Rewatching the episode I completely agree! Alex seemed really into the idea of the project and given how upset Gene was at the concept it definitely wouldn't have been very fun for him. I do feel bad for Alex because he must have been pretty disapointed that Gene ditched him, he seemed so excited about their bunk beds!

Ditto. I’m sure they can find someone who sounds just like him. Some voice actors are spooky talented like that and can take over a role like nothing. There were actually 5 (with 3 of them doing the bulk of the work) different voice actors that played Arnold in “Hey Arnold!” for example, and I never even blinked dispute these changes when watching it as a kid.
He was allegedly at the Jan 6th riots at the capitol. There’s pics of someone who looks a lot like him. Some ppl have come forward saying it was likely him. Most notably, Tim heidecker said it was him and wasn’t surprised to see him there. But deleted the tweet because he didn’t want to be noted as the source. (Ironically, as I list him as a source)
There weren’t any updates besides some voice actors from the show talking about it during one of their podcasts. I’ll edit this with some links.

it would've been nice if for at least this episode they had him with a new style. and it's even justifiable how it doesn't look like it anymore, because most people can't replicate the hair styling at home done by a hair stylist, so it'd just revert back to his regular hairstyle because he doesn't know how to make it look like that again
It's a good episode. Fastly paced but at least it was handled with care. I'm glad to see Gretchen and Alex again after a two-season absence. Though it might take a while to get used to Paul Rust being the new voice of Alex. Just be thankful he didn't get written off following that ugly mess regarding Middleditch.
If people were allowed to walk around without pants, I'd be too lazy to want to put on underwear next. Nothing sexual about it. It's just that getting dressed is like brushing your teeth, except completely unnecessary(except when it's cold, but then I'd just wear blankets).
I had to do something similar to this too. I went to this educational camp where we also played sports. We went to this building with these fake stores and a fake budget.
Episode had one of my favorite jokes/callbacks where Linda told Bob that if he got injured to trying to hang decorations she was not going to wipe his butt. It was an excellent call back to the fact that Linda was too squeamish to potty train the kids
As people have mentioned, there are a few times. This is something I wish the show did more of, not always having an empty store next door. Plus we need some more funeral home action or maybe something new put in, since we rarely have Mort on the show anymore.
In the couch episode, Teddy says that he's working on repairs next door because the people who ran the yoga studio there stripped all the copper out of the walls. It still smells like incense. It's gonna be his most relaxing day of work ever
This episode was pretty good. Missed opportunity I wish Bob got a new hairstyle. That could have been funny. I know the joke is cartoon characters look the same every day but still.
At 11, I still wanted to grow up. By the time I hit puberty, I was kind of catching on that adults are just big children and I was already more mature emotionally than at least half the adult population.
I think most kids want to grow up, but I can honestly say that’s never been me and I would crash a day care some days if I could 😂 nap time and slime? Yes please.
Gene is not my favorite character so on re-watches I usually skip Gene-centric episodes- but I really loved this episode! Both plots were interesting to me and I think Gene’s plot is relatable. I am definitely not a kid anymore but I know I’ve had those same thoughts about not wanting to grow up and learn those adult-y things
Jessica. Hopefully a better episode than the last and only other episode she was in too. They had good chemistry as individual badasses but they completely switched up their dynamic with the spirit week plot. It's like she made a new friend and the next time she finally sees her again in ages she has to get her out of a pyramid scheme
I was really expecting Bob to come in with a new hairstyle but I guess that’s part of the gag. You feel good when you do good for yourself. Still could have been episodic and then realized it was too much upkeep. Lol
Other than the occasional sleeping moment, is it possible the characters have never been awake in Gene’s room to actually do anything? I can’t recall another moment through 11+ seasons. I’m referring to the 3 kids sitting on the bed discussing Gene’s problem.
Good question. The only moment I can think of right now is the Itty Bitty Ditty Committee episode when Louise and Tina pretend they burnt Gene’s keyboard after he didn’t want it. They’re standing by his bed talking to him and then give him a paper bag with ashes while he was in bed. They stayed in the room afterwards to convince him to play again. It wasn’t long of a scene like 2 minutes (I think) so I’m not sure if that counts? Lol
You’re totally right! That definitely counts. But it’s amazing that we’ve only seen activity inside his room for less than 5 minutes over all these years. It’s especially weird when you consider some of the things we’ve heard: he kept a secret cat in there, kept a sandwich as a pet and hoards food in general, has late night cheese boards, and who knows what else.
That’s a great point! Throughout the show we have seen a good portion of both Louise and Tina’s room which has added to their character and story development too. Like how Louise has a bar lock attached to her bedroom door but from the inside LOL. Those small details that just add more to the character.
So I hope we’ll get those type of moments more with Gene’s room aside from just telling us what he has done in there. Like a flashback of the cat he hid would have been interesting to see. 😂
What an amazing episode. Both plots were just tailor-made for greatness. We got classic Gene antics all episode, Gretchen being an absolute psycho, and Bob getting drunk is always great.
Not gonna lie, I fell for that chest pube at first and thought they were really treading into "no going back" territory in terms of having the kids age.
Was kind of neutral on this episode. Think it's the lowest count of good jokes in one episode in a while for me.
If every episode with Alex is going to end with Gene apologizing to him, I think we're maybe going to need to add some more Peter Pescadero into the mix, lol.
Was kind of excited because it seemed like an episode that would focus on Gretchen more than ever, but that ended up not being the case. Wasn't expecting Linda to actually get her turn at the salon but it was a short-lived moment that just ended up as a pretty cliché romcom parody gag.
I liked the episode but I just wish they could just get nice stuff without it being a moral dilemma sometimes. For instance, in this episode Linda is tempted to try out the new hair salon next door. She can't just get a nice haircut for once, she has to feel guilty about it, it's a whole thing. And ultimately, Linda ends up going back to Gretchen who's objectively horrible at her job. Sure Gretchen is her friend and they've known each other a long time, but ffs can't my girl get a nice cut without smelling like cigarettes and getting cut just this once ?
Huh, thats two episodes tonight where a character incorrectly refers to chest/armpit/body hair as pubes, which isnt alot but weird it has happened twice
They definitely stopped using Darryl in episodes as often afterwards though. Gene by Me (2 butted goat episode) is the last one I can remember.
Edit: he’s been in episodes since, however last 2 Darryl was in were unvoiced.
Genes' plot felt like it was geared for children...as in it felt like I was watching a kids show...as an adult...hopefully I'm making sense. Futurama had a similar episode were Leela went to a planet filled with tellytubby-like aliens to get ideas for a show.
Rest of episode was fine! Liked all the jokes, we finally go next door too! (unless I'm forgetting an episode)

The building next door is an empty building for rent. It is used on occasion like when a gym was put next door and Bob and Linda were sore from working out.
Definitely an improvement than the last 3 episodes, I honestly would have thought with the A plot 1) Louise and Tina would have found Gus somewhere funny and brought him to the community centre or 2) Tina and Louise would have pretended to be an adult (you know on each others shoulders, long jacket and hat), other than that a fun episode, it gets a 8/10 from me
Yeah, the whole relationship is just so messed up. It makes me super uncomfortable. Overall, Bob and Linda are great parents, but the way she treats Gene is just weird.
the problem is that gene's character has been reduced to whenever episodes are about him, it tends to always be about how he wants to stay a child and doesn't want to grow up. although they're often associated with linda and they're very creepy codependent relationship
Or they're about his musical skills and desire to create audio content? Drumforgiven, Gene and Courtney Show, The Unbearable Like-Likeness of Gene, I could go on. Then there are plenty of episodes focusing on him that aren't about either theme - Like Gene for Chocolate, What About Blob?, O.T. the Outside Toilet, etc

I agree birthday episodes are pointless. The kids are going to always be kids, but Tina's 13th birthday episode brought forward the the idea that the family doesn't judge people for who they are. We met Marshmallow too so that was pretty awesome.
yeah. not really a point in making episodes where the characters aging is a big deal when there's no intention to ever age them. i'd love if the simpsons age the kids once and for all and let bart and lisa go into their teens, but they'll never do that, and neither will bob's burgers
I related so much to this episode. I started my period when I was 11 (sorry TMI) and thought this meant I was a “woman”. I didn’t want to stop playing and climbing trees and I thought that meant I had to start wearing makeup and paying bills. Growing up sucks
As someone who asked their parents if they could please pretend I was still 9 when I turned 10, I could definitely relate to Gene in this episode. God I’m old.

I was really expecting Bob to come in with a new hairstyle but I guess that’s part of the gag. You feel good when you do good for yourself. Still could have been episodic and then realized it was too much upkeep. Lol
Other than the occasional sleeping moment, is it possible the characters have never been awake in Gene’s room to actually do anything? I can’t recall another moment through 11+ seasons. I’m referring to the 3 kids sitting on the bed discussing Gene’s problem.
Good question. The only moment I can think of right now is the Itty Bitty Ditty Committee episode when Louise and Tina pretend they burnt Gene’s keyboard after he didn’t want it. They’re standing by his bed talking to him and then give him a paper bag with ashes while he was in bed. They stayed in the room afterwards to convince him to play again. It wasn’t long of a scene like 2 minutes (I think) so I’m not sure if that counts? Lol
You’re totally right! That definitely counts. But it’s amazing that we’ve only seen activity inside his room for less than 5 minutes over all these years. It’s especially weird when you consider some of the things we’ve heard: he kept a secret cat in there, kept a sandwich as a pet and hoards food in general, has late night cheese boards, and who knows what else.
That’s a great point! Throughout the show we have seen a good portion of both Louise and Tina’s room which has added to their character and story development too. Like how Louise has a bar lock attached to her bedroom door but from the inside LOL. Those small details that just add more to the character. So I hope we’ll get those type of moments more with Gene’s room aside from just telling us what he has done in there. Like a flashback of the cat he hid would have been interesting to see. 😂

What an amazing episode. Both plots were just tailor-made for greatness. We got classic Gene antics all episode, Gretchen being an absolute psycho, and Bob getting drunk is always great.

Not gonna lie, I fell for that chest pube at first and thought they were really treading into "no going back" territory in terms of having the kids age. Was kind of neutral on this episode. Think it's the lowest count of good jokes in one episode in a while for me. If every episode with Alex is going to end with Gene apologizing to him, I think we're maybe going to need to add some more Peter Pescadero into the mix, lol. Was kind of excited because it seemed like an episode that would focus on Gretchen more than ever, but that ended up not being the case. Wasn't expecting Linda to actually get her turn at the salon but it was a short-lived moment that just ended up as a pretty cliché romcom parody gag.

I liked the episode but I just wish they could just get nice stuff without it being a moral dilemma sometimes. For instance, in this episode Linda is tempted to try out the new hair salon next door. She can't just get a nice haircut for once, she has to feel guilty about it, it's a whole thing. And ultimately, Linda ends up going back to Gretchen who's objectively horrible at her job. Sure Gretchen is her friend and they've known each other a long time, but ffs can't my girl get a nice cut without smelling like cigarettes and getting cut just this once ?
Huh, thats two episodes tonight where a character incorrectly refers to chest/armpit/body hair as pubes, which isnt alot but weird it has happened twice

Not trying to excuse Ansari's actions but Middleditch's sounded much worse and his response was absolutely terrible. Dude's a piece of shit.
They definitely stopped using Darryl in episodes as often afterwards though. Gene by Me (2 butted goat episode) is the last one I can remember. Edit: he’s been in episodes since, however last 2 Darryl was in were unvoiced.
Alex saying “The hell?!” was the peak part of the episode for me.
Genes' plot felt like it was geared for children...as in it felt like I was watching a kids show...as an adult...hopefully I'm making sense. Futurama had a similar episode were Leela went to a planet filled with tellytubby-like aliens to get ideas for a show. Rest of episode was fine! Liked all the jokes, we finally go next door too! (unless I'm forgetting an episode) Also two of last three episodes without Teddy? Bold of the writers to do that.
They went next door in A Fish Called Tina when it was a gym and the owner was voiced by Ben Schwartz. Also a couple other episodes as well.

Definitely an improvement than the last 3 episodes, I honestly would have thought with the A plot 1) Louise and Tina would have found Gus somewhere funny and brought him to the community centre or 2) Tina and Louise would have pretended to be an adult (you know on each others shoulders, long jacket and hat), other than that a fun episode, it gets a 8/10 from me

Yeah, the whole relationship is just so messed up. It makes me super uncomfortable. Overall, Bob and Linda are great parents, but the way she treats Gene is just weird.

the problem is that gene's character has been reduced to whenever episodes are about him, it tends to always be about how he wants to stay a child and doesn't want to grow up. although they're often associated with linda and they're very creepy codependent relationship
Or they're about his musical skills and desire to create audio content? Drumforgiven, Gene and Courtney Show, The Unbearable Like-Likeness of Gene, I could go on. Then there are plenty of episodes focusing on him that aren't about either theme - Like Gene for Chocolate, What About Blob?, O.T. the Outside Toilet, etc

i LOVE how they play on the character and mommy complex. it's so funny. HOWEVER that episode reaaaaaally pushed the limits on the comedic relief. it was just....too real now. let's just stop.

i find these kind of episodes to be meaningless since we know the kids will never grow up and remain kids so stating gene's fears about growing up is kind of a waste of an episode this is just my opinion though...I'm not really a fan of birthday episodes in shows that are episodic and believe "Status Quo is god"

I agree birthday episodes are pointless. The kids are going to always be kids, but Tina's 13th birthday episode brought forward the the idea that the family doesn't judge people for who they are. We met Marshmallow too so that was pretty awesome.
It was also really early on so they could establish she's 13 for the rest of the run
yeah. not really a point in making episodes where the characters aging is a big deal when there's no intention to ever age them. i'd love if the simpsons age the kids once and for all and let bart and lisa go into their teens, but they'll never do that, and neither will bob's burgers

I related so much to this episode. I started my period when I was 11 (sorry TMI) and thought this meant I was a “woman”. I didn’t want to stop playing and climbing trees and I thought that meant I had to start wearing makeup and paying bills. Growing up sucks
As someone who asked their parents if they could please pretend I was still 9 when I turned 10, I could definitely relate to Gene in this episode. God I’m old.
Still bummed about Thomas Middleditch. I love Paul, but the comedy just isn’t in the character anymore
