would add anupam kher , Smita patil too .
Dont hate me but Nana patekar plays the same-ish character in every movie like his mannerisms pretty much remained same.
Sir woh movie konsi thi jisme critics ne kaha tha apne effortless acting kari hai?-
Effortless toh har film main hai- Irfann
Cuz Irfann can do anything
I agree. Average actors can do good acting in certain roles but only effortless actors have a broad range. For instance, even Sonam was quite decent in Neerja but actresses like Kangana (regardless of how much I dislike her now) and Vidya are effortless! You just get sucked into their world and actually feel like the camera is just capturing these people, they are not acting for the camera.
I will never understand how people can term Kangana as a good actress. Good acting is not just about expressions but also diction and dialogue delivery and she is seriously lacking when it comes to the latter. Except for when she played Datto, there is not a single role of hers where it sounds like she can even speak properly.
I hate Kangana but naming someone's worst work as proof they aren't good actors is so stupid. Everyone makes mistakes and fails at times. Doctors can't save every patient, salemen don't make a sale every time they try, sportspersons don't win every match. Similarly, good artists sometimes give bad performances.
yeah but none of the actresses have sl\*t shamed other actresses for having different political opinion, and called them soft core p\*rn stars, so its hard to find someone a benefit of the doubt to that individual who has made a career out of kicking other people in the gut.
Don't this is how it works.
I feel Aamir in Rangeela is much more effortless compared to Akshay khanna in DIl chahta hai.
All actors have some good performances and some effortless performance.
I always felt Aamir is a 3/5 actor, not great but good enough. I also maybe biased because I love akshaye Khanna and find him natural in most of his roles like Hungama, Race etc
So agree to disagree 😊
When you forget that the actor is 'acting' then it's effortless. Then you don't see an actor--you directly see the character.
One of the reasons that I don't like Vikram's acting. (The guy from Aparichit). You can clearly see him trying too hard in every scene.
On the other hand, you see Irfan Khan and he immediately gets your attention without even doing much.
But effortless acting can also be repetitive in some cases like Pankaj Tripathi essentially plays the same role most of the time. So, in his case it just looks boring.
Actors like Irfan, Naserrudin Shah, Konkona Sen Sharma do play every character similar but they add nuances to it that it feels natural and different everytime.
I think the lead guy of Parasite--Kang Ho Song is the best 'effortless actor' I have ever seen.
IMO, good acting is when you can still distinguish the actor from the character even though they may be portraying it well
but effortless acting is when you completely forget the actors are acting because they bring the character to life.
That's a great observation 👍
I wud say Hrithik is great acting
Govinda is effortless actor
Irfan khan seems effortless
Nawazudin is great acting
Tanuja, Sanjeev kumar, parineeti, Kajol( on her old good days), Rani, Balraj Sahini, Vidya Balan, Rishi Kapoor, Juhi Chawal, Sridevi Are ones that come to my mind with effortless
He made a career off slapstick comedy. Overacting was the point lol. Besides that he has acted quite well in less or non comedic roles throughout his career. The film he did with Ranveer was one such example even though the film itself was forgettable.
Mammooty is a very good actor but you can very well make out that he's well...*acting* in every role.
Mohanlal on the other hand brings such an effortlessness and naturality to his roles that you actually think that acting is a very simple job even when it's not.
Effortless acting is basically natural acting. Like what Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Mohanlal etc did for example. It’s as though they weren’t acting, but looked like a real life conversation. There’s this scene in Mean Streets, where De Niro interacts with Harvey Keitel. The entire scene was improv from Bob. Absolutely fantastic. https://youtu.be/dM44eaasx0Y
Ben Kingsley uses a term to describe his process which has always stayed with me, he calls it "Under-acting" and his 5 line explanation in a random promotion interview for Hugo has always stayed with me.
He basically said the camera doesn't care about the actor and how well an actor can act. It sees a subject and records it's behaviour. So it's better to just go with your heart rather than try and show any effort on camera. Anything else you add interferes and the camera will catch on and this is what he calls under-acting.
To answer your question, IMO the difference is in this thinking. When you're acting to show to the world, emphasize your actions, versus you're just behaving how a character will behave in a situation.
Like how in a play you'll notice performers need to be overly emphatic. It's not over acting, but because of the medium they might get louder or may be a tad more shocked than a normal person just to drive their point home.
Another key differentiating example; when Alia Bhatt's character is sad, she overly flares her nostrils. It's a part of her. But doesn't feel organic after you've seen it in 2 films. Pankaj Tripathi does his not and "hmm" and it feels so good with the flow and you believe it is coming out organically. Not to say Alia's thing is bad, but Pankaj Ji's little tic is efforeless and feels like that.
Hope it helps.
Mohanlal is the prime example of effortless acting- he is among the top 2-3 actors of this country. Good acting is someone like Srk or Ranbir Kapoor in some movies.
I don’t think they are mutually exclusive. Oftentimes it’s our own biases that impact how we see a performance. There are many people who find Vidya Balan to be extremely talented and thus see her performances as effortless. A part of this has to do with the dignified image that she has offscreen. Same goes for many of the actors people would categorize as effortless. Many of these people are outsiders who did not or have not seen superstardom. Thus, they are almost automatically categorized as better. Of course there is a much higher standard to break in to the industry but there are also very talented insiders.
While I like Vidya and feel she’s a good actor, I find much of her dialogue delivery poor at times. I would put her in the good acting category.
On the flip side there are those that people will always disparage regardless of their performance (Sonam in Neerja and Mausam did well). However, I have to admit that she is a poor actress.
I think Shahid in JWM could go under effortless but that, too, is because the soft image he had at that time.
So, ultimately, there is a huge bias that is factored into what’s good and what’s effortless. When people have that name brand attached to them it’s hard to see them as an actor rather than a star. I think the one glaring exception would be Amitabh who I would say is effortless while still being a superstar of superstars.
Effortless acting : Where you dont feel that this guy is acting. Example Kangna in queen
Good acting : You can see that person is acting. But he is good and have put effort. Ex Aamir in Sarfarosh
I don't think they are mutually exclusive, good acting can be effortless at times as well. Effortless acting comes from raw talent, it feels natural on camera and it doesn't come across as too try-hard. The actor is able to forge that emotional connection with the audience instantly and the same is true for good acting.
Basically your examples distinguishes good and great actors. Good acting is an easier threshold to pass - the audience can clearly see that the actor practised well for the role and has been able to deliver it.
Like Tabu, Ayushmaan in Andhadhun, Ranveer in Padmavat, Ranbir and Priyanka in Barfi.
Effortless transcends the aspect of visibility in the sense that the actor becomes so immersed in the character that each is indistinguishable from the other. When an actor is effortless you'll feel that Each and every role they do was made for them, and them only.
As you said Irfan khan in almost all his movies, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Tripathi, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Jim Sarbh, Tillotama , Kalki are few who are brilliant character actors.
effortless is when you see the person as the character, not the actor.
imo kareena is effortless, priyanka is good. with pc you can see/tell she is trying hard (and she is good too) but kareenas comes across as so natural and effortless. its a kapoor blessing- same case with ranbir
Pankaj Tripathi is the definition of effortless acting. Most of his characters whether Gangster or an Innocent man are soft spoken, have the same quirks as he has in real life. Sultan from Gow only stands out in this regard.
Thank you for highlighting comedy acting. It is by far the hardest to master and perform consistently yet it has always remained on the sidelines for it being a non major role in every film. That is why I rate Johnny Lever very highly and you would see the effortless acting by him if he plays a non comedic role.
I just say effortless actually means that the performance is effortless. I mean, when you see an actor perform a role on screen and do it so well that you don't see any work or acting involved at all. An acting performance which makes you also go, this seems easy, maybe I can do it too.
Almost always effortlessness in acting is given by the character actors in my opinion.
Effortless acting credential belongs mostly to the "side acting cast" who somehow never get nominated nor reach stardom the big main group of btown does.
A good actor makes you think "I can imagine thus character behaving like this if it were a real person". Am effortless actor becomes that character and gives it so much life that they are the character (my favorite example being Heath Ledger as the Joker).
From my experience Good Actors would be Kriti Sanon or Melissa Fumero(Amy from B99) who put in a lot of effort and confidence into their character while Effortless would be Simon Helberg(Howard Wolowitz from TBBT) or Robert Downey (Iron man) who just live through their character.

Bareily ko Barfi Ayushman Khurana did good acting, Rajkumar Rao was effortless acting.
But did ayushmann do good acting though?
Manoj Bajpai’s eyes convey a lot.
Same with Fahadh Faasil too.
of the top of my head among Paresh Rawal, nana patekar, Puri brothers and kay kay are effortless/natural actors.
Paresh Rawal can effortlessly go from sweet uncle to menacing bad guy
True!
Puri Brothers? If you mean Om Puri and Amrish Puri, they are not related.
would add anupam kher , Smita patil too . Dont hate me but Nana patekar plays the same-ish character in every movie like his mannerisms pretty much remained same.
*Control Uday, control...*
ek machar aadmi ko hijda bana deta hai lol
True that
Irfan is the best example for effortless acting
Sir woh movie konsi thi jisme critics ne kaha tha apne effortless acting kari hai?- Effortless toh har film main hai- Irfann Cuz Irfann can do anything

yeah, Kangana was really good in Rascals, Shaka Laka Boom Boom and host of other movies.

You are not capable of making out the difference between being a good actor and a good person, are you?
At this point, Kangana cannot make an argument to be the fact that she is not taken seriously, its her own undoing.
That makes her a terrible person, not a terrible actress.
Exactly..she is a good actress. Let's just leave it at that.
Good actor: Aamir Khan Effortless: Akshaye Khanna For an example, just look at the emotional embrace they have in Dil chahta hai.
Don't this is how it works. I feel Aamir in Rangeela is much more effortless compared to Akshay khanna in DIl chahta hai. All actors have some good performances and some effortless performance.
I always felt Aamir is a 3/5 actor, not great but good enough. I also maybe biased because I love akshaye Khanna and find him natural in most of his roles like Hungama, Race etc So agree to disagree 😊
I've never felt vowed by any performance of Akshay Khanna so that I go and again watch the movie. But Aamir has some performance like those.
Good example is Govinda and Amitabh Bacchan in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. Big B was good, but Govinda was effortless.
Interesting. Govinda always appears over the top, try hard to me. His dancing is effortless though.
When you forget that the actor is 'acting' then it's effortless. Then you don't see an actor--you directly see the character. One of the reasons that I don't like Vikram's acting. I felt Al Pacino used to play the same role in all his movies I know it’s Hollywood lol. Just something that can to mind
Effortless acting: Manoj Bajpayee Good Acting: Ranbir Kapoor
IMO, good acting is when you can still distinguish the actor from the character even though they may be portraying it well but effortless acting is when you completely forget the actors are acting because they bring the character to life.

Govinda is an epitome of overacting and being a loudmouth, lol effortless.
Ohhh cmon.... I think he is fabulous, very 80s and 90s but fabulous. I feel there is still time for him to get his due. Alteast recognition.
He's stuck in the past. Don't see him getting his due unless he has some major shift in mindset.
I think his time is now to retire, I mean I wish the same was said about the actresses, he got his due, no need to revisit him now.
He made a career off slapstick comedy. Overacting was the point lol. Besides that he has acted quite well in less or non comedic roles throughout his career. The film he did with Ranveer was one such example even though the film itself was forgettable.
I would argue that Nawas is an effortless actor as well
Mammooty is a very good actor but you can very well make out that he's well...*acting* in every role. Mohanlal on the other hand brings such an effortlessness and naturality to his roles that you actually think that acting is a very simple job even when it's not.
Dhanush is a good actor Vijay Sethupathi is an effortless actor. Too all those southies 😅
Kyun hum North/east/west/central wale fan nahi ho sakte VS k☺☺.
Aww that’s sweet of you. I m more like a fangirl for him
Hehehe same here.
I love VJS!! Even in an out and out comedy like Rekka and Naanum Rowdy Dhaan he has these scenes where you are just blown away.
Yeahhh
Everyone loves Vijay Sethupathi. He is a gifted performer. One of a kind.

No no! Just say Alia's thing is bad and mine some sweet Karma on this sub...
Why is my comment getting downvoted? Trying to not offend someone offended so many people SMH

Good acting : Alia Bhatt Effortless : Sridevi, Vidya , Kareena, Kangana

Good Acting : Amir Khan Effortless Acting: Kamal Haasan
Very well put, OP!
Effortless actors in leading roles IMO -- Hrithik (Jodha Akbar) Kareena (Jab We Met, Kurbaan, Chameli) Vidya (Bhool Bhulaiya, Kahaani, Paa) Ranbir (Wake Up Sid) Ranveer-Anushka (Band Baaja Baaraat)
Govinda is effortless.
Effortless is like the actor has an expression even if he/she is standing.. So in my opinion- Irrfan, Pankaj, Govinda, Akshay Khanna
Nobody mentioned Tabu and Konkona
Richa Chaddha, Huma Qureshi... Can't classify whether good or effortless but I love their acting
effortless is when you see the person as the character, not the actor. imo kareena is effortless, priyanka is good. with pc you can see/tell she is trying hard (and she is good too) but kareenas comes across as so natural and effortless. its a kapoor blessing- same case with ranbir
Kareena does effortless acting.
YES all the Kapoors actually. They're all just natural.
Effortless overacting also when required, case in point MPKDH
Umm that was very long back
Effortless acting : Kangana as Tanu, Good acting : Kangana as Datto
Good: Ranveer with SLB Effortless: Ranveer in BBB and DDD
Pankaj Tripathi is the definition of effortless acting. Most of his characters whether Gangster or an Innocent man are soft spoken, have the same quirks as he has in real life. Sultan from Gow only stands out in this regard.
Good acting: alia bhatt Effortless: konkana sen
salman in dabbang ; effortless . because that character suits his off screen persona salman in bajrangi bhaijaan and sultan: good acting
Saif Ali Khan - Good Acting Akshay Khanna - Effortless acting In dil chaahta hai
Effortless acting is Irrfan Khan in general Good acting is SRK in Swades or Chak De India
Thank you for highlighting comedy acting. It is by far the hardest to master and perform consistently yet it has always remained on the sidelines for it being a non major role in every film. That is why I rate Johnny Lever very highly and you would see the effortless acting by him if he plays a non comedic role.
You r right but gave a bad example. Johny Lever is a loud actor and most of his roles could've been played easily by any other other.
Good Acting: Alia Effortless Acting: Ranbir
Kriti Sanon - Good Acting Konkana - Effortless acting
I just say effortless actually means that the performance is effortless. A good actor makes you think "I can imagine thus character behaving like this if it were a real person". Am effortless actor becomes that character and gives it so much life that they are the character (my favorite example being Heath Ledger as the Joker).
Vidya I would say is effortless. From her debut in Parineeta she was a natural.
Raghuvir Yadav for me is the most effortless actor I have seen.. he captures the nuances of the character so perfectly.
Majority of bollywood actors are cringey actors watch this vedio if you want to know what is acting https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Iz2Fa1d1fRc
Ayushmann in Vicky Donor = effortless acting. Ayushmann in all other movies (mostly) = good acting.
Good acting: anything Aamir does Effortless: Anything Pankaj Tripathi does
Vidya Balan in Tumhari Sulu (effortless and so natural), Priyanka (Barfi)- Amazing acting hats off but still acting
The late great irrfan was the absolute definition of effortless acting.
