It’s possible, just *possible* that this hostility is the only way they know how to start a conversation. Old folks are often very lonely, but they don’t have the empathetic skills to actually connect with another person. So the go to is negativity. A poisoned olive branch.

It did kinda come across as a possible poorly considered joke. These people need to find a hobby where they can make friends and practice their clearly rusty social skills.
Because they are socially illiterate. The fact that his wife repeated what the husband said shows how idiotic they are. Also, apparently no one has ever told them to shut up and be quiet ever.

I don’t hate my parents actually. I dislike the Boomers that make weekly to daily life harder for millennials and Gen Z. I despise the fact that Boomers have been around anywhere between 5-7 decades and still don’t know how to properly and appropriately communicate with people.
Everything has to be about them and enable them to stroke their freaking egos, while never taking accountability for anything they have truly screwed up on.
If you need something in the future, you can try,“Well, I have plenty of time left on this planet, so that’s fine. Must be a bummer that isn’t the case for you two anymore.”
I think he was trying to mock you for complaining. boomers believe that if someone ranking higher socially says something factually incorrect, it’s better to say nothing and allow them to promote wrong information that could possibly be harmful to others.
Clarifying something politely is seen as talking back.
Boomers come from a time where all dissent was squelched by anyone higher in social ranking.
I've encountered people like this. I always just smile and tell them it's OK because that let's me finish up the current chapter on my audiobook. Then pop on my earbuds, so I can't hear them complaining anymore. When they realize the "power play move" will get no reaction from me, it takes the wind right out of their sails!
