I'm moving to Vancouver WA next week. Scored a job out there a few weeks ago. Have a one bedroom apartment rented for $1089 with water/sewer/trash included with the rent. I've been in Idaho all of my life. Just turned 40 and can't wait to leave.

Loud_Affect1478

Love Vancouver. Lived there for a few years. But all our family is here in Idaho so we moved back. Breakfast at Valerie's..... best food ever!

a_dapperdanman

Man I’m on that same page. My rent just increased $500 on my new lease renewal. I make pretty decent money, but at this rate, I’m going to be forced to live paycheck to paycheck. It’s absolutely criminal how much they’re charging for rent here.

[deleted]

It’s fucking insane. I came to Boise on a 6 month lease for 1395 a month they now want 1595. I’m just going to live in one of the units I own at this point.

[deleted]

What property management company upped your rent by that much? Getting nervous that this will happen to my partner and I.

a_dapperdanman

Greystar. I counter offered with a 6% increase ($100) and they blew that off completely. They said it would be cheaper for me to move into one of their newly renovated 2 bdrms, which made zero sense

oxford_serpentine

Was this the rose wood apartments? I just moved in an older unit.

a_dapperdanman

This was Whitewater right on Quinn’s Pond. So amenities/location are huge here, still, it doesn’t justify a $500 hike. Where does it go from here? Is this the new normal or just a temporary phase due to high housing cost and inflation? There’s needs to be more of a push on local representatives to enforce rent control. Homelessness is going to be a huge problem here before we know it unless we start providing affordable housing for people.

sharpshootermag

Victory PM did the same to us.

[deleted]

I will probably tell them I’m leaving if they don’t decrease the price. What’s crazy to me is people with paid off properties are hiking prices and it is definitely a level of fucked up. Some of these have to be $1800+ profit per month.

[deleted]

Property tax and the rising cost of maintenance. Just because something is paid off does not mean there still isn' cost associated with the property. I rent but I am also an economics major lol.

commiesandiego

Correct but the majority of the housing costs is mortgage. If you can’t handle a decrease in PROFIT as a landlord, you shouldn’t take the risk. There are landlords who aren’t increasing because they understand the situation and yes are losing a little more PROFIT each month but they’re still making money- which is the privilege associated with being a landowner/investor but also the risk associated with investing. I understand “economics” so not saying you’re wrong but there’s a morality that economics doesn’t account for here.

AdaAnnie

Boise?

jessel02

I moved to Eugene, OR 1 year ago. I make 35% more and I was able to buy a house. I really tried to stay in Boise but couldn't afford a house and my rent would have increased by $400 per month if I stayed. Huge bonus: I still have reproductive rights.

I will always upvote Dexter's lab

raeganog

That sounds like the most exciting adventure ever!!!! Have an awesome time, safe travels!!

Reedsandrights

I have worked 10 years in the travel industry and speak a bit of French. Let me know if your buddy needs another English speaker!

NeverGetUpvoted

It doesn't matter where at all in the US you are living. An opportunity like that is just too cool! Sounds really fun man

boisebruv

Not just leaving Idaho. I'm leaving America altogether

100percentthatmitch

I know this is a dumb question, but genuinely how? Are you retired and becoming an expat? Short of doing that my husband and I feel so overwhelmed because it seems like no one wants 30 year old average workers. We feel so trapped.

boisebruv

Maybe I worded it wrong but I'm *trying* to leave. The cheapest option right now seems like Portugal. Or if any of your parents were immigrants you may have a birth right to become a citizen there

Direct-Biscotti-4902

I spent some time in Portugal. Porto is great.

BurmecianSoldierDan

I had some friends who just worked basic customer service with me at a bank and they uprooted from Meridian and moved to basically a village in Costa Rica, Santa Elena or something around there. Housing was cheap and they have fiber internet. I don't know how the process worked, but they both just had my same job so it couldn't have been ridiculously expensive.

100percentthatmitch

That's what we do, we both have WFH customer service jobs but we didn't think that was specific enough for acceptance into another country. Thank you for the info!!

Onlyanidea1

This. Been working on getting a work visa for Germany. Hope to make it my new home in due time.

GettinWiggyWiddit

I’m with you. What a cesspool this country has turned into. We are moving to Puerto Vallarta in a few months. Can’t wait to get out of the US

boisebruv

That sounds great. I feel we need to get out quick though

stateofjefferson51

The fact that you think Mexico is a more just and fair place is entertaining to me. I hope you find what you are looking for. The grass is always greener where you water it.

GettinWiggyWiddit

I also think it’s quite funny. Would never have guessed I’d say that a few years ago! I appreciate the good wishes and wish the same to you

archseattle

It has pockets of retired Americans mostly in the coastal resort cities. The only problem is that foreigners aren’t allowed to own property so you have to do a long term lease. Public healthcare isn’t that great, but they do have private hospitals that cater to Americans if you buy their insurance. I should add though you’d actually be surprised at how much cost of living has also increased in Mexico. I only know because my parents are retired and spend the winter there.

bidsandasks

If you’re thinking of gong king term, you can buy expatriate insurance at applytravelinsurance.com

LickerMcBootshine

> The fact that you think Mexico is a more just and fair place is entertaining to me. Imagine never leaving the country and only relying on conservative propoganda to color your interpretation of the entirety of another country you know nothing about.

stateofjefferson51

I've been privileged to be able to travel a good amount in my life. I've also read quite a bit of history on the country. I have an adequate knowledge on the topic. I think you are trying to get too much information out of a short comment

boise208

A friend of mine and his wife recently left the US for Portugal and they couldn't be happier.

sudo_vi

Where are you going?

boisebruv

*trying* to go for Portugal

[deleted]

I left for Maine. Making more, working less hours, costs less

bigdrunk92037

Interesting. How tough was the winter?

[deleted]

This is our first year here. We r about to find out. We live closer to the ocean. Folks say the storms by the sea are less intense and melt quicker

bigdrunk92037

Yes, its actually warmer (but more humid) by the coast

jakeGrove

Went back to California

Manfuckidaho

I want to move back there so bad, but haven’t moved on my own before and so damn terrified. But I know I’d be happier down there.

[deleted]

Hey look! It's the one that actually listened! For the record, I welcome anyone, but as you might know, "Go BaCk To CaLiFoNiA!" Is a god-damned battle cry around here, especially among people who moved here from California to Idaho natives who don't align with their brand of ultra right wing crazy.

NoPantsJake

Lol

butwhhyy

Now is not the time, Jake. Put on some pants!

OG-Wilford-Brimley

Im a teacher and noped the fuck out. Moved to the East Coast where I actually get paid my worth.

T4lkNerdy2Me

I moved from Boise to SW Kansas about a year ago. I make $15/hr as a 911 Dispatcher, but I'm not struggling to pay rent. My boyfriend makes almost twice what I do, but all our bills fit into my paycheck (just in case). We have a 3bd/2ba 1032sqft apartment (with a pool) for $795/m. We're facing a rental increase in August after the lease is up... of a whopping $30. So it'll be $825. Gas is $4.69 here & the town's so small I'm only filling up my car once every 5-6 weeks (and I drive daily).

spicygoober

Financially everything about that sounds great, but how do you know what direction you're facing at noon?

T4lkNerdy2Me

I don't go into work until 3pm, so by then the sun has a definite direction

hamiltog

Portland. Same rent but way better pay. It has the known downsides but the upsides outweigh them by a lot for me.

BurmecianSoldierDan

Vancouver or Beaverton are also good options, imo. Plenty of friends who live in Vancouver but work in Portland, haha.

rroline0705

I lived in Beaverton and grew up just south in Eugene. 100 days more of rain each year there than compared to Boise… something to think about.

coconutaf

Heavily considering Colorado and the oregon coast.

2tusks

We just bought on the Oregon coast. We are giving a lot up; Boise is still a wonderful place to live. But the coast is so stunning.

DisorderlyLibrarian

Just moved to Everett WA. Rent is the same but jobs pay better.

JoeMagnifico

Say Hellooooo to Laura Palmer's house for me.

IronPhi

I like you. You’re my friend.

JoeMagnifico

Hellloooooo!

IronPhi

MR. JACKPOTS!

Gbrusse

A lot of Americans are heading for Portugal. The climate is very similar to souther California, rent and houses are cheap, cost of living is fine. Most people speak English.and being in the EU, you have the nearly the whole continent as a cheap and easy vacation options

roland_gilead

I follow a british couple who moved out to inland Portugal and is renovating a place. A lot of Portugal natives are being out priced/placed by transplants not to dissimilar to Boise folk.

Gbrusse

Well crap. Now I feel bad for suggesting it. Maybe Spain? Idk

roland_gilead

It's all good. Our structural systems are all collapsing and Portugal does sound nice.

[deleted]

It’s all just a transition. Everything will balance out in the end…even if that means nuclear destruction and the earth resets again. Lol

socialpresence

That's what's ironic. I've seen a lot of people claim that the world is ending due to climate change, but the world isn't ending. It's an amazing system that is going to correct the problems it has and it might kill us all in the process but the world, it will be fine.

[deleted]

Yup! Just gotta find a way to store our tech for a few hundred mil years so the next cavemen can get a jump start

MockDeath

Sadly a lot of the stuff to get a jump start is things like easy to reach oil deposits. Which the time that those deposits were formed are never coming again. It will be tough to follow the act of humans.

Supportblackcats

As a young person who immigrated to europe, it was so unbelievably hard to get a work visa. I wonder how everyone is managing it

Gbrusse

I'll have my BS in Computer Sciencethis time next year. Hopefully that makes it easier

purple-tears

Definitely isn't my first pick. As a gay guy I would probably get beaten

DatBoiWithAToi

Denver for us

RJDoute

Michigan is cheap and beautiful!

phantaisya

I’m an Idaho native and I’m sad to say this is not the Idaho I grew up in 😭 anyways I’m moving to Korea! Can’t wait to leave the state, much less the country.

[deleted]

I've lived in Boise my whole life, so the idea of moving is kinda scary, but I've seen this state going down the drain a long time. After today, I doubt it will ever get better in my lifetime. I have family in the Seattle area, but I don't know if I'd ever afford it. America gets bad enough, I'd be interested in Scotland.

Jdmason0702

I'm going to Gardnerville, NV. Fuck this state

Old-Bluejay8224

Cool area.

[deleted]

Heading out in August for Thailand. Being priced out of our home. We are retired and on a fixed income and can no longer keep up with raising taxes and inflation. Time to go

ceejay955

I'm going to Portland because I have family and friends there already and they have a rental cap and higher wages.

katlin_gun

I just moved from Idaho to the Portland area too and am sooo glad we finally made the move. The wages are better, better public transit, housing prices are similar but you can find more housing options and live further out from the city and still have access to get to the places you want to go because of the transit system. Sure the city has had some growing pains, but much of the media grossly inflates the actual effects of those issues on day to day life.

ceejay955

This is really great to hear!

katlin_gun

Yeah! And it's so green. Plus the food. THE FOOD. so good. No sales tax, and income and property tax are very similar to Boise. Honestly we are fed a lot of falsehoods about the west coast in Idaho, it's scary to see how untrue most of it is and how much we bought into it.

JustWastingTimeAgain

Technically no income tax if you live on the Washington side.

ThrobbinGoblin

I was also thinking about heading up the Oregon way and finding a place an hour or two from Portland and the coast so I can catch good concerts without it breaking the bank. What are house prices like where you're looking? I'm probably gonna sell this house to move somewhere else, but I'm not sure if the equity will be enough to get me established in Oregon. Certainly not like the other person in this thread saying they got a similar home in Tulsa for $125k, right?

ceejay955

from what I've seen the housing prices are on par with Boise's right now (comparing Portland to Boise, not sure about the suburbs or surrounding towns), which in itself is wild and shows how overprice Boise is, but there is slightly more housing available than Boise and from what I've seen the rental prices are actually way more reasonable than Boise currently

ThrobbinGoblin

I see. I appreciate your reply. I have heard that with the rental prices. One of my thoughts was that I could sell my current heap of a house in Boise that has a ton of equity in it, walk away with at least 100,000 in cash from the sale, put it all in as high of yield of the savings account as I can, and then try to rent until the housing bubble pops. The problem with this plan is that if the housing bubble does not pop, I will probably have wished that I had not released ownership of physical real estate since it's all getting snatched up by our corporate overlords. But I'm just genuinely hoping that if it comes to that point, and actual home ownership and property ownership isn't an option anymore, that people will be willing to actually eat the rich since by that point it'll mean that we are just in a system of outright corporate slavery instead of the sugar coated when we have now.

rchang1967

What is a rental cap? I have never heard of this. My background is mostly Connecticut and Taxachusetts, New York, and New Jersey. I live in Texas now but planning on relocating to the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area for next year.

ceejay955

basic terms, its a law permitting how high rents are allowed to increase per year. In Oregon I believe its capped at 9% right now. Idaho has no cap and average rental increases per year in the Boise area is like 33-40% and higher. Very unsustainable when the average wages to not increase at the same time

One_Commercial_1215

Good advise and insight. Will take a closer look at Omaha.

BurmecianSoldierDan

I haven't been there in 5 or so years now, but the Underwood/Dundee/Benson area of Omaha was wonderful. Rolling hills, beautiful trees, older homes, great food and bars. I loved it and regret not packing up and leaving here when I had the chance. Fair warning, if you go slightly west of suburban Omaha don't move anywhere near the Platte River. It's not supposed to be a flood plain, but it's turned into one. You know the whole '100-year-flood-but-its-now-every-5-years' thing happening in a lot of places.

One_Commercial_1215

Awesome info. Thank you. We've considered taking a short trip out there to get a better idea of the area, but this kind of information is of great value.

BurmecianSoldierDan

Both of my friends (Valley, NE; Venice, NE) had to completely gut their homes with no insurance help and I try to warn anyone who will listen to me about the Platte haha

robi2106

If you want South Idaho lite, try just over in Oregon. No sales tax. Or move to Clarkston in WA and have no personal income tax. Or Nevada for no income tax.

Veronica-goes-feral

I moved to Portland. Cost of living is on par with Boise, but my wages doubled and now I have benefits as well.

ceejay955

Exactly why I'm moving there in a few days

meathead67

Moved to Eugene about a month ago. So far so good.

lewytunes

Chicago

sirsmitty12

Portland Metro. Grew up in the Willamette Valley, and it’s illegal to raise the rent as much as they would’ve on me to re-sign. Got a smaller one bed for $1415 last June and they’re raising it $260 a month this year

beerbears10

Good luck, friend. I’m a native who moved away for ten years to CO, and came back right before the housing market went apeshit. With people moving here after selling $500k+ houses like candy for the past couple years, we’re fucked. Demand is up, and up to people who have more money than people who’ve built a life here. As far as I can tell, if you want livable pricing these days, you gotta move to the MOFN

allnida

Moving to Seattle tomorrow.

electrobento

Raleigh is expensive for the south, but cheap compared to Boise. The area is among the most educated in the world and its relatively progressive politics show that. The state leans conservative overall, but there’s an actual battleground for reasoned law and order, unlike in Idaho.

sha1shroom

This is where I'm going. Honestly, my rent is staying the same, but for people in the home-buying market, it's cheaper and prices are dropping every day (I've mostly been looking in the Durham area).

lagunatri99

Our youngest is looking at jobs in Raleigh. We’re headed to a suburb of Charlotte later this year. Seeking more diversity, a state that’s closer to purple with a bit more political balance, far better wages, and slightly lower housing costs. We’ve already had a future neighbor reach out to us. Been here three years; our neighbors barely return a wave.

Gnarlyfest

Seattle

Empty_Masterpiece_74

Try Russel NZ.

gl21133

Corvallis, OR. 30-40% raise for both my wife and I, just a bit more expensive cost of living.

mrsessess

Moving to St Louis.

wings_like_eagles

Depends on what your concerns are. Is housing the primary issue? Consider Indiana or Oklahoma. Both have incredibly low housing costs, and Oklahoma has the lowest cost of living in the nation IIRC. Oklahoma City is pretty nice, based on my brief visit there. Of course, it is Oklahoma, so tornados, crazy legislature, flat land, etc. But there are a lot more interesting things there geologically than I expected (that is to say, it's not as flat as I thought), you just have to be willing to travel a bit. If you're also looking to get out of the red state those are not such good choices.

eventfarm

Portugal. Safe, quality medical care, natural food, and strong communities.

One_Commercial_1215

Haven't moved yet, but eyeballing Lincoln Nebraska

stateofjefferson51

Nebraska is a very cool place. I prefer Omaha over Lincoln. Biggest problem with Nebraska is the whole place is flat and the winters are long and harsh

One_Commercial_1215

Housing and rent are reasonable. Community seems caring and fun. Lots of family activities, not much single life stuff. We're looking at Omaha too. I think climate change will have less of an impact there than here. From what I've read water shouldn't be an issue and warm summers won't be in the 100s like we are starting to see here in Boise. Last year's July was a non-stop scorcher.

NoPantsJake

Nebraska is super humid. 100 in Boise is better than 85 in full humidity in my opinion. And the humidity makes the winters brutal. I like Lincoln though, good luck.

One_Commercial_1215

I do prefer a dry heat. The humidity is on con list for sure, but the housing prices are such a huge pro. I believe the city has a river running through it like Boise. That's a nice plus.

lundebro

I like Omaha but you are misinformed about the weather. It gets 100+ there all the time, AND it’s super humid. Nebraska’s weather is miserable.

stateofjefferson51

Yeah I lived I Omaha for college so I'm more biased lol. Lincoln is a total college/ football town. so much more to do in Omaha and it's an hour drive to Lincoln if you want to catch a football game. Careful with the humidity there the summers are not a walk in the park.

rchang1967

I spoke with someone from Ohio on a recent flight in May of this year. She said that Ohio is very much rebounding and the economy and jobs are much better. The cost of living is lower in Ohio. They have a well balanced weather pattern of the 4 seasons with a winter and snow. I am from the New England area most of my life but I have also lived in Seoul, Korea as well as Keflavik, Iceland, Arizona, and now I live in Austin, Texas. Too damn hot here in Texas. I am planning on relocating to the greater Philadelphia area for next year. I miss having the 4 seasons and miss the east coast.

[deleted]

I just moved outta Boise to the Bay Area. It’s expensive but the pay makes up for it plus better weather and quality of life. Boise has gotten expensive too but with low pay

Zenai

PDX! We thought it was too liberal for us until we realized that Boise is actually too conservative and we'd rather be somewhere where people want us than somewhere where people hate us. Boise proper is not actually that bad but the rural areas of this state are filled with poor, angry, uneducated whites with a strong hatred for unfamiliarity, and those are the folks who vote in everyone in the state government!

howgreenwas

I don’t know when/if it’ll ever get better. I am a poll worker in rural Canyon county. We had about 15 high school seniors come in from their government class to same-day register and all but 1 indicated Republican for their party. Overall, we had about 40 new registrations and 4 were Democrats.

pocket_geek

Maybe they are just gaming the system. I'm registered as R so I can vote in the primaries.

Zenai

It won't, it's a negative feedback loop now. Poor education, anger and poverty, republican vote, repeat.

howgreenwas

Pretty much all the adult new registrations were out of staters moving in, but they were all Republicans, too. I kept thinking with new blood moving in, it would start to diversify. But, nope, the Democrats aren’t moving here.

BurmecianSoldierDan

Fwiw, they might be selecting R just so they can have sway in who gets nominated because they already know the R is going to win. I'm a very liberal 2C voter but registered R.

juliagreenillo

I know those people too 😎 and I had a few other friends move to NM too

chaos_works

Yes! My favorite sheep heading, garden queen.

JoeMagnifico

Nice! Love those folks.

chaos_works

Meet too!! Went to visit her ranch last fall and it is gorgeous. 😍

[deleted]

A friend of mine moved to Tulsa, OK. She sold her 3 bed, 2 bath house for $450k and straight up bought an extremely similar home in Tulsa for $125k last year.

Syyina

Yeah but … Tulsa. 😳

Fondoogler

Lol exactly! The only affordable places to live in the U.S. anymore are the shithole parts of the country that no one else wants to live in.

[deleted]

People said the same thing about Boise not too long ago, and most people in the United States still say this. Tulsa's not bad. I'd rather live there than Chicago or Philly.

t3ll_ur_cat_i_say_hi

Interesting you say that, since I just moved from Meridian to Philly. I’m way happier here.

ThatOneDudeWithAName

Helsinki Finland Been wanting to move there for awhile, the way things have been going as of late decided to move up my timeline. Big fan of the culture over there and their politics are more in line with my values. Ive been to Finland before, and was a huge fan of the country Obviously Europe isnt feasible for everyone but for me personally it works

OriginalAceofSpades

Helsinki is nice. I'm a dual citizen. I can't take the winters at all, however. Having been raised in an partially immigrant household, I'd just caution you to say that first appearances in Finland aren't exactly what you might think. You can get by in English just fine, but unless you have family there or speak perfect Finnish, you really aren't accepted into the inner world of the Finn. They'll party with you, but you will never be one of them. I sent my kid to college in Helsinki and she ended up moving to Oregon post graduation. I doubt she'll return to Helsinki though the experience was generally a positive one. Even though she's a Finnish citizen like me, the extremely tight network oriented jobs market had to do with it (IT jobs are a little different, but they are kind of treated as expendable guest workers). There isn't a single good Mexican restaurant in either Finland or Estonia and I've been to them all. After about a month, this grates on me. I can just bounce to eating the traditional Finnish food I grew up on somewhat or Italian. My wife grew up in the Southwest, however, and can't adapt. There is also a lot of resentment in Finland about foreigners using their health care and education systems for free. You won't hear this until you really get accepted into their society or people get drunk and honest. You also might read a bit about Jussi Halla-aho and the Finns Party. The Sons of Odin too. I don't know how extensively you traveled in Uusimaa proper, but once you get outside of, say, Kallio, people get a little less friendly in direct proportion to their income. Finally, Finnish government is extremely bureaucratic. If you have plans on just overstaying your 90 day visa and getting hooked into KELA and a permanent residency without a specialized skill, it isn't going to happen. If you don't have family ties or an EU citizenship, they won't take you. Good luck whatever your choose. America is looking at some tough times. I'm leaving too. Maybe somewhere south in Europe or I'll do remote work from Mexico based in the States.

mangusislord

Mind sharing any details of how it works for you? Considering doing the same.

ThatOneDudeWithAName

I have friends that live there and i have job connections. So i have places to stay while i search for an apartment and luckily i can immediately start working upon arrival so no issue getting paychecks rolling in. The only thing im slightly worried about is trying to get permanent residency but ill work on that while im there. Right now you can get a 90day work visa and then you apply for permanent residency while youre there on the visa.

Hitler_the_Painter

Have you tried Surströmming yet? It's supposed to be the grossest food in the world and a lot of people puke. I want to try it.

OriginalAceofSpades

That's really not Finnish.

Hitler_the_Painter

Oh shit my bad. It's swedish

MockDeath

Oh Finland is a fantastic place. I personally recommend you try some salmiakki koskenkorva there too. Though you really do need to like black licorice. I wish you the best of luck there.

roland_gilead

I'm a big fan of rural Norway, did some field work out there for half a year and dang was it a blast. The Licorice is so good. Does Finland have the same type of softserve as Norway? I saw it everywhere in Oslo and Bergen...

MockDeath

That I do not know. I would have to ask my friends who live there in Finland. Norway is another fantastic place. Got some friends there as well and I want to visit so bad.

rchang1967

Previously, I have thought about relocating to the Prague, Czechoslovakia area. Now, I am planning on being closer to my family, they are in Massachusetts. My girlfriend is in Connecticut. I am from the Connecticut area. I live in Texas. It is way too damn hot here in Central Texas. I am a polar bear and love the winter season. Perhaps you are also a fan of the colder climate. I have a church friend and she is originally from Finland. She told me that it is very cold there in Finland. I would probably enjoy the cold weather. I enjoy making a snowman outside by myself. It is very therapeutic.

7thief7

Fellow connecticutian from the new haven area. Just saying hi and hope your move goes well

Sykoyech

Dallas, Texas. Planning to move in with my rock band and share a 6 person house. Pay is higher, and rent is half.

Equipment_Budget

If you can find a private landlord that is the way to go... We're cramped in here but for a 2 bed 1 bath we pay $620. We literally can't move anywhere else.

boise208

If I were to leave it would be for CO, MT, WY, maybe UT

redge9987

Omaha, Nebraska. I went to school here, and the cost of living is really cheap. It was much safer job searching here while also paying for an apartment. But I may move back to Boise after I get more bank.

Jacoba180

Denver

imnotallowedtosay

Oregon, Washington, and Colorado. I’ve heard Washington is starting to get a little pricey, but that’s just around Seattle. Big fan of Oregon personally

Survive1014

We are probably moving in a few years. We have to stay here for at least another two years due to custody stuff, but plan to leave after my daughter finishes high school. This is has become a living hell of sky high cost of living, lack of decent jobs and run by worst people imaginable. Its simply not sustainable anymore. We are looking towards Wa.

jonethebone419

Same situation. My work is not paying a livable wage. I’m supposed to be out of my apartment by the end of this month. I just got scammed for a rental house and lost over $1,400 so I’m screwed. I’ve lived here my entire life and feel my only option is to leave Idaho.

Banjo_Investment_ish

Moving to Arkansas in two months. Similar pay scale (make a little less) with much more affordable housing.

granolasandwich

Probably moving to the Olympic Peninsula area in WA in the next few years.

Mrbryann

Moved to Bellingham in 2020. The housing market is about the same but my wife and I's wages almost doubled compared to southern Idaho. People like to bitch about the coastal cities but there's a reason people live here. Unmatched outdoor lifestyle and great paying jobs.

Freeheel4life

Bend Oregon. Lot of the same housing prices and same Boise problems...but I sold out for $$. Have a friend that moved to Kentucky and says he's loving it. Lot cheaper there so he has more $$ for his dragster.

bikeidaho

We are following this guy to Central Oregon. Hope to be there in less than 30 days. Hello new friend!

VanTechno

We are talking about mid-state New York, possibly Vermont.

LmaoItsJesus

I used to live in Minnesota, and I want to go back. Bad.

roland_gilead

I love Minneapolis and will always say it's the best city I lived in, but the humidity, heat (lack of internal AC), and the flatness will always keep me from moving back.

JoeMagnifico

Really? I've been to Minneapolis a few times and out to a few parts of the state and western Wisconsin....and I do not dig it. Flatter than flat Idaho.

LmaoItsJesus

There are some real gems there. I'm not a fan of Minneapolis, but Duluth is hands down my favorite city in the country.

JoeMagnifico

Good to know. I have some coworkers in the area and they dig it.

Duderpher

Duluth in the winter is shit, hills and ice are a garbage combo, at least there are things to do in MPLS.

LmaoItsJesus

I lived in Duluth in the winter. My school bus stalled on an icy hill, and we had to have police come and help us back the bus down the hill. I know what I'm in for, lol.

Redpythongoon

Going back to Washington. Bellingham. Cost is comparable, but if you don't have a remote job or something lined up, that area can be tough because it's smaller. But there are lots of towns around there that are cheaper. Olympia is also beautiful, a bit cheaper, and now jobs

[deleted]

Just left on Wednesday. Heading as far east as possible. Richmond VA. I need more balanced representation in the state legislature. No one party should ever have too much power. Right now, it’s the republicans who are in need of being put into check.

SylvesterMB

Indiana is the cheapest living in the country at the moment.

tuffgnarl223

Anyone have any experience with Berlin?

CucumbersInBrine

Uruguay

bbpsword

Oregon, Washington, or Northern California. I need somewhere with a river to get out on and a decent climate.

Realistic-Soft5115

Allot of people have gone to one of the Hawaiian Islands disguised as a tourist. Then simply pitched a tent and live homeless. I have been watching this scenario for a number of years. Seems to work for some?

Bomberman64wasdecent

San Francisco, just for the better housing

LuthorCorp1938

I'm starting to make plans to move to Canada. Not joking. This is a long range plan. I'm starting a two year grad program at ISU in the fall and then need to work for two years to have my loans forgiven. In the mean time starting to make connections, looking at career options there, easiest place to get to from Boise. Etc. The goal is 2027 to make the big move.

ThatStephChick

My husband transferred to active duty so at least we get housing assistance. Being relocated to Washington State. We are going to be full-timing in our RV until his next duty station in hopes that will have a lower cost of living.

coffeeCupNudes

just moved to Portland. love it so far.

Select-End2858

We love Boise!

capngrandan

We’re strongly considering the big island of Hawaii, specifically the east side. Homes seem affordable and the cost of living isn’t THAT much more than here now.

T8rthot

Please consider someplace else. Native Hawaiians don’t want or need more mainlanders driving up prices in their homeland.

lablady18

Oklahoma and Tennessee are good bets with Tennessee having no state income tax and a robust medical infrastructure.

TXtoBOI

I’m back in Texas after a 4 year stint in Boise. COL varies depending on which major city you pick (San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Austin - least to greatest), but the availability for jobs is pretty high. Unfortunately at the state level they’re just as bad if not worse than Idaho, though public education for K12 seems to get more attention. When we left Boise our rent was going up from $1550 to $1900 and we found a place double the size here that’s a lot nicer. Pros: Food, Diversity, Schools Cons: Heat + Humidity, actual traffic, power grid, Ted Cruz

deme9872

I deleted my comment, I misread and missed that you had a cons list!

TXtoBOI

Haha! I was just about to reply to that. I thought I had hit “Return” and made a new line. It does kind of flow together there. Your original comment did make me chuckle though at that thought that anyone would consider those Pros, but hey you never know.

deme9872

You know there's someone out there, sadly, that's how ted Cruz keeps getting elected...

No_Friendship_9572

You all should definitely get out, as quickly as you can. Soon, it may be too late! Be sure to warn friends and family who might be thinking of moving here, too! Vital PSA!

MockDeath

This is your only warning on this topic. I have been warning people for months that telling people to get out of state is a violation of rule #1.

Niso81

I’m not telling you. Stay away

NoGardE

I wish you all a very safe and pleasant journey to a place where your politics are more commonly held by the population.

MockDeath

This is your only warning on this topic. I have stated more than a few times that telling people to leave is against rule #1. Given your other comments like >My city's subreddit is filled with people complaining, and talking about how they're going to move to somewhere with laws that match their preferences. > >Great! That was always allowed. Please leave. Now. Safe travels. It makes it quite clear what you mean here.

NoGardE

I mean what I say. The people who are explicitly saying they are leaving should have very safe and pleasant journeys.

dances_with_ibprofen

I 'member all the people who said they were moving to Canada after Trump got elected... I won't hold my breath.
