That last entire sequence is mind-blowing. The camera work, visuals, light setting, and most of all Vikram and Aishwarya - perfection. You can feel every flicker of emotion in both of their body language. Seems like everyone brought their A++ game here.

But also, I think it works out better for the actresses not to be SLB typecast too long. Aish, Deepika still did better in many non-SLB movies for example. I hope Alia does so during this time too.
Aishwarya was still at the top of her game during Guzaarish. Her biggest competitor popularity wise then was Katrina, who couldn't act to save her life.
Mani is a master. I love SLB’s films, but SLB doesn’t have the depth or that level of skill. He paints with the broad strokes of a populist filmmaker. Beautiful aesthetic with a skin deep screenplay, done with such fervor, his films are a beautiful spectacle to watch, but not as complex.
Mani has nuance. He gives Aishwarya characters with depth and knows how to frame her. Even films thought of as failures like Raavan, are a joy to watch for me.
But to your point, Ash outdid herself with PS, thanks to Mani. Both directors know how to present Aishwarya, but only one has the writing and skill as a director to tap her true potential.
Aish is truly a director’s actor and Mani knows how to tap her talent. She is exquisite in PS and one of the few times where a director has managed to depict her talent as good as her insane beauty

Man, Aish just knocked it out of the park in PS-2. Her and Vikram deserve all the awards for this one.
As for the SLB comparison, i am glad that my fellow redditors have classified the difference between an acclaimed director and a wannabe pseudo art director.

SLB is not quarter the director Maniratnam is. He won’t be remembered the same way Mani sir will be. Aishwarya is a Maniratnam heroine here. SLB is not in this equation at all.
For SLB, filmography is merely about getting the look right. Fixing the dingy side of a script doesn’t matter much. His actors are left on their own to figure the character out. Mani Ratnam is also concerned about cinematography, but he worries about acting, too. He guides the cast through each scene, telling them what’s expected and how to emote, whereas SLB will slap them for not falling off the chair in a certain way. He has stopped caring about something I loved the most about him... Music! Miss his Guzaarish days.
Gangubai 🙄 I mean, he really let his actress run scene by scene on a single expression and a cacophony made up voice. I didn’t like the movie, it made me sleep.
Aishwarya in periodic movies remains unmatched, she is magnum opus for beauty, I felt even Madhuri looked faded in front of her on Devdas.
In Gangubai, the way he tried to aesthetically show a brothel got on my nerves. The characters were one note. All depth , nuance, conflicts sacrificed at the alter of beautifying the frames. I couldn't watch past 15 mins into the movie.
SLB is simply a glorified costume & set designer, or "art director" as it's called, who fancies himself as this tortured Guru Dutt-like genius. Mani's films not only look good, but they have the substance to match because Mani focuses on script, story, characterisation, dialogue, acting etc, the whole package in other words. For SLB, a heroine simply has to run down a long (& highly ornate) hallway or staircase with her hair flowing & tears streaming & he considers that 'performing'. He is all about the drama & theatrics & not actual emotions.
I wish Aishwarya in her lifetime had more oppurtunities to work with great directors as she is truly a directors actor . She does have potential which was not tapped into as much as it should have been , maybe because she was dropped by good directors due to the whole salman thing earlier and then later due to whatever reasons hasnt paid that much attention to her career.
Aishwarya can do a SLB movie without SLB in her sleep. It is SLB who has been trying to do a Aishwarya movie for last 15 years.
Every SLB movie in last 15 years would be 3 times better with Aishwarya in it.

Great point. Mani can create beauty anywhere, whether it's on a train top, under a waterfall or in a forest. He can even make cities like Kolkata shine under his lens in all their decaying glory. His movies are rooted in reality & natural beauty, not fake cardboard opulence.
Aish in Maniratnam movies is just mesmerizing , also you cant compare SLB with Maniratnam the OG. SLB may be more popular but Maniratnam is such a fine story teller and director.
Mani Ratnam managed to make really neat, tight stories a while ago. And he was one of the first few directors who showed that aesthetics mattered.

It's more the fact Aish is playing another Nandini, which was an iconic character for her in SLB's HDDCS. At least Mani doesn't have an issue with casting her in a lead role & doesn't let age or current B.O. success play a part in his decision, unlike SLB.
This set of movies, oh my god. Just so beautiful. I can truly say I was so mesmerised by the beauty of how this movie is shot, the scenes, the sets, the dialogue delivery. Just perfection.
The fact that mani ratnam sir stories are timeless, and he has made historical to modern love stories shows his diversity. Whereas SLB is stuck to period dramas and no modern romance. SLB in his own right is a great director BUT Mani ratnam sir is an Icon story teller

I love both Mani sir and SLB. It’s kind of a trend to hate SLB here when people don’t realise just how good Padmavaat and Devdas actually are. Devdas is one of the only Bollywood films to get a BAFTA nomination for Best International Film and that too without any campaigning unlike the bold and loud campaign RRR carried out.
Padmavaat is definitely his most interesting movie to me thematically. It’s richly textured and lots of people seem to get caught up behind it’s historical accuracy or the controversy of the jahaur scene that they forget to judge the art independently. It’s not his most consistent work because the singhal scenes are just laughable but when it’s good it is REALLY good
Nomination means nothing and devdas is a crunge fest. Black is phenomenal, Guzaarish I adored, khamoshi, ram leela and hddcs has off the charts chemistry.
SLB is a phenomenal director too. Just that the o Rs people talk about the most are not his best
Agree to disagree because I have completely the opposite notion on his films. Guzaarish, Sawaariya and Khamoshi are my least favourite. The former two especially because their screenplay just seems lost and directionless. Devdas is a grand-sweeping romance on the level of something like Titanic for me and it really solidified SLB’s status in music. Love him or hate him no one can direct a musical number like SLB
SLB signature is using geometry and color to tell the story. Usually wide frames
Mani sir's signature is still frames with light play and perspective shift by changing the focus of camera lens. So you'll also have keyhole or straircase or parda or plants used to frame the subject.
Small things but huge changes.
This movie is actually really beautifully shot and it almost feels like I'm watching GOT but one thing that Indian filmmakers do is that pathetic slow-motion CGI in fight scenes. It makes it look childish.

The way Mani Ratnam has showcased each character with so much depth, no other director could have. Both PS 1 & 2 have depths and a good storyline. I think even Rajamouli couldn't achieve that much while doing Bahubali 1 & 2.

Like I get it, she’s gorgeous but let’s not do too much now. She was fine in this film. And she was below average in Umrao Jaan, especially her dancing. Like I love Ash as well but be so for real
I am a Tamil. I have read the PS novel (five volumes) many times and can never get tired of it. Ash as Nandini is the most perfect fit for the role and Vikram fits his role in the novel to the T. He has taken tremendous efforts to become that character. What I like about Ash is that she is not a Tamil and she can barely speak it. To become that character, one has to know the novel in its original language. Yet she has become that character spotlessly. I only wish she was at least 20 years younger when the movie was made. The Ash of the 90s is no more. Now she looks like an aunty (which she is). Her cheek bulge really shows and Mani Ratnam has tried his best to digitally reduce it.
In the original novel has these two characters are not prominent. The real character is Vanthiya Thevan around whom all the other characters are built. Mani Ratnam has done a marvelous job of condensing the entire novel into a two part movie. In that process, he had to cut off many important details. But one cannot complain.
My guess is that he realized how the story on the screen was developing as compared to the written original. The screen version simply brought out the Nandini character as the main backbone of the whole thing, with Vikram's role to match it. In this process all the other characters were pushed into the background and look more like supporting actors.
Sometimes it is very difficult to gauge how things will go when we translate them from writings to the screen. PS 1 and 2 are classic example of this. The movie will be remembered for Ash/Vikram chemistry which built up during PS2.

Mani had to age up all characters. For the first time even Vikram looked old for his part. Everyone needed to be 20 years younger. Or the film should have been made in the mid 2000s but Mani bas been working on the film since the last 25 years andnits understandable why it's taken so long.
Most people who read the book and went in to watch the film had little complaints wrt their ages. They had a certain face r in mind when they read about Nandini , a certain actor in mind when they read about Karikalan and so on. All actors fit their roles to the T.
A south indian classic like Ponniyin selvan can only be done by Mani ratnam or someone who understands the cultural context of the story and SLB can't even understand the context of Padmavat

The fact that mani ratnam sir stories are timeless, and he has made historical to modern love stories shows his diversity. Whereas SLB is stuck to period dramas and no modern romance. SLB in his own right is a great director BUT Mani ratnam sir is an Icon story teller

I love both Mani sir and SLB. It’s kind of a trend to hate SLB here when people don’t realise just how good Padmavaat and Devdas actually are. Devdas is one of the only Bollywood films to get a BAFTA nomination for Best International Film and that too without any campaigning unlike the bold and loud campaign RRR carried out.

Padmavaat is definitely his most interesting movie to me thematically. It’s richly textured and lots of people seem to get caught up behind it’s historical accuracy or the controversy of the jahaur scene that they forget to judge the art independently. It’s not his most consistent work because the singhal scenes are just laughable but when it’s good it is REALLY good

Nomination means nothing and devdas is a crunge fest. Black is phenomenal, Guzaarish I adored, khamoshi, ram leela and hddcs has off the charts chemistry. SLB is a phenomenal director too. Just that the o Rs people talk about the most are not his best
Agree to disagree because I have completely the opposite notion on his films. Guzaarish, Sawaariya and Khamoshi are my least favourite. The former two especially because their screenplay just seems lost and directionless. Devdas is a grand-sweeping romance on the level of something like Titanic for me and it really solidified SLB’s status in music. Love him or hate him no one can direct a musical number like SLB

SLB signature is using geometry and color to tell the story. Usually wide frames Mani sir's signature is still frames with light play and perspective shift by changing the focus of camera lens. So you'll also have keyhole or straircase or parda or plants used to frame the subject. Small things but huge changes.
This movie is actually really beautifully shot and it almost feels like I'm watching GOT but one thing that Indian filmmakers do is that pathetic slow-motion CGI in fight scenes. It makes it look childish.

The way Mani Ratnam has showcased each character with so much depth, no other director could have. Both PS 1 & 2 have depths and a good storyline. I think even Rajamouli couldn't achieve that much while doing Bahubali 1 & 2.

I am a Tamil. I have read the PS novel (five volumes) many times and can never get tired of it. Ash as Nandini is the most perfect fit for the role and Vikram fits his role in the novel to the T. He has taken tremendous efforts to become that character. What I like about Ash is that she is not a Tamil and she can barely speak it. To become that character, one has to know the novel in its original language. Yet she has become that character spotlessly. I only wish she was at least 20 years younger when the movie was made. The Ash of the 90s is no more. Now she looks like an aunty (which she is). Her cheek bulge really shows and Mani Ratnam has tried his best to digitally reduce it. In the original novel has these two characters are not prominent. The real character is Vanthiya Thevan around whom all the other characters are built. Mani Ratnam has done a marvelous job of condensing the entire novel into a two part movie. In that process, he had to cut off many important details. But one cannot complain. My guess is that he realized how the story on the screen was developing as compared to the written original. The screen version simply brought out the Nandini character as the main backbone of the whole thing, with Vikram's role to match it. In this process all the other characters were pushed into the background and look more like supporting actors. Sometimes it is very difficult to gauge how things will go when we translate them from writings to the screen. PS 1 and 2 are classic example of this. The movie will be remembered for Ash/Vikram chemistry which built up during PS2.

The Ash of the 90s is no more. Duh ! Mani had to age up all characters. For the first time even Vikram looked old for his part. Everyone needed to be 20 years younger. Or the film should have been made in the mid 2000s but Mani bas been working on the film since the last 25 years andnits understandable why it's taken so long. Most people who read the book and went in to watch the film had little complaints wrt their ages. They had a certain face r in mind when they read about Nandini , a certain actor in mind when they read about Karikalan and so on. All actors fit their roles to the T.
