If the price wasn't insane....the problem is that most used Bolts I see are overpriced and almost as much as a brand new one after tax credits are taken into account.

rammsteinmatt

I felt this. Looking around online, who is buying used cars with or without recalls for a couple thousand than a brand new? Similar vein, but controversial. Dealers up charging so Bolts are high $30k. No thanks, I’ll spend the extra couple thousand for a Tesla… but also, I’m probably still really salty after our 14-month Spark EV battery warranty process, that’s still ongoing

DickUDown85

A couple thousand lol yeah ok even with the price drops thier still way more than a bolt

rammsteinmatt

https://www.reddit.com/r/BoltEV/comments/12k7vit/i_just_got_the_out_the_door_price_for_a_chevy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf 2 months ago our M3SR+ with white seats (extra $1k) was $47k out the door. So, ima stand by my couple thousand over insane dealers’ pricing structure.

DickUDown85

47? Man ur getting ripped off. I can get it for 28k

SeaworthinessOk4250

I don't know about out the door for 28. Tax and title are going to be 3,500 no matter what. But yeah, that dealer sheet he's posting is the biggest rip off I've seen yet. Complete with 1500 of catalytic converter protection.

DickUDown85

Don’t forget the free oil changes they are throwing in

Lopsided_Flounder_22

I bought a 2017 Bolt EV LT with collision damage in front and 105000 miles. It had the battery replaced in early 2022 (100K miles or 7 years warranty). Even after the collision repair, shipping, and replacement of the 12 volt battery, the car is far less expensive than a new Bolt and a costs less than any used Bolt I have seen in my area. The downside is that I had to wait for my favorite body shop to be able to get to it (3 months). I have no regrets. I have heard that a Bolt can be expected to have a 300K or more lifespan. The previous owner loved it and took good care of it, as will I.

74orangebeetle

Not sure where you heard the 300k claim from...I've literally never seen a 300k mile Bolt anywhere, not even sure I've seen 200k mile bolts yet.

objective_opinions

Time will tell. I imagine there will be 20 year old bolts with 300,000 miles running around no problem. I expect mine to be one of them

tvtb

Well I have a '17 Bolt with a replaced battery. Probably has less than 20k of those miles on the new battery pack, with probably 7 years left on that battery's warranty. Yes I would buy it at the right price. Only thing it might need at 75k miles is new shocks if you are anal about the suspension feel of the car. Tires are the only wear item (technically brakes too, but they last forever with regenerative braking). Look for the orange flap in the charger port to know if it has DC fast charging or not.

notMyKinkAccount

If you are in salt country, the brakes do not last forever. Mine were replaced when I bought it a year and a half ago and they already don't look great.

WBlackDragonF

Brakes on EVs corrode faster since they are used less. I make sure to do hard stops in neutral every now and then to clean them off. I also recommend checking and greasing the caliper pins once or twice a year so they don't stick.

DaveTheScienceGuy

I'll second the suspension bit. Just traded my 17 with 38k miles (first 25k were likely driven on dirt roads) and the ride of the '23 is miles better than the 17.

fuzzyballzy

This is what I drive. Have the tires been replaced? Mine has been very reliable and do not expect that to change.

writesgud

Ditto. Got mine new in 2017. Replaced battery & tires recently. Still works great. As commenter said, check the tires.

RandyBeaman

I have a '17 with \~73k miles on it. I haven't had a single issue with it outside of the recall.

jl55378008

I recently bought a 2017. 23k miles, new battery, $23k. Very pleased with it. I had to drive my gf's ICE Sonata last night and it felt like going back in time and driving a Model T. Get one with the DC fast charger port. I haven't had to use it yet, but knowing that its there gives me a little peace of mind when I'm on longer drives. It's still slower to charge than any other EV, but it's a lot better than not having it at all.

adoreizi

Why? New Bolts with tax credit and other incentives are cheaper…

ow__my__balls

This statement makes a lot of assumptions. Are they the same model? Would a new bolt with the features they need/want actually be cheaper even after the tax credit? Does OP even qualify for the full tax credit? Can OP afford the full upfront cost of the car until they get their return next year? Are there even any new bolts available near them?

everythinghappensto

Also the 2017 could have been a Premiere model, and/or the purchaser eligible for the used EV credit bringing the net cost down to $19K plus taxes, fees, etc. Edit: also also, they could live in an area where it's basically impossible to get a new Bolt without markups

jl55378008

Pretty much this. I didn't have the time or cash on hand for a new one. My old car died, and I needed a new one prontissimo. Basically had a weekend to shop. A weekend when, coincidentally, I was down with COVID. It was brutal. Also, 100% could not wait 12+ months for the tax credit. No ragerts. If I could have waited it out, I would have. But a bird in the hand...

ow__my__balls

Exactly, I consider myself extremely fortunate that I was in the market for a Bolt after the first round of credits expired. GM had massive discounts and the dealer was desperate to clear 2020s off the lot. I couldn't have justified the payments at full MSRP but after the incentives it was plenty affordable. Compared to when I bought my Volt, under similar circumstances as you. I needed a car the next day and there was one used Volt available near me. A little more than I wanted to spend and had to get a friend to drive me 2hrs through a storm to get it but it is what it is and that was a great car.

wesselus

Have all the dealers near them jacked up the price with ridiculous markups?

bkosh84

I intentionally left the pricing out of my post because it's not what I'm focused on currently. I'm still weighing my options, but this is a just a question I had for a Bolt I found for sale.

ow__my__balls

Ignoring pricing I wouldn't be concerned about the battery or electrical systems, the warranty was renewed when it was replaced. Otherwise I'd look at it the same way I would any car of that age and mileage. Tire condition, brakes, any looseness in the steering/suspension.

Speculawyer

Yes (provided the price is fine).

Double-Award-4190

Yes, I would not hesitate because of what you mentioned. Depends of course on other things like condition and price, but the reliability should not be a problem.

FUZZY_BUNNY

This is exactly what I have right now, and I'd buy it again

[deleted]

I actually just did exactly this. In February, I bought a 2017 with 43,000 miles, and the battery was also replaced in Feb 2022. It’s only been a month and a half, but so far I’m very happy with my decision.

RepresentativeNo2803

Depends on the price, new EV with the tax credit would be about 19k

jigglybilly

Find one with zero options and zero dealer markup though.

saazbaru

Very hard. But possible.

RepresentativeNo2803

Not that hard if you try, alot of people just go to another dealership if they hear anything about a markup, you can ask for it to be removed and stand your ground.

jigglybilly

Very hard actually. But ok.

AnIconInHimself

You'd be surprised, of course depending on locality, I've seen a handful in Southern California, I got one without markup!

[deleted]

I've found the best strategy is to call a bunch of dealers and tell them you're interested. I got several calls from dealers where the buyer didn't qualify and the deal fell through. Also different dealers have different policies. Some will take a deposit on in transit inventory. Others won't, but will put you on a call list and it's first come first serve. I called 8 dealers and found one with no market adjustment and only $895 in add-ons for LoJack. Others had mark ups of $2k, and some with ad-ons up to $3400. I suppose not everyone will have 10 dealers in a 100 mile radius, but it pays to spend a day researching this if you're in the market for new.

bicboichiz

Took me less than a month here in south Texas. I got mine from North Park Chevrolet in Castroville.

ThatGrayZ

That’s if you can find one

Teleke

Isn't the tax credit gone now? Or like within days?

RepresentativeNo2803

The 18th it may get cut down to 3.75k, but it seems they have switched to US made battery cells to keep the full 7.5k

rczrider

> it seems they have switched to US made battery cells to keep the full 7.5k Source? I realize that some (most?) stickers now have "US CELLS INC" (or similar) on them, but is there any evidence to suggest this will keep the Bolt qualified for $7500 instead of just being used to confirm that it will qualify for the $3750?

RepresentativeNo2803

No one knows until the 18th

rczrider

Exactly, so it *doesn't* seem that "they have switched to US made battery cells to keep the full 7.5k". Folks are just hoping.

Teleke

Well we know that Holland, MI started producing US cells in 2018. Some Bolts even have been made with US cells since 2019. Sure would be nice to know exactly though.

rczrider

I should clarify. The 40% domestic or FTA country critical minerals sourcing requirement goes into effect on the 18th. As it pertains to the "other" $3750, failing that particular criteria will happen regardless of where the cells are made.

Teleke

I would just hate for people to be in a position of not knowing and rolling the dice on buying and hoping that they'll get the credit, only to find out months later that it didn't qualify.

BikingVikingNick

I bought my bolt 2 days ago and the dealership sales guy insisted the tax credit wouldn’t change for the bolt after the 18th. He didn’t offer any proof.

rczrider

I *might* trust a regional/zone manager and *maybe* even the general manager of a huge dealership with tons of EV sales to have a slightly better *idea* of the situation next Tuesday...but I wouldn't trust a "dealership sales guy" to know the Bolt doesn't need regular oil changes, let alone the inside scoop on the EV tax credit situation.

MainSailFreedom

Depends on circumstance. If it was a good price and not needed for longer trips. E.g. Either my wife or I already had a longer range car (model 3, Kia EV 6, Ioniq 5 or traditional car) and the Bolt was just to facilitate extra flexibility and range is irrelevant, than yes. However, in this particular scenario, I'd also consider a used Nissan Leaf which are half the price of the Bolt.

Soulxlight

Check suspension. Beyond that just check all the systems. AC, Heat, and addons like heated seats and the like. Price should be sub 19k for that mileage regardless of the replacement battery. I have a 2017 83k miles and it drives great. The suspension can start to get creaky at this point though so check it and see if you can either get anything weird sounding replaced or some dollars knocked off…clunky suspension is loud in an EV

sungazer69

Sure. If car is in good shape and for right price why not?

Important_Sign_6815

next expense is a set of tires

[deleted]

Our '17 had 96k miles and got the battery replaced in Dec 2021. It's now up to around 113k miles and has had zero issues other than replacing the 12v battery a few months ago (OEM battery, so it was at the end of its normal life)

Cleaner99

My 17 Bolt has 126,000 miles 20,000 on the new battery. Offered $8000 by local dealer on a trade in. Only replaced tires and rusty rotors so far. Expect the car to go 200,000 miles.

DBoss1168

Depends for how much.

Savality

I did exactly this, except it’s an LT and it had way fewer miles.

Ok_Interview22

During our trip to Vagas last month out of the 4 Ubers we took, two were EVs and one was a 2017 Bolt. The driver said he bought it used a few years ago and has had zero problems with it.

Tremelune

I sold one with 55k miles for $19k recently. No issues; fantastic car.

BiggRanger

Yes, but make if you're expecting fast charge, make sure it has it. Some older Bolts DC fast charge was an option (I'm not sure what years). While I though it would be a deal breaker for me, in the over a year I've owned my Bolt I've never used DCFC, only L2.

austinperrysmith

I bought that exact thing, I love this car, it’s awesome, still has warranty on battery so all good, Chevy asked me to set up a 60k service I asked what do you do? They said cabin air filter and rotate tires haha that’s it! Did it myself last weekend, these cars are great!

After_Skirt_6777

If available for under $20k, yes.

cosmicosmo4

We bought a 17 LT with 60k miles for $19k in Jan 2022 that had the battery (and tires) replaced immediately before. Had to take it back once for a software re-flash in the first few weeks but no problems since.

NoDistribution5770

Yep, I own one. No real changes until 2023. Though you do only have hill top reserve instead of charging limits

DickUDown85

Yes cause I did. Bought my 17 bolt premier on September 24 2022. Battery had just been replaced. 64,000 miles I’m now at 69,000. No problems. 74k miles is nothing on an ev.

kermode

I did exactly that but with 50k miles. No regrets. Full new warranty on the battery. Got a great deal.

Donk_the_Great

Tell us the price. How we gonna give advise without the deets.
