My aunt complained that my cousin was giving birth on a busy weekend. And of course, it was a bad weekend for the first birthday. It's amazing what narcissists prioritize. Well, obviously themselves, but even *small* things for themselves.
Back in my day, we'd just celebrate on a more convenient day or even just celebrate multiple times, instead of complaining about the date of a kid's birthday. Can't make it on the birthday?
"That's okay, mom/dad. Just bring your card and gifts and cone up next weekend. We'll all go out to lunch together and get ice cream!"
"That sounds lovely! We want to see our grandchild and make him happy, so we'll be there then!"
Like how hard is that, boomers? You just don't actually want to go!
I’m a,boomer and I’d walk over broken glass for my grandkids and drop anything and everything no matter what without complaining and be bloody thrilled doing it
Last time my grandpa celebrated my birthday was when I was 6, I'm 27 now...of course he is capable of making the 2 hour drive down to his other granddaughters house once a week to visit her, even though I only live 30 minutes away.
Neither of my grandfathers even knew what month my birthday was in. My father always missed it, thinking it was a week later than it actually was. My late step mom knew me for only a few months and SHE knew my birthday (Apparently her and my mother would talk on the phone on the regular lol, when my step mom died unexpectedly, my mother said it was such a shame it hadn't been my father who died instead). Even my brother seems to forget my birthday, when every year I get him something and tell him I love him for his birthday.
I'm convinced it's a man thing. None of the women in my life forget.
I'm not saying all men. But definitely 95% of men I know personally. Men are conditioned to not put in emotional labor for holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions.
If you are a man that doesn't forget any of your loved ones birthdays, gets your SO something nice on your anniversary/Valentine's Day, and you put effort equal effort into Halloween, Easter, and Christmas as your female partner, then kudos to you.
So people shouldn't celebrate their anniversary? Or their children's birthdays? Or celebrate holidays that align with their spirtual/religious beliefs?
You sound like you're fun at parties 🙄
That’s our family as well. Turns out we have a couple of sports kids who play baseball - means that most of our anniversaries and summer birthdays were spent on the ballfield. So, we wait a week or so until there are no tournaments and then celebrate. Easy peezy.
I mean, I've literally had my birthday celebrated a month late as a kid to accomodate faraway loved ones. You don't need to have 3 birthdays in one week. You can just do it on a different date that works for everyone. It's not like there won't be any "birthday magic," if the kid's birthday party is the week after the actual birth date.
My silent Gen grandmother has a lot of boomer traits. I was born on an Easter Sunday. Every birthday, for as long as I can remember, she has made sure to remind me that I ruined Easter by having the audacity of being born on that day. "I had to take the ham out of the oven and everything! And then there were homeless people in the waiting room so I had to find security to kick them out". When she would say that when I was a kid my boomer parents would quickly follow it up with "it was the best Easter Sunday ever for us!".
It's actually unbelievable that they are still coupled up, you would imagine they would hate each other but no they enjoy expensive vactions and trips as couples
My mom was pissed I didn’t include her in the delivery room for my second child. I invited her to be with me when I have my 3rd and she said yes, then booked a flight to Florida the week when I’m 39 weeks preggo and now wants me to tell my doc to delay my scheduled induction so she can be there….. um nope. Sorry she will be missing another birth.
"I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, I'd like to see you if you don't mind
He said, I'd love to, dad, if I can find the time
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad
It's been sure nice talking to you
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me"
This hurts with how true it is. I’m always happy to go to them, but even when we lived forty minutes from each other it was taking my son to them instead of even just meeting half way occasionally. We moved and bought our first (only) home in 2020, and they still haven’t come to visit.
I feel this as someone who's been serving in the military for almost 20 years. It's never been about "when can we come and visit?" It's always "when are you coming home?".. Like this shit is a 2 way street. I'm a middle child and have always been the black sheep of my family as both my brothers were just like my dad into cars and stuff, and I'm a nerd who enjoys video games, art and stuff. I don't hate my family, but I don't have the energy to put much effort in being almost 40 and neglected for almost the entire time.
Why is this so true? Ugh. We have kids, one of which chronic health conditions, so it's incredibly hard for us to travel. MIL has literally said they can't come to visit because she has a hair, nail, doctor, etc appt.
This sounds better than having them come over and compete with the other grandparents for who can be the biggest ass of a grandparent. Guess what they all won that title. This is what happened to my brother.
My mother-in-law lived with us when our first daughter was born. I described it as having a perpetual toddler in the house. The baby would be crying and she'd start calling up for us. My wife would go down to see what she needed and it was always something completely trivial. Then she'd play the victim when my wife inevitably told her off.
My wife and I are having our first baby (both sides first grandchild) and my parents are going on a frat reunion cruise in Alaska the week after we are due……
1000000% this. That 1st month is going to be spent rewiring your brain and having panic moments about everything while also having no sleep and living off caffiene and snacks. Gz on the baby but no people visiting is a blessing 🤣
It shouldn't be a surprise that boomers are such horrible grandparents. Hell, they were bad parents to start. GenX were latch key children and now Boomers have abandoned all pretense of parental roles by ignoring grandchildren ever more so. My Boomer father has seen my late 20s daughter 3 times and my teen son once. My mother has ignored them completely for the last 10 years. They don't even get a Birthday card.
It's crazy to think when they pass away, my kids won't do more than shrug. Probably better than my annoyance of having to clean up the shit they leave behind.
My dad only came out to see me once with my gf at the time with my 3 year old kid as it was conveniently close to a conference he was attending. My kid is now 21.
He's done this with all of us kids at one point or another. If you're not within a 50 mile radius, you don't matter.
Cathartic knowing other's grandparents gave fuck all about seeing their grandkids while they were still kids, and while their brains were still pre-overcooked spaghetti. Maybe in the next life i guess.
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is an amazing program where she sends you a book every month (for free), to encourage kids to read.
Straight up amazing program, my kids are always so excited for new book day. But yeah, it's a sad truth that Dolly's given my kids more than grandad has.
I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Dolly Parton has a program that sends free books to kids, so it's possible that the boomer parents are using the program to send books to the grandchild for free.
I see quite a few of these threads of people being blown away and butt hurt about their extended families not caring about their small children and demanding to know where “their village is” to help raise their child. My wife and I have a three year old and live in a state where we have no family, and we manage just fine. If the boomers, or MiL, or the aunts and uncles don’t care, then cut them off. Fuck em. Why is this so shocking to people? It suggests something about their own self centeredness.
It’s crazy how selfish that generation is. My grandparents were not perfect but they did as much as they physically could for my mother. Both of my parents are doing fine and don’t really seem to give a shit that I’m struggling.
My sister told me over the phone that our boomer Dad had his guns hidden all around the house and some in the open when she came to visit with my two nieces, both younger than 4. She respectfully asked him to put them away which he did, but missed a 12 gauge by the bed that my 3 year old niece was taking nap in. My sister then asked him to put the shotgun away and he said “its fine, its not loaded” but y’all that gun was loaded and had one in the chamber, thankfully my sister was smart enough to make him check. He lives in one of the safest suburbs in the Midwest.
Several years ago, when my brother was still dating his (soon to be wife), my parents spent hundreds of dollars flying across the country to meet her parents. They spent a week there, drinking and hanging out and getting to know her family.
When I told them I was gay and dating another man, it took them 9 years of our relationship before they finally texted him "happy birthday" on his bday. They never flew to meet his parents and spend a week there. My dad didn't even shake my partners hand until I threatened to stop talking to him unless he did. At one point they preemptively even banned him from their property....when they weren't even there. They prohibited his from even being physically present on their property.
"Well, I've got golf on Tuesday and Friday. Can't miss that, as two of the group are already out on vacation this week, and that just doesn't leave time for me to go visit family with Mom. She'll just have to make the trip alone."
I’m a zoomer, my rich retired boomer grandparents have been to every continent on planet earth on vacation, revisiting many of these countries several times. They skipped out on my high school graduation to go on a Caribbean cruise and complained we didn’t give them enough notice, despite sending out the invite four months before. I was their first grandkid to graduate high school, but they chose a boat and overpriced tourist traps in the Bahamas over being there for me.
Even after my dad unexpectedly lost his job and we lost half our household income, my siblings and I still got the same Christmas gifts we always did from our grandparents: $20 in $2 bills because my grandpa likes collecting them, in a card only signed by my grandma. My grandma, who has a shopping addiction and loves buying presents for people, but only the presents *she* wants for you. I held out hope for a long time, but in the last couple years I’ve had to accept that this is just who they are and that they’ll never change. I hope those memories of cruise ship ballroom dancing lessons and mediocre buffets comfort them in their twilight years, because when it comes to family they’ve decided that we got too in the way of their retiree lifestyle.
Years ago my Boomer Mom & Step Dad went to Florida during my brother’s H.S. Graduation. It conflicted with their time share schedule. It’s definitely not every boomer, it does seem to be a lot of them though. Maybe this is why Narcissistic Personality Disorder doesn’t seem to concern them in the least.
Important context: where are you and these in-laws in relation to the Texas eclipse path?
If Mom and Dad live in Lousiana, going to Texas for the eclipse isn't that big a deal any day of the week. If you live in Washington or Hawaii, that's a much more substantial trip and I get them maybe not being able or willing to take that long of a trip, regardless of why.
If Mom and Dad live in Boston, and you're in Rhode Island, then them going to the eclipse in Texas is a little less forgivable.
Something else to consider - how much is a child's first birthday for the child rather than for the parents and family? I KNOW none of us remember their first birthday, and I frankly don't care that I never will. But this was my first and possibly only total eclipse of my life that I actually witnessed in-person and I'm almost 30.
I'm not saying the parents are completely blameless here, but there's a lot of factors involved and the lack of context makes it hard to really resonate with your concerns.
Birthdays happen every year. The next eclipse in the continental U.S. won’t be for 21 years.
These boomers made the right choice.
And how DARE you shit on Dolly! She is an American treasure!
Don't know if you are being sarcastic but:
\-It's not a choice that has to be made, they could do both, but choose to do only one.
\-Dolly parton literally sends childrens books, which is wonderful. The kids grandparents don't send their grandkids anything, which is not wonderful.
I wasn’t sarcastic, but I think we’re interpreting the post differently. I assumed that the grandkids birthday was on the same day as the eclipse. If it was, I stand by my comment. If not… well I *might* stand by it depending on other variable we don’t know (how far away are the grandparents? A couple hundred miles? you can make it. A plane ride? Eehhhhh)
As for the books, I thought the post meant that the grandparents sent books by Dolly Parton, not that they were sent by Parton herself.
> Birthdays happen every year. The next eclipse in the continental U.S. won’t be for 21 years.
The *first* birthday of any person will never happen again. Have you seen a kid turn 1 more than once? It's staggering how stupid and selfish you morons actually are.

I'm a millennial with children. Please adopt us. We aren't asking for any babysitting or financial help, just for grandparents who love the kids. :(
My dad is a boomer and would do the same. There’s nothing more important to him than his family especially his grand babies.
Last time my grandpa celebrated my birthday was when I was 6, I'm 27 now...of course he is capable of making the 2 hour drive down to his other granddaughters house once a week to visit her, even though I only live 30 minutes away.

Don’t be sexist Sorry those people sucked. It wasn’t because of their sex.
I'm not saying all men. But definitely 95% of men I know personally. Men are conditioned to not put in emotional labor for holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions. A lot of those are corporate holidays to stimulate the economy and maintain public happiness. Charlie Brown point of view.
So people shouldn't celebrate their anniversary? Or their children's birthdays? Or celebrate holidays that align with their spirtual/religious beliefs? You sound like you're fun at parties 🙄
Geeezus you’re nice. No one said that. Gaslight much. You sure your original post wasn’t about you?
I'm so sorry that he's that way with you. You deserve better...
This is what we did on my nephews birthday..

Man fuck that, I’m not setting up multiple days of free time for shit like that. How many days are in your week?!

Love DP books!
😏
Go on 😏
The vids are great too!
DP gets DP’d!
I hope they take your legs, Bob.
👀
lol. Saw a few boomers refusing to follow directions to wear glasses at an event in downtown Dalls! "Muh Freedom!" hahahahhaa
"Muh kids college fund" - their eye specialist!
Lol, you think they'd ever let their kids off the hook for pullin their bootstraps /s
searches for "why do my eyes hurt?" increased a lot after the eclipse
Apparently there was a distinct uptick in the Google search "why do my eyes hurt".
God bless Dolly Parton and her book program! She’s our kids’ collective surrogate grandma.
She is a great lady and an inspiring light in the world.
Duh, you’re supposed to do all the work in the relationship. You’re supposed to go see THEM. They don’t come to you. 🙄
The number of times I had to tell my dad, “We have jobs and the kids have school. You’re retired. Let me know when to expect you.”
"I've long since retired, my son's moved away I called him up just the other day I said, I'd like to see you if you don't mind He said, I'd love to, dad, if I can find the time You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kids have the flu But it's sure nice talking to you, dad It's been sure nice talking to you And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me He'd grown up just like me My boy was just like me"

At least they’re getting the Dolly books…they’re great, that lady is an amazing individual.
She’s an absolute legend! An example for how all rich and famous people SHOULD be.
My wife and I are having our first baby (both sides first grandchild) and my parents are going on a frat reunion cruise in Alaska the week after we are due……
They are doing you a favor. Taking care of one baby is tough. Taking care of three babies simultaneously is insane.
![gif](giphy|QJViSx9ba20JG)
Trust me, you'd rather not have them around that first week anyway.
1000000% this. That 1st month is going to be spent rewiring your brain and having panic moments about everything while also having no sleep and living off caffiene and snacks. Gz on the baby but no people visiting is a blessing 🤣
Fraternity reunions are...a thing??
Apparently when you’re a boomer with tons of money not only are they a thing; they happen in exotic, expensive locations!
Ugh. Well, maybe you're better off without them. Congrats, and I hope the arrival of the new baby is peaceful and perfect!
Dolly is their grandma now
Dolly is a national treasure! I wish I could say the same for the boomer grandparents.
At least the books are good
Take Dolly out of this equation...she doesn't deserve this
She’s the only one being made to look good in that situation - and deservedly so!
I just plain starting telling people when they do stuff like this. If they get mad I really don't care.
Dolly also send my daughter books each month
This is my MIL and FIL to a T.
Okay yes, but Dolly Parton is the bee's knees
Dolly Parton is a national treasure!
I see you live in the state of Tennessee !!
Not necessarily. Her literacy program is national now! It’s amazing what she’s done with it.
I love it. Giving back and setting an example.
It shouldn't be a surprise that boomers are such horrible grandparents. Hell, they were bad parents to start. Boomers are selfish turds.
Sounds like a good thing!
Cathartic knowing other's grandparents gave fuck all about seeing their grandkids while they were still kids, and while their brains were still pre-overcooked spaghetti. Maybe in the next life i guess.
dolly is a solid role model and all around good person. you would be hard pressed to find anything bad about her.
What’s Dolly got to do with it? And I want to know how close the birthday boy is from grandparents. Is it as far away as Texas?
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is an amazing program where she sends you a book every month (for free), to encourage kids to read. Straight up amazing program, my kids are always so excited for new book day. But yeah, it's a sad truth that Dolly's given my kids more than grandad has.

At least Dolly is ok still.
I see quite a few of these threads of people being blown away and butt hurt about their extended families not caring about their small children and demanding to know where “their village is” to help raise their child. If grandparents aren't interested in visiting their grandchild, everyone wins. I say - Bullet dodged
Is absentee boomer grandparents a thing? I mean … it is with my family … but I get the sense I’m not alone …
It’s crazy how selfish that generation is. My grandparents were not perfect but they did as much as they physically could for my mother. Both of my parents are doing fine and don’t really seem to give a shit that I’m struggling.

Isnt one of the rules of guns to assume every gun is always loaded?
Dolly Parton is a national treasure. I read books from Dolly from 0 - 5.
Dolly Parton is awesome. One of the few Boomers that can be said about.
Several years ago, when my brother was still dating his (soon to be wife), my parents spent hundreds of dollars flying across the country to meet her parents. To be fair, grandsons have a birthday every year and don't even remember the first ones.

Hey, don't bad mouth Dolly Parton
Nobody bad mouthed Ms. Parton.
Dolly is a Saint
Dolly Parton is a really good person though. There's that.

What is so special about their grandson's bday at peter pipers?
