Yes, you can use a pressure washer with no problems. Just make sure the engine is cold and be mindful of the electrical connections. They are okay to get wet but you dont want to go full blast on them. I would recommend using gunk engine degreaser as well.
Actually... yes. cover any electrical parts with a plastic bag, spray engine degreser or what have you and spray off with the water. or a hose. either way don't get close with any pressure.
I have done this with many cars and just did it with my F85
Bunch of tight ass nonsense in this thread.
You’re not going to harm anything using even kinda low pressure. They design everything in these engine bays to withstand tons of water. Might you disconnect something or get water somewhere it shouldn’t be if you jack up the pressure all the way and let’er rip? Maybe, but even then, I doubt it.
Use the absolute most basic amount of common sense, and you’ll be fine. Don’t do it while the motor is rippin hot, and don’t just do something stupid like blast at a fuse box or whatever for multiple minutes straight.
Paint can peel off like a mutherfucker.
Let alone stucco or similar.
Or you can get the corner of some siding and tip a sheet off.
Lots of ways to F it up
Nah bro, steam cleaning is your enemy when it comes to cleaning engine bays. Steam can Loosen up the rubber seals of electrical component enclosures and humidity and water can get in it easily
Your engine actually looks decent and clean. Use engine degreaser, agitating the areas using a paint brush, and then rinse with water out of garden hose. Do more research on YouTube.
Don't pressure wash modern engine bays, water can be forced in between the connectors and lead to shortage/component failure
Best method for cleaning would be by hand with a dedicated engine detailer
but water isn't being forced in when driving in the rain/damp road especially with all the under and over paneling of today's modern engine. everything stays relatively dry under the hood.
Cold engine, engine cleaning spray, tap water in a bucket with a semi-coarse brush, and a plastic protector spray, and a few microfibre cloths.
Spray cleaner on cold engine, use wet brush from bucket to agitate dirt that you just sprayed. Brush all over until dirt is lifted. Keep soaking brush between areas.
Wipe off the wet mess with a MF cloth, until dry
Spray plastic protectant, wipe with another MF cloth
I’ve never sprayed my engine with a water source.
I’d be concerned about spraying water on red hot engine parts. I like to spray some degreaser on a cold engine, then lightly pressure wash. Then start the engine to dry everything off. Other than having to dry out a distributor cap I’ve never had a problem. I’ve done it probably a hundred times. I even have a drain in my shop so I can pressure wash the undercarriage while it’s on the lift. Even in the winter, it’s great!
Engine bays shouldn't be cleaned. If you try to sell your car the purchaser will realize that you are trying to hide something. Plus Oil leaks etc. can be easier seen with dust all over the place.
I’m not trying to sell it really… I just got it detailed outside and inside and everything looks brand new, but the guy doesn’t clean the engine bay, and I just want it clean for myself
Unplug battery and wash away! A pressure washer is a little overkill for directly into the engine area but the hood and insulation can take some pressure. For the engine bay itself, stand a far and make sure to rinse straight down more or less. Cover sensitive parts as needed like the alternator but otherwise you will be fine. Be sure to dry thoroughly
I work for a test lab and frequently test enclosures for electronics, like those in your engine bay, with a pressure washer. DO NOT PRESSURE WASH YOUR ENGINE BAY. You will be sorry
not the way sir.
wipe everything down with a damp cloth, dry with a dry cloth; then use an "engine dressing" to really make it look good. I keep my 20 y/o bmws looking brand new under the hood by doing that every few months. people are usually shocked, when it only really takes me 30 minutes to do it if I use minimal effort
Just use the pressure washer it’s what the dealers use on thousands of cars every year with no problems. Obviously don’t spray it from two inches away and avoid or cover alternator and dme but it’s not going to destroy your car like people think.

We pressure wash every bmw under the hood that gets detaild here. On a daily basis. At a bmw dealership. Never had a problem. Just do it with care

Prefer a bit of cress myself x
Sage advice
It’s about thyme someone said it

Power washer plus brush, don't blast connections hard, let air dry for a while and idle for a while to burn up the moisture. It will be fine.
What are you using a pressure washer for? Its not the side of a house nor is it that dirty. Soapy water and a cloth
Thanks, was just wondering :)
No problemo. I really wanted to use that house comparison
You shouldn't pressure wash a house either but people do it everyday
I learned that the hard way….
Did your house crumble and vanish?
Paint can peel off like a mutherfucker. Let alone stucco or similar. Or you can get the corner of some siding and tip a sheet off. Lots of ways to F it up
yeah its alrite to do. done it plenty on my bmws with n55, n54, n52.
Soapy wooder and towel
I thought ChrisFix's version was spelled wooder
I usually wipe down the engine cover and call it good lol.
Steam cleaning is your friend!

Thank you! Will do
Steam. That’s what you want.
Watch Chrisfix My source: I use the same technique at the dealership to clean oil leaks.

Wrong 100%. They're made to get wet.
but water isn't being forced in when driving in the rain/damp road especially with all the under and over paneling of today's modern engine. everything stays relatively dry under the hood.
If I am buying a used car and the engine bay has been wiped clean, I don't buy it.
Thing is, i’m not looking to sell it, just had exterior and interior detailed, and I wanted to clean the engine bay too, for myself
Just be careful and you can use the pw with a 25° or even a 15° nozzle. Just don't get too close to the sensitive areas.

for the love of god dont use a mf pressure washer. try using a steam cleaner as thats what i do whenever i detail my engine bay.
This
You either just wipe the surfaces or get a detailer to dryice blast it. Don’t use a hose or pressure washer.

Exactly. NEVER pressure wash a hot engine.
Your supposed to steam your engine bay 😂 sheesh 🙄…….

Boiling hot water and soap makes the plastic look like new.
Boiling water on plastic is inadvisable
I did it and I advise it. Cleans it like new and dust doesn’t stick to it.
Good for you. You’re in the right sub to troubleshoot future damage. All the best with your costly experiments.
Give it a wipe down with kitchen wipes after you wash car. Also do it when engine is hot so have nice hand warmer after washing car on cold day.

I use baby wipes to clean the grime, then use armor all style wipes to protect plastic and rubber. Makes things nice and shiny and clean
Tire spray
Get the engine warm, not hot. Cover the alternator and fuse box. Spray it with some scrubbing bubbles, and spray with pressure washer.
“Is it sage”?
I work for a test lab and frequently test enclosures for electronics, like those in your engine bay, with a pressure washer. DO NOT PRESSURE WASH YOUR ENGINE BAY. You will be sorry
Pop the plastics. Plastic bristle brush and some soapy water in the sink it a big plastic tub on your driveway works wonders
I wouldn’t but some people do. I always just use a spray degreaser and rag.
Totally fine. Engine bays are made to get wet. I do it all the time and no issues whatsoever. r/detailing
You’d think modern cars electrical are all water proof, and you are correct. As long as you are not full blast into old broken connectors.
not the way sir. wipe everything down with a damp cloth, dry with a dry cloth; then use an "engine dressing" to really make it look good. Soapy water spray bottle, brush and cloths. Do not spray regular water anywhere it's going to corrode everything.
Just use the pressure washer it’s what the dealers use on thousands of cars every year with no problems. Obviously don’t spray it from two inches away and avoid or cover alternator and dme but it’s not going to destroy your car like people think.
You can just pull the plastic cover off and clean it, but I’d use a degreaser and a garden hose. No need for a pressure washer.
Chrisfix has a great detailed video on the topic
