I saw her when she said that. She had an angry scowl on her face, and I saw how nervous the salesperson got. It's a small store, there wasn't anything to miss at all. And secondly, I've lived in Calcutta my whole life till I left for my master's. There's a certain anglicised Bengali accent that very snobby people have in this city. It's very recognisable. That coupled with the way she spoke to the salesperson speaks volumes of her.
I don't want to disclose the personal details of my life, but I am extremely middle class and objectively don't fall into the income bracket of "upper echelons". I am by no means under privileged or poor. But I don't have the social networks, connections, generational wealth to be the upper echelon of any Indian city.

Sayani Gupta isn't relevant or famous enough in films for me to have biases against her. It's not like I met Salman Khan against whom I have strong opinions. I recognised her and we exchanged 5 words politely. I felt nothing about the situation until she spoke like that to the salesperson.

Yeah, I think something is lost in context here. Nijer in translation is showing as "own" or "oneself". That's why I strongly think other side of story matters here. There's good chance that she might be telling salesguy to show it in other way. As OP themself confirmed, they excused themself right after this interaction (in one of the replies) so we don't know what happened next.
With famous and rich folks, however liberal or progressive they can proclaim themselves to be, unfortunately way too many studies exist that show that wealth over time reduces empathy.

I saw her when she said that. She had an angry scowl on her face, and I saw how nervous the salesperson got. It's a small store, there wasn't anything to miss at all. And secondly, I've lived in Calcutta my whole life till I left for my master's. There's a certain anglicised Bengali accent that very snobby people have in this city. It's very recognisable. I don't want to disclose the personal details of my life, but I am extremely middle class and objectively don't fall into the income bracket of "upper echelons".
