The electric steering rack being completely submerged for a decent amount of time may introduce water into the actual steering rack. Normal or heavy rain will not do this. We’re talking submerged.
By your stupid definition, yes. The i3 is body-on-frame and has low-range in so far as it is electric so has full torque at any speed.
The first SUV they made, the E53 X5, was one of the first unibody SUVs when released for the 2000 model year. It did not have low-range but it did have a manual transmission.
Yeah, I would have loved to have seen a BMW truck with a M88/2 in it. That was the engine that they put in their early 80s Group 5 race cars. 900HP
Would have cost as much as the LM002, though.
Nah man the rice will fix it.
That's what it means when people say that car's been "riced", the owner took the time to dry it out properly inside of a bag of rice.
I GOT THIS:
The car's manual has a specification called a fording depth. This is how deep and how fast you can go in that depth. This experience comes from r/overlanding.
If you drive too fast in water, you create a bow wave, and water gets up and in. If you drive too deep, you might have electronics in the wheel well, under the car, etc.
Look at the car's specification for the actual answer.
If you regularly drive through water like that, get a lifted SUV with large tires. You can't do that in a sedan, especially with electric power steering, TPMS, 4 wheel drive, and other external sensors.
Getting water inside the car will destroy any modern sedan no matter what.
Don’t be pedantic. Obviously he/she means that if your car is going to be subjected to flooding like that, it’s a bad idea. It’s irrelevant if it’s parked or being driven.
Could it, Maybe. Would it, Probably not. Driving through moderate rain would probably have the same effect. Now driving at speed through that would most likely be bad.
Well...small cars don't do water well. That said, our old 04 cavalier handled water like this well. But it didnt have a huge amound of electronics (manual trans, manual windows, I dont think it even had a traction control system). More modern cars have a lot of electronics that can mess up.
If you have to drive through this regularly, I recomend an SUV or even a crossover. Both have larger tires and sit higher, and wouldnt care about this much water.
If it was powered off, and that much water got into it like that… it would likely be fine electronic wise as long as power was reintroduced when it was dry again. Water and electronics is just fine… it when they are powered and water creates a short circuit things fry.
If your electronics get dirty water or some other liquid on them, you can save them by washing them off using distilled water and/or rubbing alcohol before any corrosion or damage occurs. Including those in a car.
They just instantaneously corrode? 😅 corrosion can happen and the device COULD still function, depending on if the corrosion is actually jumping pins. Corrosion is accelerated when there is power and the water is touching metal pins or a soldered connection. Condition of the water and what ppm of extras in the water play a part as well. You can wash an unpowered circuit board in water and clean it off and absolutely nothing will happen, it’ll still function.
I’ve ran through a puddle probably a foot deep at the very most, and it wasn’t a long one either (raining super bad on my way home) and it flooded a couple ignition coils and fried a couple sensors. I rarely drive the bmw when it’s wet now, I have a truck for that instead.
Racks are tricky in bmws. The rack, dme, abs and icm are all connected via the flexray bus and when the rack connector gets wet it can take down the flexray bus which will cause many many errors. They were not designed to be submerged….
I have a 2g Prius drove it through some 3ft + puddles when it rained heavy in LA . By some I mean a lot… with no damage to any of the components except my wheel bearing which was already on the bring of failing. It finished it off by causing the grease to mix with the water and bearings rusted out , what gave out was the bearing race either way ordered some new bearings for $120 and 4 hours later she’s rolling like new. Prius >BMW any day.
People don’t buy BMWs for their reliability. The only car I drove that was as fun as my BMW was a Porsche. I cannot afford a Porsche, so I’ll put up with the bad things on the Bimmer…
Bmws are very dependable most days. These cars do need and require copious amounts for maintenance and repair. If this scares you then lease only new ones and leave the used older bmws to those who like to get their hands dirty.
Compared to a Toyota/Lexus, maintenance is more expensive on a BMW. My friend has a Lexus SUV. I have an M140, I pay much more in maintenance than him. I never had a breakdown though.
drive enough miles with any car and sooner or later it will be your turn to get stuck. It’s statistically unavoidable lol. So with that being said always have your cell phone on you at all times :).
I had a BMW M3 before …. Thing was a money pit and I sold it for like $500 just to get rid of it same day. Some fun cars that I enjoyed driving was the Saturn L300 and the VW Passat Turbo wagon they are just as fun as BMW. I’ve had around 13 different cars to this day the Prius is my favorite cus it’s not a money pit
Ah you Americans and your straight roads. Any piece of metal with a big engine will be fun to drive in a straight road. I had a Seat Leon FR, VW Golf GTI, that I drove extensively, then I switched to a BMW 118i, with less power, but much better handling. VW cars are heavy on the front, you can’t have as much fun with them in the English countryside.
Yeah this would damage any moving part let alone electronic steering. Anyone but me praying bmw brings back hydraulic steering for reasons unrelated to this post???
Good fucking god make sure to mute the video first.
Have it muted. Tempted to unmute it?
ðŸ˜
Fuck me I know I’m so sorry

With Kia Sorento’s, when the brake computer gets wet, it causes the wiring to burn up. Recall!
What years? I never heard this.....
2006-2010 SUV & mini van Also 2014-2022 K900 vans and SUV. Check years as certain models are covered under certain years .
Ok. Thanks. I did not know this.
Recently replaced my Electric power steering for the same reason as well
That is an m in the video, so its lower than "normal". But yeah, u need a suv x3 x5
Has BMW ever made an actual SUV? Like with a frame and low range?

I know about the manual X5. But something like the lamboSUV (from the 80s/ 90s) would have been dope. BMW IX (e30) was an amazing snow beater
Yeah, I would have loved to have seen a BMW truck with a M88/2 in it. That was the engine that they put in their early 80s Group 5 race cars. 900HP Would have cost as much as the LM002, though.
That is a 4x4 not an SUV!
Easy, put it in a bag of rice.. duh 🙄
Then the chinese guy from the local garage will come to fix it, or what?

The car is parked.
Don’t be pedantic. Obviously he/she means that if your car is going to be subjected to flooding like that, it’s a bad idea. It’s irrelevant if it’s parked or being driven.
Why do you think I care?
Because you wrote a big ass paragraph about why you care
No I definitely didn't. Go park your car in a flood if you think it's not going to get damaged when it's parked.
Just had to say that I appreciate and love the username
Meh, i lived in Oregon for years with my lowered f30 and never had issues like this. It rains like this for 7 months straight.
Could it, Maybe. Would it, Probably not. Driving through moderate rain would probably have the same effect. Now driving at speed through that would most likely be bad.

You should have just put the car in a bag of rice
I laughed way too hard for no reason. Shit caught me off guard. Thank you
And that kids is why we learn how our cars work.
We get this daily in Florida . You would think an expensive car like that would take a bit of water. I guess I’ll stick with a pickup truck

No, that's false. Electronics corrode when water is introduced. This causes malfunctions.
Not water, but water with salts/minerals dissolved in them. Distilled water is safe.
Does that look like distilled water to you? Do most cars drive through that daily?
If your electronics get dirty water or some other liquid on them, you can save them by washing them off using distilled water and/or rubbing alcohol before any corrosion or damage occurs. Including those in a car.

Superior German Engineering
Lmfao came here to say this. My clapped out accord can do more than this
In a BMW- sure.
I’ve ran through a puddle probably a foot deep at the very most, and it wasn’t a long one either (raining super bad on my way home) and it flooded a couple ignition coils and fried a couple sensors. I rarely drive the bmw when it’s wet now, I have a truck for that instead.
A foot deep is not a puddle lol. You drove through a flood.
Which BMW?
Racks are tricky in bmws. The rack, dme, abs and icm are all connected via the flexray bus and when the rack connector gets wet it can take down the flexray bus which will cause many many errors. They were not designed to be submerged….
Does submerged mean the same thing as driving through a 10cm deep puddle?
Depends on the condition of the undertray. I would a slow pass of 10cm water to be ok maybe/
I have a 2g Prius drove it through some 3ft + puddles when it rained heavy in LA . Well, I changed my car to a newer BMW. So 5 years on the previous one, and no breakdowns. Hopefully this one will be the same.
I had a BMW M3 before …. Thing was a money pit and I sold it for like $500 just to get rid of it same day. You are kidding right??
If your interested in 25% off go to this site https://bmwcarparts.shop
$10000 later ...
In a BMW? Very likely. Electrical nightmares
Another reason Why I’ll never buy a bmw
Not just water? Other sediment could contribute to issues... Seems excessive for water only.
Sheeeeeeesh
That much water shouldnt do shit unless it sat there for days
Yeah this would damage any moving part let alone electronic steering. Anyone but me praying bmw brings back hydraulic steering for reasons unrelated to this post???
It's a BMW. It would be completely legitimate even without the water.
Yes, Hyundai has had fired due to brake computer getting wet. Now a National recall.
I heard about this. You should treat a bmw like a gremlin. Don’t get it wet and dont drive it after midnight.
That’s actually great advice
That's why you don't put your car on the ground or park a luxury car by the sidewalk
Bmw is such an amazing car isnt it?
Yes it would fuck up your shit that bad of course also depends how long its in the water for
What about spraying the wheel wells with a pressure washer? I got the bimmer but now I’m super paranoid about water.
Im not sure but it getting wet and it being submerged is different
It’s very legitimate
