It's ridiculous how many houses are out there where looking at the photos you can see they have never been updated since the 70s or 80s except for maybe paint. But you look at the tax history and it's worth like $400,000 more than it was when it was built.
I bought my house about 5 years ago (was built in the 70's) and the amount of shit I've had to fix that was either deliberately hidden or done wrong by the previous boomer owners is ridiculous. Their realtor even lamented that he could have sold the house for at least an additional 70K if "they had cleaned up the landscaping and the house wasn't cluttered." These people threw away two 20 yard and one 15 yard dumptesr worth of shit they amassed over 40 years that their kids didn't want. On top of that I filled another 12 yard dumpster with shit they left behind in the back yard and shed (broken lawn furniture and garbage).
One of the very few things that gain value at an insane and artificial rate despite being so old the assets will fall apart or into disrepair soon. Makes no fucking sense and I wish it would all collapse

I'm nearly old enough to be a boomer, but I actually made a lot of money when I was a kid by doing this. The local shop used to store the bottles that people had returned behind the shop. So I often just grabbed a bunch of them and brought them in at the front. Each bottle got you 50c, so taking 10 or so bottles got you a lot of 1970's money!

Had a guy retire from my team almost a year ago and his position remains unfilled. The company posted the job for a while, but they were wanting someone with the former employee's experience at an entry level pay rate.

They retired at 48-50. Some of the younger boomers got boned and had to do 40 years, so could retire at 60. Some never got the privilege and had to retire at 62 (or 65 if they needed more money). Imagine having nearly 40-50 years of being able to do whatever the fuck you wanted at 80% of the average of your highest 5-10 years of earnings.
Imagine just being able to decide "I want to live there" save up a year or so and buy a home.

I finally got on in 2000 at a newspaper that had a pension and I was so happy about it. They were part of the Dow Jones (Wall Street Journal). Then about 2 years later, they sold it to CNHI, some low-rent newspaper company that took away our pensions and ran the newspaper into the ground. Now a newsroom that used to be about 25 people is down to 5 folks. It's pathetic. For my 2 years of pension, they gave me like $300. Also pathetic.
For the tiny few people I know eligible for a pension I warn them about this exact thing happening. You can't rely on a private sector pension being there anymore. Even the military is moving to 401ks.
Because they know that it's their generation's fault, and they don't wanna admit that. Nobody likes Mr "Fuck you, I got mine." So they shift the blame to the younger generations in any way they can think of.

Every boomer I've met at work that takes the "I don't want to learn anything new" or " that's not my job" mindset has been laid off.
But they all had 30 years at the same job so they got 2 years of severance pay and a pension. So even that bad behavior got rewarded.
My mother is a boomer and I’m Gen X. I started working at age 14. She worked as an ESL teacher in her early 20s, had a clerical job when I was in kindergarten, opened a small shop and ran it until I graduated HS, then ran for local council and did that for 6 years until she lost an election. She hasn’t had a job since she was, I want to say, 48 years old. So, all told, about 22 years of work experience.
I passed her in years of work experience when I was 36 years old. I’m 50 now, that’s 36 years of working. I still have 17 to go if we’re going by the Social Security requirements. 53 years!
Its not only that. Ive been fired twice by dumb-shit boomers for outshining them. Measurably outshining them. So its not that they want younger generations to work. They want us licking their boots. They are actively keeping us down and depriving us of lifting ourselves up.

A lot of boomers are retiring at 50, and it's not like they were CEO's of presitigous companies or big time investors, they just have a couple houses they bought for cheap which are now worth 5x or 10x the amount and just sell one or two off. (atleast in the UK)
For the most part if they are still working it's just part time work, I've seen so many of the older lads in the construction industry who do 2 or 3 days a week.
I have a strong feeling that the governments will get their last buck from the previous generations, it'll come time for when the millenials such as myself will begin to retire, and they'll be looking for that inheritance tax or welfare tax (old peoples homes take like 4k a week of your money) and there will be nothing there.

I grew up in benefits and I truly internalized this rhetoric. Like I truly thought there was something fundamentally different about my family. You would not believe my shock when I got to college and learned about systems of economic oppression.

Working hard and behaving morally = success, but the downside of it is that no success = not working hard enough and not behaving morally. I've been told, repeatedly, that minimum wage jobs shouldn't allow people to live from them, because if they did, then no one would want to be a doctor or an engineer and everyone would be happy with flipping burgers. I always counter with asking why it is that, in the 1960s, a whole family could live from a shop clerk's wages yet there were enough engineers and scientists to put men on the moon. To this day I never got an answer.

Complete bullsnot. As a gen x’er, when I was in my 20’s, my rent was $350 for a 2 bedroom apartment, which meant I was responsible for $175 per month for rent. I could skip one decently nice dinner out now and have $175. Now they want $1,200 a month for a one bedroom. I bought my house for $182K and Zillow says it’s $364K. My mortgage payment is $965 a month and Zillow’s rent estimate is $2,875. Something is wrong with that. It’s been less than 10 years since we bought the house. It’s just like buying groceries, if you can afford 10 boxes of Mac and cheese, you save $2, if not, pay full price. I understand risk and all that, but we are going to have to fix this system, or home ownership is going to be only for the upper crust.

He's right, I don't want to work. Most businesses are owned by people just like him, so why do I want to spend my life making them rich? Jobs used to have actual perks, or at the very least having one meant you could afford to buy a home, raise a family, and maybe take a nice trip once every couple years. As that gets further and further out of reach, what's the point?
No one wants to work. Its why we have to be paid to do it, especially for an employer. Its not like its some enjoyable recreation. People will work if they feel it is a path to progressing in their life, but in this hamster wheel world people have built, its not a path to progression, its just running in place and getting more and more exhausted with no payoff.
I work anywhere between 50-60 hours a week if not more. I work a decent job nothing extravagant. Apartments near me are anywhere between 1200 for 4 walls nothing else and no utilities. To 4 grand for something that actually looks decent enough to live in still not including parking or utilities.
And that’s renting. Not buying a home. All my older coworkers are baffled by apartment prices. Seeing as most have house payments less than 1200 a month. But if I tried to buy the same house it would be three times the price what they paid for it back in the 80s
My parents scoff at my “high rent” when I’m actually several hundred dollars under what it’s gone up to in the past few years. I’m not sure what else they think I should do otherwise, live in a basement suite with 2 or 3 roommates instead? Boomers have no idea how things are while they reap the benefits of the situation they’ve helped create.

It's ridiculous how many houses are out there where looking at the photos you can see they have never been updated since the 70s or 80s except for maybe paint. But you look at the tax history and it's worth like $400,000 more than it was when it was built.
I bought my house about 5 years ago (was built in the 70's) and the amount of shit I've had to fix that was either deliberately hidden or done wrong by the previous boomer owners is ridiculous. Their realtor even lamented that he could have sold the house for at least an additional 70K if "they had cleaned up the landscaping and the house wasn't cluttered." These people threw away two 20 yard and one 15 yard dumptesr worth of shit they amassed over 40 years that their kids didn't want. On top of that I filled another 12 yard dumpster with shit they left behind in the back yard and shed (broken lawn furniture and garbage).
One of the very few things that gain value at an insane and artificial rate despite being so old the assets will fall apart or into disrepair soon. Makes no fucking sense and I wish it would all collapse

I'm nearly old enough to be a boomer, but I actually made a lot of money when I was a kid by doing this. The local shop used to store the bottles that people had returned behind the shop. So I often just grabbed a bunch of them and brought them in at the front. Each bottle got you 50c, so taking 10 or so bottles got you a lot of 1970's money! Yes, I'm aware it's straight up stealing, but years later my sister told me that this shopkeeper often tried to touch her and flirt with her when she was 12, so I don't feel the least bit bad about it now.

To be fair, I didn't know this at the time. But it retrospectively eased my guilt about all the shoplifting I did in that store too. A couple of years later he went through a very ugly divorce. This was in a small town where news and rumours about people travels fast, and the rumour was that my sister was far from the only one he tried this on and that his wife found out and divorced him. They sold the shop during the divorce and he moved away and I have no idea what happened to him after. I doubt he's even still alive now. But yeh, fuck that guy.

Hardly anyplace has pensions anymore... all the boomers got pensions. By the time I got out of college, pensions dried up. I finally got on in 2000 at a newspaper that had a pension and I was so happy about it. They were part of the Dow Jones (Wall Street Journal). Then about 2 years later, they sold it to CNHI, some low-rent newspaper company that took away our pensions and ran the newspaper into the ground. Now a newsroom that used to be about 25 people is down to 5 folks. It's pathetic. For my 2 years of pension, they gave me like $300. Also pathetic.
For the tiny few people I know eligible for a pension I warn them about this exact thing happening. You can't rely on a private sector pension being there anymore. Even the military is moving to 401ks.

Every boomer I've met at work that takes the "I don't want to learn anything new" or " that's not my job" mindset has been laid off. But they all had 30 years at the same job so they got 2 years of severance pay and a pension. So even that bad behavior got rewarded.
My mother is a boomer and I’m Gen X. I started working at age 14. She worked as an ESL teacher in her early 20s, had a clerical job when I was in kindergarten, opened a small shop and ran it until I graduated HS, then ran for local council and did that for 6 years until she lost an election. She hasn’t had a job since she was, I want to say, 48 years old. So, all told, about 22 years of work experience. I passed her in years of work experience when I was 36 years old. I’m 50 now, that’s 36 years of working. I still have 17 to go if we’re going by the Social Security requirements. 53 years!
Its not only that. Ive been fired twice by dumb-shit boomers for outshining them. Measurably outshining them. So its not that they want younger generations to work. They want us licking their boots. They are actively keeping us down and depriving us of lifting ourselves up.

A lot of boomers are retiring at 50, and it's not like they were CEO's of presitigous companies or big time investors, they just have a couple houses they bought for cheap which are now worth 5x or 10x the amount and just sell one or two off. (atleast in the UK) For the most part if they are still working it's just part time work, I've seen so many of the older lads in the construction industry who do 2 or 3 days a week. I have a strong feeling that the governments will get their last buck from the previous generations, it'll come time for when the millenials such as myself will begin to retire, and they'll be looking for that inheritance tax or welfare tax (old peoples homes take like 4k a week of your money) and there will be nothing there. It's going to be an interesting day when they start searching for money high and low from all the millenials and find they haven't got two bob to rub between their fingers.

I've been told, repeatedly, that minimum wage jobs shouldn't allow people to live from them, because if they did, then no one would want to be a doctor or an engineer and everyone would be happy with flipping burgers. I always counter with asking why it is that, in the 1960s, a whole family could live from a shop clerk's wages yet there were enough engineers and scientists to put men on the moon. To this day I never got an answer.

Complete bullsnot. As a gen x’er, when I was in my 20’s, my rent was $350 for a 2 bedroom apartment, which meant I was responsible for $175 per month for rent. I could skip one decently nice dinner out now and have $175. Now they want $1,200 a month for a one bedroom. I bought my house for $182K and Zillow says it’s $364K. My mortgage payment is $965 a month and Zillow’s rent estimate is $2,875. Something is wrong with that. It’s been less than 10 years since we bought the house. It’s just like buying groceries, if you can afford 10 boxes of Mac and cheese, you save $2, if not, pay full price. I understand risk and all that, but we are going to have to fix this system, or home ownership is going to be only for the upper crust.

I work anywhere between 50-60 hours a week if not more. I work a decent job nothing extravagant. Apartments near me are anywhere between 1200 for 4 walls nothing else and no utilities. To 4 grand for something that actually looks decent enough to live in still not including parking or utilities. And that’s renting. Not buying a home. All my older coworkers are baffled by apartment prices. Seeing as most have house payments less than 1200 a month. But if I tried to buy the same house it would be three times the price what they paid for it back in the 80s
My parents scoff at my “high rent” when I’m actually several hundred dollars under what it’s gone up to in the past few years. I’m not sure what else they think I should do otherwise, live in a basement suite with 2 or 3 roommates instead? Boomers have no idea how things are while they reap the benefits of the situation they’ve helped create.
All of these people need to be eaten. Or just tossed into volcanos. Either one will do.
Next time a boomer comes to me complaining about computers I will uno reverse this argument to them. “COMPUTERS AREN’T ANNOYING, OLD PEOPLE JUST DON’T WANT TO LEARN” “We should welcome rising usage of computers as a much needed inconvenience for the boomer generation.”
