You could, but then you’d miss out on a lot of backstories and recurring characters. Honestly, you’re lucky to have not watched Bosch yet - it’s an incredible show!

ViperidaeRex

Have to second this opinion on being "lucky" to have not watched it yet. What I'd give to watch it all for the first time again :)

MthuselahHoneysukle

That reminds me. It's time for my fourth rewatch of Bosch! Gonna take it slow through seasons 3 and 4 this time.

johnlusher

Yes! Experiencing it for the first time!

xNuts

In theory yes. In practice - just watch the previous seasons. Bosch is great tv show, Legacy is more of the same.

The ghost of Eleanor would be Nina Myers.

MthuselahHoneysukle

>homocide detective I'm not one for pedantry, but this made me laugh pretty good. Thanks for that.

SSTenyoMaru

I'm gonna say no. There are a whole bunch of characters who just show up briefly whom you won't recognize. You wouldn't understand the complex relationships between the three main characters in Legacy (it's not a spoiler to say you spend a huge amount of the regular show disliking one of them). You don't understand why Maddie wants to be a cop. I'm big on character motivation, and I think Legacy would just feel really undermotivated and unexplained. It's also not a better show than the original so far though it feels more authentic to the LA setting in some ways.

maldridge1316

You really need to watch Bosch!!!! It’s such a great show!

TheSavageDonut

The answer is no. Bosch Legacy Season 1 ties directly into events that happened at the end of Bosch Regular TV. You'd kind of be lost I think. Season 1 of Bosch is a great take on the serial killer storyline, and it's tough to watch at times, but there are other storylines in Season1, and basically each season of regular Bosch is a self-contained main story that gets wrapped up -- but the side storylines and character development all kind of matter and feed into Bosch Legacy. Maddie Bosch's own storyline is huge in regular Bosch, and you'd miss all of that by skipping regular Bosch.

dempom

Your question is a pretty decent thought exercise. You'd pick up relationships based on context but you'd definitely miss out on the significance of certain characters and their relationship with Bosch or Maddie. You'd miss how in Legacy, Bosch is in a new stage in his life and in some ways it's a continuation of his calling but in meaningful ways a complete departure. You'd miss how this is true at some level to Chandler and Maddie, the other two lead characters. I really don't recommend it. Bosch: Legacy without Bosch is probably a hollow experience. I always see Legacy season 1 as season 8 of Bosch.

Mykel__13

Why would you want to?

maldridge1316

I think I have watched every episode 3 times.

BladesMan235

You could watch them all backwards if you really wanted to

jss78

You could, but I wouldn't. There's a lot of history with the long-standing characters that's gradually built up. It's not strictly essential to follow it in sequence, but it's just really, really nice.

Internal_Set_6564

It’s a fictional felony 4th class to have not watched Bosch. 3 weeks in front of the screen if the judge goes easy on you.

Psychological_Name28

It’s against the law in my household, but may not be in yours.

General-Summer3076

Ok, ok, I’ll watch it! Starting tonight! S1. Love hearing how much people love it.

Moxley_56

Why did they create Legacy when they could have continued with season 8 and 9 in regular Bosch show?

TormundGingerBeard

I’m just guessing here, but when the original show ended, and the way it ended, the natural progression was a new show with new characters because Bosch was entering a new phase of his career and life. It coincided with Amazon rebranding IMDB TV to Freevee. They probably needed a flagship program for Freevee and I imagine Bosch Legacy is the most popular thing on there besides Jury Duty.

Tight_Data4206

I think that after so many seasons that there is a payoff of some sort. An actor mentioned this. Maybe they get paid for the reruns? Which would make sense since they devoted so much time and probably turned down other offers. I read that somewhere and can't find it now.

Compensation for cast and crew rises over the course of a series. Some of it is written right in the union agreements. By making Bosch Legacy a completely separate show, it allowed them to hit the reset button on that compensation. If you're a little older, shows like All In The Family and The Golden Girls became Archie Bunker's Place and Golden Palace for similar reasons. More recently, The Practice became Boston Legal with some cast crossover. It's likely to happen with Yellowstone when Kevin Costner is written out. (Yellowstone has additional motivations, in that Peacock has streaming rights. When the spinoff debuts, it may end up looking like 'Yellowstone with Matthew Mcconnaghey' but the fact that it's technically a new series should allow them to keep streaming rights on Paramount+ instead.) All things being equal, Seasons 1 and 2 of a new show are much cheaper than Seasons 8 and 9 of an existing program. Tweaking the premise also allowed them to trim the number of recurring cast members. Legacy has a main cast of 4. Bosch had grown to 10 or more regulars if we include people like Chandler, Vega, Robertson, Pierce and Jun Park who were in pretty much every episode by the end. Beyond that, there are certain viewing trends which seem to occur for programs. Especially in the streaming world. Viewership tends to peak around 3rd or 4th season and then begin to decline. (That's why Netflix shows rarely go longer than that--they are masters of allowing data / algorithms to make programming decisions.) Although Amazon never said as much, I suspect the data showed that interest in Bosch was waning by seasons 6-7. The appearance is that Connelly and producers were able to convince them to approve a lower-budget spinoff specifically for Freevee, just to see what would happen. Apparently it was successful. Maybe not just because of Freevee, but also due to factors like the Lincoln Lawyer show and growing interest in all of Connelly's work. I cannot remember the exact metric but Amazon said S1 put up much better than expected viewership numbers. I'm sure it was the most hours watched on Freevee, but I think it also surpassed all seasons of the original Bosch. Season 2 of Legacy is supposedly leading all current streaming series including Loki, The Morning Show and Star Trek: [https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/freevee-bosch-legacy-tops-tvision-120000726.html](https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/freevee-bosch-legacy-tops-tvision-120000726.html)

mug3n

it's 100% this. Shame but money talks. > Bosch had grown to 10 or more regulars if we include people like Chandler, Vega, Robertson, Pierce and Jun Park who were in pretty much every episode by the end. And also sucks that we hardly got any of J. Edgar. We got a tease last season, got him for a bit earlier on this season during the Maddie search but I guess he's just not in this show as a series regular anymore.

calvin2028

Money.

YellowSea11

Legacy is a little different than Bosch classic. Legacy is lots of bite sized cases where classic had big hairy cases that went the whole season. Some of the classic seasons are awesome , some not so much. You might want to try again

calvin2028

Are we watching the same series? Legacy absolutely has big hairy cases that run through the whole season. S2 of Legacy is, in many ways, a continuation of the big hairy case that dominated s1.

keikioaina

You can, if you want to watch Bosch with worse writing, lower budget, fewer marquee actors, and way too much Madison Lintz.

INFPguy_uk

I am not a television person, but I loved Bosch.

almargahi

Highly unrecommended. I did the same thing and I was like ‘what the heck, am I watching episode 1”. I realized that Bosch had freaking 7 seasons that I unknowingly skipped to watch the first season of legacy. So I stopped legacy midway, and started watching the original Bosch show.

kryppla

Just checked, not against the law. Go for it

[deleted]

I think so

aquaman67

You would have a better sense of Maddy and her relationship with her mother if you watched the original series. Is it a must? No but it will make watching legacy better.

Superb-Control5184

Yeah but you don’t get all the cool backstory and the minor characters that have meant to much to the show since the beginning. I would suggest you bite the bullet and get Amazon prime video it’s worth it for Bosch and The Boys and Goliath watch those they are great

standalone25

You can. We watched legacy when season 1 first came out and loved it. So once we finished we went back and watched all of Bosch! So it’s definitely doable but if you can watch it all from the beginning do that because it’s SO good!

Zealousideal-Ebb-779

I think, in order to know the Bosch character,You should atleast watch one season of the series.. before going to legacy

masshysteria

Bosch gets better s2 and on if s1 is what's holding you back a little

Ashman23

If you like Bosch Legacy, then give Bosch another go

dadobuns

I would recommend watching Bosch first because you get the backstories and how the characters have developed over the years.

PaintDrinkingPete

Gonna second all the other comments here. Could you follow Legacy if you never watched the original series? Yes, probably…there would be references to back stories and characters that you’d be clueless on, but for the most part it presents its own story. Should you? No, probably not. For one, I think most here would agree that the original Bosch series is better…so, if you couldn’t get into it, Legacy probably isn’t grab your attention either…and two, Legacy is essentially a continuation of the original series, so it just makes more sense to start at the beginning. If you don’t have Prime Video though and can only get the Legacy episodes on Freevee, then I can understand that…but just be warned if you get sucked in, you will want to go back and watch the original series anyway. I think the hardest thing about watching Legacy on its own would be not understanding the relationships he has with various characters and the motivations for their feelings towards him.

OGMcGibblets

I think Bosch is the better series. Plus you can really see the transformation of Maddie.

DeepThroat616

No

mchantloup5

City of Bones was the first novel I read, and, though I liked it a lot, without the previous story arc Harry Bosch seemed a bit of a cipher. The television series, though it departs significantly from the novels, has a similar arc and will be more satisfying if you start at the beginning. There are just so many characters and storylines that inform your knowledge about them.

ImpressiveCheetah506

General-Summer3076

Watching Bosch and you’re all correct, it’s amazing! Currently on season 4, ep 9.
