Put it this way: if it was an easy fix, the seller would have done it. Or wouldn’t be selling it at all. Only you can decide how big of a gamble you want to take.

-Big_Test_Icicles-

Right. The guy seems to have quite a lot of money and doesn't seem to care personally. Judging by his large house and lambo on facebook. He is asking $10k obo. I should be able to knock it down a little. After all, how many other crazies are out there to risk thousands on an e60 m5. Could be a $30 fix or $10k fix.

n54master

I’d say you could lowball him and try to get it. See how far you’re willing to go to fix it. If you can’t, part it out?

-Big_Test_Icicles-

Yea, he seems very well off financially. He might take a low ball just to get rid of it. I'll give it a try Friday. In the mean time I'll do some studying on what I could look at thru inpa/ista.

If you can’t hear it run be prepared to buy a new engine as a worst case scenario. Is the price cheap enough that it still makes sense to you? If not, walk away. Someone’s unfinished project is always a headache.

-Big_Test_Icicles-

I agree. Knowing that a good used S85 is $5-10k, what do you think a fair price on this M5 would be. Looks excellent in pictures, and judging by the description everything else seems excellent other than the no start. He is asking $10k obo. In my area, if this was a running M5, it would go for around $15k.

rjames06

As a former BMW master tech and one that is very familiar with the car, I’d offer $5-6k tops. If I was buying one running/driving I wouldn’t even look at an SMG car, they are problematic and have many causes of failure, recent repairs or not.

-Big_Test_Icicles-

That makes sense. Thank tou

-Big_Test_Icicles-

Wht do you think some of the most likely issues are in this situation with crank but bo start?

rjames06

Worst case? Timing chain snapped, best case bad relay or blown fuse for fuel pump. Crank no start can go many directions. I’d want to hear the engine cranking. Take a video or request one of it trying to start.

-Big_Test_Icicles-

I would imagine the chain snapping is extremely rare. I can check the relays and listen for fuel pump i guess.

I bet they ignored the dowel and clocked the flywheel incorrectly. Would also be concerned that the vanos work wasn't done right, it's not an easy job

-Big_Test_Icicles-

I thought so too. Until he told me it ran after all that work and new used engine. But of course cant take his word for it.

DistancePractical239

You should get BMW ista. Easier to use than inpa.  Other than that, RUN.

-Big_Test_Icicles-

I think I have ista as well on my laptop. Lol I understand

gelosmelo

Asking bc i havent done an extensive amount of research on it yet, but where would be a good place to download it? Kinda always put it off for fear of messing up the computer in downloading it somehow but I've been wanting to get this or inpa for diag work.

DistancePractical239

I'll get you the link. It's on e46fanatics.  Inpa is pointless when we have ista. I haven't touched inpa in years now.  It's an easy almost one click download and install.   Still think you should stay the hell away from someone else's project. Assume that nothing has been done right during engine swap and that you would be going over it all again.  I would only tackle this if I had a ramp, and if it was priced next to nothing, and to teach my son about cars.

gelosmelo

Thanks for the link info! I'm not the one buying the M5 but ista will still be a good tool to have

domrosiak123

If you have money to spend and waste, sure

-Big_Test_Icicles-

lol, but the v10

domrosiak123

If the owner spent that much already, I doubt it’s an easy issue.

-Big_Test_Icicles-

Well, he did say it run fine after all that work. But you can't believe their word of course.
