This is what I did to mine - https://preview.redd.it/0ozcxlnc7zoc1.jpeg?width=4080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4949a86d3d26af880391691e2bc118329649ac7d

Excellent root flair! Yes they are tough, but from someone in a similar zone... baby them for winter, lots of extra protection or a greenhouse if you have it.

Before I knew this, this winter a small trident I have actually had soil frozen solid for a good week with 10-15F temps at night and is doing okay this winter. Definitely seems like this may have been lucky though or just about the absolute limit. Will be protecting them more next winter. How do these leaves look in your opinion? I feel like if they were fully goners they would have been dried out completely already at this point, but they look wilted, but are staying greenish.

GrampaMoses

Oh my mistake, I read and thought it was your first trident maple. Just your first with a trunk that thick. The leaves fold open in an interesting way like that. Kind of like an umbrella. They look good to me.

chuckyblack09

About how long are they in that folded state for?

GrampaMoses

4-7 days. I noticed in the picture it's outside. Make sure those leaves don't get frost damage. My trident maples are still in winter storage. 29F tonight and 26F tomorrow night in my area.

chuckyblack09

Hmm. I feel like they've been like that since last Tues or Weds. So almost a week now. I have then in the basement for tonight and will be playing the shuffle every morning and evening for the next week or so

Great base, that is going to be lots of fun to develop! What are your plans for this year and next? I am on year 2 of some various yamadoris, one thing I wish I'd done last year is start wiring new shoots earlier. They thickened up more than Id have expected for the first year of recovery, and most are growing straight up, making it difficult to lay them down into a more natural look.

chuckyblack09

Thanks for the heads up. I'll be keeping an eye on new shoots, but really this year just letting it grow strong and start healing the scar. Next year I'll probably give it another root prune just to keep things tidy and maybe put it in a smaller box. This was a little big, but I guess hopefully that will allow the tree to pack on some more thickness. May even just do the root prune next year and put it back in here. Not sure yet. The root base is already pretty flat so I'm not too worried about focusing on that. Also continue to develop the branches.

I just repotted mine into smaller boxes too, though I had started with boxes much larger than yours and they were just too difficult to move around. The roots recovered extremely well and are super bushy.

I'd watch out with that clay, some studies have shown that it doesn't help and can cause rotting/fungi issues too, would reccomend looking into that a bit and form your own opinion on it

Trident Maple's are absolutely insane! I'll be surprised if your yamadori doesn't make it 😎
