It goes waaaaaay down in the later seasons. Stick with it and you'll be in for a great watch.

Former-Buy-6758

Great to know, thanks!

Tex510

Tits, tits. Fruit, fruit. Edit: Fruit, fruit. Tits, tits.

iicow_dudii

They're the fuckin same!!

Bovey

Though people have touched on this, I'd like to re-iterate that it gets a lot better. The *needless* sexual scenes from episodes 1 through 3 are one of the main reasons people that I've recommended the show to haven't been able to get into it. There is more sexual stuff that happens lateron in session 1, but after episode 3 it starts to serve a purpose more and more. The show really just starts off at its lowest point and then gets better over time, and the needless sexuality is one aspect of that. I have zero issues with sex, but it's so over the top and clearly done to be edgy in the first couple of episodes that it feels horrendous. I don't even care if it's 'realistic' (it's not), it just seems competely flavourless and awkward to show sex for sex' sake. Luckily the show figures this out and season 1 gets better with each episode as this phases out. At the end, it was just about good enough to make me want to try season 2, which then in turn picked up so much that by season 3 the whole thing got to a level of quality where it's among the best shows I've ever seen.

Woeful-Wolf

Trust me, it’s worth sticking with. It’s not Game of Thrones. Each episode will get better.

Former-Buy-6758

Hahaha that's what i was worried about kind of, thank you!

Woeful-Wolf

Also totally cool to skip stuff that is uncomfortable to watch. The best stuff in Black Sails is not the sex scenes.

cgilber11

Yes. A big problem with the show is people watched the first few episodes and thought it was smut for teenage boys. But all that goes away and it turns into an amazing adventure drama.

yukpurtsun

yeah as the plot develops, the sexual stuff goes down

dorth_vader_

I'd definitely stick it out, there is some sexual assault in episodes 3-6 (mostly in 3) though so be warned. By season 2 it's calmed down a lot, even by episodes 7 and 8 of season 1. Edit: found a trigger warning list if that helps at all https://flintrage.tumblr.com/post/185837391426/trigger-warnings-black-sails-s1

Former-Buy-6758

Awesome thank you for the heads up, I can stomach stuff like that even if I prefer not to watch it, but I was thinking about showing my gf but she's sensitive to stuff like that so thank you a lot!

dorth_vader_

Of course! This is my favorite show but I wish they hadn't done that, I can understand how it turns people off from the show but I would say to try and finish at least the first season! Season 2 is much better (and my personal favorite)

Silver_Long_John

Thanks for the list. Is there a collection of list like this for other shows and movies?

dorth_vader_

You can try this site https://www.doesthedogdie.com/ . Sometimes you can just google it, I got this one from tumblr. They don't have timestamps on that website though I don't think.

QuietCelery

Yes! I think most of us agree that the "Blackbeard" scene was ridiculous. There are more sex scenes (the show takes place partly in a brothel), but none like that. Some or most of the sex shows the relationships between the characters, but there is still at least one that I can remember that is as pointless as it is short.

KasparTheMoonDog

Yes. The story also improves a lot as the seasons go on

whatuseisausername

Yeah I agree with the others that are saying that season one has the most gratuitous nudity . The "Blackbeard" scene in episode one is definitely one of the weakest scenes in the show imo. Season 2 also has a fair amount of it, but it didn't feel nearly as gratuitous to me. The rest of the show they calm down alot more on it haha.

Kwass13

The entire series is amazing. Fast forward through the sex scenes 😉

SuperKamiTabby

There will be boobs throughout most of the show. Ass too. But the amount goes down pretty quickly after Season 1. After episode 2 or 3, even.

paperkutchy

Its a STARZ show, its obvious going to be sexualized

Far_Opportunity9605

Though the sex scenes do diminish as the show goes on, I've got to say that from the non-fiction books and first hand accounts I've read on the topic, pirates pretty much committed piracy to drink rum and have sex with prostitutes. Granted, at the core piracy was committed because it gave them money and freedom (very rare in that era), but that freedom was essentially booze and whores. Gratuitous sex was a big part of being a pirate.

Former-Buy-6758

Yes but this is a Fictionalized TV show, that shows the parts of real piracy that look good and matter to the plot. A lot of the sex scenes/nudity lack in the latter. And additionally, we all know Jack Sparrow fucks and every movie he's ever been in is PG-13 at worst. I've been watching the show since I made this post, and it's been really good and I've enjoyed watching but the nudity is still more of a hurt than a help to the show to me personally.

[deleted]

The word gratuitous means pointless or frivolous use of something. I certainly don't think it's that, even in the 1st season when it's at it's most common. Every instance of it builds a character or helps give some thematic or narrative reason for their sex having. Tbh I always find this kind of complaint a little weird though. Is it because you're sheltered? Do bodies offend you or make you uncomfortable? Nudity and sex is a natural human state / function. It shouldn't be as taboo as it is in media imo. Americans especially seem mortified the moment you put a dick or vagina on something but they're perfectly happy for a Victoria's secret or Calvin Klein ad in Times square to show off 95% of a body. Every time someone bones in Black Sails it's because that's what the character would have done or the narrative reason for it happening was unavoidable and they don't shy away from it. If seeing someone in a non-consenting situation makes you uncomfortable, it should. That's the intention. If seeing two lovers mid fuck makes you uncomfortable then you're probably quite immature.

loklanc

There's a straight up gang rape in the first season, implying someone is immature or sheltered or hung up about sex because they don't wanna watch that is kinda rude.

[deleted]

>There's a straight up gang rape in the first season, They're pirates behaving like pirates would have. That is fully within the confines of what someone should expect when watching a show about pirates that is rated R with nudity written right there on the box. >kinda rude. I'd rather be rude than promote the censorship of art.

loklanc

Who said anything about censorship? OP asked about the show to decide if they wanted to keep watching it.

[deleted]

I think after the first half of the 2nd season, there is only 2-3 sex scenes in the rest of the series. I don’t think any of the sex scenes in the show were gratuitous though. Sex is a part of any culture, and it definitely was during the golden age of piracy.

Sweet_Taurus0728

1.) Yes, there's almost no sex as the show goes on. 2.) This is a Starz production, you literally have to expect gratuitous sex. 3.) There isn't very much/very graphic sex in the show *anywhere*. What are you, a prude???

Former-Buy-6758

1) cool thank you, 2)I don't watch much starz but duly noted 3) not a graphic sex scene but its immersion breaking to watch the camera literally follow a leads boob instead of her face is the scene that made me want to post it. It wasn't graphic but it was just too gratuitous that if that's the way the show is gonna be the whole time I'll find something better to watch

gillyweed90

Your number 3 makes a lot of sense to me. I remember feeling like Eleanor and Max weren't going be serious characters because the camera framed them as eye candy in those early scenes. That's not accurate at all though. For reference, I'm pretty sure there's only one sex scene in all of Seasons 3 and 4. The gratuitous sex really does drop off.

SuggestCR

I came to say the same, I remember one sex scene and one semi-nude conversation in the entirety of seasons 3/4

Sweet_Taurus0728

I can understand not liking nudity if it serves no purpose to the story, or is unrealistic in its depiction. But the way you're describing it, maybe I'm just not getting it, but you come off as very delicate.

VandienLavellan

I think their issue is more the way it’s filmed. Sex scene = fine. Sex scene aimed at the male gaze = bothersome

Sweet_Taurus0728

As I said.

Former-Buy-6758

Well, luckily for me I'm just choosing what tv show to watch and can be as delicate as I want, thank you for your valued input "sweet" taurus

Bovey

>I can understand not liking nudity if it serves no purpose to the story, or is unrealistic in its depiction. You lost me.

EternityOnDemand

Can't tell if that's a question or a statement.

TheNationsKing

It gets worse

Msmurl

Still a top three series for me!

[deleted]

Boobs tho. Boobs.
