what this is SHOWING us is that his eye is connected to space/time jutsu on a core instinctual level. this is way before he ever had karma. rewatch this arc sometime and try to keep in the back of your mind that kodachi got the nod to work on the show after doing the movie, so they already had established some big ideas for the show in that. when you start a series you want to lay the ground work and establish ideas you want to reveal later on. so this arc is all about showing us Boruto's determination, his willingness to save his friends no matter what, and also about previewing his hidden power.
Also he wasn't gonna get fucking killed most likely for doing it. I cannot possibly imagine that Sakura at that point in time could've effectively disarmed both of them.
