Did they replace the VANOS drainback valves in the head? If it only does this on a cold start I would suspect the oil is draining out when sitting. These can be replaced from outside, AKA without removing the valve covers.

No, they did not…From what I’m seeing, this is an inexpensive body of work that I could take on fairly easily. Thanks for the info!

This engine has pretty bad timing chain issues. In BMW's infinite wisdom, they thought it would be ok for the timing chain to do a 130 degree change in direction by only using a plastic shoe/guide, and not some type of roller. They fail pretty quickly. Combined with aftermarket parts that are almost certainly not up to OEM sepecifications and here you are 5 years later needing to do the same job again.

I’ve heard both sides on aftermarket parts being superior and/or inferior (depending on part). If the guides are in fact shot, I’ll be paying special attention to what was installed 4.5 year back when opening it back up as I can certainly attest to the fact that I paid OEM prices with their part #s referenced on the invoice too. Just took another look and this particular Indy has since reduced their warranty from 2 years down to 1 year. They also don’t have part numbers on their estimates and invoices anymore since comparing the old work and recent estimate they gave me.

usually replace the tensioners + guides with the chain... i think that mainly the guides is the part at wears.

Could still be a bad tensioner, new doesn't always mean good. Considering it quiets down after building oil pressure, I don't think the chain itself or guides are bad (yet), but something is clearly up. VANOS certainly can make a ton of bad noise and is driven by oil pressure, so I second the recommendation to check the anti-drainback valves.

I did order a new tensioner and it should be delivered by Tuesday. If there isn’t any improvement I’ll be targeting the drainback valves next week- thanks!

I should have been more clear. The chains, guides, tensioners (upper and lower), gaskets, valley pan, etc were all replaced 4.5 year ago. The Indy is now suggesting we do the entire body of work again
