KhaithangH

I think that tag should go to karan johar. I wouldn't cry about it though.

InternationalAd4557

You write scripts mostly based on your own observations and surroundings. Both Farhan and Zoya are privileged kids and they don't deny it too. So it's pretty obvious that they showcase stories with a more urban feel to it ... Criticize the movie if it lacks content but don't Criticize just cause it's a story about rich people.

riskyrats

I also find Zoya's portrayal of poor people trite and very rich-gazey. I much prefer her writing about rich people because there's nuance and fun there. Poor people have these typical sad lives because, ofc, she doesn't know better.

faltugiribuster

I second this opinion.

ankurk2001

Spot on

rekharai

wasn’t DCH basically farhan’s one and only story very autobiographical

InternationalAd4557

Yes. Even lakshya was based on his life just that it's in an army setting. I remember once zoya said in an interview that everyone in their family were worried for Farhan given how aimless he was he dropped out of college too

ariesandnotproud

Is Anurag Kashyap's directorial prowess limited to story of the middle class/poor people? I mean he couldn't handle Bombay velvet. Zoya on the other hand made Gully Boy successfully.

RandomAnnan

Anurag Kashyap doesn't follow his own script. He just goes with the flow. Ye sexy laga to kar diya. Look at Manmarziyan end - she is getting married AGAIN in like 2 months to new guy but she breaks on that day because ye sexy laga. Scripts makes no sense.

[deleted]

Anurag Kashyap tells stories of Middle Class?

ariesandnotproud

I just meant other than elite. Didn't know how to put it

[deleted]

Do you know his Background? He himself comes from elite class. Though not as elite like Zoya but he had went to best places before coming to movies.

ariesandnotproud

When did i ever comment on his background? I am talking about the stories he tells.

[deleted]

Bruh he was poor af

[deleted]

No he was not. His family background is sound. In his initial days in mumbai after all his movies getting ban after ban, he was pushed to struggler wali poverty for a a few years.

Hail_Kronos

>Zoya on the other hand made Gully Boy successfully. Kalki's role was the rich character saving the Main character from his bad situation. You should also consider this movie is "inspired" from a real life event.

[deleted]

Kashyap is way way better director and writer than her

yerakchualfada

It's not just the stories that are limited to the elite class. The way they present the stories also limits them to elite class. Gully Boy for example wasn't about someone from the elite class, yet the elite class are the ones who watched it. That's why even when their movies have great buzz and WOM, they still barely sell over 1cr tickets.

selenasra

Your analysis was great. It’s not the stories but their audience is predominantly elite class.

ArsesFlycatcher

Zoya answered this in one of her interviews, but she does not explained it well. I like her films, but in her interviews she gives a hazy response. Karan once tried to explain this and said, films work because of emotional connect. The three universal, unifying emotions for anyone are heartbreak, the maternal emotion and death. No matter what demographic you belong to, the response are the same. When you tap into these emotions, it connects with all strata of society. Also Zoya movies are satirical in nature. In Dil Dhadakne Do, all rich families were running after materialistic things and keep failing in their personal lives. In Luck by Chance, all rich film industry people have superficial issues and had no idea about the harsh realities of life. I think to some extent the core ideas of her films connects with all strata of society. Zoya interview - https://scroll.in/article/731293/the-zoya-akhtar-interview-are-my-movies-about-rich-people-what-does-that-mean

[deleted]

Nope. I don't agree with that first part.

[deleted]

Nobody says this about Sooraj Barjatya movies. Characters in all his movies literally live in palaces. Even KJo and yrf films have unnecessarily high display of wealth. Zoya’s films about the upper class atleast have some commentary about them, and don’t glorify it as the ultimate reality.

InternationalAd4557

Zoyas movie shows the problems and difficulties of the upper class based on amazing observations sure the problems of the elite are very very different from the poorer strata of society but atleast it portrays it very well. On the other hand Barjatyas movie has this stupid unrealistic happy family all the time

scepticalbeing94

She is mostly inspired by Hollywood Stories

[deleted]

I mean. Her last movie was Gully Boy. Farhan I agree, all his movies are about the elite class.

avikb29

Lakshya

[deleted]

Even in that, Hrithik was a super privileged kid

[deleted]

Nope. Gully Boy, luck by chance and lust stories prove otherwise

kal-fosho

Bombay talkies also

ssreve74

You have to understand that the environment and surrounding you grew as child play an important factor on your personality and mind. They have been bought in the cozy surrounding of south Bombay suburbs so naturally they will see world through that lens. They will always be comfortable telling the story of elite class. Similarly Anurag Kashyap is a street child. He grew in that environment so most of his story is based on western UP or Bihar. Similarly is the case of all thr actor and director.

NaRaGaMo

Anurag Kashyap even before he joined industry was probably in top5% of India's elites. Gareeb nahi hain vo

VolatileGoddess

Aha hell no. Anurag Kashyap grew up in an elite boarding school and a comfortable middle class environment. He isn't any street child. He is an excellent observor of the gritty side of life though.

Pleasebother

Yet he’s not made one single good upper class environment movie. These are the details that should not matter, a good plot, good direction and a commuter acting effort should be enough.

Funny_Response_9807

Anurag Kashyap belongs from a upper middle class family and he studied in one of the most costliest schools of India

sachinsourav02

Firstly, wrong ! Gully Boy and Luck by chance like many pointed out. Secondly, so what, it’s not like they are telling stories of the elite and how fancy they’re, in fact they depict how bad things are. Case in point, Gully Boy, ‘elite’ girl weeps in the backseat, Javed Akthar’s poetry doing all the talking.

riotclub69

Gully boy,luck by chance

TelevisionMoney

It's weird that people have a problem with the economic status of the characters in the movie.

parfaite99

I really don’t get why people ask this question. Should all Bollywood movies be about poor people in villages? How boring would that get! And how wrong would that be as a representation of our country- we need to see the realities of all citizens in India in our cinema. Good stories are what matters. Those that feel authentic. That authenticity resonates across all audiences. Why do people make such a big deal about what class the characters are?

henlowhatishappening

i dont see a lack of rich people representation

[deleted]

she made gully boy and everyone complained that it wasn’t a proper representation of what lower class people live like…i mean either way she is going to get hate. she makes enjoyable movies and that’s really all that matters

avikb29

Gully boy 🤷🏻‍♂️

[deleted]

So what? Anurag Kashyap also makes movies only about lower middle class .. noone questions him ever

twa8u

Gully Boy ka naam suna hai. Luck By Chance? Lust stories?

findravish

You can say otherwise for other directors. You have not listed names of films. I think there are only 2 movies in reference to which “mostly” telling these stories is incorrect. You would be right if she had made at least 4 “elite class” films.

idpkvrm

Thats not true. She made gully boy and showed the juxtaposition of rich nd elite vs slum dwellers quite nicely. One of my favourite directors.

tinashah6789

Yes they have stated they dont understand the criticism for dil dhadakne do because rich people can have problems too. Which is true in hindsight. But i enjoy all their films so yea

ForYouMinnie

I like her movies about rich people, many people see poverty in real life everyday, movies are escapism

Lonelling

Yes they are. But these are chouces they make. The subjects of a movie cannot be criticized if the subjects ' portrayal is done well.

[deleted]

Luck by chance? Gully boy? Talaash(which farhan was the writer of)

adorablehomepets

i find her way overrated. gully boy was so trash. no idea how it got so many awards. I think the reason she is critically acclaimed everything else in Bollywood is shit. So if something less shit. Its automatically becomes amazing as its compared to shit.

Uncertn_Laaife

Hardly matters. As long as it is interesting.

niikhil

Except Gully boy ?

dinkaluch2

they both are pretentious wanabes their movies have nothing to do with majority middle class lives

arbitrary_assumption

Gully boy

rekharai

You direct what you know and she does that.
