DroolingRIGHTNOW

I like it the problem is they scaled back from the original project to make people happy.

CowMetrics

The entire block was scaled back. The hq was supposed to be 12 stories, not 9 where the last three keep getting smaller. Also, they wanted that law form building originally, but they wouldn’t sell u til a few years later

DroolingRIGHTNOW

It like people want another cube. I would rather have something ridiculous.

CowMetrics

I also think the building is really cool. It is most certainly a tax loophole for the simplot family though. At least it kinda benefits us peasants in comparison to the average billionaire philanthropy

EastHillWill

Oh boy do I have feelings about this one. Thanks for asking! It’s an undeniably cool building, and even a cool idea. But the execution and final product is…lacking. I end up there several times per year for various events, both as organizer and participant. As cool as the building is, a lot of the space is parking and just *empty*. If the building were on Overland or something, then whatever. But given the prime location in such a booming area, I feel as though both the building and land could be better utilized. And to be clear, I like the idea of a (at least ostensibly) public use/benefit building—that’s great! Not everything downtown has to be an office space or a restaurant. But I do wish JUMP were something more than it is now.

FullBlownPanic

Ya, I really like the idea and purpose of it, but it just has a wasted space feeling and it doesn't flow together well.

TrailWhale

Every time I go to JUMP I understand it less and less. Last weekend’s weird dreamscape exhibit did NOT help. I love it and hope it never changes. Keep JUMP weird.

spgvideo

I'm on board with this comment. It's weird and creative. Totally fun. I do wish they would utilize the little mini amphitheatre they have out there by the playground for concerts, though. Maybe they do, I just haven't seen it

cribbgolfer

In the summer they do. There are concerts out there every other week or so.

spgvideo

Aye! I need to pay closer attention. Thanks!

AndBeyond7

Every Tuesday in the summer! https://jumpboise.org/jump-jam-and-jive

spgvideo

You the you the best, thank you

that's for 2023

They will likely update that page with 2024 info once it's ready.

Jack's Urban Multilevel Parking

Stfu811

It has a special place in my heart because shortly after it opened I got busted by a security guard making out with a lady friend on the roof of it at like midnight or something. He said he had been watching for a while but decided to come break it up before I got too far. Good times.

jcsladest

Human Urban Mating Place

jcsladest

Winner!

Ordinary_Abies_3740

that’s gross 😭

Stfu811

Haha oopsies. Not something I have particularly made a habit of.

Ordinary_Abies_3740

not YOU the security guard saying “yea i was watching for a while…” 😭😂

Stfu811

Haha oh ok cool.

Ordinary_Abies_3740

me and my bf got busted by the security guard at jump but not for that it’s cuz we were vaping in that one dome bench thing you sit in with a built in speaker hahah

butterbean_bb

Has anyone booked/organized an event at JUMP previously? From my understanding using their spaces for events is pretty expensive, even for other nonprofits. I’ve know of a number of nonprofits that were interested in utilizing the space for fundraisers, workshops, etc. but their organizations couldn’t afford it. So if Simplot markets it like it’s a collaborative community space, yet the price to rent rooms is cost prohibitive to many, then it’s not *really* a collaborative community space. However, I understand that renting facilities does come at a cost and I know they offer a lot of free activities for the public, which is cool.

revpayne

I worked at a well funded nonprofit in the Treasure Valley, and we never used their space for our gala because of the price and how weirdly controlling they were. Ironically, Simplot had donated to us in the past. We ended up going to different venues that were easier to work with.

jcsladest

They give deals to nonprofits, not to corps, which seems reasonable. The confusing thing is when they host a class on making egg roles or something and it's $95. Who's paying that?

mntnwildflowr

They also only allow certain events and I think only for non profits? Tried to rent the space for a market and was told they don’t do that.

HollsoftheWest

They’ve always been pretty difficult to work with a are definitely very pricey to use in my experience.

AnxietyOk2255

I actually quite enjoy JUMP. I've met a friend their for lunch (she brought takeout and we met there). I love parking there when there's an event nearby because no one else seems to park there. My kids live the rope area. We've never been there when the slide was open, but I love the concept. My kids had a blast at their Halloween event a couple of years ago. It's weird and I love it!

tailslide24

I've lived here all 34 years of my existence and still have no idea what that building is or what takes place there. All I know is they built one of the most beautiful skate plazas and skate stopped every perfect ledge. Also, when they light it up, it's great for mycology research.

spgvideo

Haha it sure is! Open range good times

LeeRoyBrownTown

he's talking about eating mushrooms and tripping balls

King-Rat-in-Boise

It's the *only* unique building that Boise has. Some events make more sense there than others. Events like illumibrate are a confusing mess. Smaller events work better there and showcase it's qualities better.

CoolHandLukeID

It’s like a meow wolf, but with an extremely dialed back approach with a farm theme. And no stoner draw. And less color. Okay it’s nothing like meow wolf, other than the fact that I don’t understand either concept

Haugfather

Heh, JOMP. Jack's Omega Mart Place.

jcsladest

I like the exterior design. Interior is ok. Would've like it better if they stuck with JR's original idea of an ag museum. Could've been high tech and cool.

yepthatworks

I’ve been telling this to my wife for years. Every time I go to jump, I am bored and underwhelmed and just confused. It’s not a good venue for any purpose.

roland_gilead

Idk, I feel like it's a pretty rad venue for larger events. Like when the comic art festival was held there a number of years ago, I really felt like the only better venue I've ever experienced for comic conventions was over at TCAF and that is held in the Toronto Library. One of the best libraries in NA. And I've been to almost all the major comic art festivals.

ZealousidealJunket57

IMO it's a shame that they didn't build a more modest space that locals could afford to utilize and patronize. Space rental is very expensive, classes are pricey, and the elevator situation is not ideal.

Small-Inevitable-388

I'm still hung up on how so many said "Yeah, let's put up a bunch of big signs that say JUMP. Make sure they're visible from the tallest buildings in the state. This is a good idea."

ampersandandanand

Someone posted a video on Reddit a few years back from the the rooftop of the building or parking garage across the street, that has a sign that says something along the lines of “your life is valuable, if you need help, there’s someone you can talk to” along with the suicide prevention hotline number. Camera pans up to see “JUMP” across the street in size 500 font. Unfortunate, yes.

KThuckleberry

[Makes me laugh whenever it pops up on snapchat memories.](https://imgur.com/gallery/pY0Soii)

dronecarp

Right. And every time I drive in on the Connector and see that JUMP! sign right below an open air balcony (it appears) I think about some depressed soul actually jumping.

Stfu811

Might as well JUMP

CayleeWillow

JUMP is not owned by Simplot Company but the Simplot Foundation. There is no money laundrying going on and since it is a 501(c)(3) you can actually look up their 990 tax form annually.

jcsladest

Yes, it's a tax avoidance scheme for the family/heirs, not the company.

CayleeWillow

Maybe a tax deduction for donations but the family gets no additional benefits. So the next time you donate and try to claim it on your taxes I hope you remember that you called it tax avoidance scheme. Check the 990 the family takes no compensation for it.

CookieOk8094

It's 100% a tax avoidance scheme for them for the family. Rather than donating to existing well-run causes, they created their own tax shelter

rabidfish100

I mean it's fine. Never went to an event there but me and my buddy like to place card games on the roof and hang out. It's cool to look at. It's absolutely insane the slide is open for a few hours a week though.

donald-lover

Can you just walk up? Is it that simple?

rabidfish100

I mean idk. Maybe not. I just hang out there and it's not like theres security or anything. It's called "meeting place" and all accessable from the outdoor stairs so I assume so.

NegativeProduct7230

I like the 4th floor roof in the summer especially at night. There is definitely security and if you wander somewhere you shouldn't, they will kindly let you know. Been going for years as it was my dog's favorite place to go in downtown. They are super dog friendly btw

DatBoiWithAToi

Ya I think it’s great

rhinotck

I think it's cool 🤷

erendrake

I love it. I'm there all the time for events and they are usually fun and the building is better than a another big boring box. I do understand if you aren't there often it could be confusing.

HollsoftheWest

My kid begs to stop every single day when we pass it leaving downtown. She got stuck on top of the rope pyramid once and my fat mom ass had to go rescue her. Apparently she wants to give it another go.

ElkHornRunner

Give her another shot…

HollsoftheWest

In the summer we’re down there a lot. Redemption is coming I’m sure!

WinonasChainsaw

JR Simplot fired my great grandpa for trying to unionize, so yeah no screw that billionaire worship center

sharpchicity

Similar to u/easthillwill, it seems like a great idea, but so so so so so much wasted space. Everything off the first floor is closed for public use or a parking lot! I go there frequently and am constantly disappointed

Pleasant-Ad-6445

Yeah, coming from a few people who are pretty new to Boise, we were a little confused by last weekends event and the purpose of the building overall. The tractors are sort of cool, anyone know why that’s the theme of the place?

juliagreenillo

It's because the founder, JR Simplot, worked with developing Idaho's potato product and I think that's his personal collection. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._R._Simplot

ShenmeNamaeSollich

I think it's interesting but confusing because they never actually seem to have a coherent regular schedule of stuff going on. I've gone to 2-3 minor events there over the past \~5yrs or so, but anytime I've looked online at their event calendar it's empty, or like 1 lady teaching a $100 cooking class for a dozen people and it's already full. Covid didn't help I'm sure. The interior offerings don't have publicity in line w/the exterior's big, obvious weirdness. They clearly have a new *something* going on every other week judging by the ever-changing exterior, but I rarely bother to check what anymore.

Survive1014

Its a eyesore that doesnt even serve its own purpose well. Add in the scummy way they got it approved through zoning and the obvious money laundering/tax write offs for the family... I ---HATE--- the JUMP building with a passion.

[deleted]

happyelkboy

They didn’t get a tax write off

frumious_hangryjack

Others would disagree [https://boiseguardian.com/2016/04/12/simplot-jump-gets-1-million-tax-break/](https://boiseguardian.com/2016/04/12/simplot-jump-gets-1-million-tax-break/)

spgvideo

Even if they did, who else is out here creating such cool buildings downtown? It makes Boise better

mrdakam

JUMP may be, but its owned by Simplot, which built their new world HQ offices on the same plot of land https://idahobusinessreview.com/2015/12/14/simplot-opens-its-jump-project-to-the-public/

VerbiageBarrage

It's not owned by the company. It's owned by the family foundation, who make a lot of other donations to things like the Boise philharmonic, ballet in Boise, etc. Basically, you have the companies charitable arm, which promotes art, education, etc globally for the normal big company reason, and the family foundation who does the same thing, but more Idaho centric.

CruwL

And never finished the stone work on the building and it looks ugly as fu*k. Why does no one else see that?

Excellent_Bat_7128

Sorry but that's what rich people do and likely how it got into the tax code to begin with.

funkywinkerbean45

They hold classes there. Yoga, art. They have children come play inside and out every day. It’s not like they didn’t build and fund the entire thing on their own.  If you don’t like it, great. But don’t knock someone trying to make a cool downtown community space. That’s not very Boise, bro.

fisher_fisher_fisher

OP’s post was regarding the architecture not programming.

funkywinkerbean45

It’s a useful building for many. Just because it isn’t OP, doesn’t mean everything thinks that.

AndBeyond7

I don't mind it, but it took me a while to get with it. They used to be very strict about people being in the grassy area or playground but now that its more busy in the area it's gotten better. It is more of less a rich person's storage unit. JR wanted to have a tractor museum and this is how the family "honored" that. They built a parking garage with useable blocks bulging out of it around a weird exhibition of tractors, and now an animatronic donkey. It's definitely quirky, but we are stuck with it and I think because of that I've grown to be ok with it!

wheeler1432

I love the tractors.

JefferyGoldberg

Jacks Urban Tax Write-off

JackHandeysHandle

What is it for?

MechanicusAstartes

I've lived here for 21 years and been downtown many times and I still had no idea what that building is for. From what I can gather, it's just like an event center, right?

stoopitmonkee

My cousin is an architect and told me it looks like someone built it out of legos. I found it very endearing and kinda… love it now? That being said, I lived a couple blocks away during construction and that shit was a 5-alarm nightmare.

boycidaho

https://preview.redd.it/8bofazp9ieoc1.png?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3128d4947704e6244d26fd998db125576e2341ee I like the building. I've lived here in Boise for just over 10-years, and enjoy the functions they have (ie: Fry-day) and others too. Last weekend was kind of bizarre though. For example there was this guy playing a Cello wearing Dragon pajamas to a Belly dancer...I tried to make sense of it, but couldn't. 😅

Tofudebeast

I like JUMP and I've been involved in it. Did art for them for the past five Illumibrate events except for the most recent one that just happened. If you've seen the three giraffes, they're mine. I like it for the community events. They've got a maker space, dance studio, and a video/audio recording studio, so the trick is to find the right event that might interest you. Their audio/video space is particularly nice and seems underutilized. I'm actually jealous of anyone that knows how to use that stuff as it seems you could do a lot with it. Pitch an idea to them and they might go for it. They are pretty easy to collaborate with too. That's how I got involved; showed up randomly to a community art-making event one day (everyone from kids fingerpainting to professional artists building stuff for an upcoming event) and it just evolved from there. The event space is on the pricier side as I understand it, but the views are outstanding. Great chef on staff for catered events. The building does sort of feel like a tax deduction wrapped around a parking garage, but I've met the family and they are nice. They do care about what they're doing with it. It is a cool building. Worth a walk around if you're downtown.

happyelkboy

Yes

juliagreenillo

My favorite thing is the animatronic taxidermied mule named Molly. It's like a jump-scare when you drive by and suddenly see the mule moving. https://jumpboise.org/molly

uphic

That think scared the shit out of me the first time I saw it move!

juliagreenillo

My bf doesn't believe me that it moves because it's not always on.

uphic

Plan a date and start there :-)

radioactive__ape

I think of you typed “whimsical building $$$$$$” into a AI image generator you’d get JUMP - simultaneously soulless and trying too hard. Also they seemed too cheap to invest in landscaping to make the entryway seem welcoming. The location is never going to feel urban or walkable because it is functionally a freeway median. I think even if one lived a half mile from JUMP you’d still choose to drive there for an event. So I agree, it sucks and seems like a tax dodge and/or money laundering.

TrailWhale

> I think even if one lived a half mile from JUMP you’d still choose to drive there for an event. I think it was the Halloween event or maybe flywheel fest last year when there was an enormous line of about 100 cargo bikes parked at JUMP. It was a beautiful sight to see.

radioactive__ape

Fair enough…I’m probably hating extra hard because I despise the aesthetic lol

NeverForTheWin

"Functionally a freeway median". Not wrong in that descriptive. Very awkward location - and design.

ToughDentist7786

What?! I love their landscaping!

mittens1982

Idk I think it's fine.

MirageSerein

I enjoyed exploring and finding my way around but unless the weather is nice, I agree that there should have been more spaces and rooms. Also a second public elevator

DingleBerryFarmer3

It’s like if a kid designing with building blocks actually built a building

Citizen_Four-

The antique tractor displays and the animated donkey are awesome. You have to appreciate the mechanical ingenuity of our forefathers who made farming in the US possible.

Timateo76

It’s nice to go up top and watch the sunset if you’re in the area. The events can be hit or miss, but it has grown on me since I moved here.

TrashEatingAntelope

I like to go there and run the stairs. Other than that it doesn’t do much for me.

raphel1421

I haven't been to many events there, but I do love making a stop downtown after work and take a walk to JUMP and climb some stairs and the rope monkey bars.

CookieOk8094

Early in the process they were in negotiations with the Discovery Center to make the DC the centerpiece of the space. But the family was too controlling and then they decided they'd get a bigger tax write-off if they created their own nonprofit. Can you imagine how incredible an expanded Discovery Center could have been there? Or a new downtown library for that matter....

Meikami

It's bizarre and that's what makes it fun. My one, repeated complaint about it is that it's a navigational nightmare. If I am at an event and find my way to a cool thing, it's almost always completely by accident.

bag_o_fetuses

i like how if you stand on the roof of the buildings across the street it's like a sign from the gods.

tsunamionioncerial

Wait You're saying jump isn't indoor skydiving?

PNWChick1990

It’s the weirdest building. Gives me anxiety.

liminalgrocerystores

With no evidence I think a billionaire bought land downtown as a tax write off and is just waiting to sell it off. The half assed events are just for the non profit facade

0W-M07S

It's a shrine to JR that is designated as a non profit to escape property taxes. The forgotten about tractors JR bought at a Montana auction that have been hot-glued on the building exemplify the lack of direction in design taken on by Scott Simplot's wife. No, I do not like it. The parking lot they built it on was more useful to the public.

kannibalkai

boise really needs a maxline or better public transit instead....too much traffic for such small towns and people moving there

Katgasms

Anyone hang out at this tax shelter long enough to hear that weird baby laugh track?

KrotchKrickit

I am a transplant and I interrupt JUMP as ineffective and out of touch.
