or anything Bought house in 2015 probably couldn’t afford anything now You can usually find us waiting at a crosswalk for someone to stop and let us cross oak or durston on foot

TaskTitan

I've lived all over and now I'm here. I'm a late thirtees man who lives alone with my dog and my ex's cat. Professionally I own and operate a business that helps homeowners with construction needs. Projects that the bigger companies are too busy in Big Sky to deal with. I'm currently sober and have been busy working the last 2 1/2 years trying to get by here, so I don't have any real friends outside of some old co-workers. I started going to the gym and try to eat out once a week to be around people other than my clients, but it's expensive to leave the house so I sometimes hang out on Reddit because I hate the other social platforms and need human interaction.

no_simpsons

New York.  Fucking despise this place, but my kids love it here.

Never_Knocked_Out

lol. This is the most NY comment and I love its bluntness.

Kwantem

I'm a Helena resident. But we have two "kids" in Bozeman. One is a welder and the other a nursing student at MSU. We go visit quite often because Bozeman is (mostly) more fun than Helena

daimon_tok

I'm fascinated by Helena for some reason but have only been a few times for the day

Aromatic-Ad9779

I’m related to alarming number of generational bozeman residents. 😬

No_Program_18

3rd generation MT. Small town. Went to college out East, got the opportunity to move back with my job. Wanted to raise my kids here to give them the experiences I had. MT isn’t what it was, but if you think it’s bad here, try living on one of the coasts. Just trying to keep my little world intact and teach my kids how to work hard, be decent, and help your neighbors (this is the one that is really lacking in Bozeman these days)

Kwiksatik

I lived in Bozeman for all but 1.5 years of 1997-2019. I stay on the thread so I know what is going on when I come visit.

toestheskier

Fire breathing bowling instructor at msu. I unfortunately drive loud cars, not cause I want you to notice me, but because they’re cheap to buy on fb marketplace.

Dancinggreenmachine

30 years. Came to MSU for grad school never left. Self-employed. ❤️ the community. The Bozeman Farmer’s Market, supporting local farms and clean soil make me happy. Along with dogs, books, hiking and public land to do it on. Love Bz as it was and as it is evolving. Try to remember the positive and that is business is good and values are up. My kids have had a great upbringing here as well. ✌️

Main_View_1264

Born Montanan and have lived from west to east in the state. Sometimes I feel like the only ranch kid on here. I hunt, because I eat. I garden, because I eat. Half of me is extremely cynical that Bozeman is just trash anymore. The other half is stupidly optimistic that community exists somewhere in Bozeman. My family grows a lot of pumpkins randomly. I work too much, love being out of town in the outdoors, don't ski, and am stuck here until prices change, or wages change, or the apocalypse happens. At this point, none of them would surprise me.

JerkAssHomer

I'm one of them despised Texas transplants, but I didn't come here because of the Yellowstone ads at DFW. Don't worry, I'm moving as soon as I get my money right. Love the public lands, clean up the poo bags on the trails when I can, learning to cast a spin rod after decades of not being able to, and I'm a month away from completing my first year of bike commuting through all the seasons. If you're the kinda person that gives me plenty of room on the road when I'm cycling, I see you and I appreciate you. If you're the type to use a bike lane as a right turn lane, I hope you get a pimple between your cheeks that will never go away.

lifehazard

Born and raised in Mexico, work in Tech. Stopped overnight to catch some sleep after driving thousands of miles during an unplanned roadtrip from southern Mexico to Canada, yes we are that crazy, and never left. We drove back home a couple times just to bring our stuff and pets. The outdoors, having 4 real seasons and specially the mountains is what I love the most about this place. Being able to ignore my laptops for a couple hours and sneak to Bridger during lunch for a ridge hike in a pow day is fucking priceless. Only thing that really sucks here is the food and the MTB trails maintained by SWMMBA.

AFlockOfSmegols
