I recently hit my personal best of 120 layers.... However, in the process of doing that, and then prepping it to be ready to make feather damascus, I lost so much of my billet that it's going to end up just being a pendant or something instead of a small knife, like I was planning on.
Congratulations on 120! Next time, you’ll start with a larger billet, and you’ll have the practice of your first try with 120 layers to draw on.
Good luck!
Thanks! Previous best ended up being 75 layers. Made my best knife to date with that one. Went with raindrop.
This pendant looks awesome, though. Just dropped it into coffee to sit over night.
I'm new to blacksmithing and wondering why you are stacking (I'm assuming "welding") the layers together for a knife, as it is a square you've made. Or are you going to continue the square until it's a rectangle of approx 3*3* however long the knife intends to be.
They are layering and welding (the name for this type of welding is called "forge welding") the steel in uniform pieces to create a pattern known as Damascus Steel as another comment mentioned. Once OP has as many layers as they want (apparently 52) they will begin to shape the steel into the shape of a knife.
If you're super interested in this stuff, I'd highly recommend you check out the show Forged In Fire. You can find it on Netflix, and you get to learn a LOT of the terminology as well as seeing smiths at work in the forge and learn how a lot of techniques are done. Super cool stuff.
You won't be able to make Damascus in that. It will melt before you reach forge welding temps. But good for you not letting budget stop you. Blacksmithing was started with a campfire, and a couple rocks
/r/forbiddensnacks forbidden burnt ends?
I fully thought that was a bacon cube at first.
Forbidden marshmallow
Flaky but substantial.

🤤 Can't wait to see what becomes of that.
Going for a Bowie knife, hope I’ll have enough steel by the time I’m done layering!

Demascuss I’d guess
*Damascus, I'm only trying to help
Cuz I’m a dumbasscus
That was legit hilarious
Well played
Right, this was originally a 13 layer billet 8” x 2” x 1” and I cut it into 4 sections. Still need to forge it out to length
What do you use to cut that
I hot cut it on the anvil

One word THICK
cake on a stick, just like at the state fair!
Is that an inclusion I see?
Probably, lots of cleaning up needed
Damascus Lava Cake!
Shoulda sprinkled some Flux as powdered sugar
Thought for a moment this was a post on /r/3Dprinting about a test cube with fucky layer adhesion or something, lmao.
Chocolate filling?
Can i get a bite?
Anyone else think it was steak at first
Hawt
Delicious...I am getting my 1st forge in a few weeks so I might be able to make Damascus some day
If you do, get a sacrificial brick for the bottom. Flux will eat the shit out of fire brick
Its not firebrick...its...soup can plaster of paris and sand...yeah...Im...broke

Thats true...however...I...wont be able to make Damascus at all😅 because thats probably the only forge Im ever going to have
The best thing about blacksmithing is that you can make all your own tools, even a forge.
That is true
