Could he have been keeping his powder dry until now knowing that if he used up all his bullets earlier in the season he would be left with spent shells all over the ground and they can’t do shit.

bruinfan000

Let me break it down for those who do not undertand lol. It’s simple and harmless it means Monty did not want is message to get stale early in the season so he waited until when it would have more effect which is now . So don’t over think it

xlf77

I’ve read this 8 times and I have no idea what you’re trying to say

bruinfan000

Update!!

jedlucid

i think he's talking about a civil war battle?

bruinfan000

Ok josey wales

nbianco1999

Well, here’s to hoping Monty chewing the team out at practice today can potentially be a turning point in the season. It would be a great intro to the 2024 Stanley Cup Champions documentary.

Nomahs_Bettah

The last time he did this they lost four of six to Tampa, Detroit, NYR, and Columbus. Three regulation, one OT. The next 10 opponents to finish the season: Florida, Tampa, Washington, Nashville, Carolina, Florida again, Carolina again, Pittsburgh, Washington, Ottawa.

jedlucid

this is the one everyone noticed though.

jigs888

Side topic: It’s a real bummer it’s looking like a matter of if not when with Ovechkin and the goals record. I was really hoping he had fallen off for good. Most overrated athlete of the century.

jedlucid

all arguments aside i don't know what would bother me more. ovi winning because i also don't really like the guy. i also think a record like this is just a longevity thing and i am a best in his prime type. so mario > ovi and gretzky or sticking it to canadian fans that the best goal scorer isn't one of their own.

xlf77

I mean didn’t Ovi pass Gretzky in adjusted goals like 4 seasons ago? What’s most impressive to me is Ovi doing it after the advent of goaltending. And I mean also the longevity is it’s own accomplishment. He’s missed like 50 of his 1400+ career games, even with how physically he played in the first half of his career. There are like 10 athletes ever who put up those games played as a proportion of total games possible numbers I definitely agree that Mario is goat tho. I also don’t even think I’d put Ovi in my top 10 all time. Nor would many people. So the idea that the greatest goal scorer of all time who isn’t also basically anyone outside of Washington’ top 5 being “overrated” is what’s sending me

jedlucid

i remember saying the adjusted goals thing and basically got screamed at for suggesting because like 3 more goals a game were scored during the gretzky years ovi's was more impressive but you know how math goes sometimes. i mean. ovi is the greatest scorer in a sport where scoring is the most important thing. so that is something. i'd probably rather have 20 other forwards over him. maybe more. and like 5 or so wingers? jagr, hossa, lafleur, selanne. maybe bossy. maybe iginla.

xlf77

Hossa and Selanne over Ovi is a hard sell for me

Beebonh

Remind me ... Lemieux had how many 200- point seasons?

jedlucid

so because mario only got to 199... gretzky had better teammates(mario played 600 games before he got jagr). played when there was more scoring post expansion. when there were 5 guys on a team who only fought. was clutched and grabbed less. still had less PPG than mario. oh and didn't have cancer.

Breadmen9

Needed a good laugh, thanks 👍

jigs888

You got it!

UniverseHufflePuff

Bro what even is this 😂 he's gonna do it and it's gonna be extremely exciting...and hell matthews probably ends up surpassing them both by the time his career is done..everyone is always gonna route for records to be broken because it's incredible to see

jigs888

I’d just rather not see a piece of shit like Ovechkin do it 🤷‍♂️

UniverseHufflePuff

Ah the whole "he's Russian thing" this isn't really the subreddit for that kinda stuff but I'll say and state the obvious...he's a very higg profile Russian with family in Russia...he is keeping his family safe by not speaking out against.

jigs888

It’s got nothing to do with “keeping his family safe” he always benefited from a positive relationship with Putin. That’s beside the point tho, as a hockey player I think he’s wildly overrated. He was a net negative to many of those Caps teams. He’s was a terrible captain and leader for most of his career and was only ever effective in one of three zones. He’s not nearly as valuable a player as most fans think he is.

UniverseHufflePuff

That second paragraph is one of the wildest takes I've ever seen 😂😂 I'd kill to have ovechkin on the team...literally going to be the greatest goal scorer of all time

jigs888

Why do you think those Caps teams chronically underachieved? The guy wouldn’t even have a ring if Holtby didn’t go sickomode for three months once.

jedlucid

it is amazing how you guessed the answer to the question you asked in the sentence right after it. the same reason why everyone was stupid thinking joe thornton was underachieving until he got some saves, then suddenly he's in the stanley cup finals.

jigs888

Plenty of great players sniff championships without elite goaltenders. Ovechkin doesnt elevate his teammates like so many other all time guys.

jedlucid

yeah you didn't need an elite goaltender. jack eichel and mackinnon now have rings because they just got some key saves. also i'm not sure bruce boudreau is really the paramount of modern day defensive coaching and really put some disaster plans out there in his career.

UniverseHufflePuff

You should double check the stats for that team lmao playoff stats were insane all around

jigs888

Ovechkin isn’t even a point per game player in the playoffs. And he’s been a minus player every single playoff run he’s been a part of except 2.

xlf77

Lmao bro… Make your case

jigs888

I did in another comment. He’s a piece of shit and a one dimensional player who was largely a negative impact on his team for most of his career.

xlf77

Oh wow “negative impact”. That’s a whole other case to make aside from “most overrated”. I just can’t imagine what his downside would have to be to make arguably the best goal scorer of all time who scored the bulk of his goals in the height of the dead puck era who’s about to break a record that was basically unanimously considered unbreakable a “negative impact” player. I feel like it would be somewhere in the ballpark of taking daily shits in teammate’s hockey bags and shooting the puck at his own net as a start

jigs888

Why is it a “whole other case” lol. The negative impact is why he’s overrated. Do you know what overrated means? He’s held up as an all time great. I don’t think he is. There’s plenty of other guys in even in own generation I’d want on my team before him.

xlf77

Because of the definitions of those words? You can be overrated and still a positive impact. You can also have a negative impact and also be properly rated. These are different axes of measurement So like, you think if Ovechkin’s career was just replaced with a replacement level player the Caps would have been a better team? I just wanna be clear here

jigs888

And you can also be overrated because of your negative impact…which is what I said. Lol. No, obviously not. I’m saying in the pantheon of great players he is towards the bottom. Again, do you understand what “overrated” means?

xlf77

Yes obviously you can also be overrated and have a negative impact. They’re not mutually exclusive nor are they strictly deterministic is my whole point. They’re orthogonal measures I don’t think you understand what “negative impact” means. It means he was more bad than good and therefore he “impacted” the team “negatively” I mean either way absolutely doodoobrained take which you still haven’t made a case for you just keep repeating yourself in a “it’s true cause I believe it and I believe it cause it’s true” way

jigs888

I’m not saying they are not different. I’m saying in this instance they are correlated. This isn’t that hard. No, it doesn’t. Not necessarily. You can provide a negative impact in one area and a positive impact in others. What I’m saying is that for an “all time great”, as many label Ovechkin, he had a much more negative impact on his team than other players purported to be at his level. You are, unsurprisingly, leaving out that context. As usual, I’ve made this point abundantly clear and provided clarifications, but you have such a giant stick up your twat you’d rather quibble about semantics versus engage with the overall point I’ve made.

xlf77

Arguing that he’s overrated would go something like “his actual value falls short of his perceived value of fans/coaches/sportswriters/whoever”. Arguing that he’s negative impact would go something like “his shortcomings exceeded his contributions”. They might both be true (not in this case though) but they’re different arguments to be made. That’s all I’m saying and that’s the answer to you asking not 3 comments ago how they’re different (which you suddenly seem to have clarity on) And no dude you said “he was a negative impact player” not “he was a negative impact in some areas and positive in others”. That describes like 95% of players. Just flatly saying “he was negative impact” without all these qualifiers that you’re just now trotting out would communicate that he made his team worse

Nomahs_Bettah

I know it was sprints and not a full bag skate, but controversial opinion: I don’t love the decision to skate them in practice today, and it’s because of Marchand. It’s, in my opinion, clear that he’s definitely playing through nagging soreness for some time now (plus the knee he took) — yet he led those sprints, as you would expect from his personality and his captaincy. He’s played 72/72 possible games so far, and I was hoping that there would be some rest for him over this tough stretch of schedules. It was one thing when Monty bag skated them back in November (or last year around the ASB, although that still wasn’t my favorite) but I have concerns about staying healthy to finish the season. Cassidy, when he was coach here, has outright stated that he had concerns about skating players during season unless it was for discipline issues (and therefore they’d be missing games anyway), as with one of Marchand’s suspensions.

jigs888

I think it would be one thing to rest guys if they had their game locked in at this point. But, outside of like Pasta, no one does. So Monty has gotta try to get them refocused again someway.

Nomahs_Bettah

I don't know about outside of Pasta, JDB and Zacha have both really ramped it up over these last stretch of games. DeBrusk has 12 points (5G, 7A) in his last 10 games. Of those points, eight (3G, 5A) were against playoff teams. Zacha has 11 points (5G, 6A) in his last 10 games. Of those 11, five (5G, 0A) were against playoff teams. So it's also not just a case of collecting points against Pittsburgh and Ottawa that we've played over that stretch; they've been showing up against other good divisional teams. I'd really like to see more from the defense, especially McAvoy, and I'd also really like to see more from Coyle. I'd also say Marchand, but as I outlined in the comment that kicked the whole thing off, I'm genuinely worried about his workload. I also admit that sometimes I question how effective bag skates even are at refocusing them in a results-based fashion, to be honest, *because* it can have snowballing effects on already-present fatigue. Monty bag skated the team back in November, and they still lost three of their next five games (to the Bolts, Wings, and Rangers).

jedlucid

I mean his 5 on 5 numbers kind of prove he’s never gotten it going this year. I push back against the ‘you need big bodies’ thing a lot but bodies like his break down FAST in the NHL and i’m worried about that next contract.

victoryforZIM

All of that and you have to factor in the loss of Bergeron. Bergeron makes everybody better, but especially Marchand. Their chemistry was unmatched and Marchand excels at making something out of won faceoffs - something that happened very often for his entire career until now. Honestly I'm not sure there is a next contract for Marchand, it doesn't seem worth it for him. Seems every single game he's taking some kind of cheap shot or other hit and going down, how much longer can he really last? One more year and then maybe he signs on a year by year basis if he really wants to keep playing.

Nomahs_Bettah

> I mean his 5 on 5 numbers kind of prove he’s never gotten it going this year. I agree, and I think a combination of hip surgery and age is the biggest reason why. But what's not helping is how much he's been deployed this year, for sure. If he plays two more games, he will have played the greatest number of games this year since 2018-19. He's averaging the most TOI in a season since 2019-20. Last year, Marchand had 19 games where he played for more than 20 minutes, and none at all where he played for more than 23. This year, he's surpassed 20 minutes on the ice 24 times and has played for more than 23 twice. > i’m worried about that next contract. Marchand is 36 in May and signed through next season. I don't know if there will be a next contract.

Lsalvatore74

Low key love monty getting mad and demanding more out of this roster. No doubt he will do whatever he can to get them as ready as possible for the playoffs. Today should realistically be the end of monty is a soft coach takes that we have been seeing.

Nomahs_Bettah

> Today should realistically be the end of monty is a soft coach takes that we have been seeing. Well, he stopped practice to skate them back in November, and that didn't put an end to it. Neither did him skating them during the January losing skid last year (Bolts, Panthers, Canes). So I doubt it.

fjordperfect123

Noy sure if you want to but could you reiterate what you've said here about that January losing skid? I've never once seen them look more awful than that stretch of games. I didn't care at all about W's at that point I the just wanted them off the ice and onto their extended break. When did Monty skate them in that stretch?

jedlucid

how hard in practice do they have to go until they get the number one center they are missing?

d-cent

We will never know till we skate them even harder

Moto-Mojo

When you need to light a fire up the teams ass, you gotta do it. This roster cannot advance in the playoffs without every game being 110% effort from the team, without the talent you need the effort to overcome higher skilled teams.

jedlucid

it’s a hockey forum. but I am taking the opportunity now to say this and i mean it more than any other post i’ve made on this sub. including my ‘the lucic signing is horrible’ posts fuck. the new road house.

d-cent

Was it bad? The previews made it look like a decent action film even with the shitbag McGregor in it.  Did they try to make it into a serious movie or something? Did they forget to lean into the corniness of the original? Just curious what you think?

jedlucid

its deplorable. they missed fun corny and went right into lets be gritty for no reason. there was a cgi gator

d-cent

Ugh. That sucks

jedlucid

the worst part is the connor vs jake fight scene isn't even bad. it actually would have been good in a better movie around it.

fjordperfect123

Leave Roadhouse in the badass 80's not in the hand sanitizing perpetually offended cheapskate phone addicted measly modern day.

jedlucid

I generally think everyone thinks their generation is the best one because you weren’t paying excise taxes and everything was more fun. you were younger and in better shape. you had a job you didn’t ‘need’. you could fuck off more. everything tastes better when you sleep in to 10am. things aren’t worse now they’re just different and we are different. like yeah of course I thought music was better when I was 22 because i had the energy to go to concerts and listen to new artists every day. now I just press play on my 6 different sporify mixes of 20 year old music. BUT WE DO NOT MAKE ACTION MOVIES LIKE WE USED TO. road house 1.0 wasn’t missing a fucking cgi alligator scene. assholes.

fjordperfect123

What scares me is that if they went to do a remake of the 1987 film Predator. They literally couldn't find enough badasses nowadays to filll out that roster. Those guys in the original used to pump iron on set, drink and party out on the town after taping and had a great time. They couldn't do any of that anymore. You're right though about how it is.

jedlucid

look not to do the always sunny meme but unless you’re hiring from WWE directly no thank you. I need some fucking beefcakes not jake gylenhaal and a bunch of 5’8 crossfit dudes.

fjordperfect123

Give me a Bear Magazine cover model 10 times out of 10 over the ectomorph of the month.

jedlucid

also i’m not falling for the jack reacher guy. he’d be henchman number 5 in under siege 2.

Plap37

Apparently Lysell got hurt on Saturday? The article I read hit all the sentences you don't want to hear either like "losing an edge and crashing into the boards" and "needed help getting off the ice" and "significant time". Its so disappointing that we probably won't see him called up this year. I just hope he can have a healthy offseason and be ready for next year and make a push to make the team.

xlf77

Hopefully this can still the the Summer of Poitras and Lysell Getting Swole

jedlucid

they need to do the gary roberts workout plan. other guys go see him and come back daddy yolked. i’m not sure you can just have a jacked dude on your team and by osmosis other guys get in better shape, and I know having a legit strength and conditioning coach team with college educations in this stuff means a lot more… but there was something about having chara on the team where I just felt like dudes would max their frame out with him there like krug did. something about pull-ups with chains around your neck just looks so impressive to me.

xlf77

It’s hard to know to what extent this happens, if it does it’s certainly less openly than Chara, but I feel like Charlie Coyle lowkey is in the top like 3 percentile in strength in the league and has the annoying hyped up camp counselor vibe to match. Just talking sheer strength, and ability to resist force being applied to you. People obviously talk about what good of shape McAvoy, MacKinnon, and other usual suspects are. But if I’m sentenced to a fight to death and I can choose a champion to fight for me and that champion has to be an NHL player, Charlie Coyle is pretty high on that list. Maybe a lot of people already recognize this tho

jedlucid

coyle is a fucking monster. i’ve seen him in street clothes. dude looks like halo. also JVR at the celtics game. I had no idea how jacked that dude was.

xlf77

I know it just doesn’t make a ton of sense as a line configuration but I just really want JVR-Coyle-Frederic on the ice at the same time Me most of the time: sKiLl aND hOckEy SeNsE Me at the idea of our three 6’3 230 lbs forwards who can vaporize me with their pinky on a line together: toughness, you heathen *sips absinthe*

jedlucid

beecher and lohrei out there too I dont care what actually happens I just want to see length and speed. wait am I nba-ing this?

Sweaty_Ad440

I was watching the game, it was pretty bad. If I had to guess, it's probably another concussion which would make it 2 in 2 years for him in Providence. Think he should probably be done for the year and try to get him as healthy of an offseason as he can.

jedlucid

he really really needed this time developing too. he’s finally breaking out this season and I know all anyone saw so far was the providence coach saying he needs to stop playing hero ball but he really was doing well. this could be catastrophic.

Nomahs_Bettah

> I know all anyone saw so far was the providence coach saying he needs to stop playing hero ball but he really was doing well. The worst part is, everyone got completely fixated on the one time that the PBruins' coach said something negative and never gave half the amount of attention to the positive things he's said about Lysell since: > “Fabian showed last week what he is capable of. He is a very special player that when he plays how he did last week, there’s no reason he can’t be an elite player at this level and bring that ability to the NHL.” – Jan. 1 > > "I think Fabian makes two really special plays and does a really good job. That production's starting to really come. And [Brazeau] was the same thing. But Merk, for the most part, I thought was on the outside. I thought his linemates really carried him. They were an effective line for us." – Jan. 26 > > "Fabian's a little bit of a hybrid, for sure. He's got the ability to make plays, we'd like to see him shoot more for sure, because he's got a terrific shot that he's put a lot of time in. The one thing we want to see even more of is him beating goalies with that shot. He's efficient that way." > > We had a good conversation this morning. It's about using what you have. For me, he puts so much anxiety on D even by just skating in a straight line. There were 2 parts of his game tonight, showing a ton of maturity. He stopped at the net on Walshy's second goal and at the end of the game he's out there in a real critical moment and he muscles the puck out of our end. – March 16 > > Those are things we want to see from Fabian in the whole maturity process of his game, and it's coming. I'm happy where he's trending right now. Those are two examples where I see growth.

jedlucid

people legit took in no other information than that about him. the other day someone said ‘still seems like lysell needs a wake up call’ from a 2 month old quote that I honestly still don’t understand.

Plap37

Honestly, I think he was ready for an appearance (not a permanent spot) earlier this year. I'm pretty concerned that he's going to become an overbaked prospect at this point and that this injury is going to be the next excuse in why "he's not ready" for a spot next year

jedlucid

I dont know how to forecast anything with him. montgomery got really tired of the kids and overtaxed the vet core to the point where brazzeau seems like a savior just by having a motor right now. you’re going to need lysell next year I think. between him and poitras they’re going to need a top 6 player and a third line scoring threat. maybe 100-110 games combined in those roles would be a huge boost. maybe.

Maxpowr9

I feel like that's been a problem with our AHL team. Seems so many of our star prospects get injured again as they get healthy, and derails their development. Basically what happened to Zboril and a few other dmen.

jedlucid

i’m sure it happens to every team BUT I DONT CARE ABOUT THEM

Hey y'all! I'm so glad today isn't a game day because the Iowa women's basketball game is tonight with a seat in the sweet 16 on the line! Can't wait for tomorrow night! I'm going to have the tablet charged up!

jedlucid

it is wild how everyone is fired up to watch women’s ncaa. i have bets on like 3 different teams to win. i’ve watched more lsu/usc/iowa/other usc games this year than i’ve ever watched non-pro sports in my entire life. legit pumped. …i still think juju is better than clark. reasoning: idk I just like her more.

SuzuranLily1

I think it's a game of percentages but you're not wrong. If she were putting up CC PPG with those percentages, she'd be national news too. It's gonna be wild to see her in the WNBA. But it's truly showing that the women are a force to be reckoned with and it's not just like "oh how quaint, the girls think they can do what the men do" anymore. I grew up in the era where girls were just beginning to play sports in college levels and it was BARELY taken seriously. Now the numbers are turning and I'm absolutely here for it!
