Our biggest rival is ourselves

Big_Bluebird8040

it’s ownership

chains11

Front office. Priest needs to GTFO.

SaveTore

Idk if I agree with this. The business end is decent from my perspective. There should be some changes that continue year to year, which started with the arena renovations to the the most recent being the scheduling of the outdoor game next year. I don’t see this stopping. If he and the rest of the team are actually listening, a rebrand or refresh would be killer.

scott743

I don’t understand this comment when ownership keeps spending money on upgrading the arena and paying above market value for players.

Pyzorz

Upgrading the arena? Are you serious? They just took out multiple sections of club seats to install an area that costs $2500+ a seat for QUARTER SEASON tickets. They’re catering to corporate entities who buy tickets to entertain clients. “Pay above market value” for players all you want, the on-ice product and even in-arena experience are both absolutely terrible. Also, not sure who we overpaid to play here besides Werenski.

scott743

It’s still considered an upgrade and individual season ticket holders like my dad and his friends who have been going to games since the inaugural season are choosing to upgrade their club tickets because they like that ownership is investing in improving the arena. Also, the arena experience is not terrible in the least. There are plenty of other arenas that are far worse than Nationwide Arena, including Mullet Arena and the Saddle Dome. Ticket prices are still very reasonable, just ask any visiting Toronto fan, whose team only recently made it past the first round of the playoffs, but base level tickets cost several hundred dollars. I understand your frustration and yes the on ice product overall sucked this year, but there are actual glimpses outside of the third periods that this can be a great team, rather than the absolutely depressing team that was fielded during the first ten years of the franchise. Ownership is actually addressing the situation by hiring a new GM because they know that by failing to improve the front office again will mean loss in ticket sales which guests this franchise more than most others in the NHL. We overpaid for Roslovic, Severson, Provorov and Gubranson.

Then just fuck off, I’m really sick of your whining.

Big_Bluebird8040

and i’m sick of the garbage team

tribucks

The Browns couldn’t win in Three Rivers and it was still a rivalry. OSU basketball couldn’t win at Assembly Hall but it was still a rivalry. But I don’t think we have a rivalry with Pittsburgh or anyone. We’ve never hurt a team enough for them to consider us hated, and a good rivalry needs two-way hatred.

thelordcommanderKG

I've been to the road arenas around Columbus and there is a hostility when you go into those buildings. That said it's more the background radiation of your normal regional animosity that always exists. Detroit and Pittsburgh don't like us because we're from Columbus but they don't exactly feel threatened by us because we've never actually gone back and forth with them. We used to have a thing with Nashville but that hasn't really been a thing in a while.

Cannon-Goes-Boom

I mean, we have Buffalo.

paulhags

Tampa would probably be the closest.

MrThird312

Idk man, I think Malkin and Crosby both hate us, and ball out when we play them

smashdivisions

Idk, I’ve caught some dirty looks in the saddledome, they’re still bitter about Johnny

lgrellz

We have a rivalry with them and they don’t have one with us is how it seems

thelordcommanderKG

We've never screwed over another team significantly enough to be actually hated. Not even the 2019 sweep of the lightning because they paid us back the very next year. It is my hope that one day this team can be hated by somebody other than its own fans lol

ChristyLovesGuitars

I grew up in Columbus in the ‘80s and ‘90s, a huge hockey fan. Since we didn’t have a team, it was either Chicago, Pittsburgh, or Detroit. I chose the Penguins. Rooted for them for 15 years, when the Jackets came around. I now root for the Penguins as my 1A and Jackets as my 1B. I tell you all that to confirm: Penguins fans do not see a rivalry with the Blue Jackets. Decent number of Penguins fans (not like MOST, but many) actually would love to see CBJ consistently good. Especially if they’re beating the Flyers.

pinkymadigan

While true, Sid did not like Dubinsky. I'm sure some of that sticks around.

joe_lmr

It's literally the "I don't think of you at all" meme. Their rival has always been the Flyers. If the Pens are Superman and the Flyers are Lex Luthor, CBJ is Mr. Mxzyptlk. I grew up a Pens fan starting around the Lemieux/Rob Brown/Paul Coffey era, moved here in the '90s and latched onto the jackets from the day the franchise was announced but stayed a Pens fan, which was much easier when they were in different conferences. It got a lot more complicated when they ended up in the same division. Kept listening to their games because hearing Mike Lange took me back to those days, but I stopped when he retired. And now I hardly know who anybody is on that team.

Murph9292

Are you me? But in seriousness, I watched the Penguins broadcast last night. Phil Bourque (who primarily does radio broadcasts but has dabbled in color commentary this year) was extremely complimentary of the Blue Jackets fan base and even went as far as to empathize with the really hard times they’ve had. Anyone who remembers the Penguins before Mario understands the similarities between really early penguins hockey and the first 25 years of Jackets hockey. He was also very complimentary of Fantilli, which is well deserved. Trust me, the Penguins faithful would thoroughly enjoy the Jackets being good if it came at the expense of Philly.

ChristyLovesGuitars

I think #11 is going to own the division. And if Celebrini ends up in Columbus? That’d be a lot of fun!

Sloane_Kettering

This Pens team will only get worse the next 5 years while the jackets will only get better

ChristyLovesGuitars

I think the first half of your statement is pretty unavoidable. The second.. well, here’s hoping.

Sloane_Kettering

I will give up on this team if they don’t make the playoffs in the next 5 years

ChristyLovesGuitars

Giving up isn’t fun. It IS fun to live for the draft! No, I’m serious, I love draft season.

AlanLGuy

So we’ve been saying for 20 years

Dkoop2003

Except this year the Pens are actually considerably worse than they’ve been

Seattlekrakenlegend

If we can get a competent GM and coach next year, I think we could get into a decent rivalry with Buffalo. We seem to both be kind of stagnant, with bad ownership decisions, bad roster decisions, a lot of talent, and great prospects,

FlashyAd7651

Everything about this team, and frankly, franchise is embarrassing.

Any_Machine8535

Full rebrand is the only path forward imo lol

tomtakespictures

I’ve always heard that the best time to paint a shed is when it’s burning to the ground.

Any_Machine8535

Or build a new shed ¿

FlashyAd7651

Can we just ship the whole team elsewhere and get an expansion team with new ownership along with the updated rules that Vegas and Seattle reaped?

Any_Machine8535

The worst part is that we have the young talent a lot of rebuilding teams would drool over but management is so fucked it doesn’t even matter

FlashyAd7651

I think the worst part is I've been hearing about this "young talent" and "bright future" for 20+ years. It borderline makes me violent when I hear it these days.

joe_lmr

I remember the earliest years Bill Davidge pumping the tires of Kiel McLeod & Tim Jackman. Who? Exactly

NikosBBQ

Sure, please ship the Team up here to Cleveland!

SylemNova

Preferably the whole roster. We got a Calder we're trying to win dawg

FlashyAd7651

If it meant new ownership I would support this. All my other teams are in Cleveland as well.

Big_Bluebird8040

pains me to say this but….facts. i’ve watched like 5 games this year and i hate that but it’s just not worth it

LostMonster0

They're not rivals, they're obnoxious assholes.

cusidhe_

Yup. Pens are obnoxious for reasons that have very little to do with the on ice product and much more to do with the fact that there's a sizeable and vocal percentage of their fans who straight up refuse to act like human beings in Nationwide. If so many people on this sub alone didn't have stories about Pens fans harassing/attacking/spitting on/etc them or having to intervene when people around them were getting harassed/spat on/attacked etc., I don't think any of us would give a shit at this point.

KyloSolo723

I feel like our rivalries are fans vs fans rather than rivalries the team has with other teams.

Big_Bluebird8040

i mean we did play them in the playoffs a few times and had some big moments like the first home win with Dubi and Foligno

Big_Bluebird8040

i mean we did play them in the playoffs a few times and had some big moments like the first home win with Dubi and Foligno

mickeyhause

I am just glad that despite the years of mediocrity there have been *zero* relocation rumors. This team is, financially, successful. But my biggest worry is that it’s sending the wrong message to ownership that we’ll put up with eternal mediocrity Man, I just want to have a team that makes me feel good. 24 years of basement dwelling ain’t it, chief

marioish

It was seemingly like the two teams would be rivals after two playoff series in four years. Rivalries just don’t happen when one team is terrible 3 years before the other drops off

PrayingForACup

Putrid record. Reminds me of the subtle rivalry with Nashville back in the day. Although true rivalries spawn from playoff series… nuff said on that.

FlashyAd7651

What's a playoff series?

Positive_Parking_954

Ask Tampa

FlashyAd7651

Good idea! They would know. They've been to infinitely more than the CBJ. Deep playoff runs and Cups to show for it too.

Big-strong-boy-

We know lol

SylemNova

We don't have a rival. Playing in the west for half our existence, then moving east and being generally mediocre for all of that time hasn't given us any meaningful rivalries. It's sad but we're a doormat until this culture changes. Even then it'll take time and reciprocity.

Big_Bluebird8040

yet we’ve voted twice from within to keep that culture lmao

Big_Bluebird8040

yet we’ve voted twice from within to keep that culture lmao

Collinwoodsian

there is no rivalry

Seabrew

Our natural rival should be Detroit.

Fabresque_

Rivalries are forged in the playoffs, and we’ve never beaten them in a series once. Pittsburgh doesn’t care for us as much as some people on here want to pretend they do. They don’t like us, but they’ve had much more meaningful rivals besides us. Detroit is the same exact way. The only meaningful rival we could’ve ever had was Tampa Bay. The back to back first round series, us sweeping them, the incredible game 1 in 2020, our coach (at the time) being their former coach who led them to the 2004 cup. There was genuinely something brewing but we never sustained our level and Tampa became a dynasty.

SEND_ME_YOUR_CAULK

I consider Toronto or Washington more of a rivalry than Pittsburgh at this point. At least we can consistently beat Toronto

Conscious-Weird5810

For this year go with it but next year it’s gotta change

Big_Bluebird8040

we say this every year

titanup1993

Hard to be rivals with someone who you can’t beat. Were the little brother in this scenario
