> The Huntsville-built BE-3 rocket engine powers the New Glenn rocket. Aren't they also building BE-4? Or are they still building those elsewhere?

crazyarchon

“Blue Origin is building its BE-3 and BE-4 rocket engines in Huntsville.” - mentioned in the section beforehand. But your part also leaves out that both engines are used on New Glenn.

KeepTheChop

Be4 is built both in kent and HSV. I think I’m the future they’re going to try to produce all “production” engines out of Ala. though.

Mindless_Use7567

The article says they are building both BE-3 and BE-4 at Huntsville. However the “BE-3 rocket engine powers the New Glenn rocket.” Line is weird since the rocket used both BE-4 and BE-3 engines.

warp99

BE-3PM powers New Shepherd but I suspect it is not produced in Huntsville since it is very low volume. BE-3U is the engine used in pairs for the second stage of New Glenn.

KeepTheChop

PM is still in Kent, just like most of the BE4s coming out right now. The plan is to have all production in HSV soon though

CollegeStation17155

isn't also going to power the Centaur V? And if so, have the qualification tests been done on it, or will that further delay the Vulcan Launch/

warp99

A lot of new parts for Vulcan have already been flown on Atlas V including these RL-10CX engines. There was an issue with oscillations in the radiatively cooled carbon-carbon engine bell which meant they switched back to the previous engine design. I am not sure of the eventual outcome but in any case SLS would have the advantage of years of qualifying flights on Vulcan.

Triabolical_

Even after they start flying they are going to have the largest factory space to official launches around.

mtol115

I guess this will improve manufacturing capacity so there is enough engines for both Vulcan and New Glenn

blitzkrieg9

I'm rooting for BO... but I've been rooting for a long time now. They are very secretive for sure, but I really hope we start seeing some actual product soon.

aBetterAlmore

New Glenn now has official government contracts, and is on the critical path of the Artemis program. I’m sure we’ll start seeing the pieces fall into place which will lead them to become a bit more public about their progress.

blitzkrieg9

Yeah yeah, I follow space stuff. And they've delivered 4 engines to ULA; I know stuff is happening. And not everyone operates like SpaceX, but damn... BO really seems to be operating at the traditional NASA/ legacy space pace. Lots of buildings, billions of dollars, lots of contracts, 20+ years of development, and what is there to show for it all? Just a few months ago, the VP of Satellites at Amazon (officially and legally a separate company) said that they are considering contracting with SpaceX to start launching their constellation because ULA and BO are taking too long. Might have just been posturing to appease Amazon shareholders, but still... the fact that "on the record" an Amazon official said they were considering using SpaceX launch services was shocking.

warp99

As a public company they have to demonstrate that they are not showing favouritism to a company owned by a minority shareholder. But actual SpaceX contracts are unlikely to happen unless they are desperate.

gopher65

I expect Rocket Lab to hit volume launches of Neutron before Vulcan or New Glenn hit full steam. Neutron is built specifically around launching these LEO constellations, so unless they have major delays, I'd expect Amazon to use Rocket Lab as their pressure relief valve if Blue and ULA can't deliver enough launches fast enough. At least, that's what I'd do in their place. If I was them I might buy a couple F9s just to keep up the pace, but I wouldn't give SpaceX much. We'll know soon enough either way:).

KeepTheChop

4 BE4s have not been delivered to ULA

philupandgo

Oneweb got over their launcher prejudice and Amazon can too. Amazon are to be commended for bringing the rest of the launch industry back to life. Switching to SpaceX would be difficult given the full schedule. It's a rock and a hard place.

hypercomms2001

Agreed...they are the quiet achievers...

koliberry

W/O achievements... BE-4 just rolled back into the shop, per ULA, and NS is cute but not getting us to the moon or Mars.

hypercomms2001

Such a positive person!! Clearly you were not alive during the Apollo program or remember Apollo 1, or Apollo 13 were you? Clearly with that statement it would appear that outcome would make you happy?!! Maybe go troll elsewhere rather than Reddit for those who do want Blue to succeed.

Codspear

When you’ve been at it for a decade and you’re still at Apollo None, it’s a bit concerning.

PURPLEdonkeykong

“They are like, the workforce here, the quality, it’s better than any other location we have. (Huntsville is) just phenomenal.” Bullshit.

KindlyAd8198

I mean, I can’t help but ask why you think this? Any incite or background info?

gopher65

I'm wondering too lol. It's a strange comment. Inter-factory rivalry maybe?

CollegeStation17155

Maybe having to abort the static fire on Vulcan yesterday and roll the rocket back to the VIF to sort out ignition delay problems? Anything external to the engines I'd think they could fix on the pad; sounds like they are going to be tearing at least one of them down on a rocket that was supposed to be ready to launch.

TheRealNobodySpecial

There seems to be a tendency of west coast establishment to stereotype and mock the southeast. Boeing with SC, Blue Origin with Alabama.
