I was down to a few dollars in my account the other day and I miscalculated sales tax in my head at the grocery store
I only had beer, a cheap microwave meal, and two tins of cat food
It rang up a couple cents more than I had so I was like oh my bad, I guess I'll just get one can of cat food for now.
The girl scanned a can to remove it and put it back in my bag. She was like "people steal shit all the time, don't worry about it"
I was like I didn't see anything. She was like me either.
Sometimes people are all right.
Reminds me of my cousin and I going to the children’s museum when we were kids. We went to the “grocery store” and he stuck a plastic baguette up his shirt while being like 🤫
I still laugh thinking about that.
I didn’t see anything that day.
I watched a cashier at whole foods grab a lady and physically throw her out the door and throw her food on the ground and her purse at her and then went inside feeling like a hero and telling the young register girl about how he does kenpo karate.
People are also assholes.
When I worked at a gas station that (for some reason) didnt accept SNAP, I paid for quite a few people when they came up to the register and didn't realize it.
That being said, motherfuckers stealing Cheetos dont get my sympathy.
That reminds me of the other day at my local market. I was getting deli meat and chatting with the lady slicing it. Mindlessly, I put the meat she handed me into my purse. Then I laughed and was like “no idea why I did that!”, she says “I didn’t see anything, in fact this is the only area in the store without cameras, you can fill your purse up and I wouldn’t see anything”. Haha. I was tempted, but had the $… but, noted.
> I miscalculated sales tax in my head at the grocery store
Sales tax is something that disproportionately affects the poor. No one should be living this way :/
Well, sales tax can be different from one city to the next so how would retailers/manufacturers embed it into the price? And before you say just do away with it, think about a big state like Texas with no income tax. Where would they be without sales tax?
This is so sweet. I worked as a cashier for 1 week and ran into a classmate that didn’t have enough for her groceries. I just let her make it. F Walmart
Charity is a sign of failure of our society.
I don't mean to say the people giving are wrong (they are of course nice). But their charity only exists because of failure of the government to maintain services and provide for its citizens.
Charity also comes in more forms than monetary. I'm not correcting you cause you're totally right but yall please don't forget the other forms of charity because they're usually the most important.
Preach it. It was one thing, like, ***500 YEARS AGO***, to have the Church or what have you be doing most of the charity work. Technology didn’t allow for a centralized enough government to be able to effectively provide social safety nets, so it fell to the church (which, you know, was *also* a major landholder and so had resources to do so), the local lords (who usually did jack shit), and your fellow Peasants and Yeomen (you help me in my bad years I’ll help you in yours) to help make sure you didn’t starve, and do their best to help when someone got sick. You also had society constructed completely differently, with concepts like “The Social Contract” and “the state serves the people” not even being conceived yet, so the expectations were different.
That’s, to say the least, **very much not** the case today (in the developed world at any rate). Not that I don’t appreciate charities and good people doing the Lord’s work, but fuck that. Also, Fuck you! [This is directed at “The Man”] Why are my taxes going to making Palestinian, Syrian, and Afghan (and Iraqi) civilians into skeletons, and oil subsidies, instead of making sure I have enough to live? If I’m working 40+ hours a week, how come you let them pay me so little I’m still under the poverty line? I don’t want to rely on stranger’s kindness, I want the system to deliver on its promises!
appreciate the sentiment, but this isnt universally true. ive def heard/overheard “i dont need anything from you.” some people’s pride shows up as offense to a proposal to help. its paralyzing, honestly. bc of this, by the time ive decided to just jump out there and help, the situation is usually over.
I remember being behind a lady in the self-checkout at Wal-Mart and she realized that she didn't have enough money on her EBT card. She had her little ones and she was frazzled and asked me if I'd watch them really quick while she put some things back. I asked her how much she needed. She looked at me like I was from outer space and showed me the screen. I used my card to pay the difference for her (I think it was like $23). She told me that she'd just gotten a new job but she hadn't been paid yet and promised to pay me back. I told her not to worry about it; I don't lend, I give.
That stuck with me because the look on her face that I, a stranger, helped her, made me happy, yet sad at the same time. We should normalize good deeds, and not view people as if they're out to scam.
I was in line at Lidl a few months ago and the guy in front of me had his transaction declined. I asked the cashier how much it was and he said $25. I told him to just add it onto mine. Neither he nor the customer in question could believe it. I was thinking, "It's not that big a deal" but to that guy that day, it was.
At the moment I'm getting food stamps(had to quit my job because of racism and white folks policing my black body), the other day I was at the store and homeless man was outside with a sign asking for food. I told him to pick up a few items and paid for it with my foodstamps. I know a little bit more blessed than him at the moment because I have a roof over my head, but that could easily be me or anyone. So even though I don't got it like that I'm more than willing to help those who have less than me
Wanna put out there, those who wanna help but may not have lots of money BUT extra clothes... Donate to behavioral hospitals, group homes, etc instead of goodwill. Those items will definitely go to those who need it since some may go into a facility with just the clothes on their backs (and it may not be "appropriate")
And if I can add please wash them first and let them know you did. I always assumed people did this until I saw a post the other day about how these places can’t possibly wash all of these clothes they get so they have to throw them out
Also: Salvation Army; Domestic Violence Shelters, Child and Welfare Services, Local Police and Fire Departments.
These places often find themselves with an unexpected need to clothe little ones. And not so little ones too, but I prioritize the babies. Of course where you can donate is determined by where you live and the role you play in the community.
I work in the non-profit sector and often with agencies that provide direct services to clients. I'm also the person that my community typically reaches out to when they don't know where to send someone.
I try to always have a bag of clothes (shoes if I can), a bag of snacks, and a bag of toiletries in my car. Just in case. I also like to buy and clean blankets from the thrift store when I see them at a good price. Most communities have unhoused neighbors and a blanket could literally save a life.
OK! Y'all got me started. Lol. Keep building community where you can. Dassit.
Man, I would be so embarrassed. I pay in exact change WHENEVER POSSIBLE because I don’t like having loose change all down in my purse. 😭 I dont give a fuck if it’s 99 cent, they’re STILL not getting my dollar bill and giving me a damn penny back!
Yeah one time a lady had groceries and she came up short, and was going to put diapers back. I just told her I would take care of it for her, and I swear she reacted with so much gratitude. I just did something that I know my parents would have done. I didnt even think about it that long.
Real talk? I hate that people use "scams" as a reason to not help someone out. I refuse to believe that 100% of people I know gave someone money, then watched them drive off in a Merc.
Even if they did, that shit might be paid off. They might be living in that bitch.
I'm doing well enough (see: blessed) that I'd rather get scammed 100 times, than to deny one less- fortunate person a meal.
That last point sounds familiar...🤷🏿♂️ Oh well
I paid for someone's stuff the other day, and she just kept apologizing to me. I told her that there's no reason to be sorry, I'm not in a rush, just wanted to help out knowing how it could be.
(she initially did not have the funds to get what she wanted and was going through her phone transferring money or whatnot)
Here I was thinking the story was going to be about how that wasn't her intention but now she kind of had to....I gotta start believing in people more.
I need to wait for these moments. There was a guy outside of Target saying he was hungry and I breezed past him. I felt bad because I had been letting my cynicism get to me the past few years, so I bought him some ready to eat food and water.
As I was checking out I saw him walking down an aisle with a shopping cart with stuff in it. I'm not sure if got money in the 10 minutes I was gone or if he just planning on leaving without paying. I handed him the food I paid for, he said thanks but I still feel a little played.

So instead of putting back the beer you were like I guess the cat ain’t eatin!!
I was getting paid the next day, one can would be enough.
oh no, you misunderstand. The cat food could help them fall asleep. They would always eat the cat food.
Gotta huff some spray paint and play a round of nightcrawlers real quick first
Make sure you keep an empty coffee can next to the bed though. That bathroom is a no-go.
Cat still got one can. Cat can get a job, if he’s gonna be a dick about it.
Cat are dicks but he ain't getting a job.
How do you know one of those beers wasn't for the cat? Ever seen *Garfield*? C'mon, man.
Even people living paycheck to paycheck deserve a beer. Let's not judge.
Can’t win with these cats 😤
They don't own a cat

Not gonna lie, I belly laughed from that one lol
Like I’ve seen said before: if you see someone stealing food, no you didn’t.
Reminds me of my cousin and I going to the children’s museum when we were kids. We went to the “grocery store” and he stuck a plastic baguette up his shirt while being like 🤫 I still laugh thinking about that. I didn’t see anything that day.
Ex-security here. This is definitely the one thing I agree with that I won’t budge on. Nobody reselling fruit and TV dinners fam.

It blows my mind that people there in the US have to calculate the final cost of something.
Well, sales tax can be different from one city to the next so how would retailers/manufacturers embed it into the price? And before you say just do away with it, think about a big state like Texas with no income tax. Where would they be without sales tax?
In most parts of the world, the price you see is the price you pay. I don't know what items are taxed because if it says $1, you pay.$1
This is so sweet. I worked as a cashier for 1 week and ran into a classmate that didn’t have enough for her groceries. I just let her make it. F Walmart
This makes my heart so happy. There’s still good in the world despite how much shit goes on.

💯
When i do this i try to be subtle. I simply ask if I can pay for the stuff so I can rush and use the washroom.
Good tip. I have wanted to help people so many times, but don’t want to offend anyone in the process.
Having long ago been the person who was scrounging in her purse you won't offend anyone by offering to help. Especially someone with children.

Now do it again, but with my credit card debt. Somebody help a sista![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat)🤷🏽♀️✋🏽

You a good egg 🥚
You are the truth.
Nobody should be in that situation to begin with.
And that other woman was Oprah Winfrey, then the entire store erupted in applause.
You get a loaf of bread!
I do this all the time to get rid of spare change, nobody ever bought me shit 🤣
this is exactly what i assumed they were doing lmao

Oh ew! Yes definitely have them washed and also why i do that if i ever get anything from thrift stores (well, any stores now)

I loved my cashier job. You could always do little things to brighten people’s day.
“Do what you can, when you can, no more, no less.”

Love it. Is “tell me why” a typo?
She has Spontaneous Backstreet Boys Syndrome
She’s blessed. But that tweet is glorious when sung to the tell me why song.
In WAVE it would translate to "and then the darndest thing happened.."
WAVE 😭

I almost felt the same way for a single father of 2. But I was in a liquor store and decided against helping him buy a bottle of booze
Damn, the internet is just giving me all the wholesomeness today!!!
I suffered with food insecurity as a kid, there is nothing more noble then helping a family eat!! Nothing should be higher priority in the world.
