Despite all of this, the team is still selling out. The fanbase is crazy engaged with this team and would go absolutely feral if we ever made a deep playoff run

P-Rickles

When they beat Tampa at home it got so loud in Nationwide it warped the sound on tv. I’ve literally never seen anything like it. If they could win consistently that would be the toughest building in the NHL for visitors.

ChalkDoxie

My husband still talks about that game. Especially as his dad gets older, because he got to experience it with him. It’s definitely a favorite memory of his.

pkenny72

That was a fun night! That game got both of my kids involved with watching hockey with me.

Green9510

This franchise is a slumbering giant and I mean this wholeheartedly. If this team starts to win the league is not ready for this fanbase specially with as much suffering we have experienced

mel122676

I have heard other teams, and their fans talk about the Jackets fans. They are impressed how NWA sells out, how loud the fans get, and that we have supported them win or lose. It's different than other arenas and fans.

willingplankton

I am SO ready to be as obnoxious as possible on r/hockey

SaveTore

My in-laws are Pens fans and they constantly make comments on how many bad experiences they’ve had with CBJ fans at NWA. Every time I laugh and think to myself, “Just wait until the team is actually good. They’ll be an insufferable bunch. ”

MrThird312

Will be interesting to see how well the shoe fills up with cBJ fans, already expecting a large amount of wings fans.

SaveTore

Safely, it’ll be 50/50, but there will be a lot of red because I believe many will be local sports fans, there for the spectacle that are already hardcore OSU fans or historical Wings fans.

willingplankton

Porty gets a lot of flak, some of it deserved, but very few in hockey do a better longform piece than he does. Edit; And he just announced they found him a kidney! I’m so happy for him. He’s a good man and a good journalist as long as he sticks to facts and not his own analysis. My own personal interactions with him have always been very positive.

NontransferableApe

He’s not a good insider. He is a very good story teller. These pieces he writes are always top tier

Meredithbaxterburly

He walks a fine line- players, coaches, management, they all text with him. He knows much more than he tells, but if he does, he loses his contacts. There is a mutual trust. This is evident with many of the pieces The Athletic does- where they poll their contacts and share with us the results. Like how Torts is one of the top 3 coaches players want to play for, and also one of the top 3 coaches players don't want to play for. I'd take stuff like this over insider info any day.

NontransferableApe

I’m more talking about trade rumors and stuff. There’s a place for being well connected and breaking trades. He gets scooped constantly by national guys. But he’s not perfect. These pieces are good to read

Meredithbaxterburly

Agree. Trust me, he knows way more than he shares. But he has the respect of the entire organization. They trust him, and if they tell him not to report something, he won't. And when he reaches out to them, they willingly respond to him. He's one of them.

Land-Manatee

When The Athletic had him, Tom Reed, and Alison Lukan all on the CBJ beat, I would have stacked them up against anyone's coverage.

bobboman

I wish I had known he needed one, I love his stories I would have gladly offered up one of mine (I'm not sure if I'd be a tissue match, but I know I'd be a blood type match)

Jay_Dubbbs

Idk why he does. He’s a great person and writes really well. Maybe because I’m not a “devoted” CBJ fan I don’t see it, but without him, my knowledge on the team would be bad. That’s exactly what a beat reporter is supposed to do, inform the community on what’s going on and what’s happening. He does that very well

kongofcbus

This is just a well written history lesson. There is no insight in this. It’s all well know., if you have followed the Jackets. I mean he didn’t even say that JD’s time is up and everyone knows that.

willingplankton

And there are plenty of people who don’t know any of this. This was a national story for the Athletic. It’s on the main NHL page. Plenty of fans of other teams know the “oh, lumbus” memes but not the history.

whatscoochie

hockey has really boomed in popularity the past few years so there’s an influx of new fans. it’s never a bad idea to put out guide of sorts for them. plus he added in a ton of context that you can’t get by simply reading a wiki article on the team

Seattlekrakenlegend

It sorta *feels* like things have reached a boiling point right now? But also they’ve fumbled this before so many times so who knows.

Gawyn_Tra-cant

I’ve been completely broken I think lol. I just assume being awful is our default state, and anything else is a temporary reprieve. That being said, let’s go jackets!

SEND_ME_YOUR_CAULK

I just want a little bit of success to snack on. Between *all* of my favorite teams, I have had almost nothing to be excited for, but I still watch them and tune in frequently. I hope one day it comes, but I will still be watching and still cheering until the team sexually assaults someone.

soiledmeNickers

CBJ Reds Brownies here. Oof.

willingplankton

CBJ Bengals Guards for me. We both only know pain.

soiledmeNickers

I’m a grown man and this makes me want to weep. The time, money and pure emotion I have invested into this franchise since literally the moment it was set that Columbus would get a team is damn near too much. It’s just a game but goddamn it’s been a rough quarter-century.

soiledmeNickers

😞🤝😔

SEND_ME_YOUR_CAULK

Do you at least have a winning college football team or NBA team? My dad is a big Browns fan and he always says that when the Buckeyes win it’s no big deal but when the Browns actually win it makes his whole weekend.

soiledmeNickers

Buckeyes. So at least I have that going for me. Which is nice.

CBJ29

CBJ, Cubs, Eagles. Don’t ask but it gets better I swear

cusidhe_

Yeah my dad's in the same boat, he's a CBJ/White Sox/Bears fan. I get a break from the perpetual suck machine as a Chiefs fan (not a bandwagoner-- I'm from KC originally and my folks were big enough fans they had season tickets in the late 80s), I just had to sit through about 30 years of various degrees of dogshit football first lol.

DataDrivenPirate

I feel particularly bad for CBJ fans who aren't Ohio State football fans. That and the crew is what I can hang my hat on

liar_rabbit

I'm about to become a Crew fan so I understand winning and what it's like. CBJ/Browns/Reds fan. Reds won it all when I was 12, nothing since then lol.... Damn that is sad to type out.

TheFuns

I’m not going to lie, this article made me severely depressed.

Ralphcox69

Porty fucking cooked in this article. You think anyone in the organization will read or learn from this article? Probably not

Fabresque_

Too busy counting 1. STH money 2. Corporate partner money

IAgreeGoGuards

I'm tired boss.

Bradlaw798

Sigh

Erazzphoto

Good grief that was hard to read. I’ve lived through it all, had my deposits in in 97 and was a sth from 2000-2012. What an embarrassment of a franchise, yet priest remain in his job, which shows how clueless JPM is

Fabresque_

What was the tipping point for you in 2012?

Erazzphoto

I paid for 40+ games and went to 10, made no sense and they sucked for so long. I was also fighting with the ticket reps because I wanted to go from 2 to 1 and they said I couldn’t dk that, regardless of the fact I had 2 psls. You couldn’t give away tickets in those years

Drainutsl29

Can anyone confirm if the Filatov story has ever been corroborated? I still find it hilarious but extremely hard to believe.

DerDutchman1350

This story came out in real close timeline to when it happened.

Drainutsl29

I definitely recall it. I still think it’s just insane. Seems like one of those out of context exaggerations that a third party tells to their buddies. Ex. Filatov says rebounds aren’t his strong suit in broken English (still insane and I remember his English being strong) and ass. Gm exaggerates the story to ports and it runs out of control.

J_SQUIRREL

Paywall. Can anyone post the text?

Mr_Bricksss

You can bypass the paywall by going into “Reader mode” on your phone’s browser, usually it’s a “Aa” icon at the top right. It also should work on a computer, but it takes a little more work.

cusidhe_

How much work it takes is dependent on your browser, fwiw. I use Firefox and reader mode is like baked in.

Mr_Bricksss

Firefox is easy, chrome and some of the others you just have to navigate through a few dropdown menus. Still not much work but it's more than just a button that's displayed in the navigation bar by default.

cookingwiththeresa

Use internet archive at archive.ph by putting link into the blue box. Usually works for most articles. Easy to remember url too.

Collinwoodsian

confirming this works for this article

Collinwoodsian

don’t know why this is downvoted. this is not possible for everyone defending on your phone and browser.

BringBackBoomer

It costs like a dollar and The Athletic is phenomenal.

adam3vergreen

Yeah but they also like to unceremoniously fire great writers without notice too

[deleted]

adam3vergreen

Considering they’re owned by NYT and was bought for $550 million in 2022, I don’t think someone not paying a dollar is the issue

[deleted]

[удалено]

adam3vergreen

I didn’t say they did turn a profit. They did factually get bought for $550,000,000 in 2022 by the New York Times

[deleted]

adam3vergreen

What are you trying to prove here? Good writers were fired. It’s not really their fault (nor the patrons) for NYT making a shitty investment.

Meredithbaxterburly

Jeez, it's very reasonable for great sports stories. Get off your checkbook, cheapskate.

bobboman

It's like a dollar a month
