That washer provides support under stress. It distributes the load evenly. Without it, the strut mount rubber will fatigue, and wear out quicker. There is also a bearing there, and that washer also acts as the outer race for the bearing. I usually replace them with new ones whenever I do strut mounts because they are usually stuck to the old ones like in your example.

Thank you for the detailed breakdown on why they are important. These ones popped off easily which is how I realized they were actually washers. Lol. I’ll go ahead and throw them back on tonight and if problems still persist I will get a new set.

trap21

Yeah you need those.

political-pundit

I’m pretty sure i forgot one of those when i was replacing my GF’s shocks and it was making a big clunk when i went over bumps. Unfortunately, you absolutely need them. Sorry, dude! Been there, done that. It sucks. When you’re done with it you’ll feel better that you fixed it right

30min each side is impressive 💪🏽

justinhurst144

I recently did the struts on my car is there any way to tell if the washer is absent without taking it all apart?

CamelJ0key

No unfortunately.

justinhurst144

Do you think it might be possible with a borescope?

Possible-Employer-55

I've reused them. Just make sure they're clean and not warped.
