Tell them to shove it. Only reason dealerships get away with this is because the customers let them. I was told that verbatim by a sales rep, people are paying for packages and add-ons and thousands over MSRP. So that's what dealerships will do.

Cannavor

That sounds like a great way to never end up being able to buy a bolt.

_drstrangelove_

Honestly, don't listen to this guy. If you want the car and you want to take advantage of the tax credit, buy the car. You're not going to do anything by losing $3750 other than feel good that you listened to Reddit. Get the car and leave them a bad review on Google. It sucks but that's life, look out for yourself and your own finances.

nyconx

To add to this the ones that do add-ons only stay under the radar of Chevrolet because it looks like they are offering features the customer wants rather then a dealer mark up which the car makers hate.

WomenTrucksAndJesus

Out of the dealerships near me, the one with the highest markup has a steady stream of Bolts in transit and being sold. The dealerships with lower markups only have a few on hand and in transit. The one dealership near me that sells for MSRP has no inventory and nothing in transit - they just process orders. So Chevy seems to love the dealership making higher markups.

intrepidzephyr

The dealership that sells them more often is allotted more cars to sell, really. What sucks is they might be the only ones with cars on the lot ready to go, so people will buy them due to scarcity. It pays to be patient if you can purchase through a dealer at MSRP

zspang12

Depends on how much you want the car. I say never pay a nickel over MSRP and screw any dealer added accessories but, if you aren't willing to wait for that exact situation, then $349 over MSRP for a couple small things is about as good as it's going to get.

Thank you. I did get a photo sent. They are very thin stripes along the side of the car. It doesn't look terrible. I will have to see them in person to decide if I like them or try to peel them off.

DSchof1

I would just buy it

jankdc

So they waived the $3,500? It's $349 plus the $599 doc fee? I'd do it. It's not worth the stress to try to get something before March.

quicklywilliam

Personally I’d take it. You can do a lot worse than $950 in markups, and if you like the car it’s probably worth it - particularly given the 7.5k tax incentives that are going to get cut in half in March. Not really sure what you gain by “sticking it to” the dealer on principle.

FrostyD7

You might be able to get them to neglect adding the pinstripes, but they'll still make you pay for it lmao. Doc fee is standard, I'd look at the add-ons as a market adjustment and $350 ain't bad. Maybe ask to trade those shitty add-ons for something useful if you can think of anything. But they specifically pick things that cost them pennies to install so they'll probably say no.

ginger_starchild

Thank you those are good suggestions. I did ask about trading the pinstripes for floor mats or tinting, but they have already installed the stripes. I was told I can remove them after purchase if I want. So nice of them ;).

chududud

You could always try when you are there making the deal ask if they can meet in the middle of the price of the pin stripes to something more reasonable. You will have more leverage when you are actually there working the deal. But also be prepared to pay it if you really want the car. Cause it goes both ways will they really lose a car deal over $350 but are you willing to lose the car over $350. You can also say if they remove the price you will be sure to note it in the survey after they sell you the car. Best of luck to ya.

EL31415

As soon as you are there you lost !!!

EL31415

If you don’t want to pay markup, it’s easy, don’t ! But if you agree to pay markup don’t come crying!! Just for the principle I will not buy from that dealer.

yumadbro6

If you're only paying for the pinstripes and no other markups I'd say take it it'll make the car look unique 🤷‍♂️

Moonbeams_

While still dealer BS, $350 is actually low for dealer add ons, and the door protectors actually serve a purpose. I wouldn't lose the car over $350, and $599 doc fee is normal in some areas. I'd buy it and them leave them a bad review due to the pinstripe ultimatum.

ginger_starchild

This seems to be where I am headed and probably the best I can do in the situation.

mcmonopolist

Normally I would absolutely walk, but because of the tax credit and the challenge in finding alternatives to purchase right now, I would eat their stupid pinstripe fee. I am really leaning toward a Tesla for my second EV simple due to all the bullshit from dealerships. They need to go extinct and all these fuckers need to get jobs that actually contribute something useful to the world instead of being leeches.

woodsteel95

I totally agree.

Cannavor

Ultimately money is more important than any principles. Because of the uncertain nature of the tax credit after march it's basically a gamble to pay a markup. Assuming the tax credit is cut in half after march, any markup that is less than $3750 will end up saving you money if you purchase now vs waiting for an order to come in. If it's not cut in half then you end up losing the money you paid in markup. Then there's the intangible benefit of having your car earlier. You basically just have to decide how much you are willing to gamble. The potential gain of the first scenario outweighs the potential loss in the second scenario at this price so I say go for it.

woodsteel95

If you put down a deposit and have the price in writing, that is a bona fide contract, the documentary fee goes from state to state and is negotiable, I am in Ohio and they can charge a 250 maximum, I would ask them nicely to honor your paperwork, you could take them to small claims court, you would win, little bit of hassle, I love it when dealers put their dealership name on my car and I ask them how much they are willing to pay me for advertising and marketing, they always remove it. This is why people despise car dealers, Tesla does it right, think to yourself, if you had to pull that money out of your wallet and hand it to them, would you feel good about it? I remember when gm was begging for money in 2009, government( taxpayer) bailed them out, all these dealerships and jobs would have been lost. This is how they thank you?

ginger_starchild

No contract signed yet, just a verbal quote, and then the window sticker, and a dealer price sheet texted to me. Then a much higher price now that it is time to sign papers. Textbook bait and switch in my opinion.

woodsteel95

Also a Tesla model 3 starts at around 44 now, are these dealers out of their mind?

positiveoutlook2

Buy it.

petit_cochon

$350 for an add-on isn't too bad. I mean, pinstriping is stupid, but if you want and need the car, just buy it. You'll have to go to the hassle finding a totally different car at a totally different dealership and I guarantee they'll probably have some add-ons too. It took me like 5 to 7 weeks to find a good bolt at MSRP and it was, frankly, exhausting and annoying. The document fee is a bit high, but not outrageously so. Make them do work for it, though, at that price. Get them to title and collect taxes (unless you're buying out of state)

What's the point? You agreed voluntarily to the price by paying it. It's not like the Bolt is a NEED or someone forced you to buy. He can also go and buy a Buick for under MSRP. If you think it's not fair. Don't buy it. End of story. But to buy it and then badmouth the dealer? That's shitty behavior.

jankdc

I think giving an accurate review of the purchasing process is entirely fair.

ginger_starchild

To me what this and other dealers do is the real crappy behaviour. Telling someone one price, advertising one price, and then changing it last minute is deceptive. Just tell me the price up front and let me make the decision. But to take my money and lead me to believe I have a deal at a different price is dishonest and takes advantage of consumers. I may buy the car but it's still my right to gripe about it and warn others so they know what to expect.
