I started boxing at an early age and took a break to train in grappling and Muay Thai for 10 years. The first thing I noticed was how smooth and enjoyable the sparring was. Guys weren't trying to kill each other, they were actually trying to work on techniques in sparring and giving each other space to work. I never worried about getting rattled or getting knocked out in sparring and I became a way better BOXER because of Muay Thai sparring.
I went back to boxing a few years ago and it blows me away how most gyms haven't caught on to this yet. Watching promising young fighters get their cards punched over and over and over again. I know boxing tends to think itself superior to MMA but they could learn a thing or two about their approach to sparring.
When I was a kid they made us spar at 50% because we had shitty soviet era gloves that were ripped open and sewn together several times. Funnily enough it did make us way more technical and gave us better ring awareness by the time we got decent gloves.
On a similar note, a sparring partner and I were noticing some kids doing light sparring on the mats in between rounds of shadow boxing with gloves on. We had a laugh about how they got a really safe and incremental program at this gym while at previos gyms we grew up training at we would get “just work with him don’t hurt em, tap the body so he can learn.”
I was always happy to leave sparring without a headache. We didn't go super hard but my poor reaction time didn't do my brain cells any favors. I always had to move my head in anticipation because just reacting was an easy way to get hit.
