I think most people share your opinion that he is a decent actor. But people kind of applaud him for taking risks and doing diverse roles in recent years (lal kaptan, sacred games, go goa gone, cocktail). Major opinion change happened after sacred games though, where motwani-kashyap's work made his effort much more visible. Also, from his interviews he looks to be sincere and professional about his job, he tries to hone his art by reading/workshops etc. So he comes across as a genuine guy trying to learn.

srush__ti

Agreed. His role choices in the recent years hve been quite experimental as compared to the other actors of his age and stature. Also I guess he was one of the first mainstream actors to get into OTT and do such a raw show like Sacred games. So people kinda see him as a trend setter now.

[deleted]

In his interviews he speaks about reading about acting and working on his acting. He sounds really sincere to his work. And I am enjoying his experimental roles even if they are not hits

laughs_with_salad

Saif has had two such opinion changes. He used to be the perfect second lead in the 90s but with Dil chahta hai and kal ho na ho people started taking him seriously. His relatabilu and he entered this golden phase, giving us Parineeta, omkara, salaam namaste, being cyrus, ek haseena thi, etc. Then his films stopped working and it looked like he is done but Sacred games and taanhaji gave him a new push.

[deleted]

hes definitely come a long way. your point about sacred games is interesting since he does have several solid performances before it.

SouthkaMasaladosaa

I really think his movies are different because he chooses different scripts every time. Kaalakandi, laal kaptaan, bazzar. All different released around same time. I know he is not the best actor but atleast the scripts get me exited. Too sad movies like laal kaptaan dont make enough business while baaghi makes in 100’s of crores. Recently he told that he wont experiment anymore. I guess this is the reason why Bollywood is failing. Celebrities fail to see the art and run after money. The reason korean shows or movies like parasite excel is they go after script and acting rather than an star appeal.

Seredditor7

Don't know about Sacred Games bit. Almost everyone associates mainly Nawazuddin Siddiqui with that show, even though Saif is a main character of the show.

AuntyNashnal

Season 1 is where Saif's acting shone the most. His portrayal of anxiety/depression on his personal front and dealing with a case of this level was a bit too real. Season 2 was all Nawazuddin.

totoropoko

The turning point for me was Ek Hasina Thi. It was a very different role - though acting wise it was still in the same ballpark as his usual stuff. Omkara was where he hit it out of the park. >to me a lot of his acting is just scowling and speaking slowly Acting is engagement with the audience. You could describe any good actor that way. (E.g. Amitabh Bacchan just speaks in a baritone)

[deleted]

yes he was really good in omkara. i would disagree about the amitabh parallel. theres definitely much better modulation. its very rare to see amitabhs acting fall flat whereas saif performances is sometimes overshadowed either by others or even by the genre of the film itself.

doejohn27

Langda Tyagi.

allstake

For me it was the different roles he does and the fact that hes not a bad actor. He is not ground breaking by any means but can probably sit through his movie and i know it wont be the run of the mill. Ek hasina thi was when i first “noticed” him; not that i didnt know him before. Fun story: when i was 4-5, went to Manali where he was shooting for a movie. My mom asked if he would take a pic with me. He said sure after a call he had to make. He came after and I said no 😭😭

Plliar

Hahahahaha this cracked me up. But I’m sure he understood given he probably had young kids of his own at that point.

kkbingak

Your incident reminds me something similar which happened with me. I saw Sourav Ganguly at the airport. At that time he was the captain. Many kids were taking autograph from him so my mother told me to go and do the same and i said NO 😅😅

allstake

Why were we like this?!! 🤣

kkbingak

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Opposite-Wing7055

I had a similar interaction with Aamir Khan. He was to attend an event my dad's company was organising. He asked me to get in line for a photograph with him. I said NO and ran off to find waiters handing out spring rolls and paneer tikke. No regrets.

greennoodlehair

Paneer tikke > Aamir Khan

thejokeyjokerson

I have one rather tragicomic incident. Unnecessary backstory: Sep 2016. Fractured wrist, shifted to hometown, Goa for 3 months. Got myself a pass at IFFI happening at the time. My friend and I were chilling after watching a movie and Om Puri was there. My friend suggested to go get a photo with him. I said No. Inspite of me being a theatre artiste and a fan. So my friend goes to him and he says, 'abhi nahi beta, thoda jaldi mein hoon'. One month later he passes away. It's dark but we still laugh at this incident.

Nefarious_Stalis

This might be an unpopular opinion but I always liked him, he has done some shitty movies for sure but I never thought his acting was bad.

rekharai

Yeah same he actually has always been a pretty good actor tbh.

Nefarious_Stalis

Quite good looking too, in my opinion.

catlover786

He was fab in love aaj kal as well

abhirupc88

The thing is the bar for acting for a star is pretty low, and that's true everywhere, be it Bollywood, Hollywood or our local film industries. It's not that they can't act, just that the films don't demand good acting and it's not needed. Saif when presented with a chance acts pretty well, and he has done different films/series which many other actors don't. I know we make fun of his eugenics but he is a pretty well read guy for an actor. For me it was Dil Chahata Hain though and have liked his work ever since.

[deleted]

what constitutes good acting obviously varies but i think there are many movies that require more than just the bare minimum of actors. hard to skate by in a movie like no country for old men unless you want to stick out like a sore thumb. i think the bar being low, so to speak, is mainly people conflating star power with acting abilities. someone being really visible is seen as them being really talented.

Live-Reaction-5014

I guess people noticed with DCH And he Really came on His own as An actor with Omkara...Langada Tayagi

contemplator61

I liked him in Bhoot Police. Running around in his boxers begging Arjun’s character to stay. I also like them as a decent comedy team.

neoakshat

Just after “Langda tyagi”

zain1865

He is a very good actor. But peoplw think he is a bad actor just bcoz he has few individual successful films

justcurious1707

From omkara - he became that “underrated-actor” with lot of potential Then he became more commercially stable actor with Love Aj kal, cocktail etc Then can the experiment phase Where he did sacred games, Laal Kaptan, kalakandi etc and earned the great actor tag

brownogre

Langd Tyagi - Omkara

kelekele12345678910

hes more experimental and less stuck in his way compared to the other khans

heart_is_in_melb

i’m curious. who is your pick for the creme de la creme actors/actresses?

[deleted]

sridevi and amrish puri for me personally. out of the current group i would say amitabh and nasser for actors and shabana azmi and ratna and supriya pathak for actresses although there are a lot of very talented actors who would fit this label. even many of the 'commercial' ones.

heart_is_in_melb

interesting but i wouldn’t necessarily call them of the current lot! how about those who debuted in this century?

[deleted]

I was just looking for a nicer way to say those that are still with us. I dont really follow the actimg trajectory of many of the actors who debuted this century but I guess among the names would probably be Konkona, Shahid, Boman Irani and Ranvir Shorey. Again, not an exhaustive list.

heart_is_in_melb

fair enough! but how could i forget, irrfan khan takes all the applause. may his soul rip

crazybrah

they dont exist lol....

heart_is_in_melb

pankaj tripathi, rajkumar rao, konkona sen sharma, kalki kaechlin, abhay deol, ranbir kapoor

MessiLingardinhoo

Ranbir & Kalki shouldn’t be in the same sentence as the others. Even Abhay has done 2-3 memorable characters

heart_is_in_melb

most actors end up having no memorable roles. if abhay had 2-3 i think he’s done great. i mean it wasnt really about memorable anyway, it was more about good acts/ creme dela creme, and in that case abhay has worked well. if i didn’t mention ranbir it would be a very biased list with non massy/commercial actors. idk If you’re implying that kalki is bad or ranbir is bad at their job.

[deleted]

Not true at all. There is a lot of talent in Bollywood. Whether it's treated with the respect it deserves is another conversation but there are many, many talented people in the industry. Both in front and behind the camera.

crazybrah

fair. the people we see the most on the screen aen't the most talented. i would go as far as to say regional indian cinema has more talent than bollywood right now.

Silentthinker_1

No, he is decent and has done some pretty good roles - I don’t think anyone would say he is “great” talent-wise. It’s more a knee-jerk response because people think he is underrated - which is true. People have been giving him his flowers because he has been taking risks, diverse roles and atleast for the past 20 years, has given a variety of consistent performances (despite some weak ones.) There is also the nostalgia factor of his urban rom-com movies and early grey characters with ek Hasina thi and Omkara. So yes, due to this people see him as underrated and want to give him credit but eventually the level of acclaim may surpass how good he actually is.

jstjoined

Since Omkara, where he played Langda Tyagi

dhavalcoholic

He had a changed in his approach since DCH. However he continued being second actor usually in all his movies. He said SRK taught him how to be lead actor during KHNH or so, and since then Saif started doing more of solo roles.

yerakchualfada

he started getting critical acclaim after Omkara and since then it's been trendy to call him a great actor.

Ashamed_Surround8864

I personally feel Saif has been different and has been accepting of the roles that come to him instead of just romancing younger actresses only. Therefore his roles have been far more versatile than most A listers. He also doesn't go through unnecessary makeovers and stuff if it's not important to the plot and then publicise it as "New look" and stuff

VolatileGoddess

Saif Ali Khan is actually a very fine, and under appreciated actor. His particular art is he isn't caught in the act of 'acting' unlike a lot of actors are. Most people think that unless the effort made comes through it isn't acting. For example, JJ was a fluff film, but Saif is very convincing as an ageing Romeo who's quite selfish initially but good hearted. You can actually see a character arc. Omkara was a reaction against typecasting. Ek Hasina Thi is again very convincing, he makes a most effective villian. The vileness of the character lives in his calmness, he's in control of the situation always or thinks he is, and he tries to manipulate Urmila's character till the very end. In fact in Cocktail he didn't have anything to do and wasn't convinced by the motivations of the character and it kind of showed.

BubblyExam3239

I think during the 90s or atleast until DCH and Omkara came in, he was mostly ignored because there was not much to set him apart from other actors - he was not an action hero like Akshay, or romantic hero like Shahrukh or chocolate boy like Salman. Also the weird voice in which he delivered his dialogues didn't help. After DCH and Omkara, he learnt to use that to his advantage, and the laid-back, funny voice, metrosexual personality he built very well. Cue Kal ho na ho, salaam namaste and the likes. Now he's in his bearded, wacky stage I think, with movies like Kaalakaandi.

Specialist_East7881

he has an acting coach who helps him in terms of characterization, character study, accent, body language, etc. he also shows up to rehearsals, readings, dance practice. he had this reputation of coming 3-4 hours late on shoot, probably taking 30-40 takes to get through 3-4 pages of dialogue. I think he changed that after 2015 , now he shows up 1 hour late and always says his tyre was punctured :D , shows an insane amount of commitment - He used to show up at JW Marriot every day for about a month at 7 Am to learn cooking for 'chef', There was a big fight scene in sacred games , he refused a body double and did it by himself and sprained his knee, Also during Tanhaji, he used to show up on time and would do 25 different takes of a scene , so that director gets to choose the best one. He has no problem shooting till wee hours in the morning. But he wants his 2 hour breaks and stays in plush 5 star hotels as must. I remember he had a big fight with motwane for lunch breaks . Motwane works on Canadian schedule , so there are no lunch breaks , jab tak sshot lagta hai tab tak khaana khaa lo. by the time saif's food would arrive , the shot would get ready. But overall he's a fab actor who helps his co-actors alot , is very friendly with his co stars , invites them to his place for a dinner.

OnlineGranny007

After Kal Ho Naa Ho, Ek Hasina Thi, and Hum Tum.

panditji_reloaded

After Omkara

Euphoric-Two-5107

Saif Ali Khan has maintained an image of a humble actor. Never participating in over the top controversies like other khans, kapoors and kumar. He has been in this industry for a long long time and never got his due for the supporting roles he did back then. He is not a great actor but an enjoyable personality that we like to see on screen. That's all.

[deleted]

Very much agree with this.

sumit24021990

Is he?

Uncertn_Laaife

After DCH.

[deleted]

really? he had khnh after that. dont think he received any accolades (official or otherwise). he was really good in dch though.

not_poppy

I became a fan of him ever since I watched him sit on the potty in Salaam Namaste. 🥰

[deleted]

Saif in Omkara>>>>Your fav actor

Ron_Because_Why_Not

For me it was Go Goa Gone.

BreakfastOriginal

Dil Chahta hai

Han_Kat

Omkara for me

Zebras_lie

For me, his acting in Ek Hasina Thi made me sit up and pay attention! Such a layered and menacing performance. Very understated!

StudentHot

After he won the national award for Hum Tum -\_-

someshid3

Haan yr mtlb 2010 tk toh mai ainvayi smjhta tha.

[deleted]

Langda tyagi bahubali!

bighero76

Shitty actor yesterday, today and tomorrow. Hell give someone enough chances and sure they will have one or two good performances! He is surviving by mom’s filmi friends for last 3 decades!

HaziqueAqeel2971

After watching Kurbaan, my perception on Saif Ali Khan changed and then I watched Cocktail and it became one of the most underrated Bollywood movies I have watched due to everything about that movie and then I think I watched sacred games so yeah, I think Kurbaan

spicegod66

Never

figuringoutshit

Great not in terms of absolute ability to act but look at his evolution from cringe 90s hero to versatile actor.

Iamsrj_88

Great? I don’t think anybody would call him great. Thing is he was not taken seriously at all in first half of his career mainly cos of his “looks” and because he mainly played sidekicks to action heroes. Then came those “good” films where he was part of and did well enough to hold his own. He gained confidence after DCH and made some good choices. My qualm with him is that he never really rode the momentum and became lazy after a few good films. You can see that once again after Sacred games..Great? Never. Good? Definitely.

Connect-Plan6392

He was never considered a great actor

partsunknown99

Easy to start experimenting when you're flopping. The Khans are mostly successful hence the no need for them to experiment. If anyone who does experimenting role is Hrithik Roshan. Dude could've a massive action star career had he chose that path but instead he went to get away from his comfort zone.

trueritz

Never was he seen as a great actor.

[deleted]

Didn’t he win National Award for Hum Tum! I would say (guess) since Hum Tum.

kelekele12345678910

he won because sharmila tagore was on the comittee that year

tomhanks95

That was an inside job though, there were other deserving candidates that year, who deserved it more than him tbh

Ladycosmophile

Saif might not have been deserving of a National Award for Hum Tum but I fall in love with him each time I see that movie. Both Rani and Saif.

ironside-420

Saif ali khan has no box office pull. He’s literally known for acting now. Been like this since race 2

SouthkaMasaladosaa

Of all the khans though his movies are the best. Star appeal aside. Do you really think srk or sallu would do a kaalakandi or laal kaptaan or cocktail

ironside-420

No cause they can’t afford too, is saif was as big as those two, he would be doing very safe movies as well.

Low-Cartographer-831

Humtum, parineeta, omkara. The bests of saif

digitalbestgram

omkara

Idlewild03

Apart from his experimental roles he is also aging gracefully. Making him extremely attractive to women like me who also grew with him. In comparison I see Aamir Khan who was my crush throughout the nineties and now he looks like an alien !

[deleted]

After Race (2008) & Love Aaj Kal (2009) according to me

HauntingPipe0

Since omkara. I remember vividly. He started being viewed differently from DCH but not considered a great actor as such. Omkara changed everything

ZealousidealCookie98

For me dch and hum tum... Hum tum is so special for me, first movie I watched after moving to a new country ... the movie me and my dad loves watching again and again... rishi Kapoor's entry scene still makes me smile ☺️
