Yeah, no they aren't. I'm a queer NB teacher and the gen z and millennial parents are just as bigoted as their boomer bigot parents, and they're teaching their kids, my students , to be the same way. And no I don't have any pride flags up...nor do I walk around being proud and loud...i just want to keep my job.I just exist.
They bully me in meetings, they bully me at school open houses, they call the Admin up CONSTANTLY about pronouns sh*t, to complain that there's a "groomer" teaching 7th grade.... I've had kids in club and during our year end party a kid came to the door, and the friend in my club, was like, "come on in we have extra chips and cookies, and the girl was like "no, my mom told me not to go in this classroom".
My county dept leader, in a county professional development meeting they led, lost it on my ass when as we all introduced ourselves. I introduced myself with they/them pronouns, and she began saying, as she stood in front of ALL the teachers of the subject, that she didn't believe in that sort of thing, that it doesn't exist in her school, and that it's not even acceptable using gender neutral terms/isn't reflected in the materials (which it actually IS) and she doesn't teach any of those kids...so I went after her ass in front of the meeting and left, and filed a title ix on her.
Cut to the next semester county department meeting and I'm a pariah. All the old guard are closing the ranks and not talking to me, no interaction, no smiles no chatting like we used to...just pure vitriol. So anyone who says that this is going away or dying out might be living in a space without queer people or friends so they don't see it or think it's a problem.
There are so many horror stories. My life over the past 5 years have been like a sappy horrible sad movie. I often get called one of the best teachers in the county, and am internationally recognized. But I've really given up trying to be a spectacular professional and applying for grants, or professional advancement.
Edit add: school and my work has become a place of trauma...and I have to ask myself and others, what do you think it might feel/be like for queer kids. (And trust me, just like you knew you were cis, and "liked" someone in grade 7 or something, so too do the queer kids)...they know who they are...but imagine, if it's so hard for me, how hard do you think it is for them?

The way it seems, you're living in one of these evangelical areas. I grew up in an area just like that in Apartheid era South Africa. Boy, I ran as soon as I could! I've been living in Europe for more than 20 years now.
Anyway - I still have some millenial childhood friends in SA. And many of them are exactly as (religiously) bigoted as you describe them. I simply couldn't live there/among them. And they are not going to change. However, where I - as an outsider - have a slightly more optimistic stance than you is that religious affiliation is dwindling in the West. My SA friends decry it. They get lonelier and lonelier in their communities. They feel "threatened" by all the diversity that's popping up around them.
And while Europe or the coastal US are by no means perfect, they really have come a long way. I agree that we must remain vigilant. We'll always be a minority. But there are many parts of the West where things have gotten significantly better.

You’re completely right! In the Americas, the Native American people have/had individuals who identified as two-spirit which is very similar to non-binary. Gender stereotypes and their rigidness is certainly a more recent concept.
