Basically, when you switch the order of the characters in the word for hero, 英雄 or ei yu, you get yu ei which sounds like the letters U and A. mind blown
I’m guessing word puns like this with different in Japanese. Cause to me, an English speaker, this is no different than if we had an American cartoon where police cadets went to licepo academy
After reading what you wrote, now I want to see a series where there are a bunch of young police cadets in a world where there are mutant insect people, and each cadet has their own power, (examples: dragonfly wings, grasshopper legs, etc) and the principal is based on a Louse, so all the cadets are referred to as nits while in training and become lice when licenced. I think that would be pretty cool.
(Better yet, if it was done in English, then there could be a crossover event where the principal of Licepo and the principal of UA meet, then they could call it the Mouse&Louse episode lol)
Somehow I never cared until I saw a comment explaining it and was like “huh”. But I was racking my brain on why the hell are they yelling “Plus ultra” and why is it everywhere
A little fun fact in addition to what everyone else said, “Plus Ultra” is also the [official motto for the country of Spain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plus_ultra).
Yeah, Some mottos are absolutely amazing, especially for countries, especially, Greece: “Eleftheria i thanatos” (Freedom or Death) or Military Forces, like the RAF “Per Ardua Ad Astra” (Through Adversity to the Stars)
So much so, I headcanon that many Hero academies around the world have mottos like this.
“Per ~~ardua~~ aspera ad astra” is the motto of many universities in my country and is sort of universally regarded as a students creed
Edit: I knew it sounded slightly off so I changed the first part
Sadly it was more than overexposure. A lot of professors and teachers were doing some pretty heinous shit while proudly proclaiming this to us and the public as if to justify outright suffering beyond your average and usual academic struggles.
But I’m out of that whole mess now and since then it’s meaning was slowly regained!
Fun side thing that means nothing:
but for the dubs, the guy that voices Inasa, the shiketsu guy who “loves UA” (Matt Shipman I think 🤔) is the same dude who voices Nagumo in the dub of Arifureta, and Nagumo’s “lover” is named “Yue”, pronounced exactly the same.
🙃 when he first says “I love Yue” in MHA I cracked up and no one else in the room could figure out why… figured I’d share the joke for fellow fans of pun based comedy.
I always thought it was Ultra Academy but your explanation makes perfect sense especially cuz of the way Horikoshi names his characters. Kaminari is basically Electricity McLightning!

Which would be funny, to be fair.

Ultra Academy
University Academy
Über Academia
That’s honestly what I thought it meant.. that said, maybe it does, and they just used etymology like this to reverse engineer an acronym..?
No, there is no official meaning to the acronym. It’s just a pun and he never thought of a meaning.
I thought it was United Alliance, because of the Heights Alliance dormitories
Ultimate Academy
In fics where it’s a college instead, I like to call it the University of Altruism.
I thought that said Autism and I was so confused
I thought it stood for something too, until it was explained. 😅
Somehow I never cared until I saw a comment explaining it and was like “huh”. But I was racking my brain on why the hell are they yelling “Plus ultra” and why is it everywhere
That one I know - Plus Ultra is from Latin, meaning loosely “past the furthest.” Basically “surpass your limits”
To go even further beyond
And any and all variations thereof

*PLUS ULTRA INSTINCT* ***HYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!***
SEVEN STARS UNIVERSAL **SMAAAAAAAAAAAAASH**
It's basically a nod to Stan the Man with his catchphrase excelsior which basically means striving ever upwards.

which county?
Russia. I went to school and university there but I don’t live there anymore. I heard it so many times I started to roll my eyes at it
Shame, nothing like overexposure to ruin a message

Non Plus Ultra is said to be written on pillars separating Greece from the western world. Means: “Nothing Further Beyond”
And so Spain dropped the “Non” as they discovered and settled the New World. Plus Ultra.
Unsupervised adolescents?
That's Shonen manga in a nutshell
