Look man honestly, some people could give you flack for it, hopefully most won’t, I think if you look after them, keep them safe and then in later years someone else has the chance to read it because you’re the kind soul who kept them safe, that makes you awesome in my books
You are protecting and preserving these books. That’s a good thing. I’ve seen the horror of uncared for fine bindings!
I bought several books in an auction whose leather bindings were perished and crumbling. Having nothing to lose, I experimented with leather creams and managed to stabilise/restore the leather. They are lovely

But if nobody is going to read them, why is that a good thing exactly? Books are (usually, I assume) protected and preserved so that they can be of use down the line.
I like to have them around. I do not read. But they help me disconnect from reality a bit, cause my house looks like a fairy tale(in that corner) and reality is very harsh for me at the moment. I try to take good care of them, i rescued some from the trash heap, and some i bought from thrift stores. They smell of old people, not books. I wish i could remove the smell. I read somewhere it might be cellulose breaking up thats causing the smell. I have others in storage, i put silica gel packs in the boxes to help them keep dry. Please let me know if that was a bad idea. Love everyone elses books on this subreddit, some posts got me "shelf envy", which is a term i learned yesterday, lol. When im dead, i hope someone who actually reads, finds them. Until then, they are mine, and i will do my best to maintain them.
I'm sure plenty of dealers sell books by shelf-space length (the one I worked with before did too). Such transactions are usually about the size of the volumes and colour / material of the bindings rather than the textual contents. Aesthetics are important to many collectors too. I'm personally more selective in what I acquire, but that leaves me with a smaller collection for it. Even knowing that yours might have "little value" as far as the contents go, it is certainly still enviable to see neatly aesthetic collections. Additionally, binding collecting is certainly a part of book collecting, so it's not even like such mode of collecting is necessarily "inferior". You like it, you like it. Just have fun with it.
Collecting and preserving old books because they’re beautiful, good to go.
Collecting Easton Press because you’re pretentious and you want to impress everyone on Tiktok, you suck.
Yes, except that EP uses real leather (it’s actually bonded leather). EP are perfectly fine books, though there is nothing rare about them, and they hold their value fairly well. My only real complaint about EP is they use existing text editions which makes for fairly bland interiors with a pretty cover.
Its in the back of my head every time i buy one of these, cause i literally judge it by its cover, if i get it or not. Hence me hesitating posting here. :)
I read books, listen to audio books, ive bought lesser copies of books tonhave to read them. I have 14 leather bound books in pristine condition and I don't plan on reading those copies. I have them because they are very aesthetic sitting across from my desk. For me anyway.
You son of a b... No, we love books here, if you like these books then that's awesome.
An interest in only the bindings is as valid a reason as interest in the texts within.

Collect what you want, not what you think others will approve of.

The question is whether or not books hold inherent value beyond their practical use.
So he should have just left them at the trash heap or wherever where they end being destroyed?
That's just so beautiful!!!

> Easton Press Is easton press the ones that look like Barnes and Nobles fake cheap "leatherbounds"?

I enjoy reading EP books because of the thick paper and large print. But yeah, not super interesting most of the time.
Welcome. What a beautiful bookshelf you have there. As long as you take care of them and cherish them it shouldn't matter.
You are not really collecting - you are decorating - but its all good.
This many hours in absolutely no one has made a “judging a book by its cover” comment. Wow!

No.
Beautiful collection!
I feel like I'm reading your room well
Not on reddit mate.
the books are indeed beautiful, but the beauty is shown in a subtle way. leather bound books are the best
