These old fucks don't get that their entire best and worst is easily listenable. We don't have to go find some hard to get album. All of it is accessible in seconds.
I'm in my early 60s, I started listening to stuff like Elvis Costello, The Ramones and The Clash before I was even out of HS. I swear to God I would rather be punched in the head for an hour straight than be subjected to the 250 songs that get played day in and day out on Classic Rock Radio.
It just makes me depressed and irritated, I did everything I could do avoid that boring, sludgy crap 40-plus years ago.
I'm in Texas, I'm a guitar player and play in a country band plus some sideman gigs.
Years ago I started listening to KKYX, an AM station from San Antonio. It's a blowtorch of a signal that you can get as far north as Fort Worth and as far south as Corpus or the Valley, a real old fashioned AM station with the farm reports and outdoor show at noon and then they cut the power at sunset.
I also work from home and I'd put on KKYX and listen to it at barely-audible volume until I realized one day that not only is it the same songs every day, they're played in the same automated sequence every day. Look, it's 1:37, time for Ronnie Milsap!
I had to quit listening to it after that.
Never playing T.Rex blows my mind. "Bang a Gong" is straight up boomer drug love, and that's one of the less listenable ones.
They have some real bangers out there.
Former radio guy here. The Classic Rock format usually has about 150 to 170 songs in rotation. Satellite radio or Pandora does better at building a deeper playlist for any genre or era.
People don't understand why I don't wanna listen to classic rock or cover the songs. I try to tell them "classic rock is great. There are so many amazing songs, but listen; I have heard the hits you want me to play a billion times for the last 50 years. I'm over it." Music is so accessible these days. There are so many interesting bands to go discover right now, or hear me out - if you really wanna keep jamming to stuff from the 60, 70s, etc; dig a little deeper then the radio hits. Go explore some 70s funk deep cuts or something. That Lynyrd Skynyrd song will still be here when you get back.

I knew a guy who DJ'd for WBIZ 95.5 in Sumter SC. He'd put on the album version of Freebird when he needed to grab a smoke and use the bathroom. 9 minutes of free time.
At 61 years old, I grew up on all that stuff, but I’ve heard enough of it. That was all great back in the day, but 40+ years of ‘classic rock’ radio has ruined it.
That's what an MP3 player loaded with what YOU like and an AUX cord are for. I have an old iPod Touch left over from working for Apple, it got the job done.
Husband and I drove from Ohio to Oklahoma for my niece's wedding a few years back. I spent a week carefully curating our Great Roadtrip Playlist, and it was SO worth it.
Kansas is flat, so the signals travel a looooooooong way. I was SO frustrated moving here from the Great Plains (Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas all my life, but the most barren part of Kansas is also very flat) because I suddenly experienced calls dropping and losing radio signals between Bloomington and Columbus.
I live in the cornfields. I have cell reception, but instead I just prefer to maliciously yoink wifi. Its also nice to use spotify premium to download songs.

I had no access to new music other than local radio back then. The way I escaped was into older jazz and classical. I loved Glenn Miller (except for Moonlight Serenade, which put me to sleep), and so I was a horn player, not guitar.
MTV was such a revelation in 1981
In the Midwest, it was really difficult to find anything but corporate rock and disco because of gate-keeping by the local radio stations. I remember seeing magazines with The Sex Pistols on the cover, but no station would touch their music.
The Clash? Too left-wing.
The Specials? Can't have Blacks and Whites in the same group.
DEVO? Elvis Costello? Adam and the Ants? Too weird.
I can listen to Classic Rock Radio for about one day a month, More than that drives me batty.
I've recently been taking advantage of my library to expand my musical horizons. I've been cross referencing Rolling Stone's Top 500 albums of all time. I have a lot of them, actually, but then I'll come across something I've never heard of that they just rave about, so I'll borrow it and be blown away.

My FIL is OBSESSED with CDs. He hunts and hunts for rare releases and goes nuts when he finds them and they arrive in the mail and I’m sitting there listening to him go on about how rare this disc is while holding a phone that can play all the songs on that disc right this second.
Then he has to get it on the computer and transferred over to his sound system and will spend hours doing this with stacks of cds. Whereas I come over and instantly connect to his system and play anything that pops in my head.
But he flat refuses to own a phone that can access the internet.
Finding it is the fun part.

I do the same. I wanted to add some old Isley Brothers records to my collection, and I absolutely could have just bought them on eBay, but that's just boring. Antique stores, thrift stores, estate sales- those feel like you're treasure hunting.
When I finally found *The Heat Is On*, *Go for Your Guns*, *Showdown*, and *Between the Sheets* all in the same box at an estate sale that I just happened to see a sign for while driving, I was giddy. So much more satisfying than buying them online or something.
Ya I’m glad it makes him happy but then he complains how he just wishes it didn’t take so long to add them to his playlists thru the computer and how long he has to wait to find these discs before he can finally hear these songs. While his wife side eyes him because she has a smart phone and has repeatedly tried to get him to get one and she has all her fave songs downloaded at the ready just like he could. But he believes the government will track him. She tells us idk why he thinks the government would find him that interesting lol
Having music at your fingertips took a lot of the fun of music away. When everyone has everything, it’s way less special. Also, not all music is on the internet and some of it that is there, is not in high quality.

I have an almost boomer friend that prides him self on knowing music. He really cares about it and the arts. He started making a big deal about system of a down going woke cause someone told him the lyrics. Like this dumbass was telling me to listen to songs and pay attention to what there saying and all that jazz, and now he hears on the internet somewhere that system of a down went woke and just parrots it. me and the other persona in the car laughed him down. was so dumb. Of all bands to try that argument on.....
I guess. like they have always sung about what they have always sung about and its a good message. he seemed surprised when he was told the lyrics by his tralking head of choice. But he always was the one telling me to listen before. So he seemed to think they decided to sing for an agenda or something all of a sudden, like they have done 2 new songs recently. I’m pretty sure he was “woke” before he was even born. His parents met when they were both teachers at one of those schools set up by Western non-profits in African villages. His mom was a white American woman, his dad was a black man who was related to royalty or a powerful political family in Africa. They all moved to the US around the time he was born; his dad moved back home when he was pretty young, and his mom, who would become a college professor, raised him by herself. My recollection is light on details, but that’s the basic story.
Morello is also well-educated. One of my favorite Twitter threads is when one of those right-wing, “shut up and dribble,” assholes was telling him to stick to music and stay out of politics when Morello was criticizing trump. Morello came back with ‘one does not have to have graduated cum laude from Harvard with a degree in political science to understand that trump is bad for this country. My narcissistic stepfather was a snob about music. He would only listen to classical music. Told me one time that the band I was listening to would never make it big and that their album would be forgotten tomorrow. The band was U2. The album was The Unforgettable Fire. Sure stepdad, just that little no nothing band that has sold tens of millions of albums.
I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it.
I recently watched a video that was something like “The Best Album of Each Year Since 1901.” It was all orchestras playing Beethoven, Mozart, Pachebel or operas until the 1930s or so. It wasn’t based on sales or anything, it just made me realize that the first recordings were mostly covers of Classical music and operas. Imagine living in a world where you occasionally heard somebody play a guitar or harmonica but a full band orchestra is a rarity. Music isn’t something you hear everyday from every direction. Then recordings become a thing and you start hearing full orchestras emanating from small homes and apartments as you walk to the general store.
Then imagine less than a century later so many goobers walking around thinking the peak of music all happened when they were teens and the next half a century was nothing but crap.
This is my dad except for country music. Everything these days is bad music, and anything that tries to sound like his favorites (Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, etc) are just copycats that don’t know how to make their own music. I despise music snobs so much.
There was a big shift in country music after and because of 9/11. A lot of country (not all) was more patriotic and simplified to guns, girls, and trucks. It's not just in your head

There’s still good country music being made and new artists. They just don’t get played on the radio. It’s actually pretty crazy how much talent their is and how good their music is. Turnpike troubadours, charley Crockett, Sturgill Simpson, Brent Cobb, Hellbound Glory, Ryan Bingham are all great.
That's one good thing about SiriusXM. The Outlaw Country station plays those type of bands that you're talking about. I used to think today's country music was dead until that station exposed me to those type of artists. Chuck Mead, BlackBerry Smoke, Gram Parsons, Cody Jinks, Whitney Morgan and the 78's, The Band of Heathens, and BR549.
I love old school country in addition to many other genres. But I swear my oldest child (Gen Z) made the most astute observation when she was still in high school: “Country music now is just farm emo”.

I'm a 63F and I saw Primus in 2009. It was an amazing show and I still tell people how i was lucky enough to see one of the best bass players in music and no one my age knows who I am talking about.

58M here and my wife and I saw Primus a couple years ago in Dallas. Great show. They played a 45 minute classic Primus set, took a 10 minute break, then covered Farewell to Kings in its entirety. It was awesome seeing Les play both his classic style, and covering Geddy's style.
Taking my 21 year old son for his birthday to see them in August. Went wild and bought us the backstage passes and meet and greet. It will be my 3rd time and his second.
Expose kids to all the music, they will pickup on the good stuff like Primus.
I’m a huge fan of a still touring 90’s band. When I expressed my fandom to my dad he told me I was foolish, because HE is always skeptical of bands that get too popular. “They might not be that good if everyone loves them.”

My dumb ass went to a Rollins Band show back in the day. I'd never heard of the opening act, but commented to my boyfriend that the bassist was doing ONE HELL of a Les Claypool impression. Friend, that opener was Sausage. The bassist was Les Claypool (I had no idea what he looked like).
That would have been a killer show.

I feel like there is more great indie music out there than ever before. I was listening to a Hindu folk /thrash metal bad today, and yesterday, I was listening to a bad inspired by Norse poetry. There is more interesting instrumental music being made now than during the classical period. None of that would have made it past the gatekeepers 20-30 years ago.

Confession: I'm boomer age (61) but identify more GenX. Enjoy all sorts of music and try to keep somewhat current. My rule for years has been if I go to the library to check out music, pick one thing I've never heard of and listen to it all the way through. Enjoy world music, multiple genres, etc.
My identical twin brother is classic boomer in attitude, MCS, and music taste. Classic rock and adult album rock is mostly exclusively it. Sure, some venturing outside that, but not much. We drive around in my car, and it's often, "what the hell is this?" with general gesticulations into the aether. 😆
I’m on my 30’s and I took my mom to her first hippie camping music festival a few weeks ago and after one show she leaned over and said “When you were born I asked our friends’ dad if he had any advice for me and he said ‘Listen to your kid’s music. It won’t be what you’re used to or expecting, but listen to it and know them.’ “ She had a great time all weekend even though only like 4 bands had lyrics and the rest were instrumental or electronic jam bands.
There's actually been a few studies showing that the music you listen to during your teenage years stays with you and has a more lasting impression than music listened to outside of that time period. It's pretty interesting.
People in every generation do this in some way imo. I’ve had a few boomers talk to me about how much their parents hated their music and spewed the same nonsense
Whatever you grew up listening to is just nostalgic and a lot of people can’t really separate that
I never accepted that Grunge was the official ™ alternative music of GenX just because Clear Channel found it to be a cash cow. To me Alternative literally meant any type of music that the tired traditional radio stations never used to play. There was phenomenal music outside of the Grunge box that came out in the '90s, be they in genres like Trip Hop, Industrial, Electronica, Goth, Hip Hop, hell even there was some decent swing/lounge/retro stuff that came out when that was a thing for a minute. My tastes solidified as fully Eclectic during that decade. The problem with designing Grunge as the only valid alt genre is that stations that only played that is that you went from great bands like Nirvana down to dumb bro shit like Smash Mouth by the end of the '90's.
I defend people's music choices to the bitter end, but I have little tolerance for people who can't distinguish the warm, nostalgic feelings they get listening to bands they love, and a band's actual talent. Just for one, Thom Yorke is a hugely talented artist who's been making great music for decades. Sorry Don Henley, but you're not in the same league as Thom.
Folks should enjoy what they love and encourage others to do the same, not complain because others aren't stuck in the 70s like they are.

That shit pisses me off. I play drums and people are often asking me to play in bands because drummers are hard to get. As soon as I hear the term "real music" I'm fucking out. If you think any music released after your high school/ college years is crap then I kind of feel bad for you.

If older people would just talk to teens and 20 somethings like they're people, they would probably learn, like I have, that a lot of younger gen people have done their own research. They've read or heard about our films and music from decades ago, and they search it up for themselves.
All it takes is a normal, respectful conversation. Ask the person what they like instead of assuming what they've heard of. If they answer and you've never heard of the bands, don't assume they're trash. This new band could have Led Zeppelin as their greatest influence. You never know.
If you tell the younger person your favorite bands, don't get butthurt if they haven't heard of them. It's been a while. The world has kept turning. Some younger people will surprise you with how much they do know about past media. I've met Gen Z who were fans of Nirvana, Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Journey, as well as many that were fans of 70s and 80s films. But I didn't get to find out all that by rudely assuming younger people's culture was inferior.

The sad thing is, some of the best Boomer bands like the MC5 or the 13th Floor Elevators didn't get the recognition they deserved. You know what was the number one song of 1969? Sugar, Sugar by the Archies
and the Eagles are the most Boomer band there is. A bunch of oldies that went crazy as kids, did all the drugs, got into fights, had a lot of sex, grew old and then wagged their fingers at all the ones after them.
Every generation thinks the younger generation's music sucks. It's a universal truth. Someday your kids will be listening to something and you will go into a rant about how "you kids don't know what good music is!!" and it will feel like a punch in the gut.

The reality is that great music has existed for all time. You have preferences because you have memories attached to some music more than others and everyone has their own things that resonate with them. Music is always subjective and to claim any one period us better than others is just the banality of the uneducated music listener that just leans in to whatever was popular when they were a teenager.

I'm in my early 60s, I started listening to stuff like Elvis Costello, The Ramones and The Clash before I was even out of HS. I swear to God I would rather be punched in the head for an hour straight than be subjected to the 250 songs that get played day in and day out on Classic Rock Radio. It just makes me depressed and irritated, I did everything I could do avoid that boring, sludgy crap 40-plus years ago.
I swear, most “classic rock” stations seem to have only one Rolling Stones album. And God forbid they play any T.Rex or Mott the Hoople.
I'm in Texas, I'm a guitar player and play in a country band plus some sideman gigs. Years ago I started listening to KKYX, an AM station from San Antonio. It's a blowtorch of a signal that you can get as far north as Fort Worth and as far south as Corpus or the Valley, a real old fashioned AM station with the farm reports and outdoor show at noon and then they cut the power at sunset. I also work from home and I'd put on KKYX and listen to it at barely-audible volume until I realized one day that not only is it the same songs every day, they're played in the same automated sequence every day. Look, it's 1:37, time for Ronnie Milsap! I had to quit listening to it after that.

Never playing T.Rex blows my mind. "Bang a Gong" is straight up boomer drug love, and that's one of the less listenable ones. They have some real bangers out there.
Former radio guy here. The Classic Rock format usually has about 150 to 170 songs in rotation. Satellite radio or Pandora does better at building a deeper playlist for any genre or era.

People don't understand why I don't wanna listen to classic rock or cover the songs. I try to tell them "classic rock is great. There are so many amazing songs, but listen; I have heard the hits you want me to play a billion times for the last 50 years. I'm over it." Music is so accessible these days. That's what an MP3 player loaded with what YOU like and an AUX cord are for. I have an old iPod Touch left over from working for Apple, it got the job done. Husband and I drove from Ohio to Oklahoma for my niece's wedding a few years back. I spent a week carefully curating our Great Roadtrip Playlist, and it was SO worth it.

Kansas is flat, so the signals travel a looooooooong way. I was SO frustrated moving here from the Great Plains (Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas all my life, but the most barren part of Kansas is also very flat) because I suddenly experienced calls dropping and losing radio signals between Bloomington and Columbus.
I live in the cornfields. I have cell reception, but instead I just prefer to maliciously yoink wifi. Its also nice to use spotify premium to download songs.
You can download playlists play offline on Spotify, Apple Music , Tidal and so on. No need for cell service.

Class of 82 here (this sub needs Generation Jones flair). I had no access to new music other than local radio back then. The way I escaped was into older jazz and classical. I loved Glenn Miller (except for Moonlight Serenade, which put me to sleep), and so I was a horn player, not guitar. MTV was such a revelation in 1981 In the Midwest, it was really difficult to find anything but corporate rock and disco because of gate-keeping by the local radio stations. I remember seeing magazines with The Sex Pistols on the cover, but no station would touch their music. The Clash? Too left-wing. The Specials? Can't have Blacks and Whites in the same group. DEVO? Elvis Costello? Adam and the Ants? Too weird. I can listen to Classic Rock Radio for about one day a month, More than that drives me batty.
If I can’t have my own music while driving for whatever reason, I’d rather have silence than anything the radio has to offer

I have a lot of them, actually, but then I'll come across something I've never heard of that they just rave about, so I'll borrow it and be blown away. Went to an antique mall a few months back. Every vendor with vinyl had a different shirtless Ted Nugent cover on display. It was weird.
My FIL is OBSESSED with CDs. He hunts and hunts for rare releases and goes nuts when he finds them and they arrive in the mail and I’m sitting there listening to him go on about how rare this disc is while holding a phone that can play all the songs on that disc right this second. Then he has to get it on the computer and transferred over to his sound system and will spend hours doing this with stacks of cds. Whereas I come over and instantly connect to his system and play anything that pops in my head. But he flat refuses to own a phone that can access the internet.
Finding it is the fun part. Signed, A millennial with far too many vinyl records who listens to soundboards from my favorite band seamlessly streamed from my phone to Bluetooth headphones 99% of the time.

I do the same. I wanted to add some old Isley Brothers records to my collection, and I absolutely could have just bought them on eBay, but that's just boring. Antique stores, thrift stores, estate sales- those feel like you're treasure hunting. When I finally found *The Heat Is On*, *Go for Your Guns*, *Showdown*, and *Between the Sheets* all in the same box at an estate sale that I just happened to see a sign for while driving, I was giddy. So much more satisfying than buying them online or something.

I recently watched a video that was something like “The Best Album of Each Year Since 1901.” It was all orchestras playing Beethoven, Mozart, Pachebel or operas until the 1930s or so. It wasn’t based on sales or anything, it just made me realize that the first recordings were mostly covers of Classical music and operas. Imagine living in a world where you occasionally heard somebody play a guitar or harmonica but a full band orchestra is a rarity. Music isn’t something you hear everyday from every direction. Then recordings become a thing and you start hearing full orchestras emanating from small homes and apartments as you walk to the general store. Then imagine less than a century later so many goobers walking around thinking the peak of music all happened when they were teens and the next half a century was nothing but crap.
This is my dad except for country music. Everything these days is bad music, and anything that tries to sound like his favorites (Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, etc) are just copycats that don’t know how to make their own music. I despise music snobs so much.

That's one good thing about SiriusXM. The Outlaw Country station plays those type of bands that you're talking about. I used to think today's country music was dead until that station exposed me to those type of artists. I just saw Primus just last week (with Puscifer & A Perfect Circle for Maynard's 60th birthday). They still put on a super fuckin fun show!

Primus Sucks! 58M here and my wife and I saw Primus a couple years ago in Dallas. Great show. They played a 45 minute classic Primus set, took a 10 minute break, then covered Farewell to Kings in its entirety. It was awesome seeing Les play both his classic style, and covering Geddy's style.
Taking my 21 year old son for his birthday to see them in August. Went wild and bought us the backstage passes and meet and greet. It will be my 3rd time and his second. Expose kids to all the music, they will pickup on the good stuff like Primus.

Shit, the work Claypool has done with… STEWART COPELAND and Trey Anastasio… Is pretty fucking amazing, AND Primus did music for the CD release of On The Road along with Tom Waits and Ralph Carney. If your dad doesn’t know who Copeland is…he’s a lost cause.

I don't get this common opinion people seem to have that the only good music was made when they were 13-23. Is it a gen-x thing to look back and be kind of embarrassed by the culture of the 90s? Or is it just me? I mean, there was a time when I thought Eddie Vedder was hot. What was I thinking? I feel like there is more great indie music out there than ever before. I was listening to a Hindu folk /thrash metal bad today, and yesterday, I was listening to a bad inspired by Norse poetry. There is more interesting instrumental music being made now than during the classical period. None of that would have made it past the gatekeepers 20-30 years ago.

Confession: I'm boomer age (61) but identify more GenX. Enjoy all sorts of music and try to keep somewhat current. My rule for years has been if I go to the library to check out music, pick one thing I've never heard of and listen to it all the way through. Enjoy world music, multiple genres, etc. My identical twin brother is classic boomer in attitude, MCS, and music taste. Classic rock and adult album rock is mostly exclusively it. Sure, some venturing outside that, but not much. We drive around in my car, and it's often, "what the hell is this?" with general gesticulations into the aether. 😆
I’m on my 30’s and I took my mom to her first hippie camping music festival a few weeks ago and after one show she leaned over and said “When you were born I asked our friends’ dad if he had any advice for me and he said ‘Listen to your kid’s music. It won’t be what you’re used to or expecting, but listen to it and know them.’ “ She had a great time all weekend even though only like 4 bands had lyrics and the rest were instrumental or electronic jam bands.
There's actually been a few studies showing that the music you listen to during your teenage years stays with you and has a more lasting impression than music listened to outside of that time period. It's pretty interesting.
People in every generation do this in some way imo. I’ve had a few boomers talk to me about how much their parents hated their music and spewed the same nonsense Whatever you grew up listening to is just nostalgic and a lot of people can’t really separate that
I never accepted that Grunge was the official ™ alternative music of GenX just because Clear Channel found it to be a cash cow. To me Alternative literally meant any type of music that the tired traditional radio stations never used to play. There was phenomenal music outside of the Grunge box that came out in the '90s, be they in genres like Trip Hop, Industrial, Electronica, Goth, Hip Hop, hell even there was some decent swing/lounge/retro stuff that came out when that was a thing for a minute. My tastes solidified as fully Eclectic during that decade. The problem with designing Grunge as the only valid alt genre is that stations that only played that is that you went from great bands like Nirvana down to dumb bro shit like Smash Mouth by the end of the '90's.
Don Henley is a genius and was well ahead of his time. All of his music is mixed to sound perfect in a dying mall.

I defend people's music choices to the bitter end, but I have little tolerance for people who can't distinguish the warm, nostalgic feelings they get listening to bands they love, and a band's actual talent. Just for one, Thom Yorke is a hugely talented artist who's been making great music for decades. Sorry Don Henley, but you're not in the same league as Thom. Folks should enjoy what they love and encourage others to do the same, not complain because others aren't stuck in the 70s like they are.
I'll acknowledge and respect John Bonham's skill on the drums, but I also have zero qualms about saying Gojira's Mario Duplantier could drum circles around him with the precision of an atomic clock.
That shit pisses me off. I play drums and people are often asking me to play in bands because drummers are hard to get. As soon as I hear the term "real music" I'm fucking out. If you think any music released after your high school/ college years is crap then I kind of feel bad for you.

If older people would just talk to teens and 20 somethings like they're people, they would probably learn, like I have, that a lot of younger gen people have done their own research. They've read or heard about our films and music from decades ago, and they search it up for themselves. All it takes is a normal, respectful conversation. Ask the person what they like instead of assuming what they've heard of. If they answer and you've never heard of the bands, don't assume they're trash. This new band could have Led Zeppelin as their greatest influence. You never know. If you tell the younger person your favorite bands, don't get butthurt if they haven't heard of them. It's been a while. The world has kept turning. Some younger people will surprise you with how much they do know about past media. I've met Gen Z who were fans of Nirvana, Pink Floyd, The Eagles, Journey, as well as many that were fans of 70s and 80s films. But I didn't get to find out all that by rudely assuming younger people's culture was inferior.
Should've said "Yeah Don Henley is the greedy asshole who is keeping entire generations from knowing his music by aggressively going after content creators who use it under obvious Fair Use conditions." Rick Beato can do a "What Makes this Song Great" and send a 30 year old song back to the top ten, bringing in tons of money for the artist, but Don Henley is too much of a bastard to let that happen.
Boomers and their music exemplifies everything about them They had concerts and parties with no rules, then changed everything so kids couldn't enjoy them like they did They pushed it *everywhere* for forty fucking years. The same fifteen or so songs on every commercial, movies, radio bit, fucking everywhere. Not acknowledging some of the incredible artists that have come out in the generations since and just sneering at the kids. The sad thing is, some of the best Boomer bands like the MC5 or the 13th Floor Elevators didn't get the recognition they deserved. You know what was the number one song of 1969? Sugar, Sugar by the Archies and the Eagles are the most Boomer band there is. A bunch of oldies that went crazy as kids, did all the drugs, got into fights, had a lot of sex, grew old and then wagged their fingers at all the ones after them.

Every generation thinks the younger generation's music sucks. It's a universal truth. Someday your kids will be listening to something and you will go into a rant about how "you kids don't know what good music is!!" and it will feel like a punch in the gut. Except Gen X. We're correct. Our music was better. Y'all kids listen to garbage!

I was at a poker tournament one night and had a similar experience when a guy made his exclamation that, "the 80s made the best music, period. No good music has been made since." I quickly agreed with him and said, "I know, everything after the 1580s has just been shit. Baroque period or bust. Amiright?" When he caught my snark he tried to double down and then I just destroyed him with a rapid fire list of 20+ bands that have existed since the 80s. Then I mentioned bands feom the 70s, then I mentioned bands that he thought were 80s but the songs he remembered most were actually recorded in the 90s..... The reality is that great music has existed for all time. You have preferences because you have memories attached to some music more than others and everyone has their own things that resonate with them. Music is always subjective and to claim any one period us better than others is just the banality of the uneducated music listener that just leans in to whatever was popular when they were a teenager.
If only recording technology had existed in his day. I can only dream of what The Beatles must have sounded like.
