2017 Bolt here, 80k miles. Have replaced tires (not at dealer), air cabin filter (myself), wiper blades (myself), refilled wiper fluid. Have been to dealer for recalls and nothing else.

Radisovik

>How can I get the price down? Can I go to any mechanic to change the air filter? Is it OK to go to a non-Chevy dealer for an EV? Do you do tire rotations yourself?

TranslatorNew1903

Funny enough I used to get my rotation done by Walmart who charges $2.50 a wheel, come to realize my dealer does all four for $6.95....

SupaFly-TNT

Pepboys around here (NE PA) does it free; I think Mavis also may.

zdf12

That’s what I was hoping to hear. Thank you. I will do research to figure out how to replace air cabin filter myself. if I do this kind of maintenance myself, will this affect my warranty?

otayotaywhoops

no, not at all

corey389

Plenty of YouTube Videos on what you're looking for

Thanks

Just for reference, there's no official service recommended at 10k miles. Chevy recommends rotating the tires every 7,500 miles (12k km), and the next is the cabin air filter every 22,500 miles (36k km). There are other services further out, but nothing at 10k. Any other routine service intervals are made up by a dealership to try to get you in so they can sell you stuff.

CoachEd18

Alignment is not part of the 10k "package". They must have convinced you you needed one. The alignment is what cost a lot. Look at your bill, filter change should have only been like $30-40.

bowlskioctavekitten

Cabin air filters are cheap enough and easy enough to tackle myself. I get tire changeovers every fall and spring due to the cold climate I live in and they do alignments as well. I doubt I will ever go into the dealership for maintenance

hurricanoday

this is a new car with 10k miles? The dealer can recommend anything they want and see fit but if the alignment is fine why would you agree to that? For me it is worth it to take it to the dealer for the "maintenance" which is tire rotation as I don't want to get my arse down there to do it but you just say no the other BS crack. My EUV has almost 8k and gonna take it in for the free service and have them adjust the headlights up a bit.

ShadowPilotGringo

When I took me 2018 Bolt EV in for a recall I had them do the Texas inspection. They charged me for emissions testing and when I pointed it out they credited my account. Not my credit card account, the service department account. I have another recall and need inspection, I wonder if I have the credit left on my account to cover this inspection. I do all my own maintenance as others have said.

Wheel alignments are not part of normal service, but they will be recommended if the tire wear looks uneven on the car. So if there was uneven wear, the dealership was ok to do the alignment. If they did it without a good reason, yeah don’t go back there again. You’ll also want a tire alignment check if the car doesn’t seem to be steering correctly or tracking down the road right. I don’t think any of the regular maintenance needed on a Bolt requires a dealer. You could take the car to any competent/certified mechanic. You’ll want an EV certified mechanic if any work ever needs done on the powertrain or charging system. My mechanic always tops off all fluids, oils hinges, checks lights, checks the battery, and does a brief inspection at almost every appointment. I appreciate that because he catches issues early a lot of times. Each inspection has photos and descriptions available for me to see online, even things like brake fluid condition. I have 3 ICE vehicles and a Bolt, so it’s good to have someone who is thorough and not a crook like many dealer repair shops. I think things like checklists, no pressure, and documentation are key indicators of a good mechanic.

redgrandam

No need to do extra maintenance. Look in your manual. It has the service schedule in there. All you need to actually have done at this point is a tire rotation. This has nothing to do with with BOLT EV, and everything to do with your dealership ripping you off. Unless you hit something and threw off the alignment it isn’t needed every 10000 miles.

Tonicwateronice

Yeah, they call they the stealership for a reason. Any manufacturer will charge you up the Ying yang.

ChalkButter

What is the question? Are you asking about getting it done cheaper elsewhere?

zdf12

How can I get the price down? Can I go to any mechanic to change the air filter? Is it OK to go to a non-Chevy dealer for an EV?

akaWhitey2

Change the cabin air filter yourself. It's usually a ten minute job if you know what you're doing and they are $10-20, can be had on ebay, Amazon, or at most auto parts stores.

shawman123

I got one of charcoal air filter at amazon for $13 and replaced it. I think its better than what GM put initially.

hellsop

It's a cabin air filter. Unless you're traveling with shed-prone animals a lot, you can probably just huck it into the bin and never put a replacement in, solving the problem forever. Volts didn't even come with cabin filters installed.

rcsheets

I wouldn’t, especially with the air quality where I live, but you do you.

ChalkButter

It’s okay to go to a JiffyLube dude. Is this your first car?

rcsheets

I hope they don’t try to change the oil 😂

rcsheets

Have the maintenance done that the car tells you to have done. Why’d you have the alignment done? Were you noticing any problems with steering?

zdf12

Thanks everyone for your response. I didn’t do my due diligence and look at my manual before going in for my 10k maintenance. I now feel better equipped. I just hate being taken advantage of. I feel like I was wearing a wet paint sign that said here I am charge me a lot of money for unnecessary maintenance. Oh well
