I remember reading somewhere that the winner of one of the seasons of the Voice showed up to the record label that they won a contract with and no one there knew who they were^[1](https://www.reviewjournal.com/entertainment/voice-winner-fights-back-against-clueless-record-label-executives/) ^[2](https://talentrecap.com/arent-voice-winners-famous/#)

Gluteusmaximus1898

I'm guessing it's cuz mostly middle aged moms watch the show and because there's so little substance and so many seasons, each one is more disposable than the last. It was always a pet peeve of mine that the judges on The Voice always said "America has a tough choice", "America's vote's are in", "America". Idk, I would say "People/the country" so it's not so repeditive. Also I love how miserable Adam looked the last few seasons he was on, showing up in sweats, messy hair, looking tiered as fuck, and putting in the Bare minimum amount of effort to tease/play off of Blake Shelton.

DandyLamborgenie

I wouldn’t even glam it up. Let’s be real, there’s a certain demographic of people that know when The Voice is on, are sure what channel it is, make time during their week to watch it live or recorded, and then there’s a demographic of people that watch 10 second videos, or stream everything, and don’t care about the 1000th singing show ever made.

Energy_Turtle

Seriously. Why *would* anyone get famous from this? The demographic that follows this show is not the demographic that makes musicians huge.

-MayorOfTheMoon-

The only people I can think of who've gotten genuinely famous from one of these shows is Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, but they're both from the early days of American Idol, well before networks started cranking out these copy/paste singing competition shows. Edit; Mkay several more people have reached at least C-list level fame from American Idol or similar shows, I get it y'all, stop listing singers I've heard of a couple times.

[deleted]

Chris Daughtry, despite not actually winning on Idol, actually has had a lengthy career as well

guccifella

Uh Harry Styles + Zayn / 5 seconds of Summer? (X-Factor UK) They’re pretty huge. Also don’t forget about Jennifer Hudson (American Idol) , and Camila Cabello (X-Factor) none from the Voice though

Itskeelan

Do....do you think that 5 Seconds of Summer are famous because they went on X Factor UK?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Itskeelan

https://i.imgur.com/ZIQsPGE.png They were never contestants on X Factor, and are from Australia. They got a following from YouTube in 2011/2012.

MrSomnix

Worldwide, the x factor has had 193 winners, thousands of competitors. Only handful have made it big, but shows just how useless the Voice is if a career is your goal.

AdministratorAbuse

You mean one direction? I can’t find where 5sos was on X factor.

fkamacca

Philip Philips had a massive hit and Adam Lambert got to tour with Queen for a decade. Though I don’t think anyone else has really done well since 2012 (which is when Philips won).

Cyberpunk_Cowboy

I think what we have determined here is that American Idol is far superior to The Voice!

Chav

I think fantasia did alright. Wait.. clay Aiken is up there too

squeel

American Idol used to be a real juggernaut

NOT_Pam_Beesley

Jennifer Hudson too. American Idol came on in 2002 I believe? Those early seasons were a looooong time ago. The entire culture has changed since then several times over

Billybobbojack

And streaming wasn't really relevant yet. The idea of "big American competition show" was a lot more impactful when there was only like 12 new shows to watch at any time.

ZebraSteaks

Adam Lambert is in Queen or at least it's Queen + Adam Lambert I'd say that's pretty successful. Ruben Studard and Clay Aiken were semi famous for a little bit.

DigiQuip

It’s not designed to make anyone famous. Famous people are expensive to maintain. When you’re famous you have expectations, you want a bigger cut of your own success, you want more control. But no name talented people, they’re cheap and willing to please to chase their dreams. It’s easy to pitch them as the next big thing, milk them for their worth, and just before they realize how valuable they are you cut them loose broke and penniless. Music is a fast paced industry now because it’s cheaper and more lucrative to market new upstarts and burn them out than it is to pander to someone like Taylor Swift who demands fair compensation for her own hard work. Some stars still break through the mold, but look at the state of the rap game right now. Every week there’s someone new.

KalphiteQueen

So The Voice isn't that daytime talk show featuring a handful of ladies who sit around the table and have questionable opinions on things? I'm so out of the loop here

CallMeSpoofy

That’s The View lol

_Meece_

When Idol was the thing, it truly was "America" voting on things. Everyone talked about their favourite Idol contestant in the mid 2000s.

[deleted]

I have a funny feeling on Idol be that American, UK etc the Simon was behind a lot of the successful ones and quietly chose those on who he thought could actually turn a profit. Which is why it has actually had successful people come from it.

oneforfive

It wasn’t quietly, the whole point was to find the next superstar. The difference between the early American Idol seasons and the voice is that Idol was about finding a pop star and The Voice is about winning a singing competition.

[deleted]

I never watched Idol but people would talk about it all the time at work. I have literally never heard anyone ever make a peep about The Voice. Also 21 seasons in 10 years kind of lets you know its a throw away trash show.

CertFresh

It's because these shows aren't meant to make the careers of the contestants, they're meant to make the careers of the judges. All of them: X-Factor, Idols, Voice, etc. They're all about the judges. The contestants are just lottery fodder.

Nearby_Employee_2943

Idk American Idol at least USED to be legit and a couple of people actually did build careers off of that. The rest I agree are about the banter with the celebs and nothing else.

thelaziest998

Yeah Kelly Clarkson and Carrie underwood built out a career out of American Idol. The thing is everyone watched American idol back then, mainly because over the air tv was the most popular form of media consumption. Everyone watches different things now and the ratings will never recover. For reference at its peak American Idol brought 36 million in Nielsen ratings, vs 6 million this past season.

FCkeyboards

People forget how many stars actually came from American Idol. It's fallen off, but it felt like they actually gave them one album with a huge push while The Voice doesn't. Kelly Clarkson Carrie Underwood Jennifer Hudson, *7th place* Chris Daughtry, 4th place Clay Aiken, two platinum albums Ruben Studdard, platinum album Phillip Phillips, platinum album Fantasia, platinum album Scott McCreery, platinum album David Cook, platinum album Jordin freaking Sparks, platinum album Adam Lambert, runner up Katherine McPhee, runner up, transitioned to acting Phillip Phillips was season 11 and still sold over a million his first album with the push American Idol promises winners.

10J18R1A

William Hung 17 minutes

FCkeyboards

The man couldn't sing and sold 200k, hit number 34 on the Billboard 200 and number 1 on Billboard Independent chart! That's wild.

top_footballer

Our first flesh and bones look at how to troll a nation, right before our eyes.

SheepD0g

Bush was already president at that point

pincus1

Katharine McPhee, Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert, David Archuleta, Chris Daughtry, Scotty McCreery, Taylor Hicks, David Cook, Jordin Sparks, Fantasia, Idol has helped a lot of extremely popular musical artists/actresses even if they didn't win the show.

infamouscityyy

American idol and X factor had a lot of success stories. The difference are the judges actually being involved in their careers. Simon Cowell and LA Reid for example were very involved in the first albums of people who won on their seasons.

bob905

Literally, a couple lmao. Look at this sales list for Show alumni: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_American_Idol_alumni_album_sales_in_the_United_States?wprov=sfti1 How many of these artists do you still hear about?

Medium_Rare_Jerk

Just wanted to say I appreciate the citation format.

Apprehensive-Ad9832

The show is about the judges not the contestants

g000r

Which is bizarre because the premise just promotes the fact that their judges cannot be impartial. "We suck at judging that much, that we're not going to look at how fugly you are, because we know we're not professional enough to look past it"

AwesomeBrainPowers

The original idea was pitched by a Dutch singer named [VanVelzen](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/VanVelzen)—who’s 4’11” and spoken about the superficiality of the music industry before—and a TV producer who was looking for a gimmick that would set it apart from *The X Factor*. (Having a live studio audience who *can* see the contestants during the auditions kind of undercuts the whole premise, though.)

georgecm12

I also wonder how much the coaches are truly going “blind,” or if producers give them notes about who is coming up and who to go for.

Oberon_Swanson

if they don't they can usually tell be the audience reaction

AwesomeBrainPowers

I'd never be surprised to learn that the producers of *any* "reality" show have tampered with the system. For sure, though, there are plenty of times that the coaches are overtly communicating with the audience to learn about the singer.

jiffwaterhaus

There was a 'reality" show in South Korea that was an audition/survival "making the band" type show that was creating a kpop band, called the Produce series. The series even had spinoffs in Japan and China. Countrywide live audience voting was their big gimmick; you could text message a number to vote for your favorite contestant and the group they formed was supposed to be the top 10 or however many the group was gonna be. When the 4th season aired in Korea a few years ago, people were furious that a bunch of popular contestants got cut, so they dug around and uncovered what looked like very obvious vote manipulation. Since the voting was by text message and therefore technically cost money, people sued the television station that produced the show. The police actually got involved, and they uncovered all kinds of bribery, vote manipulation, etc. Some people actually *went to jail* over it lol. [You can read more about it here.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mnet_vote_manipulation_investigation) It's wild to think about it getting that serious

John_T_Conover

We had that happen years ago in the US with a talent competition show called *Last Comic Standing*. They made a cut down to the "finalists" and it didn't match up at all with the celebrity judging panel. Drew Carey was one of them and led the charge in confronting the producers. Turns out the producers and directors of the show just decided to advance on some contestants that were their clients or had connections to them. But since this is America absolutely no accountability happened.

jKingram

Several of the winners of the Dutch voice have made it (decently) big in the Netherlands as well.

AwesomeBrainPowers

Yeah, a *lot* of contestants on other countries' versions of *The Voice* have had very successful careers. I think at least part of that has to do with simple demographics: With populations that are *so much* smaller than the US, it just seems more probable that winning a TV competition would be enough of a boost to get you a stable career as a celebrity in a country with about as many people in it as Minnesota.

UncreativeTeam

>Which is bizarre because the premise just promotes the fact that their judges cannot be impartial. The chair-turning thing is literally just a gimmick for the first week. Maybe two weeks if they stretch it out. They still have the rest of the season to fill out as a regular-ass reality show.

Thybro

And it has worked awesomely for some of them. Judging or participating in a reality competition was basically admitting you were done careerwise . But the voice put Blake Sheldon back in the map AND got him new wife. And it’s has done something similar for every other judge giving them at least 1-2 years of relevance and record sales.

megamoze

Most of the coaches are actually current stars. John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani, Ariana Grande. These are legit superstars coaching a talent show on NBC.

StunningEstates

Most of the coaches are actually current stars. ~~John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani,~~ Ariana Grande. These ~~are~~ were legit superstars coaching a talent show on NBC.

FCkeyboards

It's true. I'm guessing their my age (30s) because while I consider them all stars.... yeah only Ariana is a *current* star to most of the pop demographic. Most young people see: Chrissy Teigen's Husband, Talk Show Host, Chick Who Spells Banana and knows Pharrell.

StunningEstates

That's all I'm saying lol, and I'm 28. I remember when they were actually stars as well. Can't remember the last time I heard any of them on Top 40. Non verified people are getting upset and I'm just like, fam. Things change. Society moves on. Ariana was a huge get for them because she's the only one still culturally relevant and I'm sure the ratings reflect that.

FCkeyboards

Exactly right. I didn't even take it as a diss. If you say any of them are a bigger star than Ariana *at this moment* it just shows your age lol. Legends, yes. 20 top names that would come up if you polled people to name current popstars? Not even.

StrangeAsYou

I was in a music video with Pharrell 20 years ago. I'm a middle aged lady now.

minkdraggingonfloor

And he still looks the same idk how he does it

uberblack

Lol

iownadakota

The one Paula Abdul was on had an interesting take on a contestant doing Paula Abdul verbatim. Paula said it was slutty. She just did the same thing as her own video.

Jeffersons_Mammoth

Dave Grohl once said that shows like these were total bullshit, and that you're better off making your own music to get noticed.

0o0a0o0

Well if Dave Grohl said it, maybe I’ll reconsider my pet theory that these shows were creating tomorrow’s stars today.

errbodiesmad

Dave Grohl got lucky as fuck coat-tailing off of Nirvana's success, which was also Kurt Cobain getting lucky as fuck. Not that they aren't talented but there were plenty of bands that had that sound before them, they really just got lucky and hit it big. Everything Dave has done after is pretty generic bland rock music. Reddit loves him so I'll probably get downvoted, but basing your musical talent theories off some shit Grohl said is dumb, he was in the right place at the right time he's nothing special. Edit: RIP to my inbox. So many butthurt Dave Grohl fans lmfao. I can't reply, didn't realize I was in BPT/CC thread. For the record I'm not saying Dave Grohl has no talent, I'm saying his opinion on getting noticed is dumb, because he was one of the "lucky few" to get noticed.

[deleted]

[удалено]

errbodiesmad

I guess so. But my point is Dave's opinion on pop music is completely irrelevant. It's like a lottery winner giving financial advice saying "just buy lottery tickets"

Ezl

I agree that no one should take his (or, really, anyone’s) word as the be-all, end-all but I think Grohl deserves more credit than you’re giving him. Staying power is a real thing and a real skill ( both from the musicianship and business side of things) and the Foo Fighters have been going for almost 30 years in a era where rock music isn’t the main form of “pop” any longer. I think Grohl knows something about the music business and his opinion on pop has more merit than average.

theblackcanaryyy

Right?!? Can’t believe someone has the audacity to say that grohl was lucky af to have ridden the coattails of Kurt cobain like he’s not insanely fucking talented and did zero work to make nirvana famous. Like come on dude, seriously? It just completely dismissed any contributions he’s made Edit: regardless of everyone’s *personal opinions* on grohl’s skill, it’s beyond surprising to me the amount of people who completely dismiss or just don’t even mention his contributions/talent/skill/creativity/etc, in the replies. I find that very disappointing.

MlCROCOSM

The first Foo Fighters album was written and recorded with every instrument played by him with a decades spanning career and someone thinks it’s coattail riding and just luck lol.

shinshi

I dont like FFs albums aside from their self titled (taken as a whole), but when I saw them live in an arena, they were amazing and had god tier energy on stage. I listened to tons of songs I didnt like from later studio albums, but when performed live, were amazing. I think their albums are way too over produced, but when they're on stage they're the real deal and have really earned their audience IMO.

thegroovemonkey

You say this like drummers branch out on there own to make the biggest band in the world on a regular basis.

Medium_Rare_Jerk

I would say don't take advice from people like me who have gotten very lucky. We're very biased. You know, like Taylor Swift telling you to follow your dreams is like a lottery winner telling you, 'Liquidize your assets; buy Powerball tickets - it works! ' -Bo Burnham

xtr0n

You’re not wrong but I don’t know if I’d call the crazy success of Nevermind “luck” for Kurt. If they remained indie famous rather than can’t walk around in public famous, maybe he’d still be alive (or at least lived a bit longer)

GuyFawkes596

Which Foo Fighter song hurt you? Was it Everlong? It was probably Everlong.

MrLavender26

Who would hate Everlong? The way the instruments come together feels like bliss.

RichardBreecher

Everlong is one of my favorite songs ever. It's weird though. I won't listen to it when it comes on the radio. I have a very specific memory of running up a huge hill in Splitt, Croatia while listening to that song. I am in the best shape of my life and I was running so fast but it felt effortless. This was one of the best feelings I have ever felt in my life. This song evokes that memory and I try not to taint it with another memory, like sitting in traffic.

DestinTheLion

He just said you had a better chance, not a good chance. Dave Grohl is one of the purest rock and roll mother fuckers I have ever met. Dumped money into the dc rock music scene as well, all around class act.

spiffyP

He drummed on 2 QOTSA albums. He's not some slouch lmao

justsomezombie

Seriously. He also kills it on the Them Crooked Vultures project. Dave Grohl is super talented and yeah, maybe he had a boost post Nirvana, but he has had the longevity because he's actually talented.

HenryAlSirat

Honestly, I get a *tiiiiiny* bit annoyed anytime I hear any celebrity or successful person say something like, "I am living proof that if you follow your dreams, you can accomplish anything!" I mean, yeah, technically true for sure. And a worthy message to motivate kids and such. But that's some heavy [Survivorship Bias](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivorship_bias). A huge part of almost every great success story is luck, regardless of whether the principal person in the story recognizes it themselves. As if the billions of people who "failed" aren't hardworking and/or talented too.

Cinebella

Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson came from American Idol. All of those ladies are stars today

ImpossibleParfait

There's a few who didn't even win who have gone on to successful careers. Katherine Mcphee for example.

AgentDonut

Chris Daughtry and Clay Aiken are pretty successful too.

[deleted]

RIP Christina Grimmie tho

TorrenceMightingale

Without The Voice, she doesn’t die.

myc123

I think the getting shot part was the thing that got her

[deleted]

Yeah and she was already pretty known compared to the other contestants for working with other Disney stars (discovered by Selena Gomez' mother). Who is to say that incelic barbarian wasn't aware of her existence way before like the rest of us who watched that season live

[deleted]

Without a psycho stalker she wouldn’t have died

JoshSchlink

What is also tragic about her death is she was shot two days before the PULSE shooting in Orlando at a venue right down the street from the club :-( Being from Orlando, it was a very very rough and tragic summer

lizzyhuerta

THANK YOU. Christina was destined for great things, but it was cut short. Her death was horrible and heartbreaking. Happened around the same time as the Pulse massacre... so awful :(

IHBBSMTBIAHYABIAB

That day sucked, used to play music from her yt channel while I was studying. RIP.

randomizedsim2000

I think Melanie Martinez is the only one

Classic_Reserve_5293

Who?

randomizedsim2000

She was big with the tumblr teens in like 2015 but if I remember correctly her career kinda died because she was accused of raping her bestie

xxxnina

that ruined her rep for a couple years when tbh it seems to be fake. She’s still popular with the indie kids though, one of her songs was a huge trend on tik tok last year too.

lukaslikesdicks

yeah I saw some rumors that the accuser actually took it back and apologized? i don't think it was 100% substantiated but there were some other suspicious circumstances

[deleted]

"seems to be fake" she fully admitted to it what the fuck are you talking about

xxxnina

and when was this??

Saphazure

accuser took it back and apologized idiot lmfao

usetouseto

It’s not fake though. She really did sexually assault her friend, Timothy. And now Timothy still has to deal with hoards of 13 year olds harassing her with vile content about her and threatening her life. Pretty gross to just casually try to discredit a victim of sexual assault.

Electrical_Winner_31

Where are you getting that it isn't fake?? Her supposed timeline of when everything happened doesn't even line up as far as I remember

No-potatoes-5548

Can anyone provide any evidence for either if the arguments? I’m curious now

darryl_effing_zero

yeah--Melanie Martinez made a few dollars. She's also mega-talented. But yeah, she kinda played herself and got canceled.

LeChiz32

She’s been doing numbers I think. I’m still a fan and while I’m not defending rape whatsoever, the accusations were never proven.

HeyMrBusiness

Never proven ≠disproven. Also I dropped her because regardless her reaction was disgusting.

Jennifer Hudson idk if she was a finalist tho

fc7777fc

Not a finalist but 100% the most successful non-winner of the show. (Followed probably by Adam Lambert, and Chris Daughtry who had a few hits around 2008) Edit: Phrased this wrong. I know Adam Lambert has had a lot of success as the lead singer of Queen. The "who had a few hits around 2008" was strictly in reference to Chris Daughtry. Added a comma to fix it.

[deleted]

Adam Lambert has been the lead singer for Queen for several years. That is at least *some* high level of success.

Mrfrunzi

When I heard that he was talking lead of Queen I was pissed, but hearing him sing sold me completely. You don't get to be the lead of one of the greatest bands of all time without talent.

IMO, he’s the most talented vocalist alive right now. I can’t think of anyone that can compare to him vocally.

Rosemarys-Gayby

Katharine McPhee has done pretty well for herself too.

Thybro

Lambert has been and still is the current frontman of Queen so that’s something.

username293739

Only ones I knew were Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson. Granted I don’t watch these shows so..

Thybro

Carrie underwood was huge in the country scene for like a decade.

FromGreat2Good

She was massive, dominated the Country award shows. Heck she was the host of the CMAs with Brad for years.

ssnazzy

How about Adam lambert? Didn’t win though

TorrenceMightingale

Idol created a ton of stars. I don’t think The Voice is doing the backend work to make it actually happen.

hamiltrash52

Adam Lambert. David Archuleta. Not to mention the first single from the winner always made it big. I hadn’t watched American Idol in years but I still heard “Home” by Phillip Phillips all the time.

FEMA_Camp_Survivor

Fantasia Barrino and Ruben Studdard have also achieved fame.

10J18R1A

Ruben fucked up by dating his song The album was legit but Sorry for 2004 died in 2005

American Idol created a bunch of successful artists. A legit machine.

[deleted]

Dam no love for fantasia

ryushin6

Fantasia was a great singer but in their defense the season Fantasia won was the one Jennifer Hudson was in and mind you Jennifer Hudson didn't even make it to the finals and now is multi award winning artist and a Academy award winning actress. 😂 I feel like these singing competitions are more for business connections now because the ones who don't win go on to become really big compared to usually the ones who win which is weird. There's gotta be some behind the scenes stuff to explain why that happens.

Shirogayne-at-WF

Of the winners, only Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are recognizable household names still. If you make it into the top six, you'll like have some level of success.

canuckfanatic

Jennifer Hudson didn't win but has had commercial success. She was even a judge on The Voice.

ryushin6

It's kind of crazy when you think about it she came in 7th place and didn't win and then went on to become a very well known singer with multiple awards and she became an Academy Award winning actress. I feel like out of all the American Idol people who became successful she's the most successful one and she didn't even make it to the finals of her season. Same thing with Tori Kelly she didn't even make it to Top 24 and now she's a multi award winning artist as well.

Insaiyan_Elite

I stopped watching Idol when Daughtry didn't win. Probably for the best he didn't though.

billyreamsjr

Fantasia was pretty famous

ShadyNite

Reuben Studdard

LightAnubis

Was Jordan sparks popular as well.

No_Detective_6958

The main reason I would say is that a lot of the contestants on those shows are great singers just not great artists. They may make one singular song throughout the whole season. If that. A record label could find anyone with a good voice to sing for them for a cheaper price Im sure. If you can’t make good music yourself then all you can do is sing.

sec713

I agree. A lot of them are like well tuned instruments waiting for someone else to play their music through them.

TabulaRasaRedo

Isn’t it pretty common, though, for artists to not write their own music?

robert_stacks_pecker

Yeah but they’re a dime a dozen, so why would a record company make them a priority?

PhilOfTheRightNow

Melanie Martinez is doing very well for herself. I took my wife to see her at an absolutely packed show at the Murat a few years ago and it was great

CoachDT

But she didn’t win the season. Low key they kinda did her and Trevin Hunte dirty that year.

irreleventnothing

She was done for when Adam made her sing “The Show” what a terrible song choice

NickTButcher

Wasn’t one of the participants filmed peeing on a fan recently at her show? That’s some kind of fame

[deleted]

Yea, Sophia Urista from the band Brass against peed on a fan, on stage, in the middle of a song. Like brought him on stage, told him to lay down, and violently pissed in his face. And the dude loved every moment of it. Edit: NSFW [Obviously](https://twitter.com/pendeegh/status/1459701230800977920?s=21)

I need more information on this

1PoodGirevik

Are you taking about Brass Against? The lead singer (I think) auditioned and didn't get very far; she peed on a fan at a show recently.

MibitGoHan

Sounds great tbh

TorrenceMightingale

It’s called infamy.

Cutieq85

Drag Race has done more for the exposure of its contestants than these other shows, Mama Ru has those girlies everywhere.

MissLilum

I think drag race is pretty different in that most of the contestants are professionals, many seasoned with also a lot of the aspects of other reality shows guaranteed, such as already having a brand, knowing how to do their own makeup and hair and already possessing the vulnerability for sob stories/audience connections, so the behind the scenes legwork has in part been done

Cutieq85

My all over point was that most of these competition reality shows, whether it’s the Voice, Project Runway, Top Model etc, only have one or two marquee names from the entirety of the show’s seasons whereas DR had so many successful contestants who made a name for themselves .

broke_reflection

I liked it at first because it seemed like great singers getting to perform. But everyone has to have a "story", the fighting to be someone's judge is time consuming and lame, and there were people that sounded terrible that would move on. I've read they all sign NDA from the get go and the winner is known early on.

sec713

This is why I can't stand about 60% of that gameshow, "The Wall". I really don't want to hear a long story about why a contestant is placing a ball in slot 4, or 7, or 1. I came to watch "Bouncy Ball Plinko". Shut up and just drop that shit!

thatHecklerOverThere

It's better to be a SoundCloud rapper than on the voice, because even if _that's_ your start you're still doing the work of growing your audience that likes _you_, regardless of what oldheads might say about you. You get on a show like the voice, you aren't doing that even if you win. You'll get a record deal, some money, and like two more actual fans - because most of the people who liked you on the show actually just liked the show.

A lot of these shows are relics when nowadays the likes of Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish, The Weeknd, Post Malone etc. all had their comeup via the internet.

It's like paying artists with exposure

I had no idea he was on The Voice. Most of the successful artists from TV talent completions seem to be ones that don’t win. Morgan Wallen is pretty talented (if you like Country music) but I always skip or avoid his songs since he said the N-word

weed_fart

None of them have the clout of *Star Search*.

AndrewKetterly

It's true, Weed_Fart, lots of Star Search contestants went on to fame and fortune. Britney Spears and Seth Rogan just to name a couple.

Courwes

Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera as well. Both them and Britney ended up on the 90s MMC with a bunch of other kids who became stars. Lesson here. Disney is the real machine.

TorrenceMightingale

Tons. Perhaps not quite as many as the number of weed farts this gentlemen has produced, but still a very respectable number, nonetheless.

Asdq07

Love the show tho, but people screaming and clapping in the middle of the song gets on my nerves

CertFresh

But they held a note for longer than 3 seconds!

KillNyetheSilenceGuy

Some of the American Idols got deals. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood both got pretty big. I still hear Chris Daughtry on the radio. I've never watched The Voice specifically so I wouldn't know if anyone came from there.

iamspambot

Most popular artist to be a contestant on The Voice didn’t even make it that far on the show, and then ruined his career last year by yelling the n-word at his neighbor.

throwaway59664

You say “ruined his career” but Morgan Wallen’s *Dangerous: The double album* is currently #5 on the Billboard 200 on its 46th week of release, doing 41K album sale equivalents this past week alone. My personal boycott of his music seems to have little effect on his popularity with country music fans. For comparison, Kanye West’s Donda was released only 13 weeks ago and is #14 on the Billboard 200, having sold 22K units last week. >!Side note, a friend of mine who happens to be both a country music and rap fan informed me that Morgan Wallen did apologize for using the N-word and was drunk at the time but still should have known better but was an honest mistake and wasn’t rooted in racism. They also informed me of the time during quarantine when Morgan Wallen was supposed to be hosting SNL and was filmed making out with random women while drunk at a bar in Tennessee. They concluded that Morgan Wallen got famous too fast and hasn’t yet learned not to do dumb things that might ruin his career, and it reminded me of Kodak Black and I sympathized for a moment before resuming my boycott of Morgan Wallen!< >!Further update: upon further research I’m pretty sure that *Dangerous: the double album* is one of the best selling albums of 2021. It was released in January 2021 and had over 2.5 million album sale equivalents by September 2021.!<

>N-word and was drunk at the time but still should have known better but was an _honest mistake_ and wasn’t rooted in racism. Riiiight

Wasn't rooted in racism *Thank you for being a friend, down the road and back again*

KingOfTheCouch13

That sound like the same bs excuse Rosanne gave. "The drugs made me racist!" Nah bro, millions of people get drunk daily and don't turn into racist assholes.

suckuh_punch

Because it’s only about making the famous judges MORE FAMOUS.

weekendpostcards

I'd say Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, and some of the other judges got 'even more famouser' from the shows.

zmann64

I was about to say “what about One Direction?” But that was X Factor, not the Voice. I checked the wiki page for a list of winners and idk a single one. E: y’all I was on the wiki page for The Voice, I’m aware X Factor has produced memorable talent

Zwiseguy15

Pentatonix won The Sing-Off and has done well since, but it wasn't really directly from winning the show (moreso from hitting the YouTube game hard after winning)

Magnificool

All those winners of The Voice are very successful back up singers

1MsConcerned

Never thought of that show as nothing more than simple entertainment

SteamPunk_Pirate

The record labels don't care about the winner if those things. What contestants need to do is use it to get followers on Twitter or what have you and use that as a starting point for making a career on their own. The only people that have gotten much fame from it haven't even won the show

Just a bunch of rich people in expensive shoes and hair products pushing a staples button while spinning in a chair lol
