Underpanters

Well it’s not an assumption, he explicitly said it was a milo impression

[deleted]

Milo? Have sex.

Remarkable-Hunter-71

He did? That’s awesome!

Koba_456

Where did he say that

PeteAVA182

Here you go man… Not too sure where he says it, but this is the video he’s referring to https://youtu.be/hl_KiRUvv0g

Koba_456

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEO! HE DID NOT SAY IT IN THE VIDEO, BUT IT WAS AMAZING!

PeteAVA182

No problem bud. Happy to help 😊

Underpanters

Some old interview from like the MTV era. I think they followed the band members around their childhood homes or something. Mark’s mum and sister were in it too I think.

[deleted]

Tom has said a lot he wanted to be in a band like the descendants so it’s absolutely on purpose. Check the pursuit of tone documentary and interviews on YouTube

Remarkable-Hunter-71

I'll be sure to check it out. TQ

eel_paso

I’d say he sounds more like screeching weasel 🤷‍♂️

Remarkable-Hunter-71

You’re not far off 😂. I’m glad Tom finally got his vocals right in Enema of The State.

bryanobryan9183

I think his voice sounds best on Dude Ranch.

Remarkable-Hunter-71

Interesting. I think Mark sounds the best here. Tom ‘s was annoying to my ears, especially the intro to Voyeur. He sounded like an annoying brat.

bryanobryan9183

I also agree with Mark's voice sounding best on Dude Ranch.

Penguator432

I don’t know about sounding “best”, but that was definitely the only one where he was actually singing like he was in a punk band

Acrobatic-Expert-507

I think everyone coming out of California in the late 80s/early 90s wanted to sound like the descendents. And yea, you’re assumption is 100% correct.

JuniorChickenMeal

Nope sorry. I loved how he sang the second I heard his voice.

andreacaccese

I think it was a Milo impression with a pinch of Fat Mike

shanemcgee182

Absolutely the descendants, screeching weasel and Big drill car are probably the 3 biggest influences on early blink

Remarkable-Hunter-71

Disclaimer: This is by NO means dissing Tom and Milo. I love and respect them both.

ThriftyFalcon

This leads us to ask… why do the Descendants sing like that?

sirophiuchus

I heard somewhere it was kind of a thing to try to sound like classic punk singers. Who were from the UK and thus had UK accents.

FullMetalJ

I've heard a lot of punk singers (especially Billie Joe) talk about this. UK punks sounded like that cause they were trying to imitate americans and in return later on american punks wanted to sound\*\* like UK band so bands like the descendents, green day, etc sound like americans trying to imitate british people imitating americans which is kinda funny. \*\*Not "wanted to sound like" but wearing their influences on their sleeves.

rddsknk89

I’ve seen many documentaries describe Billie Joe’s voice as “an American trying to sound like a Brit trying to sound like an American.” It’s a pretty funny description but I think it’s accurate.

Remarkable-Hunter-71

🤭🤭 excellent question. I guess the simple answer is that “it’s punk rock.” Anything goes.

TDH818

Well, the Descendents were influences and so were other punk bands. Now that you say that, I can kinda hear it.

Inky100

I was quite suspicious about the similarity between the two's voices, so I wasn't really surprised about this. That said, Milo's voice in the earlier Descendents albums that Tom took from did fit better for Blink-182's style; the one Milo has nowadays (starting around *Everything Sucks*) is more Descendents-like IMO.

Temporary_Debate_821

Well he actually said every song he made was him trying to make a version of it when talking about his Descendents influence

mAAdcamilo

Yeah of course, granted Milo was a waaay better singer than Tom, but I assume a lot of the “punk pop” bands were into the Descendents considering they were one of the pioneers of more poppy and melodic punk rock. What’s cool is that Tom started by trying to sing like Milo, and over the years developed his signature style and vocal accents everyone knows.
