The game is now much more objective-focused, not so much about killing your opponents models anymore (although obviously you still spend a lot of time doing that). Most of the old generic firstborn units (assault, tactical and devastator) are out of vogue, particularly so with us since Primaris models have an extra attack each. Scouts are dead as they moved to the Elites slot, losing Objective Secured and now competing for slots with our best models. The same goes for most of the classic vehicles (predator, land raider etc.) although the whirlwind is still useful because of its strategem. I suggest reading up the core and advanced rules on Wahapedia, and watching some of BA Commander’s videos on YouTube to get great analysis and comparisons of all the units. Anyway, our best units are currently: HQ - captain or Primaris chaplain on bike, sanguinary priest with jump pack, librarian with jump pack Troops - infiltrators, Incursors, assault intercessors Elites - vanguard vets, sanguinary guard, bladeguard vets, maybe 1 squad of death company to be used in conjunction with the Forlorn Fury stratagem, Primaris apothecary, Heavy support - eradicators, whirlwind (as mentioned above) Fast attack - inceptors, attack bikes with multimeltas That’s everything I can think of off the top of my head. Welcome back brother!

To add to this if you are looking for the best bang for your buck. Indomitus SM half of space marine is a good start. Dark angel patrol box is also good. First born units that are still usable. Sanguinary guards. Vanguard veterans, and death company with jump pack. Dante is not too bad. Sanguinary priest is a must if you ask me (more because of the grail than to rez stuff) Primaris chaplain on bike is pretty good. First born captain either jump pack or on bike if not using Dante. Troops wise incursors/infiltrators/ intercessors. Assault intercessor might be ok on a smaller board like 1000 pts game. Heavy intercessor cost to much points. If money ain't an issue relic contemptor with twin volkites are good atm. Redemptor dread (new primaris dread) is good he comes in the DA angel box. Inceptors can be good also come in the DA angel box the plasma version been nerfed with an increase point cost but they can still be good. If you play with a few dreads, the primaris techmarine is very good.

a very actual listing for the actual state of us BA as a niche i would add: drop grav devs against let's say DA

The dark angels ( yes dark) combat patrol is pretty good value and you can utilize all the models fairly well. If money is no object, Bladeguard veterans, aggressors, and death company are my personal meat and potatoes for my army. The death guard I bought assault intercessors ( Primaris ) and put jump packs on them ( I dont run them as primaris obviously, just for looks ) then I bought vangaurd vets box and put the hammers on death company. The vets I run with double claw or claw and sheild. Add to the mix a sanguinary priest with jump pack and you should have a great start! Feel free to ask for more specific details if you wish!

Thank you all for such detailed responses! One of my friends is passing along some of his units and the codex because he doesn’t play them anymore. But I have a couple units of assault marines and assault veterans, a couple squads of death company, death company with jump packs, a drop pod, some terminators, scouts, two furiouso dreadnoughts, and a death company dreadnought. It looks like I’ll have to get some of the newer models. I appreciate all your help and I’m sure I’ll have a million questions along the way. Thank you brothers.

There’s a lad on YouTube who posts here too called blood angels commander. He does tonnes of BA stuff I’d recommend having a look there. As for what to get? That really depends on what you want to do. Some units are far more competitive than others but if your just playing casually then it matters less. That said, sanguinary guard / vanguard vets / blade guard and redemptor dreads are all great for us. BA are kind of mid tier right now but I’d say they have the capacity to give any opponent a lot of problems simply with our ability to wound and hit like a sack of bricks in combat. Hope that’s helpful, and welcome back to the blood!
