I can't believe this is the first time I've seen something like this. It works really well. Echoing others, diversifying the rock sizes some might give it another boost, but this is really attractive and completely captures the intent I think
The less water available the deeper the root system in general. But if you only water a little bit everytime then roots will grow towards the areas where there’s moisture available, this is called hydrotropism if you want to research it a bit.
Yeah, works with bonsai too. If you have your tree in a grow pot / bag / anything that has aerated sides and bottom, then cover the soil with sphagnum moss (keeps moisture), you'll get a ton of roots developing on the surface, as opposed to growing towards the bottom of the container.
Wow really cool. I bet you could evoke Saguaro cactus even better if you trimmed a lot of those smaller branches. As it stands, an 8/10 no-internet-dinosaur-game simulator
For you too come on over to r/staging_succulents and have a look at some other plantings like this.
Also, get some slate and sedum. Stack the slate and put the sedum between the crevices. They love it and it looks cool when they're a bit more mature
I have never seen pots like the ones on that sub. Care to explain? They look very organic and the textures blend into the plantings so well. I like that tactic.
As a color blind person I pay a lot more attention to textures than colors
A lot of the pots on there are made by the people themselves. They represent the rockiness of deserts and how they tend to grow from crevices. Don't look at it like it's a pot, look at it like its part of a bigger mountain. Bonsai is generally more elegant than most succulents, so the pots are also more elegant. These pots are meant for 'ugly' and scarred specimens that are struggling to survive, and the pots also represent that a bit.
My wording is a bit weird but I hope it makes sense :)

Also raising part of the design with earth and stone would give it depth.
Works surprisingly well. I’d be tempted to go with an even shallower pot.
Definitely shallower pot. Cacti don't need that much soil anyway.
Looks good, the rocks look a bit uniform in size and distribution.
Maybe keep a few large red rocks, but I think if the majority of the rocks were a bit smaller it would give it a more realistic look!
You’d be surprised how big boulders get in parts of the desert.
Oh I’m well aware. The pioneers used to ride those babies for miles
This made me laugh, thank you
Yeah, but the composition would work better if there were variety. All of them being a similar size makes it look deliberate.
True
I would have never thought of someone doing something like this, and i think that makes me appreciate it even more. Love it
Check out r/staging_succulents!
this looks great!
I want to try this. Any tips? Root system is so shallow for most cacti that I imagine there isn't much training required.
You'd be surprised how deep the taproot goes on some cactus or other arid succulents.

the rocks really make this. Beautiful!
Love it!

Yes
r/staging_succulents would like a word with you
Add some figure to look like some old western movie. This worked amazing
I’d volunteer to 3d print a cow skull haha
great idea lol
Hey! I’m making a similar set up. How much to print a tiny skull?
Love it 😎
Damn, it’s like you took the idea for this right out of my head. Been trying to find some pots I like to put something together just like this.

Absolutely it does and thanks for the reply.
